ONE of Pakistan cricket’s true entertainers has declared he won’t hold back on his flamboyance with the bat during the tour match starting Thursday.
Sarfraz Ahmed, who has a Test batting average of 41 and a strike rate akin to Australia’s star opener David Warner, threatens to put on a show unless the Cricket Australia XI can dismiss him cheaply during the three-day match.
The 29-year-old pulled out a reverse sweep and a switch hit in Pakistan’s first net session at Cazalys yesterday and said it was part of his mantra of playing positive cricket.
“I’ll play my natural game here. My natural game is to play positive cricket,” Ahmed told the Cairns Post.
“It depends on the conditions and depends on the position we are in. Sometimes batting at No. 7 you bat with the tailenders so that’s why I play naturally, play positive cricket and more aggressive shots sometimes.”
Ahmed said he enjoyed being back in Australia, where he made his Test debut in 2010 at Hobart, and hoped to continue a good record against them, which included one of his three Test centuries.
Ahmed said the Far North had treated the Pakistan team well off the field and now would prepare well for the tour match and Test series.
“We had a very good session here and there are very good facilities here. We enjoyed it a lot of the weather is very helpful. These conditions suit us,” Ahmed said.
The wicketkeeper does as much talking behind the stumps as he does with the willow and has been working closely with Pakistan’s Australian fielding coach Steve Rixon in a bid to adapt to the relative bounce in the pitch compared to those of his homeland.
“I really enjoying wicketkeeping here, so hopefully I get a lot of caught-behind,” Ahmed said. “I’ve been performing really well in Test cricket, so that’s why I’m here.”
Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq, who missed the second Test against New Zealand last week, joined the squad in Cairns yesterday morning and posed for photos with Far North players who tested themselves in the nets.
But it appeared out-of-form Younis Khan was the one being tested, nicking behind against Tully bowler Brenton Edwards.
Cricket Australia XI players began arriving in Cairns yesterday and will hold their first training session today.
