I know many of you think he is the second coming of mo Asif.
I know the jaded amongst you may even settle for an early Umar Gul. Leaving aside bowling skills, They are both considerably taller than him and get a different bounce.

But having seen him bowl a few times now the names that spring to my mind were Tanvir Ahmed, Yasir Arafat and Azhar Mahmood. Now certainly the latter two are illustrious company but with their strictly medium pace delivered from an average height they remained county Giants. So this is not being unkind to abbass. Just stating the obvious that he’s just a run of the mill seamer who are dime a dozen on the uk county circuit.

Abbass is a lovely bowler but in uk just like you very rarely could expect Azhar mahmood to be The spearhead of the attack, likewise Abbass is about to come for some serious hammer. No doubt he’s gonna pick up a wicket or two with the new ball but when the wicket is flat later in the innings and the seam less pronounced he’s simply a container rather than a wicket taker.

My concern is we have all seen this before. You can’t have a medium pacer without a tight bowler/wicket taker at the other end. Amir is ok for now but when the third change comes on we are going to release pressure and leak runs through Rahat Ali. This not abbas’s fault but that the make of the attack has to give him the ability to continue to bowl tight and keep pressure on both ends.

In other words abbass in the middle overs is cannon fodder which the likes of cook and root see on an almost daily level on the county circuit.

For once I’m wishing Wahab was in the side instead of rahat and then it is as close to oval of 2010 as we can get.

So lords is flattening out as predicted and abbass’s 80mph bowling isn’t going to trouble anybody as the seam movement disappears. Already we’ve seen the ball on occasion bounce twice to Sarfaraz

Time to appreciate Mohammad Abbas

People here have always expressed doubts about him.For some he was a domestic bully, for others another one from the trundler factory.

Fact is,he averages 17,with 36 wickets in 7 matches so far.

Much better bowler then Amir.

Wish this guy got his 5ver

This guy has been playing in domestic for many years yet he was ignored by selectors

Good replacement for Asif. Might not be as good or poetic but he pitches the balll in the right areas consistently.

Great find.

but if we go by Junaids logic then this isn't a special bowling performance because Abbas is playing against a batting line up which is out of form........

Pakistanis unfortunately have a history of pointlessly criticizing players who dont 'look' good i/e Abbas, Sarfraz, Sadaf, azhar etc.

Wish our thinking as nation changes and we start appreciating people on the value they bring and their roles. :)

I thought he was just a green track bully but he isn’t. He’s here to stay.

Ideal bowler for English conditions. Will be crucial to our chances in this series.

I've been appreciating him since I first saw in West Indies.

I knew this guys was gonna be very successful.

He is the leader of the attack and goes to show that you have to reward performers in FC ... Imagine if Sadaf and Mir Hamza get their chances too ... We don't need Amir in tests.

Waiting for certain poster to come here and say "I don't care about wickets he's a trundler"

People were saying he shouldn't play in England because he's too slow... These people seriously lack knowledge.

I knew he'd do well.

Of course now everyone will say they knew Abbas was gonna be a great bowler

He’s not a great bowler. He’s a very handy medium pacer. They stifle and strangulate and somehow this very rookie attack has managed to get reverse swing going.

This has only been possible because fahim has stepped up, amir is fit and hasan has replaced rahat.

If there was only one weakness it was Rahat.

I think Abbas is excellent against the tail. I've noticed this a few times now but the oppositions tails don't seem to last too long against Abbas.

Bowls at 80-85 mph, but has been a constant menace.

He is the closest thing we have to Asif. We really are spoiled for choices when it comes to fast bowling. To think people like Shinwari and Junaid aren't even good enough to be in the squad.

He has looked even more impressive after his county stint. To me he appears to be Pakistan's Vernon Philander.

We really are.

Muhammad Abbas
Muhammad Amir
Hasan Ali
Junaid Khan
Wahab Riaz
Shaheen Afridi
Rumman Raees
Usman Khan Shinwari

are some top quality fast bowlers. Now all we need to do is to decide which one of them is good for the long format and which one of them is for the shorter formats.

I would split it as:

Tests: Abbas, Wahab and Shaheen with Amir and Hasan to play occasionally i.e. ENG/SA/AUS/NZ tours
LOIs: Amir, Junaid, Hasan, Rumman, Shinwari

Add to the pacers, we have Shadab and Fahim two very good alrounders. I doubt any other nation can boast of this many bowling options and variety.

Rumman isn't a test bowler. Wahab is slowly becoming a TTF. How many more matches do you need to believe that.

Abbas, Amir, Hassan, Shaheen, Junaid and Shinwari should be your top 6 bowler.

Still a team like India is top on the ranking charts but but but Pakistan on the other hand, let me see, languishing somewhere at the bottom despite being spoiled for choices :shh:41::23:

Abbas bowled good today and he can be appreciated without taking a dig at India.

Did you even read my post? I put Rumman under LOI specialists and Wahab under Tests specialists.

Is he underbowled with the old ball? Has only bowled 12 overs so far in the second innings. Looks like the team management also think he is exclusively a new ball bowler.
