Asad Shafiq speaking to media

"Our training camp is doing well; our focus is on fitness and we have had sessions in nets as well as on fitness"

"Of course, we will miss the services of Misbah and Younis who have served with distinction for many years but it will be up to Azhar, Sarfaraz and me to take on the responsibility now"

"Yasir Shah is a bowler who can bowl out an opposition regardless of pitch conditions"

"But we do have some quality spinners who can make a difference too"

"You may think that I have not helped in winning matches for Pakistan but in my opinion, I have contributed as much as I can"

"Test match is a format in which the whole team contributes in a win and not just one person"

"Whenever I play, I always try and do my best and try to play a role in Pakistan's victory"

"I have played at 6 in most Test matches and sometimes, you don't get to bat in 2nd innings or sometimes when you come into bat at that position then you are batting with the tail; so chances of scoring more runs comparatively are higher in higher order positions"

"Hopefully, if the management so decides, I will bat at a higher order like 4 or 5 in this series"

"Our batting did not perform to the level we wanted to in the previous series in the UAE (against SL)"

"My performance in Tests is better than shorter formats but if you look at my performances in the domestic tournaments, they have been good"

"Our fast-bowling has the capability to do well with Mohammad Amir and Hasan Ali bowling well - and as we know, the conditions will be favourable for fast-bowling in England"

"Our fast-bowlers can give us an edge but its upto our batting unit to use that advantage"

Get your act together or go home if you can't be consistent enough. About time we need to come hard on Shafiq, guy's been freeloading since nearly a year now!

Competition is tough now for Shafiq with the likes of hussain talat coming in he will now get his act together or he knows he will have to go

There was a time when, performance wise, him and Azhar were neck and neck, Shafiq looking the more complete batsman.

Big series for him, hoping...whatever happens that he is of positive mindset and well prepped. Two quite basic yet fundamental parts of cricket, which I feel we have only just started getting the hang of.

Not consistent enough to be batting anywhere higher than no. 6.
No.3 should be given to Haris, no. 4 to Babar/Saad Ali and no.5 to Fawad/Usman. Azhar to open alongside Imam or Sami(if he has improved his game).

Will be a do or die series for Shafiq.

It's been like that for the last five series. I really hope Shafiq either comes up with the goods or fails completely.... his "in-between" performances are what are keeping him in the side, but truth be told after Azhar, Shafiq seems the most established name in the side and that just shows how bad our test side is.

Babar is mediocre in tests from what he has shown so far. Sami is a glorified nightwatchman who struggles to bat at a SR of more than 30. Shan and Imam are nepotistic selections and will get exposed. Salahuddin is talented and classy but he has been warming the bench for a year without having a debut, you never know he might get dropped and forgotten without even a chance. Haris Sohail twists his ankle and pulls a hammy when he steps on grass.

This guy should be Mickeys next target. He’s discarded a lot of useless seniors now and I think it’s probably Shafiqs turn now if he doesn’t get his act together

He has been one of the biggest disappointments. It's not that he is bad it's just that he hasn't stepped up his game to the next level. He is 32 and well experienced, for such a player just 'good' doesn't cut it anymore.

Exactly, we have seen the best of you already. Time to move on from TTFs like Shafiq.

Big series for him now that Misbah and YK have gone.

Needs to up his game and show more consistency.

Babar has been hard done by in tests imo. Shouldn’t have been introduced straight in as a number 3.

Spot on. It's not the norm to expose a rookie at number 3 in alien conditions like in Aus, normally they're allowed to settle in at 5 or ideally 6 and work their way up the order from there

His long term position should have been 4 imo when the ball is slightly older and he can play his strokes.

Probably Pakistan's most inconsistent test batsman.

He has that nag of scoring one 50+ score which gets him through to the next tour. Just like Hafeez in the ODI's (before Mickey took action).

If he flops I hope he dropped forever. But unfortunately his best friend is the skipper who plays him in PSL

Fawad should have been picked ahead of him, I'm not sure how he's been in the team for so long especially since he's never won Pakistan a game and certainly not saved us a game!!!! 😪

Needs to play with more determination but does that mean one run every 15 mins?

Shafiq is on a different level to the rest of this batting lineup. Only Azhar comes close.

As one poster said in the match thread, he does not have power to play pulls etc - so should stick to his strengths.

He doesn't really have any, if anything the pull is probably one of his better shots. His main strength is just his steadiness, usually that's not enough once he's up against top class opposition.

His best is not good enough. PCB really need to get rid of him as he has been a medicore investment. I rather have given Fawad Alam this opportunity and he would have performed much better.
