If he can't play for his local T20 team then he shouldn't play ODI cricket
 
I didn't see anyone comparing him with legends so what he is on about lol? If anyone was comparing with legends they need to be named and shamed.
 
He's 33, overweight, and has a mediocre domestic record.

Only in Pakistan would someone like that become the top opener. He's not even a consistent minnow basher

He's not overweight first of all. He passed the fitness tests and was one of the best in the A+ category. Second of all, he was top scorer for domestics for several seasons and has done well in Tests so far. He will especially be useful for home Tests especially.

I don't think he is suited to the modern white-ball formats.

Maybe in the past teams needed orthodox and safe opening batsmen in ODIs who would see off the new ball, but not these days.

I don't think he's the right option to open in ODIs.

Tbh I liked the left-right combo he made with Fakhar and if he was younger, I wouldn't mind. But now that Haider has found a spot on the roster (a lot quicker than I thought he would), I think he is the one who should partner Fakhar at the top with Imam as backup, provided that Haris is available at #4. If Haris shows he's unable to make it to the 2023 WC, then I'd have Haider at. and open with Imam and Fakhar.

Imam's SR in the powerplay is no secret and he's really gotta get that sorted. However, he walks into the squad for sure - just not in the XI, as I'd much rather have the dynamic pair of Fakhar and Haider opening for us ideally.

As far as Abid is concerned, they should leave him for Tests. Haider's emergence should mean the end of the former's ODI career.

I would go with fakhar and imaam one stability one attacking and haider at 4 new dynamic player in the middle I dont see how haris can survive with injuries and fitnes.if fakhar loses form further I would then play hope opening and abdullah at 4

An absolute paindoo. Who the hell was comparing you with legends??! Sums up his mentality.

Standards are so low that we have guys like him who celebrate streaky 50s by taking off their helmet (think England tour) Another from the Khurram Manzoor mould basically.
 
Celebrating a 50 by taking off his helmet was embarrassing. Not sure if you will ever see tailender do it let alone a Opener.
 
His technique as I stated before as well is only suited for flat track bowling. Initially I felt he could be a reliable Odi opener as there are flat tracks but with performances of Rizwan up the order now makes me think he has nothing much to offer as Rizwan is better than him in opening and Rizwan opening in ODIs will gives us an extra player down the order.

If you look at his technique it's obvious that within a few balls you can see he is someone brought up on low bounce wickets. The hands are low, the foot movement is predominantly forward and he doesn't always get behind the line of the ball.

All the above traits are fine on low and slow wickets as you will not get caught out by these flaws, but when you come up against better and quicker bowling attacks and on faster surfaces, those kinks in your technique will get shown up again and again.
 
I mean what do the people here expect?

They make a player score runs after runs on low, slow domestic wickets for 10 seasons and then make him tour SENA countries at the age of 33 when he has no experience of those conditions and is also now old thus having very little likelihood of improving his game and developing himself for such conditions.

This is the problem with Pakistan selection which makes me want to tear my hair out. Either were selecting teenagers who just aren’t ready or prepared for top level cricket or selecting 30+ year olds who have spent their entire careers on Pakistani wickets and clearly are past the age where they can develop their game for all conditions.

I agree he performed poorly but the guy came on team on merit, he had been piling up runs in domestic cricket and everyone was annoyed as to why he wasn't getting his chance

I agree. I was actually disappointed when was dropped from World cup team because i liked how he played vs Aus in ODI series before WC. Now i know why. He got exposed like most desi players in NZ. Mayank Agarwal was looking million bucks in IPL but in Aus, he looks like a sitting duck with his high backlift. To be honest its not really fault of our players. They should have been sent to more A tours abroad growing up. Even NZ batsmen don't really have flawless techniques but they can manage because they grew up playing on these wickets.

I think you are misunderstanding his comments, he said that in a humble way.

But like most pakistani batsmen he is rubbish I am afraid.
 
I wouldnt write him off just yet. He did show a better fight in NZ compared to other batsmen.
 
Think he will be gone if he doesn't perform in this series. You can't blame the selectors, you need to perform consistently to stay in the team. You can't have one semi decent score and then go missing your 7-8 consecutive series
 
Pakistan has no openers , no middle order batsmen except Babar who is still in the making, fast bowling battery is very weak that only shaheen looks decent, cant see bowlers cutting and pulling Hasan Ali what a comedy.. Spinners good in Asian conditions , seen nowhere in SENA conditions..

Certified minnow level team...

He's got one more innings to show us something. After a dismissal to a straight ball I don't think he'll get another chance. At least I hope not.

Btw who compared him with legends that too scoring against sl in home that shows the mindset of players. They are happy performing once in a while against low ranked teams and think they are one of the best in the business.

I feel bad for him, i reckon it's our system and lack of a proper training structure to better prepare players in away conditions. However, to be fair that ball was roaring fast, some of these guys aren't used to such raw pace. I hope inshAllah the first 2 sessions pose no threat and the tea session is the one to look out for.
 
His batting is legendary, it’s a myth. A thing of tales and legends.

I know my posts aren’t overtly positive recently but I don’t like how the youngsters who should be debuted at home as batsman and spinners with conditions they are familiar with are instead saved to be thrown in the deep end with conditions of facing 140+ kph on green wickets and having to be debuting as a spinner on spinner graveyards like NZ.

