What's new

How would Virat Kohli have fared against the bowlers of the 70s, 80s and 90s?

Seriously, what does wearing helmets have to do with batting? It's now considered part of the gear, like shoe or a glove. Viv or Gavaskar wore no helmets because they were not used to it, so wearing or not wearing helmets does not make a player great or weak.
For example, I am involved in Sofball in the US, about 6 years ago face mask started making appearance and kids, especially Pitchers, first and third base were encouraged to wear them. The Kids who started playing the game without the mask did not like to wear them because they were not used to it. But the younger age group kids who started playing the game with masks used them with no problem.
Old time coaches started saying that D1 colleges will not recruit a pitcher who is wearing masks because it showed signs of fear. In the end it did not make a lick of difference, there are some great pitchers who are going to P5, D1 colleges who are wearing masks and there are sucky pitchers who don't wear masks.

I dont know about softball, it's a sillly sport imo. I do know in cricket your mentality changes with or without a helmet. For eg Viv never wore a helmet and could still pull and hook shots for six. Others who never wore a helmet refused this shot out of fear but once the helmet was on, they would take the risk. My point was even something simple as a helmet can change a batsmen, so to assume any cricketer will be just as good in a different era with different conditions of play, it's weak understanding of the game and sport in general.

Scored runs in SA on tough pitch where it was seaming and swinging against top SA bowlers. Scored in England. Scored a century on toughest pitch in Australia at Perth.

I think we need to stop analyzing now and enjoy the show.

Don't think so. With the advent of T20s, now players have to deal with 3 formats, and not to mention the leagues outside international Cricket. That's a lot of work load. Don't think the previous players would've fared any better.
Workload isn't as much of a factor for batsmen as it is for bowlers, which only serves to help batsmen in 2019 as they smash tired bowlers over the ropes.

Ambrose, at his peak, would be the number 1 bowler in the world in all formats of the game in 2019.

Tendulkar and Lara were far superior to any of the current batsmen, and both would have adapted well to the t20 format.

Kohli and Hafeez are the only modern day batsmen I would really liked to have seen batting against the West Indies quicks of the 80s, although for slightly different reasons.

1) Kohli - to see how tough this guy really is mentally, and does he have it in him to take on those guys playing hooks and pulls ? I reckon he would make it a contest.
2) Hafeez - just to see how this well his batting technique copes against that kind of short pitched fast bowling by Roberts, Holding , Marshall and Garner, especially at Sabina Park in Jamaica.

Professor will hit silken cover drives off the short pitch bowling all day

Kohli is a Muddassar Nazar equivalent for that era or maybe lower. It is an indisputable fact that Kohli thrives only because of the toothless bowling of today. A career average of 25@75 at best.
