NZ Tri-series win could not have come at a better time for the team's confidence but the real test is coming up.

Given our current resources, how far do you think Pakistan will go in the World Cup?

Pakistan is winning this world cup, beating South Africa in Final at MCG and England in Semi Finals.

Winning twice against a side where Kane, Boult, Southee, Conway and Neesham play at their home is some achievement for a mid tier team like Pakistan. They should reach Semi finals.

Its hard to predict.

I would say we would get knocked out in the semi finals.

They could win the entire thing based on a few thoughts.

1. They have to restrict the opposition to 160-170 in almost all games.

2. They have to bowl first which means winning every toss.

If they bat first, the approach of building the innings doesn't seem to give any safety. You have no idea what target to set.

Even if Babar and Rizwan make 70-0 in 10 overs and have a target of 170 to achieve, they have an idea and rest of the team can target it.

But batting first, this is a dilemma. If you hit 70-0 in 10 overs, is 170 going to be enough? Is 160 enough?

So I am betting semi-finals is a sure thing.

Then we need to win the remaining two tosses to win the tournament.

Depends on which India show up. I see South Africa going through for certain, then it’s a toss up between India and Pakistan.

they will reach the finals and rizwan will play a blinder of an innings and win the tournament for us

If Rizwan plays a blinder to win the finals, I will retire on this forum.

Pakistan's world cup fortunes depend on Shaheen's form after the injury. If Shaheen can still get the ball to swing into the right-hander at 145+kph with the new ball Pakistan will likely atleast reach the semi-final.

Semi-final probably.

Pakistan are likely to face either England or Australia in the semi (if they make it).

Pakistan’s focus should be to win next 4 out of 4 matches and improve NRR

Babar has to take leaf out of Australia 2015 or 1999, they lost close contests v New zealand, their trans tasman rivals and latter one by just 1 wicket which deeply hurt Aussie pacers. It kicked in Aussies v badly as their defeat to England in 2021 world cup.

Instead of venting frustration on this game in which we bowled poorly in the end like srmi final of world cup last year & Asia cup final, focus needs to be to win next 4 matches.

Our fans become too emotional as it is end of the world. Unlike last year world cup Semi final where it was the end. It is just a beginning.

Every single ICC trophy pakistan has won has started with a defeat.
1) 89 Nehru cup
2) 92 world cup
3) 2017 icc champions trophy
4) 2009 T20 world cup

It is about mental strength, our boys need to have fire in their belly & up for the game 4 mini-finals

Zimbabwe, Holland, South Africa ( virtual quarter final) then banglafesh.

World cup does funny things
You never know india might lose heavily against Proteas at Perth WACA as pitch will suit South African pacers.

NRR might come into picture.

What pakistan shall not do is bottle it
As india did in 2021 they suffered badly v Nzl and Asia cup v sri lanka.

Hayden is an Aussie he needs to say all this.

Take it hard steven waugh way in 1999 and win every single match of world cup.

Exactly. Indian batting was exposed tonight. If it wasn't for Kohli and Pakistan choking it in the last 3 overs they could have lost with a big hit on their NRR. Now with India winning the game on very last ball with a NRR of only +0.050 has the group open for any of India, Pakistan, South Africa and Bangladesh to take the 2 semi final spots.

After today's game i have firm belief we are playing semi final. We are not losing anymore gane and India is winning all the games. Pakistan qnd India to qualify.

Only one minor thing Pakistani team is a bottler & you cannot compare them to someone like Australia

Very difficult for Pakistan to reach Semis after this heart' break game. If they loose against SA they will be out of the World WC. India and South Africa will most probably qualify from this group.

We have to win 6 games in a row to win this tournament

Can we do it?

I cannot see Pakistan beating South Africa on any Australian ground. We were just beaten by a poor Indian side, where we threw away 2 points in a choke-job.

Zimbabwe at Perth will be difficult aswell. We saw how Afghanistan troubled England at Perth yesterday, and our batters are horribly out of form for them to make any meaningful contributions.

Need to drop Shaheen, he is not fit. Bowling harmless 80 MPH dollies will not work on these wickets.

Pakistan's zilch middle to lower order, outdated openers, a bowling attack which falls apart under pressure, a captain who goes in with a script and allows the opposition easy singles on a platter. This team will do very very well to reach the Semi Finals.

We could get out of the fairly easy group to reach the semis.

Don't see us beating Australia or NZ or England whichever team shows up then.

48 runs in 3 overs, we ain't going far after last game.y

It is T20 cricket, it is not choke job, things happen, wake up guys. Yesterday So called Best pacers of Aussies gave 56-60 runs in 1st four overs of the match.
So was that a choke ? Or England beating Aussies last year in world cup by chasing in 11/12 overs. Aussies still recovered their NRR massively.

If mindset is we cant win, then stop watching or supporting team. In 2015 odi pakistan did beat proteas in world cup game in Australia. We can beat them & win 4 matches in a row.

