Heroes at home, zeros away from home - How long will the trend continue?

Since many years now we are seeing a trend that all teams are competent at home, some being almost invincible, while they turn into rabbits caught in front of headlights when they tour foreign countries which have different conditions.

It is almost like you know the results before hand. India will be thrashed in SA, Pakistan will be beaten black and blue in Australia, England will be whitewashed in UAE and Australia will struggle in India. The story goes on and on.

How long will this continue? What needs to be done to make teams more competent overseas?

Well not always the case. SA and Aus always win in each others backyard. Eng actually won in Aus in 2010-11 which except for SA no team has achieved in 25 YEARS.

India never gets beaten black and blue in SA. In 2006 and 2010 (drawn series), we won 1 match each and in 2013, we came close to winning the first match and lost the second. Also, in AUS, we did draw 2 matches and again came close to winning in Adelaide.

Its in England that we tend to swing from one extreme to the other. Won in Lords only to lose the next 3 matches!

I don't think crowd comes for most test matches also most revenue is from TV Channels so it won't be big issue. Or Let ICC decide how pitch will be made.

Yes thats true for UAE, west indies etc but in England, Australia and even India ,the fans come to watch test matches in significant numbers.

Overseas doesn't include subcontinent. By overseas he means aus, eng, nz and south africa.

Players need time to prepare in alien conditions.. Earlier greats used to play county cricket and get acclimatised to overseas conditions however now players play IPL in off season and the cricket calendar is full with ridiculous bilaterals.. No one talks about it but Pakistan went to England 1 month ago to practise and play university matches and get used to conditions.. India were playing SRi Lanka at home a week before SA series they went in without 0 practise in SA conditions..

You don’t win away series like this.. Honestly Kohli needs to get a season or two of competitive county cricket theoretically the amount of hard work he does one or two season of county cricket and he will definitely become one of the best ever..

As long we have UAE as our home we can't improve enough to play good cricket overseas , how about changing it to England or NewZealand , heck even PSL can be played there that will surely improve our domestic players and also they might get county contract.

There should be a change in this trend, pitch conditions decision should be in the hands of the visiting team, since the home team is used to playing in all conditions, they will be ready for any kind of pitch. The away side can atleast have a better chance of competing this way.

This ritual slaughter of touring teams is getting ridiculously predictable. I've three solutions:

1) For the new Test League starting next year, introduce neutral curators who are contracted to the ICC to minimise home advantage. Yes stay true to the characteristics of the venue - but for example if in Australia and a team like England or New Zealand are touring - have a typically hard, pacy Oz track but leave some live grass on the surface so their swing bowlers aren't completely negated.

If an Asian team or West Indies are touring England or New Zealand - the pitches could be a little drier to assist the tourists' spin strength. Home advantage will still be there due to overhead conditions, but at least the tourists will have a chance.

2) Scrap the toss. If its a three Test series - award the choice of batting/bowling first to the tourists in 2 out of 3 matches. If its a two Test series - award one toss to the home side and one to the visitors.

3) Ensure two mandatory warm-up matches for the visitors against good quality opposition before the start of a series in these new Leagues.

Main issue is lack of preparation. Teams from yesterday used to arrive month early, and competed against local teams in 2-3 games before the start of the series.

With the introduction of T20, focus has shifted on maximizing profit margin and that month which could be used in preparation is being shelved.
