(Web Desk) – Against the backdrop of mounting tensions between India and Pakistan, an unexpectedly humane gesture has been witnessed on part of India. Apparently, the prevailing hostilities between the two countries have not prevented India’s Minister for External Affairs Sushma Swaraj from trying to help a father get a visa for his two-and-a-half-year baby for his treatment in India.

A Pakistani national, with the Twitter username Ken Sid, tweeted a plea on May 24 to Pakistani Minister for Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz and Sushma Swaraj, asking for help for his son’s medical treatment. Apparently, the kid had been unable to secure a visa for his medical treatment in India.

On Wednesday, Sushma Swaraj replied to the tweet and in a surprising gesture of kindness, tweeted, “No. The child will not suffer. Pls contact Indian High Commission in Pakistan. We will give the medical visa.

Sushma’s gesture was met with a grateful tweet from Ken, who thanked her for all her efforts and rightly pointed out that humanity prevails despite many differences.

Gestures like these on both sides of the border are rare, but not unheard of. Sushma Swaraj had last week thanked the Pakistani judiciary and establishment for making the return of Indian national Uzma Ahmed possible. Uzma had alleged that she had been forced to marry a Pakistani man at gunpoint while on a visit to Pakistan. Sushma Swaraj had especially appreciated the efforts of Pakistan Foreign Office and Justice Mohsin Kayani of the Islamabad High Court for making Uzma’s return possible.

Earlier in January, Pakistan sent back an Indian soldier who had crossed the Line of Control. The soldier, Chandu Babulal Chohan, who was stationed in Indian Held Kashmir, had reportedly deserted his post due to grievances about mistreatment at the hands of his seniors. The Inter Services Public Relations had said that as a gesture of goodwill, Chohan had been convinced to return to his country. The soldier was later handed over to Indian authorities on humanitarian grounds.

Such examples are evident of the fact that even amidst rising tensions between the arch rivals, humanity does prevail and both people on both sides are more than ready to make gestures to increase goodwill and harmony between the two countries.

India is acting as if it's doing Pakistanis a favour issuing such visas. But most of these patients pay for their own care, pay the high visa fees, pay for accommodation in India etc etc which is all a massive boost for the Indian economy and their health sector.

Sad,it shouldn't go to External affairs ministry for something so normal, should had got approved at high commission level.

Very sad that this has become a news. I'd have expected patients to get VISA without any trouble. Why are politics being played here?

Ludicrous that we denied a visa to the sick child. We shouldn't be celebrating Sushma Swaraj stepping in, this entire policy should be reversed

Sushma Swaraj (well her team I suppose) does a lot of great work as a result of Twitter. It shouldn't have got to this stage however the fact that someone living in Pakistan can attract the attention of the Indian foreign secretary through social media is pretty cool.

Health matters should not be mixed with political rivalry.

I hope all struggling patients in Pakistan get Indian Visas if they can get better or cheaper treatment in India.

Sushma Swaraj is a lot in the News these days for her kindhearted gestures.

Sushama is the most universally loved BJP minister in this government. Here work in the external affairs department has been exemplary, especially with regards to Indian migrants in the middle east.

Last time she was in hospital for some major surgery, there were call for prayers by many NRI indians in social media especially Keralites. So that is one way of winning hearts.

Her name is also doing the rounds as the next President.

True. She has done a lot to the families whose loved ones were trapped in the middle east. Have to give credit to her and her team.

On topic, it's pretty sad that these families from across the border have to go through... If they had money, they would have gone to US or other developed nations instead of this enemy country. They are helpless i guess....

That's typical central politics. Congress kind of did the same with Pranab Mukherjee.

She's the only senior BJP leader with PM ambitions who has not yet been kicked out/put in her place(Advani, shourie) . Unlike Rajnath, Gadkari or even Jaitley, she can hold her own against Modi. Even if she doesn't have the same huge fan base, her approval is far more universal amongst Indians.

So place her as the seemingly high position of President, but deny her of any tangible political power.
