I'm 27 years old, and I've been an asthma patient all my life. Trust me, I wouldn't want my worst enemy suffer from asthma. It's a genetic thing. My mother's family line has quite a few asthma patients, it runs in my family. Unfortunately I too inherited it. in fact my grandfather passed away from asthma problems. He too suffered it from it from birth like me.

It's the worst thing one can be cursed with. As I'm typing this, I'm going through another asthma attack. Can you imagine what a person will go through if he struggles from breathing adequately? Right now I'm under antibiotics. it generally takes around 15 days for me to completely recover from an asthma attack, maybe even more.

How many of you suffer from any such chronic disease?

I have asthma, its pretty well controlled through my Inhalers though. Preventer and reliever...one puff in morning and one just before bed, flares up here and there, mostly if i have cold or flu. Alhamdulillah does not restrict me in any way from daily tasks.

Sorry to hear about your disease. By the way is it forever? I mean my cousins had this problem in their childhood but they are fine now after proper treatment.

A member of my family did.

Got rid of all carpets in the house, and replaced it with wood flooring. Made a tremendous difference. Asthma attacks are usually caused as a result of dustmites. They feed off dead skin cells that each of us sheds every day, along with pollen grains, insect scales, dead mites and even its own droppings.

Dust mite droppings can become airborne and are so small that they can flow deep into your airways each time you take a breath. These inhaled droppings, rather than the mite itself, can then cause asthma in sensitive people by means of an allergic reaction, leading to the typical asthma symptoms of wheeze, tightness in the chest, coughing and difficulty breathing.

Vacuming carpets does not get rid of dust mites as they have the ability to cling onto the fibres of the carpets. Modern homes, with their airconditioning systems and central heating form the perfect environments for them to survive.

Apparently it can ease off in one's late teens and early twnties, and come back with a vengence later on in life. Staying healthy and fit, along with also avoiding house-dust, is one of the best means of keeping the affects of asthma to a minimum.

To answer your question, no, it never goes away completely.

Having said that, if properly controlled, it should'nt adversely affect your life. Both Shoaib Akhtar and Paul Scholes suffer from asthma, it did'nt stop them from becoming world renowned sportstars.

My dad had Asthma and till today, he suffers from it from time to time. I am not sure if I have it, but I do get this wheezing sometimes and I struggle to breathe whenever I touch something that has a lot of fine settled dust on it (like old clothes, books etc).

I observed this when I was about 12 and suffered from it until I was 21. Went to Doctor once and he said it was Bronchitis. But to me, it looked like an allergic reaction to dust mites. I used to be fine as long as I stayed away from dust.

Then at 21, I moved to USA and since then I am fine. I mildly struggle again whenever I visit India.

I guess as someone mentioned above, its the dust mites that was triggering mine. But I never suffered as acutely as my dad does. Mine used to stay any where between 1-5 days and it wasn't really bad. Just some heavy breathing. When my dad gets it, he suffers for over 2 weeks after medication.

I recently came to know that I have hypothyroidism too (thanks to my Mom). Somethings are hereditary. No way to escape them.

It used to be quite troublesome when I was younger.
These days, though it is not gone, I have it well controlled.

However, it can be vicious.

psoriasis on scalp and arms. Comes and goes, but its a pain to live with.

I have it in my scalp. It becomes severe in winter and then disappears sometimes for weeks.

Do you use any special shampoos?

Coal tar shampoo lately. But its a hassle to use because you have to let it sink in for a few minutes and then repeat. So I don't use it regularly. Worst thing about this condition, for me at least is that hair gel/wax really exacerbates it. And without using gel/wax I look like a hobo.:amin So its a catch 22.

Do ADHD/mysterious, inexplicable knee pain for six years count? It's nowhere near as bad as some of the other people on this thread though - I'd take ADHD over asthma any day. Weirdly, the predominantly inattentive and predominantly hyperactive forms coexist side by side and at any given time, one is more active which is strange/unusual since most people tend to have one dominant condition(hyperactive or inattentive), almost never both.

even if you use a vacuum cleaner which is certified Asthma and Allergy Friendly?

Yes. You can never get rid of dust-mites completely.

Bearing in mind that dust mite droppings can become airborne and are so small that they can flow deep into your airways each time you take a breath, here are some facts that might be of interest:

Dust mites thrive in warm, humid environments, eating dead skin cells and nesting in dust-collecting carpet. The residue that mites leave behind can mix with dust and become airborne, which may cause allergies.

...

Microbiologists have identified air blown from a running vacuum cleaner as one of the five places in the home that has the highest numbers of germs.

....

Bed bugs can live in carpet fibers and wooden floorboards. For their size, they are extremely fast and can crawl more than 100 feet to obtain a blood meal, usually at night from people who are sleeping. Engorgement takes about three to 10 minutes yet people rarely realize they are being bitten.

.....

A person sheds about 1.5 million skin flakes an hour, most of which becomes embedded in our carpets. (ie food for the dust-mites)

.....

Wall-to-wall carpeting is less healthy than smaller rugs because wall-to-wall carpets tend to be more permanent and harder-to-clean endpoints for moisture, chemicals, liquids, crumbs, and other spills that provide molds, mildew, yeasts, and bacteria (such as e-coli) with a rich and nearly continuous supply of nutrients.

I also suffer from eczema pretty much all over all though its a lot better compared to when I was a kid . Recently the eczema has started to effect the scalp but I keep it under control most of the time .

Used to have asthma when I was really young. I remember being taken to the hospital every now and then, sometimes in the middle of the night, and hooked on to to the oxygen masks for a few hours. Also got the carpets removed and we lived in completely tiled/marble floored homes after that.

I haven't had asthma in a very long time though, Alhamdulilah.

