How did the number 1 ranked T20I team lose to this South African team?

This is shocking. SA are playing newbies like janneman, dala, simpala ( I don't even know their names properly) and still have won 2-0. What's happening here? Is this a one off or are there some issues with the T20 lineup?

Jokes apart, Pakistan lost both games because of poor finish. Bowlers go for runs. That's what happens in T20 cricket. Pak was in the hunt in both games until the end

Maybe his constant shellacking of his bowlers is not for show?!!

There is no no.1 in T20 mate. Its an unpredictable game of cricket. Pakistan bowling cost them both games, have u seen shinwari last over 23 runs the difference in losing us the games. Even in the last match he cost us.
 
Because its T20I. Anything can happen.

Also, lost to SA by mere 7 runs, that too in their conditions.

I don’t understand what’s the big deal
 
Like it or not. Sarfraz is a big miss as captain in T20s. The only format where his high intensity, danda approach works well.

Law of averages. Since that was used to defend India and England's hammering in the CT.
 
Pakistan is still a very good T-20 team. Due to nature of format, a top team can lose series as well against newbie teams.

Hafeez is a fabulous T20 player. If he was playing we would have won both games. Malik is finished as a t20 player. Sarfraz is a good T20 captain and ODI he is ok. But pak bowling is a worry, shinwari is just terrible. Hope he doesn’t play again.

He might not be great as a player, but don't forget U19 world cup and CT17 were won under him. As a leader he is our best shot

Pakistan had a good ODI series in my opinion. I already have a thread on that. But losing in this fashion to lowly SA in T20 format is unacceptable. Full stop.
 
Pakistan played really well trying to chase down two big targets. Both excellent games of cricket.

It's T20 it can happen. To ask the question means lack of basic understanding of the game and this format.
 
C-class team of South Africa, to be fair. Disgusting thing for us and our confidence. Hopefully, we will learn from our mistakes

I disagree that he's our best shot.

Hafeez makes the team on merit, Sarfraz doesn't, and his shrewd brain will be required at the World Cup.

Sarfraz can still play as a keeper bat unless we find someone better .
 
Pakistan lacks power hitters, can't win high scoring matches. They mostly win scoring 150-160.

Despite lack of power hitters they did well to get to 186 and 181.

One or two power hitters and they will easily be in the 200 range.

But it ia a very weak SA attack. Against good attack they won't even get near such targets.

Exactly brother [MENTION=134608]Hawkeye[/MENTION] . This was a shocking performance against a 'C' side of SA. They aren't even that good in this format. :facepalm:

Tell me one good reason that he should not be the Captain? What did the same team achieve under Shoaib Malik that so many people were raving about a while back?

Most people wanted Amir and Faheem out, they were dropped intentionally.

Ranking in T20 has no relevance for a one on one series or few matches. Ranking does not guarantee wins but form, passion and performance on that day gets the win. T20 is an youngsters game and Pakistan team need to evolve now by junking 35 plus players irrespective of their status and blood young men from first class circuit to give them adequate exposure at highest level to enable them to graduate to other formats on sheer merit.

Because Sarfraz isn't good enough to lead in the longer formats.

We can do so much better. We're on a losing streak against the top5-6 sides since 2017.

Malik is rubbish, I've been saying that for a long time.

In Tests I agree with you. But for ODIs and T20s he has shown much better performance than captains before him (Misbah/Afridi/Malik/Azhar) . We could have possibly won the NZ and SA series had it not been for the rain hit matches.

In T20s yes, not ODIs, but we're gonna have to agree to disagree. :)
 
IT is T20. Anyone can win. Just one batsman needs to click. Just one batsman to make a mess. One bad over can cost the game. One good over can win the game.
 
1.Mind blowing decision of playing Shinwari after his poor showing in ODIs, 4 wicket was due to reverse swing that does not happen often now days, and poor shots.
2. Asif a tail ender in the team as a batsman.
3. Missing Sarfraz captaincy and commentry from behind the stumps updating the team on what the score is.

If Pak played its full T20 team it would have whitewashed SA. Our bench strength is just pathetic and our bowlers overrated. Amir, Faheem, Shaheen and Junaid one of the better ones.

Hafeez is even better than Malik in ODI's. Hafeez in the middle overs is very underrated here on Pakpassion.

