How important is batting depth these days?

It is almost like this has been a deciding factor somewhat in some of the results. You run through top order. Then a no.8 or no.9 put his hand up either by scoring runs or giving company to a top order. And it completely changes the complexion of the game. No team got impacted more by this than India in recent times. Sam Curran in particular completely altered the course of 2 tests. He did the same in Srilanka. Over here in the 2nd test Lyon, Pat cummins lasted long enough to put the game away for India. If there was going to be washout on day 5 , Pat cummins would have saved this test as well.

On the flip side how bad it is to have a poor tail. Again India takes the honor for having the worst tail. They just collapse like a deck of cards once they lost 6 wickets without being able to obtain crucial leads.

One thing is sure. Top/middle order is iffy for all the teams these days. That is why tailenders are making such a huge difference.

We have little tailender strength though Hasan Ali is capable when he engages his brain with the bat as he did batting with Babar in the 1st innings.

10 runs collectively is about the best we can expect from our tail.

Amir also used to be able to hang around for a bit, I still remember his partnership with YK during the Oval test match & his partnership with Shafiq during the d/n test match at The Gabba. But he seems to have regressed with the bat as well.

We have lost last few games (including tests and ODIs) due to lack of batting depth. Yasir used to score run 20 odd runs at number 8, and even that he aint scoring these days..

It always helps. India's 83 WC win was helped greatly by the fact that last 3 wickets added 53 runs out of 183 runs , the winning margin was 43 runs.

However i still consider these runs are bonus if a bowlers is great with ball.

Very important and on tricky pitches or when your batting fails it's all that more important. Don't know what has happened to our tail since the Australia tour. Wahab, Amir, Sohail Khan, Yasir all scored runs in that series and even in England our tail wagged. Nowadays our tail is pretty pathetic apart from Amir and Hasan when they apply themselves the rest of our bowlers can not bat.

Aus and England have very good tails and this helps change matches on tough pitches. You should not pick a bits and pieces player though. Pick somebody for his bowling- e.g Cummins and hope they can contribute with the bat.

SL's historic win in SA proved how tailenders can make a huge difference. In Both innings tail stood up against hostile bowling. They took the blows and survived.
