In his latest article for FirstPost Cricket, Saj writes about how greed brought an ill-timed downfall for Pakistan opener Khalid Latif.

A grateful nation looked up with pride at the young heroes from Pakistan as they lifted the ICC Under-19 World Cup trophy in Dhaka on 5 March, 2004. There was a great deal of expectation that these youngsters would blossom into some of the world’s top cricketers in the future. The captain of this team was the aggressive young opener from Karachi, Khalid Latif who also had the honour of being the highest scorer for Pakistan in that tournament, scoring 291 runs.

It took another four years before a much-improved Latif followed his Under-19 exploits with ODI and T20I debuts for Pakistan against Zimbabwe. While he was unable to establish himself in the Pakistani batting lineup and his appearances for Pakistan in the ODI format dried up, he remained on the selectors' radar with sporadic international appearances in the T20I format and also joined the Pakistan Super League side Islamabad United in 2016.

The shorter and more glamourous format of the PSL provided Latif a good platform to showcase his batting skills and he was subsequently picked for Pakistan’s tour of England in 2016 to play in the only T20I at Manchester.

On that tour, a Pakistan side which had earlier been thrashed 4-1 in the ODIs seemed to find its feet and two fantastic heroes as their openers in the shape of Sharjeel Khan and Khalid Latif in the T20I game at Old Trafford. What Pakistan fans saw that day from Khalid Latif seemed to point to a future of great promise and it appeared that the batsman’s long wait on the sidelines was now a thing of the past.

On 7 September, 2016, an enthralled and packed Old Trafford was turned into a sea of green as Pakistan supporters danced with joy watching Latif announce his re-introduction to international cricket with an accomplished innings of 59 runs off 42 balls. No one could begrudge Latif’s unbridled joy at playing his part in an incredible opening stand with Sharjeel Khan. For followers of Pakistan cricket, this seemed to be a watershed moment for a team that had of-late, struggled to hold its own in the limited-over formats of the game.

Now firmly established as a T20 specialist, Latif saw himself selected for the ‘home’ series against the West Indies and played an instrumental role in Pakistan’s convincing 3-0 victory over the visitors in the UAE. The news, as far as Latif was concerned, was getting better and better. With Sharjeel at his side, there was talk of one of the most effective opening combinations in T20 cricket in the world at that time.

For Pakistan fans who had waited for years with patience watching many teams produce aggressors at the top of the batting order, this was a time to rejoice as it was clear that in Latif, they finally had a hard-hitting batsman of their own and a batsman who was a great foil for Sharjeel.

To the neutral observer, the shameful events of 2010 where Pakistan’s top cricketers were found to be embroiled in a spot-fixing scandal and punished with five-year bans, would have been reason enough for any cricketer to have avoided corruption at all costs or to even dream of being involved in corruption. To those who had seen the impact on Pakistani cricket and the mental anguish associated with corruption, it was inconceivable that a second scandal involving cricketers from the same country would ever come to light again.

However, on 9 February, 2017, while playing for Islamabad United, Sharjeel lost his wicket for just one run to his name. Within hours of this event, claims of corruption against him came to light where it was alleged that he had acted in conjunction with Latif in an act of spot-fixing in the match against Peshawar Zalmi.

The PCB to its credit, acted with urgency and withdrew both cricketers and suspended them from all forms of cricket and instituted an Anti-Corruption Tribunal to look into these very serious allegations that threatened to reverse progress made by the PCB against this menace over he past years.

It took more than seven months of bureaucratic and legal wrangling before the Anti-Corruption Tribunal arrived at its verdict, finding Latif guilty on all six charges of corruption and imposing sanctions of a five-year ban from all forms of cricket as well as a fine worth PKR 1 million (Rs 6.2 lakh) against the disgraced cricketer.

To many, the stories of the Pakistan cricketers involved in the 2010 scandal would have served as enough caution to any others wanting to take the same path but sadly this was not to be.

Latif had it all in his hands. He had performed consistently in domestic cricket, waited patiently for years to make a name and establish himself in the Pakistan team, but just as it seemed that there was light at the end of the tunnel for his career, he walked into the darkness of corruption.

If rumours are to be believed, Khalid will launch an appeal against this verdict and the sanctions but even in the unlikely event that he succeeds, his international career is all but over. The sad fact of the matter is that instead of remembering Khalid Latif as an honest cricketer who triumphed in the end with hard work and commitment, history will simply recall him as a consistent performer who waited for his chance, then got it and threw it away due to greed.

Him and Sharjeel were forming a destructive pair.

Very apt title, threw it away.

One of the best players of spin. Shane watson didnt even know how to play and this guy played it with a beauty

lol sometimes you really wonder what these idiots are thinking when they do stuff like this.

No education doesnt work, even the illiterate know right from wrong.

