They played a pivotal role - how will people of Pakistan judge them? Saviours of Pakistan or turncoats? Will MQM lose their hold in Karachi due to this?

KARACHI: After the Supreme Court (SC) verdict came in, Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) Quaid Nawaz Sharif has telephoned Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan (MQM-P) convener Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, citing sources, ARY News reported on Thursday.

Sources told ARY News that Nawaz Sharif has made a telephonic conversation with MQM-P convener Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui after the SC verdict declaring the National Assembly (NA) deputy speaker’s ruling unconstitutional.

Nawaz Sharif congratulated Siddiqui over the top court’s verdict and said that the SC ruling was the victory of the Constitution in which MQM played an important role.

Sharif expressed aims to further strengthen working relationship with MQM-P leadership in future.

Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui said that his political party will always back the Constitution and assured MQM-P’s firm support to the opposition. He assured that MQM-P lawmakers will participate in the voting on the no-trust motion against Prime Minister Imran khan on April 9.

The MQM convener termed the SC ruling as a victory of the democracy.

Hopefully MQM wont win one seat in Karachi. However I dont blame them for leaving. PTI's govt was going to fall anyway thanks to the lota's in his own party.

The nation will remember them for this great service. All their past crimes are forgiven.

I feel the demands will not be met by PPP at the end

Zardari is an excellent politician and negotiator. He even took the PTI dissidents with him in the meetings with MQM to tell them if you side with PTI, you will end up on the losing side and won't get anything so better to side with us and get whatever you can.

Corrupt induviduals, replacing corrupt induviduals.

Pakistan is a nation doomed to fail, because the population is heavily brainwashed. Only a matter of decades or even years, already is a Chinese puppet state.

Most likely will end uo being 3 different countries. These no pakistani identity, either your punjabi, karachiate, balouchi, sindhi.. etc...

Pakistan has failed to create a national culture, has failed to assimilate the sindhi, afghani, pashtun people. Even the mahajars like you guys call them...

Enjoy what you got, and try to get the hell out

The people of Karachi hate PPP. How will MQM explain their support of PPP in the next elections? I think IK's narrative of all thieves coming together will have a stronger pull than any MQM/PPP alliance in Karachi at least.

Been put in their place by the Sharifs....

No mention in their speech today - expect MQM to walk out again.

It's par for the course from MQM, lost count of how many times they've joined and left coalition governments.

Corrupt induviduals, replacing corrupt induviduals.

I would argue the bigger problem is a burgeoning and uneducated population more than a brainwashed population (although extremism is a massive issue). Pakistan's weak, import-driven economy with its lack of profitable industries simply cannot sustain the needs of 220m (and counting) people, and drives away investors with constant political turmoil, a corrupt bureaucracy and security fears.

Mqm are cry babies. That was such a stupid thing to cry about. They really are the worst party

Anyways, i think mqm are being used. If pti doesnt pull off seats in the by elections and ppp or pmln win enough seats. Mqm would be thrown out of the coalition by zardari.

Than mqm would not be in either pdm or pti :)).

Cant wait for this to happen

Their reputation in KHI is at an all time low. Even local low level MQM workers were flaborgasted by their decision to side with PPP and if they get nothing for their support then the senior MQM leadership is in trouble.

I think for the first time in history MQM stood up for something and actually made a move that supported the greater good instead of always being a coalition partner of the government.

Bhai they did not do this for the greater good. PTI govt was going to fall because of the lota's, so they saw the writing on the wall and left. All they care about is being in government. I really regret supporting these thugs at one point in my life.

The system is flawed when a pathetic group like MQM can be such a big player in every election.

The system is flawed when a pathetic group like MQM can be such a big player in every election.

Their time is coming to an end. I dont think they will win one seat in Karachi next election. As long as the election is fair, and the neutrals stay neutral. Majority of people in Karachi hate PPP, they basically have aligned with the devil in their eyes.

MQM had got promises of new accurate census from PTI and seat demarcations the biggest chance they had of weakening PPP control over Sind and through it Karachi they sold that opportunity. Any karachiete Pro Pti or anti pti will be angry at them for this and they have further eroded the support they had among the urdu speaking community.

KARACHI: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has sought Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan (MQM-P) support in the National Assembly (NA) speaker election, citing sources, ARY News reported on Wednesday.

