:)) The only team which a single poster didnt even vote for in the poll :))

Was just having a look at Hong Kong's team and not a single Chinese/Hong Kongese (if that's what they're called) in the team. All immigrants from Pakistan/India and even one from England. A few players were born in Hong Kong, but even they are sons of immigrants, not proper Hong Kong/Chinese people. Disappointing, I would have thought they'd have at least 1-2 non Hong Kong immigrants in the team.

HK team used to have 1 Chinese guy in their squad just for the sake of it. Chinese people in HK have absolute no interest in cricket. Many don’t even know the name of it, always confuse it with Baseball. HK squad has 80% Pakistanis.

Someone has just voted for Hong Kong now as the poll is still open! Cheat :P

On a serious note, the fact that no one gave Hong Kong a vote is why we love sport. Unpredictable, anybody can beat anybody. You can be a good looking team on paper but cricket is played on the pitch! Bring on this tournament! Let's hope Hong Kong don't upset us.

In a rain-affected final of the Asia Cup Qualifier 2018 in Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong beat the United Arab Emirates by two wickets (DLS method) to book their place in the Asia Cup.

A fine five-for from Aizaz Khan first helped Hong Kong restrict UAE to 176/9 in 24 overs, the innings affected by a long rain break, before Hong Kong found enough contributors right through their chase to get to their revised target of 179 with three balls left.

Hong Kong, with the benefit of knowing their target and the number of overs at their disposal, started well with Nizakat Khan and Anshuman Rath, two of their most pedigreed batsmen. The two added 64 runs in just six overs to put Hong Kong in front before Rohan Mustafa had Nizakat’s number, sending him back for a 20-ball 38.

Then followed a good phase for UAE as Babar Hayat and Kinchit Shah followed Nizakat to the pavilion to leave the scoreboard reading 68/3, which became 82/4 in the 10th over when Ahmed Raza bowled Rath for 28.

Ashfaq Ahmed played a blinder, scoring 79 in 51 balls Ashfaq Ahmed played a blinder, scoring 79 in 51 balls
UAE were in front at that stage, but Christopher Carter (33 in 32 balls) and Ehsan Khan (29 in 24) made sure the game was back on an even keel with a 53-run stand for the fifth wicket. A dramatic game took another turn when Carter was run out and Mohammad Naveed struck twice in one over to leave Hong Kong at a precarious 147/7.

It could have gone either way then, with the target still some runs away, but Scott McKechnie and Tanwir Afzal swung it back, this time decisively, Hong Kong’s way. Afzal fell off the last ball of the 23rd over for a 12-ball 15, but Hong Kong only needed three runs then, and they were scored without much fuss, McKechnie ending unbeaten on 14 from 11 balls.

Earlier, the UAE innings was a two-part affair, of 15.2 overs first and then 8.4 overs, broken by a long interruption because of rain and a wet outfield.

Off the last ball before the players had to go off the field, Aizaz hit Rameez Shahzad’s stumps to send the No.4 batsman back. That left UAE on 65/3 – a slightly slippery slope for a 50-over innings.

But Ashfaq Ahmed was still there, unbeaten on 43 in 40 balls at that stage, and he really turned it on once play resumed. When Aizaz came back to finish his over, Ashfaq sent him for a six and a four, and Shaiman Anwar joined the party with six, four and six in the very next over, bowled by Ehsan, as the ball started going to and over the boundary ropes with alarming frequency.

There was a brief roadblock in the 20th over of the innings, with both Anwar (22 in 14 balls) and Ashfaq sent back by Nadeem Ahmed, but the blitz didn’t stop. Each of Muhammad Usman, Adnan Mufti, Naveed, Amir Hayat and Abdul Shakoor hit one maximum in their brief stays in the middle, and UAE reached a relatively strong score as a result.

Despite the carnage, Aizaz was hugely impressive, his five overs – 3.2 overs before the break and 1.4 after – going for 28 runs as he picked up five wickets with his medium pace.

In the end, that made the big difference.

Hong Kong will now prepare for their Asia Cup opener against Pakistan, to be played in Dubai on 16 September, followed by the fixture against India, also in Dubai, on 18 September.

UAE coach Dougie Brown and Hong Kong captain Anshuman Rath react to Hong Kong's heart-stopping win in the final of the Asia Cup Qualifier, which secured their passage to the Asia Cup proper and eliminated UAE.

UAE posted a total of 176/9 from their 24 overs in a match affected by the weather, with Ashfaq Ahmed top scoring with an impressive 79 off 51 balls. However, Hong Kong chased down UAE's total with just three balls and two wickets remaining, denying them the opportunity to compete in the tournament taking place in their own country.

UAE could perhaps count themselves unlucky as their innings was interrupted by a rain delay after 15.3 overs with the score on 65/3. When the rain came to a halt, the game was turned into a 24 over a side match and the UAE batsmen did brilliantly to hit 111 off the remaining eight and a half overs.

The chase was tight from the outset, with UAE marginal favourites at one point after they dismissed Hong Kong's top four batsmen in the space of four overs. After losing their eighth wicket in the penultimate over, Hong Kong managed to eke out the three runs required for victory to reach their revised target of 179.

UAE's coach, Dougie Brown, was understandably very disappointed at the result. He said: “Gutted doesn’t even come close to describing the feeling right now.

“I think the guys deserve a hell of a lot of credit for the way they fought. We didn’t get everything right. We maybe didn’t bowl as well as we can do. We maybe didn’t field quite as well as we know we can, but to get into the position we did, to get into the position where we had the total to defend we ended up with, was a phenomenal effort. Credit to Hong Kong, they won some critical moments in a game of very fine margins.”

Hong Kong's captain, Anshuman Rath, acknowledged UAE's efforts. He said: “The UAE batsmen batted tremendously well after the rain delay. To get that many runs in 10 overs is no joke on any ground. The momentum was with them, but we knew it was a good wicket.”

"Games like that can go either way, so credit to UAE for playing such an awesome game. We knew we had the batting firepower to chase it down, and luckily that happened."

Hong Kong now join India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan in the Asia Cup that starts on September 15th.

International Cricket Council (ICC) today confirmed that it has awarded ODI status to all matches in the upcoming Asia Cup, which will take place in Abu Dhabi and Dubai from 15 to 28 September.

ICC Chief Executive David Richardson said: “To grant ODI status to all matches in the Asia Cup is a positive step taken by the ICC Board as we continue to take an in-depth look at international cricket structures in relation to our long-term ambition of growing the game and adding to the one billion fans who already follow the sport.

“This decision was informed by our review of the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier earlier this year where there was a mix of games with and without international status which proved to be confusing for fans.

"In order to simplify the situation we will extend the ICC Cricket World Cup principle of all matches being ODIs to other tournaments where a number of the teams have ODI status and some not, this includes the Asia Cup and ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifiers.

“The fact that these events are open to teams beyond the existing 16 teams that currently have ODI status is important and, accordingly, ensuring all matches are granted ODI status is befitting of the events and just reward for the teams that have qualified.

"Of course all T20 matches between ICC Members now have T20I status and we are in the midst of reviewing the whole issue of ODI status, which review should be completed in the next few months.”

Hong Kong are the only team in the tournament without ODI status and they will play first round matches against Pakistan and India on 16 and 18 September in Dubai. Apart from Hong Kong, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka will take part in the two-week event. These five sides will feature in the 10-team ICC Cricket World Cup 2019, which will take place in England and Wales from 30 May to 14 July 2019.