My mother's uncle suffered from blood and bone cancer simultaneously. He didn't even smoke, drink or take drugs. Was always fit and kept himself in shape by taking long walks even at the age of 70. But to see him waste away bit by bit was quite horrific. He looked like a hollow skeleton towards his final days. Thankfully, his misery was over soon.

The form of asthma I suffer is so severe, it usually requires hospitalization. In fact for 3 straight years, my severe asthma developed into pneumonia (2005, 2006, 2007). I still haven't recovered from the asthma attack I suffered some 10 days back.

Are you suffering from any disease?

I am suffering from Asthma and Epilepsy since child hood.

Hypothyroidism.

Nothing serious, but it can cause symptoms sometimes which can worry you. Whenever my TSH hormone level is out of range, I experience strange sensation in left hand, tips of fingers and sometimes in right hand too.

For the past couple of months, I am going through this again.

Getting old is not fun. All the inherited family diseases slowly start to show up once you cross mid 30's.

May everyone have relief from whatever test you are having.

My test is high cholesterol. As one age, I guess it is normal with the life style we have.

As a teenager, my fingers used to swell in winter, specially when it snowed. The season brings more pain, I also get the most horrible muscle cramps that sometimes last for more than 15 minutes.

I am suffering from Asthma and Epilepsy since child hood.
I wish & pray that your Epilepsy fades away soon. InshaAllah

Will pray especially for you in Ramazan.

May Allah give you health. Aameen.

Whereas Ashthma is more of a manageable disease.

There's apparently a cure for epilepsy these days here in the US. While it has primarily been tested on young kids suffering from the disease there are some older individuals who have also found some cure.

The issue is it is a cannabis related therapy...that requires individuals to take drops of cannabis related oil (not sure of the exact name) around 3 to 4 times a day. Some people have claimed it completely eradicated their kids seizures (one parent I know personally). There are tons of stories online and even videos on Youtube.

Biggest problem with this therapy is that cannabis and all forms are marijuana are illegal federally in the US. There is a rise in the use of medical marijuana in many states including the one I live in and only medical use has been legalized so far. While states like Colorado, Washington, Oregon and few others have legalized both recreation and medical use.

This specific treatment is obviously not approved by the Government or any authority but is gaining a lot of traction in the private industry where people are willing to be experiment with it for the sake of improving their childs life.

Just thought I would share since I've seen 2 to 3 year old's get seizures in front of my eyes and it was the most heart breaking thing ever.

Hope your condition improves.

Alhamdoulillah I have no illness.
#GreenRoars has it. I was responding him.

My Cousin in Pakistan suffered from Epilepsy for 15 years and than alhamdoulillah he became fully cured from it and it's been 13 years since than and He hasn't experienced any symptoms.

Yes I am aware of the ongoing research as I myself am a Student of Molecular Medicine.

No chronic disease as such...but had an almost full length tear in the posterior ligament of my right knee. I had to stop playing cricket due to that & it still pains at times.

sorry, didn't realize it was for GreenRoars. Just wanted to share since I know someone personally who used it and it apparently worked. I think the research is primarily focused on kids rather than adults but at least there is some cure for someone out there. And since you're a medical student I'm sure your knowledge is more than mine.

take care

Hypothyroidism. I identified this 7 years ago when I was getting horrific trapped wind which would last for days and immobilise me with sharp pain.

Although I take thyroxine daily and now have enough hormone to digest my food, I still put on weight quite easily. And on the rare occasion where I miss my medication before leaving for work, I get nasty symptoms by the early afternoon like tunnel vision, super-fatigue and agoraphobia. There are a couple of occasions where I have had to make up an excuse to leave the office early due to the sheer discomfort, terror and exhaustion being experienced. Probably some kind of withdrawal symptom from not taking the drug at the usual time.

I also suffer from anxiety, which is more of an affliction than a disease, and it seems better than it was when I first started suffering from it - a massive panic attack daily, convinced that I was about to lose my job and my family and die! - but even in its milder form, anxiety still sucks.

Hyperthyroidism

Well I was searching for a thread related to hyperthyroidism and found this one.

I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism almost five months ago. I want to know how people cope with it. If you have/had this issue, can you please share your experience? How was it diagnosed? For how much time you had to take medicines? Did you recover fully? How it effected your life? In other words, I need motivation!

Sounds really tough, man. I hope you've gotten through it completely now. Some people don't take anxiety, depression or even OCD seriously but I truly understand how tough it must be for you. It further aggravates and leads to problems like insomnia and tumors in the brain so anxiety is no joke. Hopefully you will get through this and are completely rid off all such fears.

Muscle twitching and weakness - year+
Family's been hit by Anxiety for years. Can't stay out for more than hours or else they're lose it. They are afraid of going out.

I think there is a cure for most forms of illness. You guy's on this thread who suffer from something considered chronic should contact your nearest Chinese herbal clinic for a check up. They can help you in ways that mainstream medicine simply does not by giving you many forms of herbal tea though being private it will cost. I was told some years back white cells in my blood were not being developed like they should making me feel so very weak all the time. Casually walked in to a Chinese clinic for opinion coming back with herbal that I have been taking for a few years now. By the grace of Allah my cells are back to normal as to is my energy. The Prophet of Islam(saw) did not say "seek knowledge from China" for no reason. These guys are good, real good. Give them a try.

No chronic disease but my right ear is constantly ringing from last 2 years after I had cold. It doesn't amount to hearing loss or anything but it is irritating and sometimes I can't sleep due to it. Docs I have consulted said it is a mental state called tinnitus, not a disease.

l5-s1 degenerative spondolysis and other issues with same area.
Feeling a lot better than yesteryear. But afraid to do any physical work or take part in sports.

Have got way better from anxiety now. Not perfect but about 85-90% better. Last year was very tough.