PM Shehbaz Sharif held a meeting with MQM-P leaders during his visit to Karachi. The meeting was attended by Amir Khan, Aminul Haque, Farogh Naseem, Nasreen Jalil and others.

Sources told ARY News that PM Sharif thanked MQM-P for supporting the opposition parties in the no-trust motion against the former premier. PM Sharif has individually thanked the lawmakers who cast their votes in the NA.

He vowed that the promises made with the MQM-P leaders will be fulfilled. He urged coordinated efforts between the Centre and the province for the development of Sindh province.

Muttahida Qaumi Movement - Pakistan (MQM-P), a coalition party of the new federal government appears to have reiterated its position on the political spectrum with the rejection of the new constituencies formed per the 2017 census.

It should be noted that data from the 2017 census had left a sour taste in the mouths of MQM Pakistan and the ruling Sindh government. The biggest objection in the case had been in regard to Karachi’s population, which they alleged had been severely underrepresented in the numbers.

Whereas, the previous Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government, unbeknownst to its fate, had announced a new census in the country this year. Work on the census is still going on despite the political upheaval in the country. This, much to the dismay of MQM-P, also includes the formation of new constituencies based on the 2017 census, which the party has protested.

However, the Election Commission of Pakistan, undeterred by MQM-P’s grievances, has also decided to go ahead with the plan. According to the schedule, the new constituencies are expected to be finalised by the Election Commission by August 3 of this year.

At the official level, it is being said that constituencies are being drawn on the basis of the 2017 census in view of the upcoming general elections that are just around the corner. According to MQM Pakistan leader and Sindh Assembly member Muhammad Hussain, the term of the new general election is almost one-and-a-half years away, that’s why work on new constituencies needs to start so soon. He said that MQM-P never recognised the results of the 2017 census. “The previous government had decided to hold a new census this year at the behest of the MQM while the MQM has also reached a written agreement with the current government for a new census. This is why constituencies should be based on the new census, rather than relying on the contested data from 2017,” he expressed, adding that they have not dropped the matter and that his party plans to formally take up the issue with Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif.

On the other hand, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader from Karachi Waqar Mehdi revealed that the Sindh Chief Minister had written a letter to former Prime Minister Imran Khan on the issue of the 2017 census and expressed his serious concerns over it. “However, the 2017 census was officially notified after the approval of the Council of Common Interests, that is why new constituencies are being formed on this basis. Meanwhile, work is underway at the government level to conduct a new census in the country. In this regard, the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, NADRA, and other federal agencies are engaged in preparations,” he told.

Commenting on the matter, Pakistan Bureau of Statistics spokesperson Atiq-ur-Rehman said that it is for the first time that a digital census is being conducted in the country, which he believes will streamline the process. “Over 120,000 tablets would be provided to enumerators who would record the data in the central software at the same time. The new census is scheduled to be completed in December this year, but it could be delayed by a month or two,” he told The Express Tribune.

Black sheep definitely they always are self centred hopefully they have no future the turncoat of Pakistan politics

The Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM), a coalition party of the newly-elected government, has sent proposals to Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif for governorship of Sindh.

The post became vacant when Imran Ismail resigned in the aftermath of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) ouster from power through the vote of no-confidence.

The former governor sent his resignation to President Arif Alvi hours before Shehbaz took the oath as the prime minister. The president accepted his resignation nearly a week later.

In the absence of a sitting governor, Sindh Assembly Speaker Agha Siraj Durrani is currently handling additional responsibilities.

Reportedly, the names of Waseem Akhtar, Amir Khan, Kishwar Zehra, Nasreen Jaleel and Amir Chishti have been forwarded to the prime minister by the MQM-P.

Express News reported that the names of Javed Hanif and Ahmed Chennai are also under consideration for the coveted post.

The names were sent unanimously after consulting each member of the Coordinating Committee, however, the party is open to review if objections are raised.

On the other hand, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), another key coalition party, has nominated Makhdoom Ahmed Mehmood for the governorship of Punjab. The PPP leader has previously served as the province’s governor.

It is worth mentioning here that PM Shehbaz sent the second summary for incumbent Punjab Governor Omar Sarfraz Cheema’s removal from the post as the latter first refused to administer oath to chief minister-elect Hamza Shehbaz and then the new provincial cabinet.

Moreover, the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) has demanded the governorship of either Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) or Balochistan.

