How good a captain is Virat Kohli?

All the bits we at PP never forgive our captains for.

So wonder what the view is about Kohli in his first real test at home.
 
Fair weather captain.

Clueless and easily lets emotion cloud his judgement when on the back foot.
 
Safe to say that his captaincy has not impressed me as much as his batting. Still a good leader and expect him to improve tactically.
 
Loses it when under the pump.

But has a lot of potential to grow.

I would want him as my captain regardless.

Who else is there lol.

The problem is Kohli the player can improve when down,but to lift a whole team when we have humiliated by a team terrible at playing spin would be a huge task for a captain and lets see if he manages to do so.
 
Appalling use of the DRS in particular.

But he won a series in Lanka coming back from a deficit so let's not write him off.

Ashwin seems like a great thinker of the game, has a better control of his emotions too.

Sure he gives confidence to players, the issue is it's clear when he's rattled and that rubs off onto the other players.

He needs to keep his cool in such situations :msd :bm

At least that was in England, MSD at his worst never lost this bad home or away.

India were torched at home within 3 days and couldn't even manage to bat a days worth of overs.

Have you forgotten about England 2012? We were terrible across multiple tests bar the first one where a Sehwag hundred saved the day.

As commies keep saying that Kohli's style is infectious. So his negative approach will also rub off on others.

He was poor in this match but this was his first loss after ages. You got to back him for rest of the series.

That was a quality England team with KP,Swann,Cook etc.And we were carrying deadwoods like Gambbhir,Sachin,Zak

this is way worse
 
Kohli shows too much emotions on the field. I m not suggesting him to act like robot Dhoni, but he should try to hide his frustration.

This is a quality Australian team as well. Starck and Smith, two of the best players in world cricket is currently playing for Australia.
 
as a tactician he's pretty average. Have a feeling he will get run ragged when India play in England SA and Aus and are under the pump.

This team lost 9 previous Tests in Asia on the trot AFAIK.

Smith is good but was lucky this innings.Starc should be a non-entity in India
 
People were saying similar things after the 1st Test in Sri Lanka. How can long can a purple patch last. The law of averages has to strike some day. Have some patience and give some credit to Australia.

How is the captain responsible for catches dropped by Vijay and Mukund :misbah
 
Mediocre captain. Has a few plus points like his backing of pacers even though they be rubbish and the energy he displays on the field but the negatives outweigh the good. Waiting for Kohli to end up dropping one of Pujara or Rahane for one of his buddies, even though they are two of the best three batsmen from India.

Is Rohit still injured?

Seemed to be flapping at times. Agitated and panicked.
 
Not as good as his batting but he makes the game exciting.

India will win a lot of Tests under him but they would also lose some matches which they wouldn't have under a more conservative captain.
 
He is a good leader. Not all captains are like Dhoni and Misbah.

Other seniors have to step up and help the team remain calm.

I will wait for him to tour away from Asia to judge him. He was neither a great captain due to winning all matches earlier nor a poor captain due to losing badly in one test. A rookie and has a long way to go.

It will always happen. Indians will lose some tests badly and win more the way he captains, but true reflection of his captaincy will be when he leads Indians in SA, Aus, NZ and Eng.

I think Kohli will be a better overseas captain than Dhoni and we got a glimpse of it in Australia. At least he will go with the mindset of trying to win the series, something that Dhoni was not very good at.

It will depend on set of pacers to be honest. If they do well under Kohli then Indians will do better.

Have you checked the margin and the severity of that loss?

Under 3 days, 333 runs, team hardly played 40 overs in the 2nd innings on a pitch that helps Indian spinners?

If you flip the situation then pretty much other captains would have drawn rather than won a test after opposition puts 400-500 runs in first inning. It will cut both ways. He wasn't great due to winning those tests as well.

I get your point but I have to reiterate: 1 loss after so many wins and he is a bad captain or cant captain a side ? Come on bro you are better than the wrist cutters here..

well we ask this of every captain - nothing wrong with asking that question. Of course he can prove us wrong in the next game.
 
I feel like he looks good when the team is winning. But when losing, he loses it. He panicked ans wasted so much reviews and was showing too much energy towards his teammates. This is not good attributes for a captain
 
Good captain.

One loss doesn't mean anything. Better than Smith too.

Yes, an actual assessment of his captaincy will come when he's gone through the rigors of captaining when the chips are down multiple times. The next match will be a good indicator, if he brings the team morale back up, we're in for a good show. There's no better teacher than experience.
 
I guess a real and proper assessment of his captaincy can be made after a few defeats and after a few lessons are learnt.

Anyone can look a good captain when the team is winning.
 
India not able to play even decent spinners at home so god saves us in next match if we lose toss on flat Decks
Drop KL rahul and Vijay as opening become a big problem !!
 
