How long is your commute to work/uni/school on average? For those of you who take public transport, what do you do to keep yourself busy during the commute? It takes my about 1 hour 40 minutes to get from home to Uni here in Sydney and I usually watch TV shows on netflix or browse PP on my phone:hasan

25-30 minutes to my school.
Usually take metro, tram and bus omw to school.

Wow 1 hour 40 minutes trek is very long.

For me to get to University, my halls was very close to uni so 5 minute walk, next year I'll be living in a house that is also 5 minute walk to Uni.

I work as well, cricket umpiring evenings mondays-thursdays, I tend to get a bus there which is about 20-30 mins and I get a lift from parents on way back. Hopefully I can drive soon.

As for when I was at secondary school, I would get up at like 0645 to have breakfast etc, then walk about 1 minute to the bus stop and get a private bus to school (i.e. bus was just for my school) which would take about 30 minutes.

Good thread.

I knew a guy who had the following schedule:

Take 2 Subway Trains from Bellerose to Sunnyside. (1 and 1/2 hours)

Stay in School from 8 til 6 in the evening.

Take 2 Subway Trains from Sunnyside to Bellerose. (1 and 1/2 hours)

And he became the Saludictorian.

Insane guy.

Did have a bit of a Napoleon complex though. :uks

1.9 miles. 7 minutes from my dining table to my work desk.

5 minute drive. I'm fortunate cause most people here drive a lot, a 60-90 minute commute isn't unheard of.

1 hour 30 mins from Home to Uni. During rush hour

40 minutes by metro from home to uni in Melbourne CBD.

Same time by car.

I usually listen to music or browse YouTube.

Have to go to office these days..at some fancy place called wework where they offer free beer on tap. Takes me an hour where I have to tolerate two punjabi ladies who discuss everything related to bollywood, from what sonam kapoor was wearing at her wedding, to the latest fashion disaster, to what taimur, the son of a star bollywood couple is up to these days. and they insist on listening to atif aslam in the cab. By the time I reach my office, I am well abreast of everything bollywood and I hear sounds in my ear while I try to work. What did I do to deserve this punishment from God in this Holy Month?

If im running late and put the foot to the metal , I can make it into the work car park from my house in around 3mins and 40 seconds. :)

I remember the days of having a tiny commute. School was literally 5 minutes by walking. University life is tough just because of my hellish commute.

I hate my commute, 1 - 1.5 hours by bus depending on traffic. Alternatively I can take the ferry, which takes 1 hour in total.

Live in beautiful suburban New jersey town, no congestion, no traffic jam, takes me 9 minutes to work.

The downside to that is that you live in New Jersey

15 mins with traffic, 10 mins without traffic. I could chose to take the subway and that would take me 20 odd minutes. I only do that when we have several inches of snow otherwise I drive. Needless to say I live pretty close to my work. Sakun hai kafi.

5-minute walking distance but I take my car anyways because I just like to drive around the countryside when my shift ends.

Drown your sorrows in the taps man.

35 minutes walk. 54 minutes train. 6 minutes walk. 7 minutes subway. five minutes walk. and then repeat in reverse order at the end of the day.

Generally I don't mind but these days it gets a bit tiring.

Yes, the most expensive state to live in. But its beautiful, worth living and loving. Sandwiched between two great cities, beautiful beaches, best schools in the country , 4 seasons and many other pluses.

Seriously speaking though, I've felt I'm a lot more disciplined and am more on point with my time management when I've had 1+ hour commutes. You kind of have to structure your entire day around that, just so you can be at work/school on time.

With these halwa 5-10 mins commutes sometimes you get complacent. But am not complaining Alhamdullilah I like what I have.

I wouldn’t mind an hour-long commute if I weren’t driving. A train ride would give me an excuse to read or write. There’s an intimate, alone-in-a-crowd vibe to that. However, I would hate having to drive for that long. I imagine that would take its toll and be incredibly fatiguing.

My two mile commute allows me to eat lunch at home, and to ride the bike to and from work if the weather is friendly, so it certainly has its perks, but yes, it can make one complacent.

It used to me around 30 mins for me when I was working for a certain company but then I decided to become an entrepreneur of sorts and form my own group and because we are a small company, the opportunities are less so currently driving an hour each way to work and have been doing this for the last 2.5 years now.

Hopefully, things will change as we expand to areas close to my house and my commute will shorten but it is what it is. I make more money and enjoy more control being part of leadership and senior management but have to compromise more time commuting. I've learned to live with it. I've grown fond of listening to several interesting podcasts and recently have gotten SiriusXM subscription which came with my new car so time goes by smoothly fiddling through 100 or so channels. I tried to listen to audiobooks while driving but was unable to focus intently as my OCD mind wanders on and then I am left rewinding the part I lost interest at and on and on, its just not worth it. At least with most podcasts, its mostly conversations or short easy listening pieces when can get engrossed in but not requiring sustained concentrations.

No Desi has ever praised Jersey that much except the ones living there.

I actually love driving early morning because I live in a college town so driving outside of it is pretty much on freeways, no morning traffic rush. Just blasting music full volume and driving, it's kind of calming.

I also have a bad habit of eating out even though my house is 5 mins from work and I could easily go home to eat, but that new Taco Bell naked chicken chalupa is not going to order itself..

I hate driving at night though because my car's headlights are horrible and this state has some very shady looking roads at night.

I have the same issue with catching up with lecture recordings on the train. The OCD kicks in if I don't understand some bits of the lecture and I keep on rewinding it to understand the content but it honestly never works. Have given up on doing any form of productive work on the train.
