Any hip hop fans here? And I don't mean people who listen to garbage like Lil Uzi, Future, 21 Savage etc. I mean real hip hop. It is probably my favourite genre along with classic rock.

It's too hard to pick my favourite rappers in order so I'll list my top 5 albums instead

1) Reasonable Doubt (Jay-Z)
2) The Eminem Show/MMLP (Eminem)
3) Life After Death (The Notorious B.I.G.)
4) Illmatic (Nas)
5) All Eyez on Me (2pac) and Good Kid M.A.A.D. City (Kendrick Lamar)

What are yours?

I know shaz619 Saqs JaDed and Madplayer listen to rap. Anyone else?

Biggie was the real OG. Severely underrated these days.

Despite being a huge rock and metal fan, I like rap sometimes. Kid Cudi is one of my favourites.

Biggie is the most skillful rapper of all time. The most complete as well. He's the only rapper without a single bad line let alone a bad song. He released 2 albums before his death and both of them are like greatest hits albums. That is truly amazing. People like shaz say that 2pac was a better rapper but that is not true at all. Most people prefer Ready to Die and I wanted to include that on my list but I prefer Life After Death.

I know people make their own CD's and stream music from their phones but I bought that album for my first gadi recently :afridi it's amazing, quiet a few gems that I had forgotten about on there as well.

I could make a case for a number of rappers at positions 3-5 but the top two without a doubt for me are Pac and Biggie, we've debated this to death :)) but yeah that will never change and Pac is the goat for me because of how his music resonated in a way no one else could really move me across a variety of topics whether I was happy, down or needed inspiration; the commentary on social issues and his intelligence in general when it came to the political spectrum in America and history in addition made him quiet the package; quiet frankly, no one has ever been able to inspire the masses like him and his legend lives on; Pac was the Muhammad Ali of Hip Hop.

2) Biggie

3) I always change this but in this moment will select the NWA

You are right. It is debatable however they both have to be in one's top 5. You might as well replace NWA with Ice Cube at 3 because he was NWA. Ice Cube really doesn't get enough credit for what he's done for rap.

aliasad1998 You wont find many fans of old school hip hop these days given the era they've grown up with and I know you're not a fan of grime scene in the UK but it's the closest thing to Old School Hip Hop and I like the dark/gritty nature; there's not as much of an emphasis on delivery and rhythm but the flow tends to be decent while the narrative is more important then anything else:

In our previous debate I had him at no.3 so won't argue with that but I love Easy E :)) and the others deserve credit to for playing their part even though Ice Cube was the real captain of that ship

Hell ill listen to paint dry over Migos and their ad libs. Hip Hop is dying. People say that it is evolving but no. It is dying. As for these so called "rappers" like Lil Uzi, Kodak Black, 21 Savage, Future etc, these guys are the epitome of garbage hip hop. The quality of hip hop is at an all time low so we need to realize that the likes of Kendrick (who doesn't even belong in this trashy age of hip hop), J Cole, Joey Badass, Big Sean etc are saviours in a genre that is becoming worse by the day. The audience are the main culprits here. I mean just look at people who think Lil Uzi is lit. People these days like listening to this trash so trash is what we are going to get. If someone like 21 savage were to release his music in the 90s when you had the likes of biggie, nas and 2pac and people recognized good hip hop, he would get destroyed. So yeah, I'll give your UK rap a shot.

Biggie would've overtaken 2pac if he didn't die so young but he's still the greatest for me. Pac was good, maybe even the GOAT, but his songs are more like sermons, don't have the same beat, the same rhythm, the same rhyme as Biggie.

Drake is running the game right now.

Really missing Cole right now. I hope he doesn't leave the game.

