Will be grateful if someone can provide tips on how to get a good private health insurance plan in Canada

One of my biggest mistakes i made was not to get it when i first landed in 2012. At the time i never had any serious health issues and had been pretty healthy fit for a long while.

Unfortunately in the last few years i have had a severe back problem and have also had a few dental problems and the problem with relying on OHIP is that they don't cover dental and it takes ages to get appointments.

Also unfortunately most of the employers that i have worked for do not offer private health insurance to their employees.

I tried to apply to one of the big insurance companies offering private health insurance in 2017 but i unfortunately applied when i really needed it and had a few medical conditions. When you apply to these big insurance companies, they ask you to fill out a full detailed questionnaire and ask for your complete medical history.

You have no choice but to be honest in your application because if they find out later on that you lied on your application about your medical history, the insurance companies can not only sue and file criminal charges against you but can also demand a reimbursement of all the expenses they have paid on your behalf.

Unfortunately i got declined as a result of the medical issues i was facing and during the process of shopping around for private health insurance, the common feedback i got from a few insurance agents was that once i have a refusal on my record, i have no chance of ever getting private health insurance in Canada again and that i have no choice but to suck it up and pay out of pocket.

I thought i would ask PPer's in Canada whether this is true or not or are there ways to get around this?

This is messed up. In America we have the same problem but after Obamacare it is now illegal for insurance companies to deny coverage to people because of pre-existing conditions.
