How has the world changed since 9/11?

was such a huge cultural paradigm shift, everyone has mentioned the obvious after effects, but 9/11 pushed pak into religious fanaticism. pakistan of the 90s was a very cool place with a multitude of vibrant sub cultures. as the internet and social media homogenised global culture, 9/11 and the islamic shift which followed made intolerance and group think the dominant monoculture, killing most sub cultures for a decade, if not more. pakistan has only really started recovering somewhat recently.

I don’t live in pakistan but I do hear similar thoughts from people there on how the country took the turn towards extremism after 9/11. I don’t think the west understands how alienating all Muslims through invasion of their lands has actually helped the extremists in their cause. The reality of it has not sunk yet.

Do not think they cared much regarding that fact.

Within those lands, sure they wont. but now its spilling over everywhere and I am sure they do care about that. They tried to go scorched earth and eventually had to run from their efforts to "free and democratize" those lands. I think somewhere someone sitting up there who did not profit from the oil business is thinking "was this all really worth it?"

it did massively, minorities fled pakistan en mass in the early 2000s. pakistans middle class christians, and business class parsis all left. who are left are mostly those too poor to get away. even as a cricket fan it was common to see non-muslim names in domestic teams, i think the last one i can remember is lal kumar, who played a fc match ten years ago.

having interacted with a lot of pakistanis i can feel the change now tho, theres a growing class of more tolerant and open minded people.
