Recently I got a parking ticket for parking on single yellow line . I didn't want to challenge it and decided to pay. However, when I went online to pay and then tried to enter the PCN number along with my car's registration number, it refused the details as invalid. When I checked the PCN, I noticed the parking attendant had mistyped my car's registration so technically the PCN has not been issued to my car.

What do you guys suggest I do?

Thanks in advance

Just don't pay then. How are they going to track you down if they have wrong Registration?

Run to the nearest newsagent and buy some lottery tickets.

On a serious note, if the car reg is wrong, then technically and legally it doesn't apply to you.

There's probably a help number online if you think you deserve the ticket and you feel it's your legal duty to pay it. Just call them and no doubt they'll sort it out for you. Or just do as S28 has has suggested and ignore it. Seems like the least hassle and puts the onus on them to track you down.

I would get in contact with them and pay the fine manually, as the warden around our way take photos when they write out the tickets, they may eventually go back to photo to cross reference the reg number and come and get you.

.....or you can ignore it hoping the parking wardens has gone back to his break away Provence in Central Africa to claim his father's throne and continue royal legacy.

Thanks all for the replies. I was parked on single yellow line at 8:30 p.m and normaly most places 6:30 or 7:00 p.m is the latest time that you can't park. There wasn't even a sign that mentioned one can't park there. However, after this I went to the council's website and only on their website they mention that single yellow lines are operational from 8 a.m till 9 p.m. This i believe is not my fault, still I wanted to pay but upon realising their mistakes, I would prefer not to pay.

Legally speaking, if they issued the ticket to a wrong car then how can they ask me to pay?

Why contact them? If they have the means they can track AFG_Brit down, he can always say he tried to pay but the online system wouldn't let him. They can hardly punish him further as the error is on their side. If he has to pay eventually fine, this way at least he doesn't have to go to any trouble on their behalf.

Xmas has come early
for you ...the only problem could be if the attendent has taken a picture ...check that 1st...otherwise you are one lucky gun...I recently paid £65.

Wow that is a BIG fine. The biggest parking fine in Toronto is around $200 and that is when you directly impede a fire hydrant. Other than that most fines are $30-50.

Typical fine in London can be £120 with reduction to £60 if you pay up quickly. UK State is bloated with excess staff and outsourced private contractors so lots of calls on taxpayers. The 1% need to start paying their fair share. Don't let Council jobsworths adding no real economic value bully you.

On separate issue my wife git a ticket from private car park in Southall. We just never bothered paying despite months of letters threatening court action. They gave up after a year.

I would have thought that the photograph was just a backup to support the parking ticket being issued in case anyone challenges the decision of the parking attendant to issue it. However, in your case, the parking attendant never issued you/your car/ your registration number with a parking ticket - it was issued to a completely different car with a different registration number.

Had your car been using false number plates at the time (ie the ones on the parking ticket), then perhaps you could be done for some other violation - but the warden's own photos would show that not to be the case.

Just in case they try to come after you, I'm sure you've a pretty good case to challenge any fine.

dude since the traffic police made a mistake your ticket is void now!
download this app "winit" they might help you out and i was able to fight a parking ticket.

Is it possible that someone else had got the ticket and then put it on your car while he left, hoping that you would pay it without checking?

Thanks, I will wait and see if I get any letters by post ( I should not but still).

They got one letter wrong, but still it changes the whole number plate. I didn't even realise the mistake until i went online to pay.

Call them and pay up. The Council bloke will probably have taken a pic so it is better to get ahead of this and pay at the discounted rate before they hunt you down and the legal machine starts gaining momentum.

A sickener, but it happens to all of us so take your medicine and learn for the future. And you will have the satisfaction of having done the right thing.

Do you reckon the council will be within their rights to demand full payment rather than the discounted early payment fee? I would have thought they should be willing to allow the discounted fee from the date the correct paperwork was sent out. I don't see why he should have to jump through hoops on account of their error.

What if the wrong number belongs to some other person? He might be caused some trouble for no reason although the photograph would come to his rescue too.

The other person would have a case in that
1. He/his car were never at the location & time shown on the ticket.
2. The photograph proves point 1.

The only way you will get a letter by post is if the number plate against which the ticket was issued is completely invalid (ie that number plate doesn't exist on the DVLA computer system), and then a human operator examined the photo, compared it against what was issued, ignored the number plate on the issued ticket and went after you using the number plate from the photo.

Like I said earlier, you will have a very good case if you challenged all that.

However, if it is a genuine number plate (belonging to another car) - see my previous post #21 above

I doubt if the council bloke can simply look at a photo and re-issue a ticket to a completely different car/number plate to that it was originally issued to. And all that to a caller on the phone. At the very least there will be some sort of convoluted procedure involved, otherwise there is too much scope for manipulating the system.

even thought, if the traffic warden took a picture of your car reg. This is different from what on your ticket. You have a case there

Normally you have 28 days to pay, who will they send the reminder too, if the car reg is incorrect