There is simply no passion or love for the country, the same virus that infects the administration of this corrupt country is infecting its players. Such a shame.

Like I've said before, if a player from champions trophy team indulges in corruption then I won't be supporting this team anymore.

I think this issue is much deeper than it seems to be. No one has come clean and no one knows what was the alleged involvement of Nasir Jamshed. I think PCB doesn't want to dig deeper since they'll have to deal with a bigger mess.

Has his ban been completed? What ever happened to him?

Pakistan right-handed opener, Khalid Latif, has sent a written apology letter to Pakistan Cricket Board, accepting his role in spot-fixing during the second edition of the Pakistan Super League. He has requested the PCB to allow him to return to competitive cricket.

Khalid Latif, who was representing Islamabad United, was found guilty of spot-fixing during PSL 2 and faced a lengthy ban from cricket for breaching its anti-corruption code.

According to the sources, Khalid whose ban ended last year in February has now written an apology letter to the cricket board to allow him to start his rehabilitation as he has already served his 5-year ban.

It is also reported that the right-hander is likely to be involved in the rehabilitation process under certain conditions next week while his return to competitive cricket will be possible only in October-November this year.

The cricket board’s anti-corruption unit will oversee the cricketer’s rehabilitation, which will include charity work and lectures to children.

However, Sharjeel Khan has already made his way back to the competitive cricketer after completing his ban and rehabilitation process.

Sharjeel Khan represented Karachi Kings in the PSL 7, however, he had a poor outing. He made 231 runs in 10 innings including 2 half-centuries while his franchise only managed to win 2 out of 10 matches.

Khalif Latif has played 13 T20 internationals for Pakistan and has scored 237 runs at an average of 21.5 including one half-century.

I remember Khalid lead Pakistan to U19 title in 2004. He seemed promising. But, failed to succeed at international level.

Our biggest issue in Cricket is "second chances". Players will continue to spot-fix, as they know that they will always make a come back to Cricket if they get caught.

Need to be strict if we need to eradicate corruption in Cricket - Need to start handing out life bans + jail times.

His high bat swing and sixes against spinners were good to watch but he has himself to blame for fading away. Now that he has accepted his involvement in spot fixing, are people going to still defend Sharjeel not being involved in that mess?

Him and sherjeel were making and good opening pair but both just threw it away. I hope I don't see them in Pakistani colors again.

I still remember watching him live in the one off t20 vs England, had high hopes for both him and Sharjeel in the t20 format but both seemed to have thrown it away.

Just one stupid mistake and his career over!

That Old Trafford T20 was amazing. Sharjeel and Latif blasted about 40 runs before they even took a single :))

Eventually they come clean after denial after denial.

Same old story.

I think rehabilitation only starts once you accept your crime. So if you want to have any sort of playing career so you have no options but to accept it.

I hope so. I guess he'll try to get involved with coaching oversees now like Butt. Cause he's not coming back as a player at 37.

He has himself to blame should have played alot more games for Pakistan alongside sharjeel

Pakistan Ex-cricketer Named In Dutch MP Threats Case

The Netherlands said Monday that it was prosecuting a "famous" Pakistani for allegedly inciting the murder of a lawmaker, with anti-Islam MP Geert Wilders saying the suspect is former international cricketer Khalid Latif.

The Dutch public prosecution service said a 37-year-old man had offered 21,000 euros ($23,000) in 2018 for the killing of a Dutch MP through a video on the internet, without identifying the suspect or the target.

"In this particular case, the suspect is identifiable. He is a famous person in his own country. As a result, the Dutch police recognised him from the images," prosecutors said in a statement.

Wilders, who cancelled a competition for cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed in 2018 after demonstrations and death threats, tweeted that the suspect was former Pakistan opening batsman Latif.

"The Dutch public prosecutor will prosecute and subpoena cricket player Khalid Latif from Pakistan who put a price on my head to kill me in 2018. They will ask for his arrest and extradition as well," Wilders tweeted.

He paid "tribute" to prosecutors and asked them to prosecute other people whom he accused of making threats.

A spokesperson for the Dutch prosecution service, when asked to confirm that Latif was the suspect, responded that "we never give names".

Latif himself said he was unaware of the charges.

"I have no knowledge of this. I will only comment once I get any communication on this," he told AFP.

Dutch prosecutors have now submitted a request to Pakistan that it serve the summons on the suspect, but said this would be "very complicated" as the two countries have no legal treaty.

Latif has been summoned to attend a court near Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport on August 29 on charges of attempting to incite murder, sedition and threats.

Dutch media reported that prosecutors had also asked to question Latif in 2019.

The Pakistani embassy in The Hague had no immediate comment.

Latif, 37, was banned from cricket for five years in 2017 for spot-fixing in a Pakistan Super League match in Dubai.

