RAHIM YAR KHAN: Obtaining water from a mosque tap landed a farm workers family from the Hindu community in trouble as some village landlords allegedly tortured and held them hostage for “violating the sanctity” of the place.

The incident took place a few days back when Alam Ram Bheel, a resident of Basti Kahoor Khan in the city suburbs, was picking raw cotton (phutti) along with his other family members, including his wife, in a field of Chak 106-P. Ram said when the family went outside a nearby mosque to fetch drinking water from a tap, some local landlords and their men beat them. When the family was returning home after unloading the picked cotton, the landlords held them hostage at their dera (outhouse) and tortured them again.

Later, some Muslim residents of Basti Kahoor Khan got the Bheel family released.

Ram Bheel said the Airport police station did not register the case as the attackers were related to a local PTI parliamentarian.

Ram said he held a sit-in outside the police station, along with another clan member Peter Jhon Bheel to protest the highhandedness.

Also a member of the district peace committee, Peter Jhon Bheel told Dawn that they approached PTI MNA Javed Warriach who helped them lodge the FIR under sections 506, 154, 379, 148 and 149 of the Pakistan Penal Code on Friday last.

Jhon said he requested other members of the district peace committee to call an emergency meeting over the issue but they did not take him seriously.

PTI’s south Punjab minority wing secretary general Yodhister Chohan told Dawn the incident was in his knowledge but due to the influence of a ruling party MP he preferred to stay away.

District Police Officer Asad Sarfraz said that he was looking into the matter.

Deputy Commissioner Dr Khuram Shehzad said he would meet Hindu minority elders on Monday (today) before taking any action.

He said after the Bhong temple issue, the district administration had received some complaints from the minority community which proved fake when investigated.

Answering a question about the 'inactive' peace committee, the DC claimed it was “fully functional”.

Confirming the happening, Farooq Rind, a senior lawyer and former district bar president, said he also belonged to Basti Kahoor where the Bheels had been living for more than a century. He said most the clan members were farm workers and extremely poor.

Rind said the accused landlords were notorious for picking up fights with other villagers over petty issues. He promised free legal aid for the complainant family.

Sounds more like a rouge local landlord wadeera issue.

Also, just great to see how Major didn’t bold 2 lines where Muslims residents helped the victim minority family in getting released. But then doing so and highlighting the rest has potential to turn it into some kind of religious issues. So why not?

Disgusting incident.

To add our media doesn't know the definition of torture. You will have a shopkeeper being slapped about and the media will have headlines saying two men tortured the shopkeeper. I've noticed it generally too, in the west what we call assault or GBH back home the media word it as torture. Purely pointless contribution to this thread but just thought I'd add.

Pakistan and their treatment of minorities. A shining example for the rest of the world.

The treatment of minorities is sad but what is even more concerning is lines like this

PTI’s south Punjab minority wing secretary general Yodhister Chohan told Dawn the incident was in his knowledge but due to the influence of a ruling party MP he preferred to stay away.

If ministers nd their hangers on are above the law then a country will never progress.

Another day, another attack on our minorities. Just a few weeks back, an eight year old Hindu boy was beaten then accused of blasphemy after he urinated in a mosque after being beaten up by the mosque’s mullah!

It all started after the boy drank water from the mosque’s tap.

The mullah did not stop there, he led a mob and vandalised the local Hindu temple. The mullah was never arrested but the eight year old boy became the world’s youngest person to be arrested and charged with blasphemy!

The truth is that the whole country is being held hostage by the right wing who are in the majority in the country. Nobody dares to challenge them!

What's with non muslims getting harrassed for drinking from the tap of muslims in Pakistan. Remember Asia bibi's case had a similar background as well. Apart from the religious bit, looks to almost have casteist undertones to it. It's something you would read in the news in India of upper caste hindus harassing Dalits in some random village but I thought muslims did away with casteism.

Yes that's the theory, but in reality Pakistanis still have the same ideas about caste as Indians, especially in the villages where all the yokels live. All the Islam stuff is just lip service for many of them. These zamindars think they are above the law, and unfortunately that often seems to be the case.

We can never get rid of extremism in this country. This is a place where killers such as Mumtaz Qadri, Ghazi Khalid, Mullah Burkha and Ghazi Tanvir are celebrated. Unfortunately, extremism has seeped into every segment of the society in my opinion.

If true, and as we know there are many fake stories on this area, this is just wrong and i hope the book is thrown at these illiterate idiots. I would see it as honour if anyone from any background wanted water from local Mosque and i would fight anyone that opposed this humanitarian act.

and you forget about liars that make up statistics and run away when confronted with facts. You made up stats on attacks on increasing attacks in PK and then when i gave you the facts you ran away.

You try too hard sometimes.

Your posts remind me of Mamoon 's essays but atleast he has some valid points, unlike your attention-craving nonsense.

I never said it was fake.

However, your posts are usually filled with the same negative and exaggerated views about Pakistan.

Nobody is defending these Mullahs here and yet, you claim that they represent the majority of the country, which is wrong.

Most Pakistanis will not advocate for the hanging of a 8 years old kid, who allegedly urinated in a mosque. In fact, apart from the usual TLP supporters, I don't think anyone would even think about punishing a boy for this.

Mods, can we have a poll so we can verify Waleed's claim here. I'm not concerned about the overall verdict because it will obviously be one sided but would be interesting to know how many and who wants the 8 year old kid punished.

The mute majority is as bad as this small group of illiterates. A Hindu or Christian person in Pakistan can never dream of becoming a president or a prime minister unlike India or the USA. Overconfidence sounds good in cricket ground but not in politics. One of his ministers wearing Levi's T-shirt and giving a lecture on poverty to the USA. What happens in other countries it is not our business. Imran Kahn should talk less and act more.

From what I have seen on PP, I am pretty sure most PPers will vote against the punishment.

He is a 8 years old kid, there is no way he intentionally did that.

As I said, only the extremist Mullahs and their supporters can be dumb enough to ask for such a severe punishment.

Yes in rural area's the minorities are suffering very badly. Now someone will call me an Indian or point out how all is well with them in major cities. It is very prevalent in the Rahim Yaar Khan and Bahawalpur area. What is worse is people like Zaid Hamid and the Mullah brigade support it by reminding us Islam was formed in the name of Islam.

It's a sorry state when an obviously patriotic Pakistani and a devout Muslim would be referred to as an 'Indian' for showing some introspection about their own country. The fact that you didn't do the 'b-b-b-but India are bad too!' damage control will probably make the dogmatists seethe even more.

What is the bold supposed to mean? Even M A Jinnah is accused of being this or that by his own people then whose me!? Thing is speaking the truth hurts many people, they would rather point the finger at others whilst ignoring our own problems. This report itself is evidence how non Muslims are treated in Pak, don't give me this of it being only one incident. The Holy Prophet(saw) told us that if you do only one good deed than speak the truth. In Pak doing this makes you an Indian!

Ah, sorry, the bold was just saying that any criticism of Pakistan is immediately met with a 'India do bad things too' by the crazy nationalists. I fully agree with most of what you're saying, aside from the appeal to religion (but agree to disagree there). It is such a shame that things have become so polarised.

Let India do what it wants. As for religion if it does not treat human rights or unity within a religious community then it is a waste of time at least whilst we are living.
