Hafeez was a man of purple patches. In his good times, he looked absolutely sublime. I mean his shots just were so incredibly classy. 11 odi centuries is considerable, especially when it comes to Pakistani batsmen. Not to mention how he would then contribute as a front line bowler too. He even scored big test runs during these purple patches.
However the reason Hafeez’s stats don’t reflect the above is because in his low points were really low. He was so bad that you wouldn’t believe he knew how to hold a bat. He became, for example, Dale Steyn’s bunny at one stage of his career - Steyn would only have to look at Hafeez and Hafeez would lose his wicket. And then at the same time, his bowling contribution would be nothing at all. And these lows would continue for just as long as the highs.
Thankfully for Pakistan, the Hafeez of late has been the first type - the one who makes big, important contributions. It’s a shame he hadn’t been this consistent his whole career, as he would be ending as an all time great if he had.
As it stands, he finishes as a very good limited overs cricketer, with particular excellence in T20s. He isn’t in the same league as some of our all time greats, but he has nonetheless been a fantastic contributor to our success. I for one will miss him.
