How can Pakistan reach the Semi-Finals of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 now?

if india beat s africa, pakistan still have chance to qualify by winning remaining matches. its very much a possibility. pakistan is a very good cricket team. sometimes they are unsure about their game and todays match was one of them.

I remember a certain World Cup in 1992 where some said we don’t deserve to be in the semi final!

Don't get your hopes up, South Africa look nigh unbeatable and will probably beat India barring another Kohli special.

The weirdest part is almost everyone expects Zim to lose all its games lol without realizing they are undefeated yet.

They have been in Australia for a month. They had to work hard to qualify for the WC but the pressure has made them battle hardened.

Pakistan are out.

Zimbabwe beat Bangladesh and NL that's 7 points, India will win their remaining games.

Couldn't care less if we deserve it or not or even whether we're good enough.

Let's win our next 3 games and take it from there.

Two good days after that and we're champions!

Every team is thinking of winning it.. deserving or not deserving is irrelevant.

I just hope we can beat Netherlands and Bangladesh and not finish bottom of the group.

That's the spirit! It's how 1992 happened.

Worst case would be if we sneak a win in the other 3 matches, the remaining results don’t go in our favour/ some matches are rained off and we go home with Saqlain / Babar saying:

- we won most of our games, we got unlucky with the rain/ other results/ we always start slow / we’ve won the New Zealand tie series and got to final of Asia cup / there’s no need for major changes etc etc

So, if India defeats Pakistan in cricket then India creates hurdles for Pakistan ? Then better stop playing cricket in tournaments where India also participates.:shappy

Where did I say "if India defeats Pakistan in cricket then India creates hurdles for Pakistan"?

I dont think India will lose on purpose, they have a point to prove, they had a bad world cup last time around, and it is clear, they want to finish top of the group, and will want to be the number one team in this group. Losing a game, can really make your team lose momentum as well, I do not think India will lose on purpose.

If they do end up losing, I think it will be simply due to the fact that South Africa were better on the day. I think India will win ever game in group stage.

The real question is

Can we lose to Netherlands and still somehow qualify by opening threads?

agree.. didnt actually see the schedule... if it was last game and Ind had already qualified ..may be.. but they wont in the middle of tournament.. agreed

SA are strong favourites to beat India at Perth.

We may as well start packing our bags.

agree.. didnt actually see the schedule... if it was last game and Ind had already qualified maybe, but they won't in the middle of tournament. agreed

Exactly if it was last game of the group and they qualified, I do not think India would through the game away, they still want to end group stage on a winning note: because they want to be the top team, and they want to carry momentum, however if they lost, and people assumed they lost on purpose, it could make sense why people would assume that (since it is the last game, and they qualified).

Middle of the tournament they will try there best not to lose the game. Even India has still not clinched qualification, (India will and should win vs Netherlands and Bangladesh) but this game vs South Africa, if they will it should guarantee them semifinal spot. So India will not lose on purpose, people feel to see that, they can lose yes but it won't be on purpose.

India will play SA at Perth. Yes. So....

India has three tricky matches. Matches vs BD in world cups have been close. Zim match will be interesting. SA game is tough. If India wins against SA, they will have great confidence for the rest of the WC.

You would have them as favorites against Bangladesh and NL, that's all they need to give themselves a chance of qualifying.

Damn didn't realize Zim is in the mix all of a sudden. I'd back them beating Ned. BD game could go either way. If they beat BD, they can afford to lose to India and still qualify if Ind beat SA.

can Pakistan Qualify if South Africa beat India at Perth, India loses to Bangladesh (rain shortened or some Taskin/Shakib magic), Zimbabwe lose to Bangladesh, and maybe one other rain affected match for India. So South Africa top group, we come second, India/Zim third. :)

Pakistan are out. People need to move on.

India lost 2 games last year and didn’t qualify.

If by a miracle, Pak did; it will haunt them, the charade would continue

Zimbabwe only has to beat BD and Ned and they will be one step closer to semi.