Shehbaz nominates MQM-P's Jalil as Sindh governor
Premier accepts resignation of Wapda chairman Muzzamil Hussain

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday forwarded a summary to President Arif Alvi for the appointment of Mutahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) leader Nasreen Jalil as the governor of Sindh.

The appointment of Jalil came days after the MQM-P's Coordination Committee shared with Shehbaz a list of five names, including Jalil's, for the governorship.

The Sindh governor's post had become vacant when Imran Ismail resigned in the aftermath of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) ouster from power through a vote of no-confidence.

The former governor had sent his resignation to President Alvi hours before Shehbaz took oath as the prime minister of Pakistan. The president had accepted his resignation nearly a week later.

In the absence of a sitting governor, Sindh Assembly Speaker Agha Siraj Durrani is currently handling additional responsibilities.

Wapda chief's resignation accepted

The prime minister also accepted the resignations of Lt Gen Muzzamil Hussain, the chairman of Water & Power Development Authority (Wapda), who had decided to step down from the post a day earlier over "personal reasons".

He was first appointed as Wapda chairman on August 24, 2016, by the then-government of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), and then offered a second-successive term of five years in August 2021 during the PTI’s tenure.

MQM can enjoy the perks of governorship for few months but they will pay the price in coming election. Even their own supporters are not happy with their getting in bed with Sindh PPP and Zardai. No one knows better than MQM voters about how bad the PPP leadership in Sindh has been to people in urban Sindh and MQM.

PTI leaders criticizes move to appoint Nasrin Jalil as Governor Sindh

PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry, Imran Ismail and Farrukh Habib have criticized the move to appoint Jalil to the position.

They said Jalil wrote a letter in 2015 to the Indian high commissioner to Pakistan and sought his help for her party in Karachi.

Former Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry said Nasreen Jalil wrote a letter on June 18, 2015 to the Indian high commission seeking help against Pakistan’s law enforcement agencies.

“The mess cleaned by the security institutions is being brought back,” tweeted Chaudhry.

Former Sindh Governor Imran Ismail, in a tweet, said being on bail or expertise in attacking the state institutions are the only qualities required to be a part of the incumbent government.

MQM-P leader Faisal Subzwari replied to Ismail’s tweet saying former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his party members realize these things once they are out of the power.

“Does a letter sent to all the embassies present in Pakistan and to the president, prime minister, army chief and chief justice proves anyone [to be] an Indian agent?” tweeted Subzwari.

PTI’s Farrukh Habib also criticized the government over the appointment, saying Jalil wrote a letter to the Indian high commissioner seeking his help.

Who is Nasreen Jalil
Jalil was born in Lahore in 1944. Her father Zafarul Ahsan was an Indian Civil Service (ICS) officer who was working as Lahore’s Deputy High Commissioner of Lahore at the time of partition.

Jalil has been a MQM-P (then Muttahida Qoumi Movement) member since she joined politics in 1988. She was twice elected as senator, first in 1994, then in 2012 on MQM-P’s ticket.

She served as chairperson of the Senate Standing Committee on Human Rights in 1994 and 2012.

In 2005, she was elected to the City Council Karachi and became Deputy Mayor of Karachi. She served at this position till 2010.

Jalil would be Sindh’s second female governor after and Begum Raana Liaquat Ali Khan who served at the position from 1973 to 1976.

New Punjab governor
Like Sindh, Punjab is also set to get a new governor. On Saturday, PM Sharif sent the summary for the appointment of Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) leader Baligh-ur-Rehman as Punjab governor.

The incumbent PunjabGovernor Omer Sarfraz Cheema is on the way out as PM Sharif has resent the ‘advice’ for his removal to President Alvi. The advice would take effect by the next week under the constitution of Pakistan even if the president does not approve it.

PTI vs MQM spat gets serious .....

KARACHI: After the coalition government made its long-awaited pick for the Sindh governor, the PTI criticised the selection of MQM-P's nominee for the slot, Nasreen Jalil and it lead to a war of words between the two parties on social media.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday sent the summary to appoint Jalil as the Sindh governor to President Arif Alvi. Her appointment to the slot would make her the third female governor in the history of Pakistan.

The criticism over picking her was initiated by a tweet from former federal minister Fawad Chaudhry, saying that the “crime minister” has proposed the name of Nasreen Jalil as Sindh governor.