Instead we are debuting Misbah aged men who are close to date of expiry.
 
He is on thin ice. He has to play at least one good innings in the next 3 in this series. The conditions suit him, he should do well.
 
The shot today against South Africa was woeful.

Look at his footwork and his head position.

I have a feeling that if he continues to struggle, this will be his last series.
 
Pakistan would be world beater today if the players were half as good with bat and ball as they are with running their mouth.
 
BTW which legend was he compared with? Basit Ali?

Amusing to see the brilliant careers of the people who made golden comments like Ghar ka Kohli, India is scared of playing us, fear in the batsman's eyes, will take 10 wks against India etc etc.

Which lagend did the interviewer compare him with? Or did he go ahead and added that bit by himself? If he said that responding to a comparison made by the interviewer then you are probably right and I indeed made a wrong judgement.
 
Abid Ali will get one more test and that'll be it. He was completely out of his depth facing a quality bowler such as Rabada.

He got his chance too late to be able to adapt to international cricket. You saw it today too how he has seldom been used to playing balls that bounce above the knee. Low hands and a crouched stance will usually leave a batsman unbalanced when up against balls bouncing off a good length.

It was a nickname given to him by his teammates to tease him, that is why journalist asked him about it.
 
Time to replace him with Imam. Abid is very good against minnow level attacks in home conditions but he does not have the ability to score against good bowlers.

At his age, there is no real possibility of him improving either. Time to go.

Imam is just as rubbish and struggled vs New zealand in UAE. He was given a run of around 11 test and was found to be inept as well.
 
Another dismissal to a ball which barely moved off it's line. Bad enough he done it in the first innings, but to repeat it just shows his technique is too loose. He needs to go. Not a fan of Imam either but at least a bowler has to work him over to get him out. With Abid you just need to bowl fast and straight.

My preference is just to replace one batsman per year.

So Saud Shakeel in for Abid Ali now, then Haider Ali and Abdullah Shafique to replace Azhar Ali and Fawad Alam in 2022 and 2023.
 
There are some truly mean, spiteful and vicious “fans” on this forum. The moment a player experiences a dip in form and after a few poor innings you lot come out like rats in the night.

People need to grow up a little and you know who you are.
 
Imam is worth persevering with, younger, more scope to improve, Abid has had his chance and it's clear he's been found out.

if you take out his early sucess against sri Lanka he averages 19 or something. I dont think that's a drop in form. He is already 33 (probably older) I dont think he can correct his technique now. He simply is not good enough for this level and someone else should play instead of him.

The same was being said about Fawad Alam after the series in England!

Abid Ali averages 39 after 15 innings and had 2 centuries and plus a few dogged innings. This is not a bad start to a test career albeit it started at a more mature age. He is also a player who has proved himself at the domestic level.

The Pakistani tendency of emotional over reaction has not served us well. We need to sit back, relax, enjoy the game, support the team and players and realise that most of us were at best decent club players and out insight into the international game is of a very limited nature.

Abid Ali is not an established Test batsman. He may average 39 overall, but his precise averages are:

160.50 v Sri Lanka
27.80 v England
19.00 v New Zealand
7.00 v South Africa
0.00 v Bangladesh

The thing is its hard to drop a guy who is averaging 39, even if its because he padded his stats against a B grade Sri Lanka team. We need to wait till his average is around 35 before he can be dropped.

Absolutely, however we need to wait for him to fail a couple of more times so his average drops a bit. Even though he padded his stats against a weak Sri Lanka team, the average of 39 still looks good for a Pakistani opener.

Going by your logic, or lack of it, even if Abbas doesn't take a wickets for a year we shouldn't drop him because his average would still be under 30.

When you are the selector, your job is to select to best players available to win your country the next match, series. And not hope for more failures to make the job easy for you to drop players.

As a selector you also need to give a fair run to whoever is selected. Is it fair to drop him after we had tours in England and New Zealand where he failed? And one test against South Africa in Pakistan?

Overall his 2020 was good, stat wise.

Abbas has played for 4 years, Abid has barely crossed one year. Thats an apples to oranges comparisons. If Abbas fails for one whole year to take a wicket, you of course drop him. It does not matter what his average is, as he has a larger number of matches that can hide his poor performance.

Same way Asad Shafiq and Fawad Alam have the same average. However one is a proven failure while the other needs to be a given a long run in the squad.


I said we need to wait for him to fail a couple more times. A couple means 2. So he fails again in the next test drop him.
 
How long do we keep persisting with a consistent failure? He's supposed to be a home track bully, he was pathetic last game. I understand keeping him going into this series, as changing both openers may have been too much, but when he inevitably fails in this 2nd game, he should follow Masood out the door.
 
If Abid manages to get this game, the only way that he'll convince me of his spot in the XI is if he scores a 150+ run knock. Otherwise, that should be it for him in tests.
 
He is Abid Ali and he should let us have a proper opener instead of occupying the spot.

i would move azhar up the order and give saud the chance or kamran at 3.

hes been given enough chances to perform but i stil belive he should be given the last test to perform.

Lets be honest hes been realy good in asain conditions even if the bowling wasnt the best but hes a walking wicket in sena he hasnt had 1 single innings were he has scored decently hence but i would stil give him the next test