He hate losing and looks frustrated whenever that happens

Not a fan of kohli's batting but i love's his never losing attitude

Not sure whether he can be a good captain but surely can be a successful one
 
Cannot say before he leads India on a difficult away tour. Kohli is in my view the best batsman in the world, but his captaincy hasn't been tested in any great capacity thus far. I wager he'll be hard pressed to be spoken of in the same league as Dhoni or Ganguly, as his temperament is somewhat suspect. Always felt Dhoni was given a hard time by certain Indian posters, much as Misbah is given by some of our own, and in hindsight they will realize that the grass isn't always greener.

Hes a raja of India but outside we will see what happens. Love his batting I think captaincy should have been given to ashwin. He seems to have real knowledge about the game.
 
Lets not forget that he's had an amazing start, this loss just shows how great the team has been that they have beaten sides like NZ, SA in similar pitches. He will obviously have his lows, this is his first, how he comes back from it will define him and the team.

They batted first in all the completed matches against South Africa, which is why they won those matches. The pitches for the series against New Zealand were nowhere near as bad.

Desi's generally have weird ways to decide on who was better player/captain .... we seem to judge our heroes based on bad matches rather than good wins. So all that Kohli's team achieved in the past will pretty much be forgotten sooner than later.

The flaws were apparent even when India were winning.

Not saying that Kohli is a bad captain, I just feel that he needs to keep his emotions in check if he wants to be a great captain.

The moment India are in a bit of trouble, he looks visibly rattled and begins to make decisions on emotion (using reviews in quick succession purely because Australia were breaking away). When your captain looks lost and frustrated, don't you think that will brush off on the other players?

His tactical side of the game isn't anything to write on about either, some of the bowling changes he made in Australia's second innings at crucial junctures of the game were awful and only aided Australia in getting further ahead. Then there's giving Starc a new ball to hit around when Australia were 9 down in the first innings. :facepalm:

He is under pressure but I expect him to bounce back. He is young and has a lot of potential for learning. Over time, he will mature and not let his emotions get the best of him.

As a matter of fact, India might even lose this series (probably won't happen), but like I said, he will bounce back to take redemption.
 
For me, he's the best captain for India. Astute knowledge of the game and backs his team no matter what. One defeat doesn't change anything. Wouldn't be surprised if he leads India to series victory in England/South Africa/Australia. Definitely going to win more than 40+ test matches.

Sure. After losing to a team like WI at home and then going ahead and getting a pasting in Aus/NZ. I can see how a 42 yo Misbah is prepping to lead Pak to WI :))

you can laugh all you like but the adversity Misbah has faced and then to maintain a record Pakistan have at home and away for so long is something Kohli in the same situation wouldnt be able to manage.
 
India needs a proper batting coach. Sanjay Bangar seems to be not doing his job right! It is not about basic technical things, it is about what's happening around and what's the specific problems of each player at current point of time! For instance opening is such a key factor. Even when we had Sachin, Dravid, Laxman and Ganguly, we needed proper and consistent openers. Even before Sehwag we at least had openers who were giving good starts (it is not just about seeing off the new ball, it is also important to "start" an innings on good note, so that others can follow). Sehwag only came then to take it to next level (winning lots of matches and even overseas!) Current openers look like are playing for themselves (1 big innings here & there to cement their place and if you observe the other opener has failed miserably in the same innings!). Rather they should start playing for the team (the job of openers to give the start and play consistently well)

Actually, I shouldn't make assumptions like that. It is possible that the coach and team management asked for this pitch without Kohli knowing, even though that is unlikely.

I got this from an article that was posted on cricinfo. Can't post the link here but you should check it out, it's a good read. A little tid-bit from the article, titled "How the Pune pitch backfired on India":

ESPNcricinfo understands that given the nature of the soil, a mix of two different black clays, the pitch needed some grass to hold it together in such heat. That it was too big a risk to leave it as dry as it was left. The curators had relayed this information to those in power, but were overruled and were asked to give in to the team's demands conveyed to them through the BCCI top brass.

Yes the home season has helped but this is an amazing captaincy record. Might end up as the greatest test captain of this era.
 
We will know by the end of 2018 Australia tour. We have to travel South Africa, New Zealand, England and Australia back to back.
 
Was amazing in 2nd test against Australia when Indians fought back on day 2.
MSD is arguably the best Indian captain but even under him I seldom saw India fighting their way back into series after being down and out.
 
He's done a couple of things which our captains struggled to do in last 110-12 years.

1. Series win vs SL in SL
2. Series win vs SA at home (we have won them in just one series in last 20 years!)

The real challenge as he has himself said many times, starts when we play away from home and the series in SA later this year followed by tours of Eng and NZ next year will show us how good a captain he is.

His focus on away tests and nurturing pacers is a welcome change from Dhoni era when away tests were for practice and pacers had to be used strictly for line and length bowling.

W/L alone can't make anyone the greatest captain of any era. Tactical skills, man management etc plays a huge part. Win/loss is too much dependent on relative strengths of teams.

He's not, please this myth needs to die a quick & painless death. Saurav & even Kapil did more for the team, Dhoni had a ready made side lined up not unlike Ponting.
