What's new

How did Shaun Pollock manage to achieve so much success as a bowler?

So the second best cricketer from SA is not an ATG?

Pollock will easily get into all time XI of India, SA, Pak, SL, Eng, Aus, WI, NZ in ODI format.

He will also a strong condidate if not a guarateed spot for all time XI of most countries in test format.

And yet, he is not an ATG,lol.
I'm not sure if he would get into Pak ODI All time XI.

That doesn't make him not an ATG of course, he is one of the best to have played the game but if I was selecting a Pak ODI XI the all rounder places would be taken by Imran, Wasim, and Afridi to cover all bases.

Test XI yes.

Perhaps I am being over patriotic and nostalgic of our past, happy to be corrected.

He was phenomenal in 90s and up till 2002. Declined post that but continued till 2008 due to added ability of batting. A top 20-25 level bowler and a batsman good enough to bat at #8 or even #7.

Most of the people commenting did not see Pollock bowl. When he came on to the scene he was actually pretty quick and lost pace later.

Regardless throughout his career he had impeccable line and length and was able to get movement like crazy in most conditions.

Yes.

I think this forum has a lot of Gen Z kids. They didn't watch players like Pollock. They give their opinions based on Cricinfo stats. :inti

Pollock is a South African legend. He was one of their main bowlers in the late-90's and early-2000's.

Pretty underrated to say the least.... He was a top bowler for Saffers in the presence of Natini etc.
700x the allrounder Jadeja will ever be.

A much much much better player then Cummins. Pollock is on par with wasim akram in status but doesnt get the attention of a 250M population.

Although yes Wasim is still a much better bowler though with Pollock being a much better batter.

I believe those metrics cancel each other out and you can put them as =. But both of them are solid match winners for their team. Goat players.

Not only that but also 700* the bowler Waqar was :wy

He was a beast in 90s and actually performed vs top teams both home and away without bottle caps.

Pollock was a great bowler, he was just in an unfortunate situation because South Africa's main rival was an ATG hall of fame Australian side that grinded the South Africans to dust..

Numbers don’t lie. Those in this forum know that I always speak with facts and below is again an evidence of how underrated Pollock is.

If we look at 90s decade and performance vs major teams like Aus, SA, WI, Pak, Ind and Eng, stats tell us:-

Pollock - Avg 21

Now compare it to,
Wasim - Avg 24
Waqar - Avg 26
Walsh - Avg 26

Pollock was a top tier ATG bowler in 90s.

Wow Ambrose absolute beast in the 90s, I remember India's tour of WI in 97 I believe, he was making it awkward as hell with the bounce and seam movement for the Indian bats.... Indians were lucky to only lose the test series 1-0...

No, I'm the one who always speaks with facts and is known for his credibility.

consistency is key and Pollock is a great example of that. Consistent with line and length and at the end batters would just give up and give him the wicket. Economy rate 3.67 in 303 ODIs, phenomenal.

Unfortunately he was also consistent in choking hence he didn't achieve many ICC trophies.

Credibility of speaking false facts? Perhaps true. :lol
I am incapable of lying.

We dont spread lies like jadeja being an atg even if he played an atg losing knock last test game.

Second best metronome bowler I've ever seen after the great Glenn McGrath. Overall, the third greatest metronomic bowler after Glenn McGrath and Richard Hadlee.