1) Australia loses to NZ in the inagural match - CHECK
2) Pakistan loses to INdia - CHECK
3) Australia - CHECK
4) A top class left arm swing bowler - CHECK

It is happening

1992 !!

todays game has laid bare the problem with playing 3 seamers, think they'll realise they need four seamers, which might just be the way to go, but SA are no mugs. need to also bring back fakhar, shan played well to keep pak afloat today but 0 sixes in 40 balls is a problem, in fact he didnt even come close to hitting a six.

death bowling will be a problem throughout the cup. so pak have two glaring weaknesses, they shouldn't go far, but with pak u never know. esp now that they'll be forced into reassessing the defensive strategy.

Agree. Pakistan vs SA game is at Sydney where spin will come into play. Only problem is Pakistan having one leggie and one left arm spinner and SA have many left handers in that line up.

I'm backing Pakistan to go long in this world cup. The likes of Babar and Rizwan will not fail often. They will come to party in remaining games. The crucial game will be the semi-final game. If Australia for some reason does not qualify for semis then I fancy our chances against either NZ or England.

For Pakistan to progress further in this world cup we need a reliable middle order bat who can score runs in this world cup. Who would be that? I sincerely hope Fakhar comes to party for us in this world cup.

I think today's loss would have definitely hurt them... Either they'll loose the moral completely and will not be able to qualify for semis,
Or this hurt and no ball cheating could lift them as a group and they'll fight and win the world up now.. That is how Pakistan generally operates...

Indias pace bowling troubled these guys, i dont think these guys can survive here against likes of Rabada, Nortje and Ngidi.. Early exit finishing 3rd in the group..

Maharaj and the left arm medium pacer (forgot his name) are also very good

SA have a complete bowling attack

Rizwan struggling against pace and bounce in Aus, evident from the warm-ups itself..

Babar actually in poor run of form since Asia cup...

I dont see them go past group stage when they are happy to play batsman who uses helmet as a bat.. :sarf_facepalm

Yeah they obviously will stat pad against Bangladesh, Zimbabwe and Netherlands

Tell us something we don’t know!

Yes they might even beat India, their only weak link was Bavuma the captain.. They also got Rilie Rossou back..

Their batsman love pace and bounce , their bowling is all boxes ticked, batting seems no real issues, fielding obviously it SA

They are one of the favorites in this WC, if they dont choke in knock outs can lift the cup..

Shamsi Maharaj Nortje and Rabada very difficult for this dummy batting 2 points today would had made it lot easier

Pakistan can beat South Africa in Sydney. South Africa haven't beaten Pakistan in WC's (both ODI and T20) since 1999.

You are mistaken. They will play on a completely different surface. SCG is probably the closest to UAE pitches. Slowish it will effectively neutralize SA's fast bowling threat.

If India gets their clock cleaned by SA at Perth and Pakistan narrowly beats SA then India will be the one in trouble. Nobody is safe yet, Nobody is out yet.

Cornered tigers approach, man thank God we won this game, this is going to be a close tournament.

Here is something I know. Even if the likes of Babar and Rizwan help in wins in semis and final you would still find reasons to castigate their performance.

Group 2 is set up in such a way that if both Ind and Pak does not qualify for the semi finals, I'd be extremely shocked. And then when in the Semi-final and final. One good/bad game can make the difference between lifting the cup or going home regardless of how consistent a team has been throughout the main round.

I feel it's about time for South Africa to end their losing run against Pakistan in T20 and ODI World Cups and send Pakistan crashing out of this tournament.

I think that is better than us getting to the semi-final because otherwise the problems in this team and set-up will not be addressed.

We lost the Asia Cup final against Sri Lanka recently in embarrassing fashion. Has anything changed? We're playing with the same team, same captain and still have the same useless potato as Head Coach.

Here is something I know. Even if the likes of Babar and Rizwan help in wins in semis and final you would still find reasons to castigate their performance.

That's never going to happen for 2 reasons:

1. Babar is a mental midget who won't be able to cope with the occasion of a high pressure knockout game
2. Rizwan has been found out. You can block out his scoring areas by pitching it full and wide. Sri Lanka did it to him in the Asia Cup final and India did it today.

Pakistan needs to find a way to play 5 pacers. We just don't have the batting for these conditions. Need to drop Asif for sure and get Wasim Jr in.

If you really want to go with a fearless positive not scared to lose approach then get Hasnain in the team and make him bowl his full quota up front and tell him nothing less than 148 km/hr.

If you will not use your 144 km/hr pacers in Australia then where will you use them? Take a gamble and attack with your bowling. Get Shadab and Nawaz up the order, drop the extra one to two batsmen who are doing nothing on these wickets.

The only way Pakistan will be any where close to competitive in this competition will be to strive for wickets throughout the 20 overs.

I don't see any other way for this squad

With all due respect to India, their bowling is one of the weakest in this group. South Africa arguably has the best bowling attack in this World Cup, specially with Rabada and Nortje in good form. Our batsmen have been exposed by short balls by Pandya and Arshdeep, how do you expect them to survive hostile pace bowling against the two speed demons above?