Fawad claimed that Jalil had written to the Indian high commissioner on June 18, 2015, for "help" against Pakistan’s law enforcement agencies.

“It is unfortunate that the mess once cleared by security agencies from Karachi is coming back.”

The PTI leader also attached a copy of the letter in his tweet.

FSOdkcnXwAAblgu

Meanwhile, former Sindh governor Imran Ismail slammed the incumbent government over the decision too.

He also attached the same letter and wrote: "It seems like in order to be a part of the government, one must either be on bail or be an expert in vicious attacks on security agencies."

MQM-P’s senior leader and Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Senator Faisal Subzwari snapped back at the criticism, claiming that the letter was sent to all embassies, the then prime minister, president, army chief and the chief justice of Pakistan.

"Does this [letter] prove one as an 'Indian agent'?" he asked.

He, however, admitted that it was a mistake not to exclude the name of Indian diplomat from the list of recipients.

Retweeting Ismail's tweet, Sabzwari claimed that the letter had surfaced in 2015 and its contents were public, asking if the former prime minister Imran Khan and his associates came to know about this matter only after being removed from power.

He also censured Imran Khan for "torching electricity bills and calling for civil disobedience" in the past.

Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, while talking to ARY News program ‘Off the Record’, said that MQM-P has announced multiple times for being fully prepared for fresh elections.

“I have told the MQM-P’s stance regarding the elections while responding to a question of one of the journalists. By-elections are also beneficial for us as it will help our political party to get back our snatched seats.”

Siddiqui further said, “We will tell about who had snatched MQM-P’s seats when the democracy is independent here. How can you tell me that the democracy is independent here as there are some families who are ruling the country but not the common Pakistanis.”

He said that the economic uncertainty is increased due to the US dollar value and petrol price. The MQM-P convenor said that his political party suggested in increase the prices of the petroleum products in a manner which will not affect the poor people.

He suggested the federal government to take tough decisions in a careful manner. Regarding the fresh elections, Siddiqui said that the coalition parties will make a final decision regarding the new mandate.

Earlier, Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) proposed early general elections in the country after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif took the party’s Convener Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui into confidence over decisions made during PML-N huddle in London.

The MQM-P strictly opposed the idea of raising fuel prices with Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui saying that they had to sacrifice their politics for the sake of the interest of the state.

“We should prefer state’s interest rather than our politics in ongoing testing times,” the MQM-P leader said during the meeting and suggested that electoral reforms could be carried out during a week.

Former interior minister Sheikh Rasheed told Geo News on Tuesday that former Prime Minister Imran Khan was not expecting the no-trust motion until the last day.

On the Geo News Programme Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Saath Sheikh Rasheed stated that Imran Khan was confident until the last day of the no-trust motion's failure, but "I realised when Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan (MQM-P) and Baluchistan Awami Party (BAP) had parted ways from Imran Khan's government."

"When these two parties left the government, I realised that 'Baap' of the BAP is no longer with us, and I told Imran Khan that it's over, now pack up and go home," he added.

The former interior minister shed light on the country's current political situation, saying, "behind the curtain, there is much going on, but even if all the countries of the world stand behind Prime Minister Shehbaz, the fall of this coalition government is imminent because it is standing on one vote."

Sheikh Rasheed went on to say that because Pakistan is a nuclear power in a critical region of the world, it requires a national leader in times of crisis.

Sheikh Rasheed condemned the government's use of force against the PTI Azadi March, calling it a "barbaric act."

"Whatever happened on May 25, it was the worst form of tyranny and oppression because they [the government] used poisonous tear gas on protestors," he said, adding, "They unleashed a massacre on D-chowk, and the way police treated women, they should die of shame."

Dispelling rumours of resentment toward PTI chairman Imran Khan, the former minister stated, "I still have good relations with the Pakistan Army, but now I am standing with Imran Khan and paying the price for doing so."

The Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) spokesperson on Friday expressed concern over the increase in prices of petroleum products by Rs30 per litre, saying that this increase was a burden on the people.

“These people are being crushed in the mill of inflation day by day,” the spokesperson said in a statement. “In such a situation, further increase in prices is tantamount to dropping petrol bombs.”

The MQM-P spokesperson said that the recent wave of inflation would further reduce Pakistan's per capita income which would push more people below the poverty line.

The spokesperson demanded of the federal government to ensure targeted subsidy as soon as possible and provide subsidy to motorcyclists and public transport on petrol. The spokesperson called upon the economists to give recommendations to the government to get out of this difficult time.