Can Netherlands beat Zimbabwe?? Or if it rains in one of the remaining Zimbabwe games against BAN or NL.
basically the biggest threat now is Zimbabwe more than anyone else.
situation will become very clear by end of Sunday, as we would know if Zim lost to Bangladesh or not and If India beat South Africa or not. if those two dont happen then our chances drop down to 1%.

Do they deserve to qualify for the semi-finals after the first 2 performances - the answer is NO!

A big thank you for taking the time to make this :)

I think only chance for India to beat SA is if we get to bat first. Don't think we can chase on this Perth wicket.

can Pakistan Qualify if South Africa beat India at Perth, India loses to Bangladesh (rain shortened or some Taskin/Shakib magic), Zimbabwe lose to Bangladesh, and maybe one other rain affected match for India. So South Africa top group, we come second, India/Zim third. :)

If BD wins vs Ind, Zim and lose to Pak, they will have 6 points. Pak can get a maximum of 6 points in the remaining three games. If SA win against Ind, Ned and lose to Pak, they will have 7 points. If Ind lose two games and wins one, they will have 6. So whoever has better NRR between Pak, BD and Ind goes to SF.

BCCI bigwigs know scenarios like this occur. That's why the last league game of the tournament is between Ind and Zim so India can make up the NRR. Despite the upsets in your scenario, SA and Ind will sneak through

After two rounds of matches the qualification stakes in Group 2 are beginning to take shape, with India in pole position and Pakistan in a heap of trouble.

But it’s still all to play for as the six teams of Group 2 compete for a pair of places in the semi-finals of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022.

We take a look at the state of play as things stand, and explain how Pakistan could still qualify.

Who’s in the driving seat to reach the semi-finals?

India are top of the group with a maximum four points from their opening two games and are in a prime position to qualify for the semi-finals.

A Net Run Rate of +1.425 is a strong start too, and it will take some turnaround for Rohit Sharma’s side to be prevented from a top-two spot.

The rain-interrupted no result between South Africa and Zimbabwe has both teams just a point behind India with three games to play, and that could make all the difference come the final standings.

Zimbabwe’s stunning win over Pakistan has given them a chance, but they will likely still need to win at least two and maybe all three of their remaining fixtures.

South Africa have the edge over Zimbabwe thanks to a phenomenal Net RR of +5.200, created by the crushing 104-run win over Bangladesh on Thursday.

That in itself is effectively worth an extra point at this stage.

Can Pakistan still make it?

Two defeats, both coming on the final ball of matches against India and Zimbabwe, have left Pakistan needing something special to make it to the semi-finals.

It is now unlikely that Pakistan will reach the final four, but not mathematically impossible.

The first task for Babar Azam’s side is to win all three of their remaining matches, starting with Netherlands on Sunday, then South Africa on Thursday, 3 November and finally against Bangladesh on Sunday, 6 November.

It is out of Pakistan’s hands however. If any two of India, Zimbabwe or South Africa win two of their remaining three matches then they will finish with more than six points – the maximum that Pakistan can reach.

Net RR could yet be a factor, so a big margin of victory in at least one of the remaining games wouldn’t hurt either.

Key Upcoming Matches

Bangladesh v Zimbabwe – Sunday 30 October

Whichever side wins this will throw themselves right into the mix for qualification with two matches remaining. The bowling units of both teams have been impressive in flashes throughout the tournament so far, so it should be a fascinating encounter.

India v South Africa – Sunday 30 October

A massive game in the context of the tournament, India could all but seal qualification when the world’s second-ranked side meet the team in the third place in those rankings. Both teams will still be confident of qualifying, but a loss for South Africa would leave them particularly vulnerable given they dropped points in the rain against Zimbabwe. Mathematically it makes sense for Pakistan to want a South African defeat in this game – an uncomfortable position for the supporters to be in.