He was banned on charges of orchestrating a deal for his fellow opener Sharjeel Khan to play dot balls ((when a ball is bowled and the batsman fails to score off it) in return for money in a Pakistan Super League match in Dubai in 201

Latif completed his ban last year and has since been living a low-profile life in Karachi, coaching at club level.

He played the last of his 13 Twenty20 internationals in September 2016. He also played five One Day Internationals (ODIs) for Pakistan.

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) -Prosecutors on Wednesday told judges they were seeking a 12-year sentence for a former Pakistani cricketer who is being tried in absentia for urging people to murder Dutch far-right leader Geert Wilders in 2018.

The 37-year-old suspect, identified in court as ex-cricketer Khalid Latif who lives in Pakistan, is charged with incitement to murder, incitement to criminal acts and threatening violence against Wilders.

Prosecutors said Latif posted a video in 2018, offering a 3 million rupee (some 21,000 euros at the time) reward for the murder of Wilders. That video came after Wilders said he planned to hold a cartoon contest depicting caricatures of the Muslim Prophet Mohammad. The competition was later cancelled.

Images of the Prophet Mohammad are forbidden in Islam as a form of idolatry. Caricatures are regarded by most Muslims as highly offensive.

Reuters was not immediately able to reach Latif - who received a five-year ban from cricket in 2017 over a spot-fixing scandal - for comment. Latif, 37, captained the Pakistan team in the 2010 Asian Games.

Wilders, 59, is one of Europe's most prominent far-right leaders and has been a key figure in shaping the immigration debate in the Netherlands over the past decade, although he has never been in government.

His Freedom Party (PVV) is the third-largest in Dutch parliament and is the main opposition party. Wilders has lived under constant police protection since 2004.

In his victim statement, Wilders addressed Latif directly, saying he would not be intimidated.

"Your call to kill me and offer a reward is despicable and will not silence me," he said in court.

The Netherlands and Pakistan have no treaties in place regarding judicial cooperation or extradition and earlier cooperation requests in this case received no response, the prosecution has said.

What a tool. Hopefully he gets jailed..

This is why people need to be careful making dumb claims. Inciting people to kill someone. Yeh everywhere is not pakistan. There are laws.

Now he cantwnleave pakistan, he leaves interpol will get him

Only noteworthy thing I remember Khalid doing was winning the U-19 WC in 2004. He was a flop at international cricket.

Shameful act from Latif, also shameful act from Wilders.

It is a tough one as neither deserve any sympathy or justice in my book.

While what Wilders did was shameful. But you cannot incite people to go kill someone no matter what.

Wilders although comitted blasphemy, but he did rape or kill anyone, which are bigger crimes no matter what other may argue.

Blasphemy hurts the sentiments of the people but does not cause any direct physical harm to anyone.

Pakistanis think that world should revolve around them and islam and dont understand thats not how the 90% of the world thinks. Basically khalid latif did what our politicians have done in the past. When you become a hated figure in public, use religion to clean your image. Thus, the corrupt spot fixer decided to win back his fans by showing that he loves the prophet and decided to incite people to kill Wilders. He knew no one would actually do it, but what the idiot forgot was that you cant incite others to kill someone. That is illegal, and plus, he was an ex cricketer, this was gonna get some attention.

He thought, just like how no one would find out that he was making an extra buck by spot fixing Isb United games, he would also get away with inciting death threats and win back his fans.

But, while pakistan is a banana republic, the rest of the world isnt.

Khalid latif basically can never step foot out of his country now. If he does, he is going to be arrested. I hope pakistani authorities arrest him and could extradite him. If he admits and apologies, he will probably get a lighter sentence, but still saying that i will give money to kill someone is still a crime.

Anyways, by admitting his corruption, if he thought he could get some games in retired leagues, he blew up that chance now cause good luck stepping foot out of pakistan.

There was a brilliant t20 game in Manchester where him and Sharjeel smashed it in front of the noisest crowd ever on English shores.

He would have played a bit more had he not got done for fixing.

A perfect example of the Pakistani mentality of we will die for and kill for Nabi (saw) but won't live for or like him.
yup. Quite ironic actually.

The guy involved in selling his country and being corrupt wanting to kill a person who made fun of his religion.....

My driver in Karachi knew Khalid Latif from his days in the Karachi Gymkhana.

I asked him several times if he knew Khalid had a character problem - but he gave me the same answer every time.

“ You can never tell someone’s true nature - it is impossible to tell..”

:)

By the way he played for Malir Gymkhana.

Talent is nothing without brains, Khalid Latif is exhibit A. This is what lack of education looks like.

i meet him years ago. I would say 2010-2012 time frame. He was a bit off .

A Dutch court on Monday sentenced former Pakistan international cricketer Khalid Latif to 12 years in prison for urging the murder of anti-Islam MP Geert Wilders.

