I had this debate with a friend of mine a few days ago. And it really had me thinking. Honestly speaking, and leaving all ego aside, I believe that Sachin, Sunny, Dravid, Sehwag and Kohli are the only Indian cricketers who could have made it to every other team during their time. Sehwag could have been poor in some countries but the way he used to butcher bowlers for fun would have definitely earned him a spot in other team during their time.

But one thing here, if you keep your ego intact while naming your players, it won't make much sense. I could have named other brilliant players from India like Kapil Dev, Sourav Ganguly, Mohindar Amarnath, Polly Umrigar. But then again I know it well and clear that they wouldn't have made it to every other team during their time.

Let's keep our egos aside and really think about the topic for sometime.

Laxman's competitors were:
Aus-damien martyn
SA-ashwell prince
Eng-paul collingwood/bell
In all other teams he would have easily entered.
As for these 3,i think laxman was better than bell, prince but damien martyn gives tough competition.
What do you think? Was there any other competitor ?

Wait for Junaids and Robert to show up here and scoff at you ... in their opinion (Which they claim to be "fact" ) these players wouldnt even qualify for net practice in the Grand old days of the 1980s ... just you wait and watch :))

Quite a few since re-admission now that I think about it: Kallis, Smith, AB, Steyn, Donald, Rhodes

The maybes: Amla, Gibbs, Shaun Pollock

Kallis - No doubt

Smith - I think, yes.

AB - No doubt

Steyn - No doubt

Donald - Yes. BTW, He has always been my favorite fast bowler ever.

Jhonty - Used to be one of my favorites during his time. But I don't think he would have made it to every other team during his time, because his batting wasn't really great.

Amla - Extremely good player, and would have probably made it to any other team during his time.

Gibbs - Yes, he would have.

Pollock - Undoubtedly, yes

Imran, Wasim, Waqar, Miandad, Younis, Inzamam, Anwar, Akhtar, Yousuf, Ajmal and Qadir.

In LOIs only, Abbas, Saqlain, Afridi, Gul and Razzaq.

At their best, each of these guys would have walked into any team in the world.

Laxman would probably get into the Pakistan side of his time if they wanted a specialist batsman at #6.

Oh yes, i forgot abdul razzaq.
Pakistan had a really strong batting order at that time,(probably their best ever).

That team had a great core (Younis, Yousuf, Inzamam) but horrible openers (Farhat, Taufeeq, a young Hafeez, Kamran).

Imran, Wasim, and Waqar are the only ones I can think of who would indisputably have made into every other team at their respective peaks.

Ajmal would have been thrown out of Australia if he ever tried to bowl with that action.

Sunny Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, Vengsarkar, Md Azharuddin, Javagal Srinath, Sachin Tendulkar, Dravid, Ganguly, Laxman, Sehwag, Anil Kumble, Zaheer Khan, Gambhir, Irfan Pathan, Kohli, Bumrah, Md Shami.

England as well.

I don't know about England, they are usually less scrupulous about actions. After all, they did allow him leeway to play for Worcestershire. I am sure they would have turned a blind eye if he was winning matches for them.

Not sure whether Shakib would make it to every team of his time, but I'm confident he would made it to a lot of teams.

Apart from T20Is he should be able to get into most sides. Test batting average of 40 and bowling average of 32 while a ODI batting average of 36 and bowling average of 29 will get him into any side.

During his playing days he had competition with the likes of Watson Kallis with the latter being overall a superior player mainly because of his batting. But AUS SA would pick him Shakib in a heartbeat

Tbh quality of allrounders have gone down. Heck quality of cricket has gone down

I can remember they were worried about Moen Ali bowling the doosra when he made test debut. So I think he would got a harsh treatment in England.

No, he would have been reported, cleared and gone on to have a similarly wonderful career.

If you are being serious, I'd suggest reading up on Australia's history on its treatment of bowlers suspected of being chuckers, let alone proven. Ajmal won't have been selected by a state team owing to the stigma associated with suspect actions. There is no chance in hell that Ajmal would have been capped by Australia.

In any event, even if we ignore the action, an off-spinner like Ajmal would have struggled on Australian wickets as he doesn't rely on overspin and bounce to get wickets. The one test he did play for Pakistan in 09-10, he was thrashed around the MCG. His ODI record in Australia wasn't much cop either.

From India
Sachin Tendulkar
Rahul Dravid
Sunil Gavaskar
Virender Sehwag
Yuvraj Singh ( at his peak)
Mahendra Singh Dhoni
Virat Kohli
Anil Kumble
Ravichandran Ashwin

From India
Sachin Tendulkar - Yup.
Rahul Dravid - Yup.
Sunil Gavaskar - Yup.
Virender Sehwag - Yup.
Yuvraj Singh ( at his peak) - Yuvraj in Tests? :))
Mahendra Singh Dhoni - Doubtful in Tests.
Virat Kohli - Sure.
Anil Kumble - Would not have made it in Australia.
Ravichandran Ashwin - Not sure.

Answers above.

Batsmen: Gavaskar, Tendulkar and Kohli are the only sure shot from India. Dhoni at his prime also has a very strong case - and probably would have walked into any LOI team of the world. Another person who had a strong case for being selected into any team for a brief period (2002-2005) is probably Dravid, especially in Tests.

Bowlers: Prasanna and Bedi were some of the greatest spinners ever but how much importance was given to spin then is doubtful. Ashwin would be picked up by any team touring India and would have been dropped for home games. Which is why he is doubtful.