I give Pakistan no chance against South Africa to be honest, even before the World Cup I had marked this match as a certain loss. Very disappointing to lose 2 points today, as they were very important. Anyway, it’s sport, anything can happen. Hope for the best.

If India gets their clock cleaned by SA at Perth and Pakistan narrowly beats SA then India will be the one in trouble. Nobody is safe yet, Nobody is out yet.

These pitches help the mediocre Indian bowling. Even though I think SA is the fav vs Ind, the game at perth gives a chance to Indian bowling. India I think has 2 or 3 batsmen that can thrive in any given game and take it deep.

We need to put this game in a box ASAP and move on. At the end of the day we lost on the very final ball against an ATG-level knock. Yes it hurts but we were not blown out of the water or humiliated as the meltdown suggests, it's just one group game.

We didn't need to beat India to qualify for the semi-finals, focus needs to be shifted to winning the rest. Would be silly to let this 1 game derail the tournament. Final 4 is very achievable.

Say what you want BUT That loss to India will heavily mentally impact the players.

In most of our previous WC losses to India we hardly every got even close to a winning position, it was always like we had accepted from the go that we had lost and we needed to move on and focus on to the other remaining matches of the tournament.
This time however, we were pretty much in a position where we should have won it comfortably. But from there completely bottling it and being absolutely torn apart under pressure will definitely leave scars on our team's mental strength for a long time.

I highly doubt we can find enough mental strength and fire to win 6 matches in row after that devastating ending. Reaching the semis would be a massive achievement.

Semi Final in my view unless rain intervenes. Final seems out of their reach now

Babar and Rizwan need to give solid 43/0 in PP starts. That is key to Pakistan's success.

Apart from that, Pakistan need Shan Masood and SSA at their best.

As long as these happen, Pakistan's tournament will only end if and when they meet England.

They are the only team who can beat Pakistan comfortably without breaking a sweat.

Love and Respect for Team Pakistan!

Pakistan had an unfortunate loss against India where the difference between the teams wasn't much. The bad umpiring mixed in with some bad luck led to Pakistan losing the game on the last ball.
However, Pakistan fought like champions and I would like to give my respect and love to team Pakistan.

The Pakistan players might be demoralized at this point after that defeat but I hope and pray they stay positive through out the group stages to the semis as I belive this team has the ability to reach the final.

Babar and Rizwan are yet to fire as they did not fire in the first game and middle order showed some hints of coming back into form. I also feel Pakistan has the best fast bowlers in the tournament.

Well played to both teams. Kohli put away any doubt that he’s the GOAT t20 batsman.

Would love to have both teams in the final just like CT17, because of how close they are in terms of performance.

Also want to see Rauf Vs Kohli again.

Called it here first but we are winning this tournament :)

There are reports that South Africa’s tomorrow’s match might be rained off as well, because heavy chances of rain in the afternoon.

Although in Stdney weather forecast changes rapidly and we do not know it’s authenticity.

But if Proteas lose a point tomorrow it will serve Pakistan better.

I want to see us get revenge on India in the final. England and Australia both look weak despite being seen as favourites and I certainly back India to get through them to the final. The question is can Pakistan win all their games from here which interestingly is a situation Pakistan love finding themselves in. We saw it in CT17 and in world cup 2019 aswell where we were simply unlucky not to qualify after winning their last 4 matches.

India vs Pakistan final on the cards boys.
And I'm backing Pakistan Insha Allah

Pakistan might reach final as they are a strange team.

India will crumble against New zealand or England.

India can reach Final if they meet Aussies. As Aussies now a days prefer to please BCCI & play soft v India.

England & Kiwiz are ruthless against India in General.

It's pretty clear that with rains and washouts, this is going to be a chaotic tournament and many of the favorites would be out on account of some easy match getting washed out or curtailed. I expect Pakistan team to win this tournament because this start stop chaotic tournament is meant for Pakistan who would struggle to give consistent performances in normal situations but can be extremely good in these situations. They have a superb bowling attack, an extremely underrated but one of the best T20 all rounders in shadab and strangely this time around a very safe fielding side thanks to a lot of youngsters. I have put my money where my mouth is and have backed Pakistan to win the tournament at the current odds of 8/1.

Depends how quick we can get over that opening loss. Need a strong performance vs Zim to bring the confidence back.

As long as it doesn’t rain we should be fine to qualify for semis

SA is the knockout game

Don’t see losing to other three

Australia is a strong team also
England is a little inconsistent - they really need a joe root in their team over David Malan

NZ is ok - they clocked against Aus. They only have one solid t20 batsman in Devon Conway - rest can be managed

I think you’re under estimating rizwan and Babar

They’ll Bounce back this game as long as ball doesn’t swing

SA batting is very suspect

We will find out after ZM match if this team can pick themselves up and play to their potential.

Probably won’t reach the semi finals.
I will be pleasantly surprised if they do.

Sticking to my guns! Predicted this, two weeks ago into another thread.

Wishful thinking and being positive is one thing, but one should try to strike a balance with ground realities and bitter fact.

But since one should never lose hope, lets hope for the best.

Shan performing but SSA lack of penetration in PP could have won Pakistan both games