Pakistan v South Africa – Thursday 03 November

Depending on results in the matches before them, Pakistan’s meeting with South Africa in Sydney could be enormous for both sides. It's a huge clash between two of the better teams in the world even without the context of qualification being at stake.

Remaining Group 2 Fixtures

Sunday 30 October: Netherlands v Pakistan, Perth Stadium

Sunday 30 October: India v South Africa, Perth Stadium

Exactly
Which is how we are eliminated.

Zim will best netherlands and bangla and go through VERY SIMPLE

Pakistan only have themselves to blame. Losing 2 games which they both should have won.

Cant expect bangladesh to beat this zimbabwe team. The way bangladesh are playing it is not possible.

Pakistan need results 3 ways to go in favour of them.

Pakistans batsmen have let them down massively. Babar azams extremely low profile captaincy has been another major reason for this position pakistan are in.

Couldn't care less if we deserve it or not or even whether we're good enough.

Let's win our next 3 games and take it from there.

Two good days after that and we're champions!

Every team is thinking of winning it.. deserving or not deserving is irrelevant.

Well said. Can't stand the doom and gloom of these fairweather fans. Leave the crying and hangama part for Indian fans for their team, but unfortunately we aren't any different. You lose and swords come out

I know most of you are pretty upset and angry and so am I.

But, is there any hope we can still reach the semis from here? What miracles do we need?

Or is it bye bye Pakistan from the worldcup now..

Not going to happens and should not happen , such a low level team should come home on next flight. Free trip to Australia of some pathetic and some unfit players should end now.

People are overrating BD and underestimating Nederlands here.. Nederlands are more dangerous team than BD on these condition.. BD don't have the bowling for these condition and lacks fire power in batting department..

Don’t want this team in SF. They don’t deserve it. It’ll only lead them to be more stubborn in their outdated approach. Something needs to show them the mirror.

If SKY defeats South Africa and Pakistan also qualifies, he won't be soo over rated after all :P

Love this post. Simple as that.

We have dominated in tournaments in the past where we have come out bad. So why not take this route.

Only thing that matters is the trophy. Backing the team, and other scenarios :P

It’s hard to digest losing back to back to our 2 rivals in India and Zimbabwe. Thankfully we don’t have to face our third rival Afghanistan in this group.

But it’s okay, because SA are historically bigger bottlers than we’ve ever been, so we have to pressure them with the blade of Shan and Iftikhar. Hope Nortje is ready for a phainty of his lifetime.

I still back this team to make it to the semis. India is due a loss soon, can’t be bailed out by free hits and wides every game. Their Mr Nice Guy routine is about to come to a halt Vs Zimbabwe.

#WeHaveWeWill.

Don't worry dear Pakistanis
Pakistan cricket team have already qualified for "JINNAH INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT PAKISTAN"
And will soon reach there.......

Thanks for capitalizing the whole name of the airport. Shows how much respect and love India and Indians have for Jinnah.

Keep winning the next games to be played and that is the way you keep your chances alive in this games . Winning ives u more confidence and what Pak needs now is a win in the next game

It doesn’t get much more heartbreaking than a last-ball defeat to neighbours and rivals India in front of a packed crowd at the MCG. But perhaps a loss on the last ball to Zimbabwe in Perth might just trump it.

Two defeats by the narrowest of margins have left Pakistan on the brink at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022, but not yet totally out of the picture in terms of qualification for the semi-finals.

“To be honest, it's hard (to qualify now), but we have two days, and we'll have a sit together and discuss,” a glum Babar Azam said in his media conference after the loss to Zimbabwe.

“We will come back stronger," he continued. “To be honest, we were not up to the mark, starting with the first six overs in the bowling, but later on we finished well.

“But in the batting time, we had our collapse. The batting was not up to the mark. When me and (Mohammad) Rizwan were out, Shan (Masood) and Shadab (Khan) built a partnership, but after that collapse we did not finish well.”

Out of Pakistan’s hands

Pakistan will need to win all three of their remaining fixtures [more on those shortly], while also relying on other results elsewhere.