Amir is not that great in ODIs, but in Tests and T20Is he is a quality bowler.

If you look at his stats you will know Amir would have made a huge difference. He never goes for runs like Hasan and Shinwari did in the end overs. We lost by 6 and 7 runs, if he played we would be the series winners now like we have been previously in presence of him. Amir was the Man of the Series in NZ.

our bowlers definitely need someone constantly yelling at them.. don't think Malik's friendly and backseat style works, as shown by the back to back 180+ scores
 
If Sarfaraz were the captain, Shinwari wouldn't have been bowling the last over.
 
What's the problem here. Team played well lost on the last 2 delivery I would say. That's how close T20 games are.
But fans here , I mean are laughable - When team plays bad abuse everyone. When team fights till last ball again abuse everyone. When Sarfi in abuse him. When Sarfi out praise him. When Shinwari out Amir in. Abuse him. When Shinwari in abuse him then and praise Anir.

Lol - Becoming Arsenal fans are we.

Yet for 11 consecutive series, the same thing happened. Pakistan won and won. So, why? Saying that the bowler suddenly lost the plot explains nothing. Why were they so relentlessly disciplined for 11 straight series, and lost the plot now? One feels the change in captaincy is the only plausible explanation.
 
Had Sarfraz captained, we would have restricted them to 140-150 in both games.

Not that low because this is not the uae but he would have been giving the rocket to the bowlers ( rather thanSA batters)

they scored 180 and 200 odd last year against NZ in NZ

scored around 180 odd versus Australia in Zimbabwe
 
It's t20. A highly unpredictable format.

Number 1 ranked teams aren't immune to losing, and plus, they almost made it, but for some silly dismissals.
 
Reasons are...Wrong team selection with shinwari instead of amir who on this slow pitch would have been effective. That stems from the coach who also happens to be karach kings coach where shinwari often bowls poorly ( remember his no ball in a crucial game), Poor captaincy. Fakhar not learning that they keep bowling to hill pull shot and he keeps obliging. Babar not finishing the game again. Asif ali not for this level full stop. Malik not promoting himself for some reason and the list goes on.. selectors culpable for not trying new players and saying some of our best bowlers are not fit for selection but they are playing in t20 leagues. Also how does haeez always get a gig but on a pitch tailer made for spin and his kind of get to 20 batting, he is dropped. Baffling planning
 
The margins of defeat were 6 and 7 runs. Both times, Pakistan chased and collapsed without being able to accelerate despite the early platform being provided.

However, one over determined the outcome in both matches.

Malik’s over in the 1st T20 (12 overs) which was the first in the innings and Shinwari’s over in the 2nd T20 (29 runs) which was the last in the innings.
 
Because the no.1 ranking is as bogus as it gets. Aus (even without Warner and Smith), SA, Eng, Ind and NZ all have better batting line ups.

Barring a series in NZ and the tri series final, a full strength team has minnow bashed and still somehow lost against a SA B side.
 
No side has ever been as consistent in the most inconsistent format of the game, its why Pakistan are no. 1. They lost two close games in foreign conditions missing their captain, Amir and playing a string of young players. Talat has only just returned to the side, as has Asif and Imad has just come back from injury. People are so terrified by how good Pak are in the format they think a bunch of guys in their early 20s is an unstoppable juggernaut.
 
Ranking in T20s mean nothing. Most teams rest their key players and any team can lose to other team any day.
 
It's not like we lost huge. Both games were close and could have swung our way.
This is the slam- bang version so improvisation is the key. You need to play smart and hard and as a batsman, hope you can connect more often than thou miss

I think the key difference was the last over where Shinwari went for 29 runs
 
T20 matches are like bullet or blitz chess
Even the world champion Magnus Carlsen regularly
Loses games as white against nothing much lower rated
Grandmasters as thete is a lot of variance in the game.

I think pak are the better t20 side with out doubt but ssrfaraz rollicking players in this format is golden and no way he would allow shinwari to bowl last over. And would get his bowlers to thrown in mostly off cutters and leg cutters
 
Sarfraz is flavor of the month after losing T20I's.

Malik was the flavor for one game in ODI's after he won one game, but as soon as he started losing 3 on the trot, Sarfraz is the flavor again.

When has this team learnt from mistakes ?
For T20, PCB must hire Afridi as Coach . He can teach boom boom pow to these t20 tuk tuks