Drake, Cole, Logic are probably my top 3 right now

Btw, Shaz, listen to track # 14 on N.W.As album Niggaz4Life. I can't name it here for obvious reasons. I have listened to almost everything there is to listen to in hip hop but I have never heard a song as messed up and audacious as this. Especially the 2nd verse. Tell me what you think. It's all MC Ren. Very bold

The only issue is that because you're not from the inner city in London or Brum you may not be able to relate as much to what they are saying but someone like Akala is more of a global talent when it come to his topics of discussion but he doesn't make music as much now is more of an activist. Man I don't even know who those guys are, I just cringe whenever I bump into their songs, there was one track with like billions of views and it went something like drop that tu duh duh started something something N word drop that tu du du don't know what else was said but I was shocked people enjoy such trash. People insult old school hip hop as well without even giving it a chance, one guy was telling me I'd be able to listen to that if I was high they think it's too x-rated etc plus the other issue is that people are just not smart! and their attention spans are very small, a good beat is the most fundamental thing for them

Drake isn't really a rapper but he is still better than a lot of todays trash. Don't really care for him. Logic is a brilliant technician and credit to him for making meaningful songs. I think he is a bit monotonous though. Cole has his flaws but he is still a very good artist. Cole and Logic are both very good by todays awful hip hop standards. Kendrick is where it is at though and like I said before, he doesn't even belong in this era.

Its like Eminem said. "It is not about lyrics anymore. It's about a good beat and a catchy hook". I'm glad I dont have low standards like people who listen to this crap. I'm thankful for the taste in music that I have.

Drake is dreadful, he got a good gimmick that's about it; only track I sought of liked of his was Find your loving that's it

I like Drake but he raps about problems hes never even known. I mean, a guy who grew up in a posh Canadian neighborhood with a white mom is rapping about getting by and surviving in the hood? Hilarious. Good thing he's moved on to songs like Hotline Being.

I used to hate a lot on drake. I still think hes mediocre as hell and I will never listen to his music but trust me. Living here in Canada, I've realized that there is much worse out there.

What has the colour of his mothers skin got to do with his upbringing :)) not all white people live in castles

But him being from a posh neighbourhood is certainly more in line with the point you want to convey and he's a pretender no doubt; his woes are limited to Chris Brown hanging out with Rihanna nothing else

I do agree with that to be honest, he is like the god of rap compared to some of the trash I've heard if you want to compare him to the current crop

Well, not a lot, white people have financial troubles too but "living in the hood" is more associated to person of African descent.

Yeah that's true but there are fair amount of working class white women or men who have relationship or married to the black guy/gyal in the inner city; so there are many instances where you have someone like a Gervonta Davis, see my thread about him.

From what I have heard, Tupac used to have meaningful lyrics; But all this "Trap" music and Fetty Wap garbage these days is full of meaningless words about drugs, sex and violence.

You heard right. However it is not only about subject matter. Biggie is possibly the GOAT rapper and 99 percent of his raps were about violence and sex however his flow, rhymes and lyricism were amazing. That's what matters and 90 percent of current rappers lack that

aliasad1998 They always went all out and literally never cared at all lmao

aliasad1998 :))) And Lesson 2, man they did take it too far with some of the verses not gona lie lol

Drake is still running the rap game. He is able to adjust flows and he can spit bars on a beat and then make a love song. Super talented.

Logic is super slept on but I feel like not many people can relate to him with most of songs being about how he is mixed and how hard it is growing up mixed.

Drake has a good voice and production. If Drake really is running the rap game then it just proves my point about how awful this era of hip hop is. Barely any skill

I have offlate been giving it a lot of thought about rap/hip hop music could be leading to violence and desensitization of the same.
Feel at a lot of times women too become a target and unnecessary bashing.

J cole and Kendrick Lamar imo are the singers I'm really into right now, never liked Drake don't know think he is talented but overrated(imo) and almost a sellout.

How has nobody mentioned the legendary Big L on this thread so far? He's arguably the greatest of all time and nothing comes closer to his 7 Minute Freestyle.

That's in my top 5 freestyles of all time. Possibly has my favourite line in all of rap (which I can't mention here but you know what it is). Even besides that, Big L was an amazing rapper and the punchline king. Gone too soon just like so many others

Yes I know what you're talking about. I have every single line of that freestyle memorized by heart.