The maximum number of points Babar and his side can now reach is six. So essentially the situation is this:

If any two of India, South Africa and Zimbabwe win two of their remaining three matches then Pakistan will not qualify. That is a certainty.

Were Pakistan to finish on six points with only one team above that tally then it could come down to Net Run Rate – with India and South Africa currently well ahead in that column.

But the clearest and ‘likeliest’ route to a Pakistan qualification would require them to win their three remaining matches, India to beat South Africa, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe to top the group, and Zimbabwe to fail to beat one of Bangladesh or Netherlands.

So not mathematically impossible, but that is a lot of results that need to go in Pakistan’s favour.

Can they hold up their end of the equation? Here’s what awaits in the final three matches...

Pakistan's three 'must-win' fixtures

Sunday 30 October: Netherlands v Pakistan, Perth Stadium

Pakistan will need to win and win big against Netherlands to set the tone for their chase of a semi-final spot. The other match results on Sunday 30 October could also be vital, with Bangladesh playing Zimbabwe earlier in Brisbane, before India and South Africa follow Pakistan’s game in Perth. It has been 13 years since the last and only T20I between Pakistan and Netherlands, a match that the Asian side won with ease.

Thursday 03 November: Pakistan v South Africa, SCG, Sydney

Potentially the decisive game in Pakistan’s unlikely revival sees the SCG host a massive Group 2 fixture. South Africa are ranked third in the world at the time of writing, and possess a fiery bowling attack and powerful batting unit. But Pakistan’s record against the Proteas in recent times is good, with six wins in the last eight T20I meetings.

Sunday 06 November: Pakistan v Bangladesh, Adelaide Oval

If Pakistan are still alive on the final matchday then they will fancy their chances against Bangladesh. The recent T20I record in this fixture is heavily in Pakistan’s favour, with eight straight wins (and one abandoned game) since the Tigers last won in March 2016.

ICC

Pakistan are out.

Zimbabwe beat Bangladesh and NL that's 7 points, India will win their remaining games.

I don't believe for one moment the India v SA game is a foregone conclusion.

Sunday game of India vs SA will be huge for Pakistan perspective of their semis hopes. If India Beat SA their hopes remains . So first of all watch out India Vs SA on Sunday and thenafter do the calculation

If Ban beat Zim, Ind beat SA and Netherlands beat Pak on Sunday, then can Pakistan qualify?

I'm very interested in this scenario to redefine cornered kittens.

You want Pakistan to lose 3 and sneak through so everyone pretends that Pakistan is best team in the World ??

Correction
Bangladesh can qualify if they win all 3 remaining games they will finish with 8 points.
If there is any other mistake plz point out.

BD are extremely weak against pace. Even if they run India close , they will get wrecked by Rauf and co . We can safely rule them out as contenders.

It's between India, SA, PAK and ZIM. Even India is not assured of qualification . Muzarabani , Ngarava, their left arm spinner Ervine and Sikander Raza can trouble us too.

Personally I'm hoping that BD beat Zimbabwe and Netherlands shock Pakistan so that India's path becomes easier.

It's a lot closer than a lot of people think. :inti

You want Pakistan to lose 3 and sneak through so everyone pretends that Pakistan is best team in the World ??

Going by that logic so if England has lost against Ireland, I guess we can call them not the best team as well and doesn't deserve to sneak in even if they were to lose further game? That's how these tournaments work at times as luck plays a role.

A team which has consistently been good in group stage has consistently choked as well in semis and finals (men in blue) in last decade, how would you describe that team or their luck?

If England lose 3 on a trot, they wont deserve to qualify either.

But Pakistan probably deserves to qualify losing 3 on the trot and rain because Pakistan is that good.

Perth is going to be cloudy on Sunday. So you can expect the ball to do some very strange things. And Perth has a fast bouncy pitch even otherwise.

South Africa's pacers will be all over India like a rash. This is going to be India's most difficult match.

