Hindus continue to have the lowest level of educational attainment among all the major religions of the world despite having made strides in the sector, a Pew study said on Wednesday.

“Hindus have made substantial educational gains in recent decades. Hindu adults (ages 25 and older) in the youngest generation analysed in the study, for example, have an average of 3.4 more years of schooling than those in the oldest generation,” Pew said.

However, Hindus still have the lowest level of educational attainment of any major religious group in this study, which is topped by Jews.

Globally, the average is 5.6 years of schooling, and 41% of Hindus have no formal education of any kind. One in ten have post-secondary degrees, the report said.

At the same time, despite large gains by Hindu women across generations, Hindus still have the largest educational gender gap of any religious group, said the report titled ‘Religion and Education Around the World Large’ released by Pew Research Center.

In its report, running into 160 pages, Pew said Jews are more highly educated than any other major religious group around the world, while Muslims and Hindus tend to have the fewest years of formal schooling.

Drawing on census and survey data from 151 countries, the study also finds large gender gaps in educational attainment within some major world religions.

“For example, Muslim women around the globe have an average of 4.9 years of schooling, compared with 6.4 years among Muslim men. And formal education is especially low among Hindu women, who have 4.2 years of schooling on average, compared with 6.9 years among Hindu men,” the report said.

“On average, Hindu men have 2.7 more years of schooling than Hindu women, and just over half of Hindu women (53%) have no formal schooling, compared with 29% of Hindu men,” the report said, adding that even in the youngest generation of adults in the study, Hindu women are considerably more likely than Hindu men to have received no formal education (38% vs 20%).

The vast majority of the world’s Hindus live in India (94%) or in the bordering countries of Nepal (2.3%) and Bangladesh (1.2%).

“In these three countries, Hindus tend to have low levels of education; in India, Hindus average 5.5 years of schooling, while in Nepal and Bangladesh they average 3.9 and 4.6 years, respectively,” Pew said.

“However, in countries outside the Asia-Pacific region, where Hindus are a small religious minority, they are much more highly educated – and often are the most highly educated religious group in a particular country,” the report noted.

For instance, Hindus in the US have 15.7 years of schooling, on average – a full year more than the next most highly educated US religious group (Jews), and nearly three years more than the average American adult (12.9 years).

Hindus in Europe also are highly educated, averaging 13.9 years of schooling, Pew said.

whats the point of an article like this? the academic interest is weak at best and the potential for it to be misused to malign people of this faith is all that it will be used for.

Yet again, the illiterate bumpkins in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar ruining the stats.

Pointless association of lack of education to a religious group.

Ok smart guy. How about acknowledging that most people leave schools as its a choice between education or putting food on the table?

Pointless relevance

What next?

People who wear chappals are less educated than dress shoe wearers?

If anyone bothered to read the article in detail: Hindus and Muslims are at par.
With almost all Hindus being in a developing country like India, it is bound to happen.

But education v/s religion comparison should be either in the same region and be compared with education v/s income level.

They needn't bother about the hardships of putting food on the table if they have anything fewer than 5 daughters and 8 sons. 199 million people in UP and 99 million in tiny Bihar, and it's their own fault.

Though UP and Bihar might be contributing a lot of illiterate folk, the point is the lack of literacy among Hindu Dalits/Tribals and other ultra backward castes who do menial jobs.

The priority of kids from Dalit/Tribal/ Backward castes is to bring money home rather than getting educated. Most of these kids come from huge families where the number of kids per family may be over 5. Who is going to stop them from having kids? No one. Its up on them to stop breeding and getting their Sons/Daughters educated.

The thing that I observed is that even though some Upper caste people also have big families, they at least force their kids to finish 10th standard.

UP and Bihar are dumps. Other states like Orissa and Madhya Pradesh are not far behind.

All countries have states that are poorer than others, they are still part of the nation and the nation ultimately has to take responsibility for them.

Every country has poor areas and states. But Bihar and UP have unimaginable number of people.

You cannot bring up people from poverty when the number of poor people in each state are in excess of 70 million. These people have no idea about family planning too.

Also to add, UP has more people than Pakistan. And Pakistan the country is considered over populated.

This. Bihar and UP are part of India. Nationalism is not limited to standing up for the anthem.

Least educated and still has a very good reputation around the world. OM NAMA SHIVAYAAAAAaaaa.... athanda idhaanda Arunachellam.......never mind.

I Dont know what's the big deal about analysis on Religious basis. We have Literacy rates, Poverty rates of Hindus and other minorities regularly analyzed in India. % of Working women among Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs. Age of marriage of Hindu, Muslim and Sikh women. % of Muslims in Police force in various Indian States and Number of Muslim MP's in the Parliament.

In these data, one could often find that Muslims are most illiterate and backward community in India and more needs to be done for their upliftment.

On world standards, Hindus have same standards. What's the big deal?

Time isnt far when scientists/teachers will refer to the population of UP to explain how molecules look like in solids.

Why do I always see you comment without any logic often ?. It is the faults of the state and central government for the way UP and Bihar are. You need to bring development to the areas, people are not going to develop without any given chance. Same reason why India couldn't progress without letting the big corporates invest in their country. You need good schools and universities to dismantle cultural habits, even if farming isn't doing well, people will continue to have 7-8 kids until vast majority of the population learns that having too many children when farming isn't viable is a bad idea. Another example of cultural habit is many Indians blaming UP and Biharis tendentiously as if they are preventing India from becoming another Luxembourg. Essays and critical thinking taught at schools are supposed to help you think broad and not be a close minded person. You can't comment based on your primal instinct. I blame the sub continent education system.

There are only 2 hind majority countries in the world, India and Nepal and they both are really poor, Indians on here are trying hard to make it look like only a few states are the reason why India is so poor when in reality most of India isn't any different.

This is not news. Considering that most Hindu's are Indian's where some 50% live in abject poverty and slums this is to be expected.

Ok smart guy. How about acknowledging that most people leave schools as its a choice between education or putting food on the table?

We where all poor at some point ?
Am sorry I dont buy that argument . This was true for the whole country 50 years back , things changed for some states and some not for a reason .

I know in our own villages , 20 years back we had people working in fields and barely having money just to feed their kids , if you visit now none of those kids work in the fields , most of them are some kind of diploma/degree holders who earn a decent living . May be its time to acknowledge that the problem is within .

Don't know why they are not considering adults aged between 18 and 25, These kind of news sells well and they are exploring new ways of marketing.

Tbf to Hindus, they're the most educated in the USA.
Because by and large its primarily the educated ones who moved to the States (and Europe to some extent) - and that in turn is/was due to them generally coming from wealthier, and thus more educated backgrounds than the average Indian - otherwise they wouldn't have been able to obtain a U.S. visa never mind the means to get there.

Its the equivalent of comparing the school children from a school in a wealthy neighbourhood of a prosperous city with those from a school in a poor rural village and then claiming that the school children in the wealthy neighbourhood are better educated and higher achievers.