According to sources, MQM-Pakistan’s Coordination Committee has summoned an emergency meeting to deliberate on the option of parting ways with the federal government over its dispute with the PPP-led Sindh government on local government delimitations in Karachi and Hyderabad.

MQM is a big drama and liars. They will go with who comes into power. PTI has learnt its lesson to keep away from them.

In a late night development on Saturday, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan announced boycotting the local government elections in Karachi, Hyderabad, and Thatta divisions scheduled to be held on Sunday (today).

“Our reservations over the delimitation of local government constituencies have not been addressed despite several assurances from the provincial government,” MQM-P convener Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui said while addressing a news conference after attending a major huddle at the party’s Bahadurabad headquarter.

Siddiqui was accompanied by Mustafa Kamal, Farooq Sattar, Aminul Haq, Faisal Sabzwari, Sadiq Iftikhar and others.

The MQM-P leaders said, “The Sindh government played its part in addressing our grievances but the Election Commission of Pakistan did not.”

Despite “our differences”, Siddiqui said, “we will stand with the government”.

A delegation of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) met Chief Election Commissioner Sikander Sultan Raja on Monday and expressed reservations regarding the delimitation of constituencies.

The delegation also raised concerns over a 'level playing field'.

MQM leaders said that Sindh has already been 'divided' as the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) is more active than the caretaker government and demanded 'clean and transparent' elections.

Senior MQM leader Farooq Sattar along with convenor Dr. Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, Javed Hanif, and Abdul Hafeez met the chief election commissioner.

Furthermore, the leaders stated that the election watchdog did not consider any objection related to delimitations in Sindh.

Speaking to the media, Siddiqui stated that although there is hope regarding the elections and alleged that the team under the CEC seems 'compromised.' The leaders appeared unconvinced and stated that the demands put forth are 'clean and clear'.

Earlier, former federal minister Ahsan Iqbal confirmed that his party, PML-N, endorsed a strong local government system after a meeting with an MQM-P delegation.

The MQM-P presented constitutional amendments, emphasizing the effectiveness of local governments in addressing people's issues. Iqbal pledged full support for the proposed amendments to be approved in the next parliament.

Both parties, allied in Sindh, expressed a commitment to collaborate with allies in the province to secure additional seats. The discussions focused on addressing public concerns, with no mention of sharing positions or ministries.

The former chief minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has expressed wish to see Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan contesting the upcoming general elections because he believed that the party is fearful of the voters. "We had tried a lot to convince MQM-P to take part in the local government elections but they boycotted the polls," he recalled while talking to the media in Aarazi area of Sehwan, Jamshoro district, on Thursday.

Refuting the MQM-P's allegations that the bureaucracy is favouring the PPP, Shah said the caretaker government reshuffled the province's entire administrative machinery after they replaced the outgoing elected government in August 2023. "We don't really care if they [interim government] once again conducted top to botton reshuffle in the province because the power of vote is vested in the public and not in the government officials."

Commenting of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl's stance with regard to postponement of the polls, Shah said they respect Molana Fazlur Rehman but the PPP wanted to see the elections taking place on the scheduled date. "The terrorists will win if the polls are delayed," he underlined.

The former CM also did not consider the ongoing winter season as a valid reason to defer the polls. Meanwhile, the PPP Sindh's President Nisar Ahmed Khuhro has said the elections will happen on February 8 because he believed that the Supreme Court will implement its order.

Talking to the media in the Miru Khan area in Kambar-Shahdadkot district on Thursday, Khuhro believed that PPP will emerge victorious not only from Sindh but from all parts of Pakistan. "After Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and Shaheed Benazir Bhutto, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari will become the country's prime minister.

On MQM-P leaders’ criticism of the Sindh government, Minister Nasir Hussain Shah termed Hassan’s statement a mere “political rhetoric”.

Sindh Minister for Department of Energy, Planning and Development Nasir Hussain Shah said that Sindh police and Rangers have begun preparations to kick off an operation against the bandits in the katcha areas.

On Hasan’s claim that the provincial government had “blackmailed” the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) to appoint someone of their choosing, the minister said that the MQM-P leader seemed like a “PML-N spokesperson”.

MQM-P considers separating from govt if Tessori is replaced: Farooq Sattar