Latif, 37 – who captained Pakistan at the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou – offered €21,000 (US$22,500) for the head of Wilders in an online video after the firebrand lawmaker sought to arrange a competition for cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed.

“It was not a stretch to think that somebody around the world would have taken heed of the call to kill Mr Wilders,” presiding judge G. Verbeek told the court.

“The accused knew this and his call fuelled the fire to have Wilders killed.”

It is extremely unlikely that Latif, who was convicted in absentia, will serve his sentence. Dutch authorities have sought in vain to question Latif over the case and requested legal help from Pakistan, also to no avail.

Wilders cancelled the cartoon contest after protests broke out in Pakistan and he was inundated with death threats. He has been under 24-hour state protection since 2004.

In the Netherlands, the plan to stage the contest was criticised widely with politicians, local media and ordinary citizens slamming the idea as needlessly antagonising Muslims.

But the call to kill Wilders appeared to resonate in the real world, with a Pakistani man sentenced to 10 years in prison in 2019 for plotting his assassination in the wake of the cancelled contest.

However, Verbeek said that Latif had benefited from his fame as an international cricketer to “add oil to the fire” at a time when the Netherlands was already the target of several threats.

I stand with my deer brother, countryman, and cricketer Khalid Latif.
For what?

Inciting hatred?

Asking people to murder someone?

You are so far off the religious bandwagon that even brotherhood wont save you.

his new video came out. He has double the reward. What a stupid guy he is. Hopefully he rots in jail and gets caught.

He said he doesnt believe in the law.

Funny how the guy talks about the shaan of the prophet, yet he fixed matches and was involved in corruption. Typical hypocrite

Please learn the definition of murder before accusing someone of “asking people” to do it.

Wilders the Dutchman is not a “someone”. He is a criminal who committed blasphemy on multiple occasions.

So-called “religious bandwagon” have stellar morals and they would never disrespect or blaspheme against any creed, faith, or color.

Stop trying to whitewash the whole situation and withholding important details.

That’s your opinion. That being said, send me the video.

Khalid was not proven to have fixed, but he did equip the straps on the bats. Mohammad Nawaz was also accused in the same scandal. He remains a star international player and regular XI member to this day. I wonder what’s the double standard.

He fixed. He admitted what he did. There is not point of arguing when a criminal has accepted that he was guilty.

Mohammad nawaz was banned for not reporting an approach.

Khalid the criminal was caught spot foxing and he even admitted.

Maybe use your brain to differentiate

you are the goalshifting. You came in defending his fixing and equating it to nawaz and now i told you both cases were different you are coming with this post...

Offocurse his past will be bought in to discussion because his past is what insults Islam.

A spotfixer who was involved in corruption, is giving out a supari to kill people in the name of Islam

Can you tell me what happened to khalid latif? I ironically don't have any clue, I saw his one game with sharjeel and him opening and the 2 pair dismantled England.

I didn't think of him as much but I thought he was decent at the time. Ofcourse that's the only game I ever saw of the guy and them he vanished.

A wonderful player of spin, he played ISB united. In PSL 2, he was caught spot fixing with Sharjeel Khan and other players like Nasir Jamshed were also involved.

PCB caugth these guys are the right time, Najem Sethi was chairman. They were giving signals by changing grips etc. The PCB was told about the fixing before hand and they allowed it to happen to catch in the act. They were suspended and given 5 years ban. At the end both the players admitted they were guilty.

Later Khalid Latif wants to win back his creadibility, so some idiot in Norway plans to burn a Quran and commit blasphemy. Now in Pakistan nowadays if you show people you love the prophet by saying all blasphemers must die, you win the support of the people. So this idiot put out a hit on the guy in Norway.

Norway courts took notice of the fact that a celebrity is giving out bounty contracts on one of their nationals, a case takes place in Norway and the verdict is this guy needs to do 12 years of prison there.

Now Khalid again came online with two molvis giving more threats and doubling the bounty. This case will get more dirty and PCB might have to get involved here now. I think if Khalid steps foot out of Pakistan he will get arrested. Maybe not today or tommarow but 10 years down the line, this guy can be stepping foot out of the country and interpol will have hand cuffed

Bruh this sounds like the plot of a Hollywood movie 😂. Then again this is still not as messed up as the zulqarnain haider incident.

I stand with Khalid Latif. He is a hero of Pakistan. A true patriot of the land.

You have still got it wrong.

If Islam is your connection, then nationalism has no place in Islam.

You say hero of Pakistan? Shouldnt it be hero of Islam?

In your eagerness to defend your brother, you somehow thought nationalism is equivalent and part of Islam.

Islam is a worldwide religion. It is not just constricted to Pakistan.

Khalid Latif is a hero for this story and his amazing achievements for Pakistan cricket.
