Excellent thread.
It's a fine balance.
Better to direct the discussions onto specific and factual territories (where meaningful discussions can be had) as opposed to ones where emotions & interpretations rule the roost.
Why Modi is completely useless as a PM --> Bad topic
Why Modi's economic policies have failed --> Good topic
-----
Why BJP/Modi/Amit are fascists? --> Bad topic.
Why BJP/Modi/Amit didn't handle Delhi riots well? --> Good topic

Keep it based on facts.
When they get emotional, bring the discussions back to facts.
When they quote fake news, bust it and divert to facts.
When they attack Congress as a defense mechanism, divert to facts.
When they blame Muslims for everything, divert to facts.
Of course, do acknowledge the fair points.
And stop using words like "fascists", "communal", "secular", etc, etc. It just makes people tune out.
As long as you are in the factual territorry, you don't have to back down and the relationship doesn't get damaged too.