Yup same. I could rap it right now and I haven't heard it in over 6 months. I personally prefer the 2nd part of the freestyle which usually gets overlooked

There are so many but Bad and Boujee is one

The new Kendrick Lamar album is fire though. Only good rapper going around these days that doesn't get his material from ghost writers ( yeah thats drake). Can't be bothered listening to other stuff, too many one hit wonders and club tracks.

You are right . "DAMN." is a classic. Not as good as his first 2 but still amazing. Kendrick is far ahead of any rapper of this generation. There's no comparison. His competitors are j cole and Big Sean who are good rappers but not at his level. Kendrick is a saviour in this terrible age of hip hop. He is also the only person who has come close to outrapping Eminem on a song.

Come on Eminem's gotta be no 1.Probably the most influential music artist of 21st century.Rap God if there ever was one.

Out of curiosity - what's your #1?

And No Dr dre? The guy is responsible for making careers of so many rap artists.Legend for me.

Huge rap/hip hop fan here. Got into it when I was 13. Obviously was attached to the reigning KingsEminem and 50 Cent (at his peak period then) at the time. But in the past 4-5 years, i've discovered the origins of the art and many of the late 80's early 90's artists, which has changed my views.
aliasad1998 - You need to make a clear distinction about whether you mean Hip-Hop or (Gangsta) Rap, which is a subset of Hip-Hop.

I find most of the artists quoted here are Rappers, whereas Hip-Hop has some great non-gangsta-rap artists like RUN DMC, MC Hammer, LL Cool J .

Also people rarely consider internationally popular Hip-Hop subsets like Reggeaton (Daddy Yankee), Jamaican Rap/Hip-Hop - (Sean Paul) and most Importantly female rappers like Missy Elliot (one of the GOAT hip-hop artists in any list) , Eve, Queen Latifah etc .

The present scene finds Hip/Hop too diluted and everybody is just doing "feats" in somebody else's album.

Though this opinion may be controversial, I find the most influential rapper today to be Kanye West. The dude is music producer first and a rapper only second, but he has evolved Hip-Hop in many ways to make it stay relevant in this era. His songs involve very complex compositions and not the old beats + rhymes model of earlier rap works which no longer seem to work now. He uses sounds, instruments etc way smarter than most rappers today.

I'll update my favorite lists of artists and songs in another thread,

Yeah, Robert , Junaids, James and Markhor as well

My favourite is Soweto Kinch. He is a jazz saxophonist and rapper from Birmingham. He did a concept album called "The Legend of Mike Smith" about a young rapper trying to get signed to a label while the music industry collapses. He uses the Seven Deadly Sins as a metaphor for the challenges Mike faces. The poetry is dazzling.

Illmatic is easily the greatest rap album of all time and Nas is the most complete rapper of all time. /thread

Black and Yellow. God, was that song terrible..

I don't know why people hate on popular hip-hop music. I love the conscious stuff from Kendrick, Cole, Killer Mike et al as well as classics from legends like Jay, Nas, Big, Pac, Andre 3000 but I also appreciate the newer sounds from guys like Future, Migos, Uzi, Yachty (to an extent), DRAM. I hate when people are pretentious when it comes to music.

XO Tour Life by Uzi is fire.

Kendrick Lamar and J Cole are the best right now.

You should like 4 Your Eyez Only by J Cole. Underrated album.

It's not about being pretentious neither because it's not good, for me personally it's about desensitizing violence and promoting gang violence /ill treatment of women/objectification.

An example would be Trey Songz who was catchy initially but has become not only absolute trash but started objectification.

I respect artists like Kendrick and Cole who are genuine and write great lyrics, hated when Cole collaborated with Trey Songz.

There are similar issues in Bollywood music as well not denying but people calling it freedom of speech and exposing this to children teenagers has genuinely got me hating on gangster rap and party crap.

There is enough evidence in multiple youth gangs and about how artists play a role in the whole gangster becoming cool. Ofcourse it's not the only reason.

