Kowloon Cantons, joint winners of last year’s inaugural T20 Blitz, have pulled off another coup by signing Pakistan’s legendary big hitter and former captain Shahid Afridi for this year’s tournament.

Cantons set the benchmark in 2016 when they landed the prized signature of former Australia captain Michael Clarke.

And the popular franchise – launched by nine cricket-loving Hong Kong women and ex-Hong Kong captain Rahul Sharma – have done it again in 2017 by signing 36-year-old Afridi, one of the most flamboyant limited-overs batsmen of all time.

“I am looking forward to playing for the Kowloon Cantons in the Hong Kong T20 Blitz,” said Afridi, who has played in the Hong Kong Sixes.

“I’ve heard good things about the tournament and look forward to playing in Hong Kong again, a place where I always enjoy the atmosphere, people and hospitality,” he added.

If ever a player was programmed for T20 cricket, it is Afridi, who holds the record for most international wickets in the 20-over game at 97.

He is also a master batsman in one-day cricket and formerly held the record for fastest century in 50 overs, off 37 deliveries, against Sri Lanka.

He has played 27 tests for Pakistan, scoring five tons and eight fifties and taking 48 wickets.
Afridi has also represented his country in 398 one-day matches, scoring six centuries and 39 fifties, with 395 wickets.

In 98 T20 matches, he has four fifties and 97 wickets.

A spokesperson for Kowloon Cantons said: “We are thrilled to have such a fantastic player come into our Kowloon Cantons family, we have always looked at this tournament as a way to promote the game in Hong Kong and to provide more international exposure to our young domestic talent.

“We are sure that Shahid Afridi’s presence will once again bring this tournament into the global limelight.”

Hong Kong national skipper, Babar Hayat, will captain the team and he is supported by last year’s teammates Shahid Wasif, Tanveer Ahmed and Ehsan Nawaz.

Joining the Cantons line-up this year will be Hong Kong players Giacomo Lamplough and Waqas Khan, Hong Kong Dragons player Ming Li, and young local talent Angus Robson. Craig Wright leads the team as head coach.

Also taking part in the tournament are Galaxy Gladiators Lantau, City Kaitak, Hung Hom JD Jaguars and Hong Kong Island United.

Cricket Hong Kong’s Max Abbott said of Afridi’s signing: “It’s a great boost for the tournament and obviously very exciting for fans to have Shahid Afridi coming to the Blitz.

“Kowloon Cantons set the standard last year on their overseas players with Michael Clarke and it’s a great credit to them to be bringing another international superstar.”

Guess that is the next stage of his career.

Hong Kong cricket board really are doing a fantastic job. First Clarke now Afridi, very impressive work.

Any way to watch this tournament?

The HKCB have ran live streams for every senior match of the HK national side, I'd imagine they'll do the same here as they are going to great lengths to stream as often as possible to gain some mainstream attention.

Tim Cutler their CEO is on twitter, maybe ask him. Doing fantastic work, easily one of the most well managed cricket boards.

Wow from playing Big Bash League, IPL, SLPL, CPL, T20 Blast to such a dead tournament what a downfall

He is retired, he ll play from where ever offers are coming
Btw in past, shane warne, glen mcgrath, lara, wasim akram, anil kumble among others have played in hk

I used to love the Hong Kong Sixes.

They don't host that event any longer?

Ah. I just left Hong Kong for good. Would've definitely watched a game or two otherwise.
Kowloon Cantons is so cliched though. :))

Funny we have cricket tournaments there. HK has no cricketing legacy and locals have abso-absolutely no idea what cricket is.

They just got Kumar Sangakarra as well.

Damn, how the hell are they affording this. Impressive stuff but I'd wonder if the money would be better spent on making the side fully professional.

Sangakkara has been absolute garbage in t20's after he retired.

Another joke of a tournament.

So many big names. They must really be splashing a lot of cash.

The tournament only lasts a couple weeks and someone pointed out to me the IPL isn't long after so these players might be using it as a warm up exercise, but surely it must still be costing a fair bit of cash/

I am surprised Afridi is not playing BIG BASH.

Even the likes of Broad, Sanggakkara, Pollard and other crap players are getting a chance. I guess they are not offering enough Cash?

Better managed than 75% of the full member boards.

Most definitely but there's one problem, I'm not sure as to how of Hong Kong's local population is interested in cricket. You mostly just see people from other, cricket crazy countries in their team. Most other assosciate nations like Ireland, Scotland, Nepal, Kenya and even the Dutch have their local population interested.

Why isn't HK seen on the international level even as Minnows ? Do they have a side recognized by ICC

City Kaitak 199/6 (20/20 ov)
Kowloon Cantons 204/2 (14.3/20 ov)
Kowloon Cantons won by 8 wickets (with 33 balls remaining)

Dwayne Smith 121* off 40 balls, 7 fours and 13 sixes

Umm, what kinda boundaries do they have there? :danish

They are minnow level. per the ICC they're rated 15th in ODIs and 14th in T20s and have ODI status as an associate.
Depending on how China wants to go with cricket (they really should replace or merged with the China team seeing as the PRC now has claimed Hong Kong for good), could be a good developmental opportunity, especially in a country that historically has not had a major cricketing culture. The Chinese don't seem into baseball, just Olympic sports.
With China, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Afghanistan, the future of cricket as the major Asian sport would be assured. Even South Korea has shown some promise in the area.

I should also add that Hong Kong's T20 Blitz is turning a little bit into PSL 2.0. Most of the stars from the PSL have gone on to Hong Kong to play there now.

Interesting to see that Ahsan Ali is in one of the squads. Didn't get a bat today but let's see how he does in the coming games.

LOL :)) :afridi1

the bowling quality is suspect and the small boundaries don't make it any easier. Case in point a hack like Sammy was smashing sixes at will.

Boundaries are pretty big. Though the bowling is mostly half-volleys. Some insane hitting still.

Misbah-ul-Haq 82* off 37. He hit 6 sixes in a row, although not in the same over as Ajmal had strike for first ball of 19th over and he took a single off that.

DAMN!
Major I guess you were right. Misbah is one of the best six hitters in the world

Misbah should play these types of tournaments where grounds are smaller, fielding and bowling are club level and no pressure to choke

Local Hong Kongers do not show interest in cricket at all. All club teams in Hong Kong consist of Pakistani and Indian players.

Misbah is only good for this kind of tournaments. A seriously limited player in the shorter formats.

why is Umar Akmal not playing in this competition?
it's the only place he can score, ideal for him besides eating competitions

That Anshuman Rath kid who plays for Hong Kong is a serious talent. He actually goes to school in Harrow (in London, those who live in UK must have heard of Harrow) and has played club cricket with one of my school friends