What if india vs south africa game washout? Pakistan still qualify? .What if Zimbabwe beat India.

Then it would be down to NRR b/w Pak and SA , if Pak beat SA. Don't think we can beat SA's NRR of +5.

We also need BA to beat ZIM tho. In all honesty its looking very difficult for Pak right now.

The forecast for all the remaining matches is good. I think we've seen the last of the washouts.

The best possible scenario for Pak to qualify is for India to beat RSA and Ban to beat Zim while Pakistan obviously need to win all their games.

If RSA beat India on Sunday then it's pretty much Game Over for Pak (mathematically they will still be in it, but it will be an almost impossible scenario)

The situation looks grim for the Men in Green and Pakistan skipper Babar Azam is aware of the same. During the post-match press conference, Babar admitted that it’ll be very difficult for Pakistan to reach the semi-final after losing to Zimbabwe.

“To be honest, it’s hard (to qualify now), but we have two days, and we’ll have a sit together and discuss,” a glum Babar Azam said in his media conference after the loss to Zimbabwe.

“We will come back stronger,” he continued.

I think PAK are somewhat lucky to be in with even this much of a chance. SA-ZIM not been washed out, probability of PAK qualifying would have been even lower.

What tweaks could be made in the current t20i world cup for the Pakistan team now?

Alright, it's all doom and gloom but considering that we still have a few matches left, what changes could be made to the playing XI to be able to compete better?

I believe that the bowling line up (that we played against Zim) is pretty good and you cant change much there.

Perhaps an unfit Shaheen could be replaced by Hasnain and that's about it.

In batting, the openers have failed and middle order has again struggled.

So could a case be made for Babar to drop at 3 and Rizwan at 4.

Haider is horribly out of form so why not give him a go as an opener? I know people are going to be mostly mad at this choice but what are the other options?

Partner him with Fakhar if he is fit, otherwise Shan.

The line up could look something like:

Haider
Shan/Fakhar
Babar
Rizwan
Iftikhar
Nawaz
Shadab
Waseem
Shaheen
Naseem
Rauf

What are the tweaks that you would make?

Technically yes if we hammer SAF, Netherlands and Bangladesh and somehow squeeze through on NRR.

If Zimbabwe beat India we are relying to Babgladesh to do the same and again squeeze through on NRR behind Zimbabwe (who would be group winners)

It’s a lot easier however if India and Bangladesh both beat Zimbabwe (realistic scenario..) and of course India beats SAF :)

Powerplay is vital, the best chance of hitting the most boundaries is the power play. Pakistan needs to hit maximum boundaries in the power play. Send your aggressive players to open. Drop Babar and Rizwan to the middle order.

It’s difficult but not impossible if we thrash Bangladesh and Netherlands

Depends on the toss

You want Pakistan to lose 3 and sneak through so everyone pretends that Pakistan is best team in the World ??

Not a care in the world about “best in the world titles” only care about winning the WorldT20

Win all our games & pray for ALL the other games being washed out 😂😇 just need some luck & the cornered tiger attitude

Pakistan needs to make sure they win the remaining three, and if after that they still don't make it then it won't be too bad of a world cup outing considering India and Zimbabwe one went down to the very last ball.

It's been a tournament infested with rainouts and empty stands so there's not much of excitment anyways

For hope and inspiration, see how Afghanistan qualified for WC2019 through WCQ 2018....they literally came back from the dead.

So you never know, anything is possible.

Not too bad????

It's the only sport we can even remotely compete in and yet we lost to a non entity in Zimbabwe and threw away a 95% winning position v India.

Pakistan has to win all its remaining games comprehensively - against NL, BAN and SA.

And

Pakistan has to hope that India loses to SA and also either to ZIM or BAN.

Don't see any other way.

Yet again, Pakistan's chances depend on how the others perform.

If Zimbabwe beats India as well- Zimbabwe will be more likely to make it rather than Pakistan .
