Brilliant Captain - once Dr. Nasim Ashraf said that Malik can lead PAK to 3 WCs (‘11 -‘19), and he was right actually. However, not being a cricket man, his (DNA) biggest mistake was that he couldn’t differentiate between formats of cricket and went for the popular idea of one Captain for all - made Malik Test Captain as well. My 1st POTW was in May 2011, on Malik and still I think that was probably my most deserving one - small but impactful post. I can’t find that post, but I can recall few points -
After the 90s corrupted generation, followed by extremely loyalist Inzi era, Dr. NA decided to start it from scratch - so he appointed a youngman as Captain, appointed a less reputed but capable coach and tried to make the selection mechanism as fair as possible - one example was to drop MoYo for Misbah (T20 WC), surprising but right decision that time. Malik started his captaincy era brilliantly, brought young players and gave them confidence - which not only irritated the oldies, also sacred them, because SM had a reputation of backing young players even at domestics also.
What happens is that Malik was never a Test quality player and he was a misfit in Test team - he knew it, but those seniors knew it better that Malik canÂ’t run the Test team without them. So, those seniors, some of the most indisciplined, egoistic and selfish players (most of them ended in ICL following their guru) started to corner him and PCB didnÂ’t back their appointed Captain, a youngman coming from a small town - so, Malik tried to solve the problem only way left to him, surrounded himself with his own admirer group. This trick is common in PAK cricket - every long term Captain protected himself this way, apart from Karder & Imran, but MalikÂ’s mistake was to try that with younger players, should have pampered few 35+ who had good contacts - they would have protected Malik in exchange of career beyond 40. It was a costly mistake that guided the next man for long term charge ..... and Misbah did rectify that mistake with ultimate proficiency.
What Malik should have done in 2007, is something he did a decade later (from bitter experience) - resign from Test captaincy and take temporary retirement, with a note that in teamÂ’s requirement he is ready to come back in Test, playing as a common player - basically to protect himself and do a MoHa job in Asia, and probably he would have done better, because unlike MoHa, he wonÂ’t have played as opener and he can bowl acceptably without chucking.
Indeed he was good enough to lead PAK for 12/13 years in LO and I personally feel, his decline between 2009 to 2013 as player was due to lack of heart more than anything else. A limited cricketer, but street smart, flexible and extremely professional - ideal person to lead modern LO sides. ItÂ’s not by chance that from AUS to BD to WI, every where he is extremely popular and young players like him for a reason. Instead of Azhar, they should have appointed him in 2015 - that might have closed the door for Sarfraz, but wonÂ’t have been a bad choice either.