Didn't mean to rant,it's just something of personal observation that has me worried about this kind of music nowadays.

That's a good question, there are so many in this era alone. Drop that Kitty Down low ft $ sign or "Or Nah" but I do listen to these at times :mv

I'll make a short profile of my Favourite Rappers/Rap artists : (not in any particular order) Starting with :

1) Dr.Dre aka - Andre Romelle Young

The most influential rap artist/rap producer of all time. Was involved in the foundation of Gangsta Rap with NWA, then went on to assist many of the ATG rappers like TUPAC, Snoop etc, released solo albums like "The Chronic", "2001" all certified GREAT rap albums. He has been a prolific producer for a huge number of HipHop and Rap Artists , right from his years in the NWA.

Took a huge risk by launching unknown an WHITE rapper from Detroit called EmineM, against popular wisdom, whose best works all were produced by Dre Himself. He also launched 50 cent. And then went on to launch Beats - By Dr.Dre .Now he is THE RICHEST artist in Hip Hop.

Artistically, he is not the greatest of rappers, he only started rapping after he left NWA, there are unconfirmed stories that many of his greatest songs were ghost written by other artists (eg . Still D.R.E. was written by JayZ).

Dre's biggest skill was as a music producer, his thumping and catchy beats gave an incredible new dimension to rap , which initially was all about the kyrics alone. His specific style of beats and music came to be known as G-FUNK, which is evident in his best solo hits (Nuthin' but a 'G' Thang, "**** wit Dre Day, Still D.R.E etc ). Again the huge popularity of Eminem's early albums (Slim shady era) can be associated to Dre's beats in equal measure, so are 50 cents greatest songs.

Dre's music played a huge part in getting gangsta rap a level of mainstream acceptance (at clubs & parties and for dancing) due to the catchy nature of his beats.

I'm one of those old men now that never left the 90's, yes Biggie, Tupac, Dre, Eminem etc are all great and commercially successful but i still enjoy listening to real hiphop from the best decade ever;

Guru, Mobb Deep, Cypress Hill, Ice Cube, Wu-tang, Redman, Busta Rhymes, Nas, Eric Sermon, EPMD, DoggPound, Tribe Called Quest, DelaSoul, Souls of Mischief, Fugess, Arrested Development, The Pharcyde...

Illmatic is easily the greatest rap album of all time and Nas is the most complete rapper of all time. /thread

Lmao. Nas is easily in my top 5 of all time but I love how his hardcore fans overrate him. It's always nas or nothing for them. Take away Illmatic and what does he have? Yes he's still a brilliant rapper even without Illmatic and if someone wanted to become a rapper I would tell them to study Nas' flow before anyone else but he has made a lot of rubbish music as well and only has 2 real classic albums.

@sandbyB I'm a huge fan of the old Kanye. His first 3 albums are classics for me and I consider him a brilliant artist. Probably in my top 10 rappers. But I hate his new stuff especially his last 2 albums. He is becoming exactly what is wrong with hip hop nowadays. Good beats and no actual rap with any substance. Hope his next album isn't like this crap

Rap started out as protest form against racism, elitism, governments etc.

Public Enemy is the ultimate original rap group, nothing comes close.

Tupac was the greatest rapper of all time. Yes Biggie was brilliant lyricaly and rapped beautifuly but Tupac covered so many subjects and has written many lyrics which won't even be released.

I also like jazz-hip hop crossovers such as as Robert Glasper. The fluidity and complexity of jazz combined with the lyricism of hip hop.

Pretty solid list.

I don't usually go for AEOM for Pac, I think MATW or M7DT is his best work and are more solid albums. AEOM seems to me to be a collection of some amazing tracks put together, with no real flow of an album.

Illmatic has to be the greatest thing I've ever heard. MMLP is better than the Eminem Show, but only just.

Ready to Die is better than LAD for me.

I'd put Doggystyle by Snoop, Wu-Tang Forever and Dre's Chronic 2001 up there also as some of the most iconic albums ever to be released.

You got a problem I got a problem solver and his name is revolver.
