Pakistan’s ODI struggles with the bat in 2018 seem to be a far cry from the heady days of 2017 where some emerging talents had provided renewed hope of resurgence for the Champions Trophy winners. More in hope rather than with any firm conviction, supporters of Pakistan cricket are now turning their attention towards the next edition of the Pakistan Super League, where they expect the next batting superstar will make a dramatic appearance and herald a turnaround for Pakistan’s fortunes in the 50-over format, a la Fakhar Zaman in 2017.

All eyes were thus eagerly focused on the PSL draft which took place on 20th November, with a multitude of young hopefuls looking forward to getting an opportunity to showcase their variety of skills in Pakistan’s premier T20 league.

Of the many youngsters hoping for a golden opportunity to ignite their budding careers was 21-year-old Zeeshan Malik, an opening batsman from Chakwal who excelled while representing Pakistan at the Under-19 World Cup in 2016. In an exclusive interview with PakPassion.net, a crestfallen Zeeshan explained why he felt he had a strong case to be selected by one of the PSL sides, and expressed his disappointment at being overlooked during the draft despite impressive recent performances in domestic cricket.

“I honestly thought that this would be my year and my chance for a Pakistan Super League contract”, he said. “I am totally gutted that I have missed out once again.”

With scores of 145, 149 and 118 for Rawalpindi in the recently concluded Quaid-e-Azam One Day Cup, Zeeshan felt he was in with an excellent chance of being chosen by one of the six PSL teams. He stated, “I have been in good form and made three centuries in my last 4 List-A innings and the ball has been coming nicely off the bat. I have been batting with great confidence and have really felt good about my batting this season.”

Having taken part in Lahore Qalandars’ Rising Stars T20 tournament and Islamabad United’s Twin Cities Takra T20 tournament last year, the youngster hit three fantastic hundreds and was convinced that he would be selected this time around by one of the franchises after following up those performances with superb displays for Rawalpindi in the 50-over format.

“I was really looking forward to showcasing my ability at one of the world's premier Twenty20 tournaments, but it wasn't to be”, he said. “What can I say, other than I am heartbroken at missing out on PSL4, a tournament that is all about giving opportunities to young Pakistani players and giving them a chance to shine on the world stage.”

Despite being in the emerging players lists for the PSL drafts for all four editions of the tournament, the young batsman has not been picked a single time so far. However, he is not ready to give up just yet.

“Whilst I am really downbeat at the moment, as a professional sportsman you have to lift yourself and look ahead to the future. All I can do is to perform whenever I get the chance and in whatever format that is. You have to take the blows on your chin and rise from them, but the continuous setbacks are tough to take.”

The looming National T20 Cup 2018 (December 10th-25th) is an ideal chance for Zeeshan to showcase his skills and show why the PSL franchises made an error by overlooking him and he is upbeat about performing well in this tournament.

“The upcoming National Twenty20 tournament gives me a chance to show once again what I can do”, he articulated. “I will be focused on scoring heavily in this tournament and impressing whoever I need to impress to enable me to get a chance in future editions of the Pakistan Super League tournaments. I'll be playing for Multan in this tournament and this gives me the chance to make a fresh start and hopefully get a proper chance in the Twenty-Over format.”

Along with performing well in the near future, a thoughtful Zeeshan also realises that he may have to take some tough decisions in order to bring about a change in his fortunes and kick-start his career. Since his domestic cricket debut for Rawalpindi in 2016, he has played only 16 matches across formats. “I guess I have to look at where I am as a cricketer and make some tough decisions about my future”, he stated. “Sometimes you have to make difficult decisions today for a better tomorrow. Let's see what happens but I am definitely looking at my options at the moment as that may mean that I will get more opportunities and the chance to really play on a regular basis rather than the occasional match.”

The youngster is, however, keeping his spirits high. He knows that with almost three months to go for the commencement of PSL 4, a lot can happen in that time frame, and there is an outside chance of him being picked as a replacement player. He is also aware of the fact that the Pakistan Cricket Board permitted a 21st pick for the PSL teams one year ago after the conclusion in the 2017 National T20 Cup. If such an eventuality were to happen again, the door would once again be opened for players such as Zeeshan which is an opportunity that he would accept with both hands.

“Despite the setback of not being picked for PSL4, I am keeping my spirits up as you never know what may happen as I may be called up as a replacement player. Of course, I wouldn't wish injury on any player but sometimes one player's loss is another player's gain, and even getting into the Pakistan Super League as a replacement player would be an amazing outcome.”

There is little doubt that, akin to any other developing cricketer, Zeeshan just wants a chance to show his abilities in front of a worldwide audience where the opportunities for exposure are unlimited. For that to happen, he needs regular chances to impress and when he gets them, he needs to make them count as he did in the Quaid-e-Azam One Day Cup earlier this season. This is a challenge that Zeeshan Malik understands fully and is ready to take on, “I just want that chance to show my talent properly and not in bit-parts every now and then. Hopefully going forward, I will be playing on a more regular basis and that is important as a cricketer, because that means you get that chance to show selectors and the public what you are made of. I'm remaining positive, don't count me out just yet.”

Gotta feel for him :(

Whenever a player is neglected and other players are picked above merit I don't feel for a bright future of our team.

Can we start some sort of social media campaign to get him included somehow??

Feel for him.But we sould have interviwed him and given him more coverage before the draft.

can we start a PP campaign to raise awareness about him? or would that just be futile in a system without merit

Hope he performs in national t20. Otherwise the franchises and Shakeel Shaikhs of the domestic cricket will spit on our faces.

Just to make everyone aware.

We've sent videos of Zeeshan to Mickey Arthur and others. In fact we put videos of his centuries on social media well before the PSL draft.

What did Mickey (and others) say?

Picking Jaahid Ali in place of Zeeshan is absolute madness. Jaahid has a LA strike rate lower than Azhar Ali fgs and he is selected?

They have probably selected Jaahid to give confidence and reassurance to the mental midgets who would have otherwise felt insecure of their places in the starting 11.

What did Mickey (and others) say?

Mickey said that he had left the signing of the KK emerging players to Wasim Akram and Rashid Latif.

I also sent him the batting figures of Jaahid Ali - his reply was "does he bowl?" :) :)

Great player but like most of our greats, Wasim is really awful at his job. He is lucky that he is so famous that he gets an easy pay check.

Rashid and Wasim are both rubbish. The only one from their PTV crew that has some cricketing sense is Mohammad Wasim. Unfortunately, he doesn't have a lot of influence.

Agreed Wasim destroyed multan last year and will screw kk this year. Have you listened to Rashid latif on ptv, the guy never makes sense will analysing. I absolutely agree that the only person making sense is Mohammad Wasim. I don’t know
why ptv call Rashid latif? Amir Sohail, M wasim would have been better choices and even Yousuf.

Im sure if he scores in domestic cricket he will get a chance in the PSL eventually but honestly can't believe he wasn't selected this year.

Moin's son got selected and not this guy. Let that sink in. Take your time.

Any chance Mickey can have a say and reverse the KK pick?

What does mickey think about Sadaf hussain?

Let's be honest here. Islamabad United is the only team that has people who select players based quality, talent and obscure T20 stats that no one knows of. Just look at their previous season picks like: Luke Ronchi or Shadab Khan. Rest of the teams just don't seem to care. Too many young or potentially promising players are missing out either because of nepotism or because franchise decision-makers simply know nothing about the domestic scene.

These are the times when the sportsmen have to hold their own. This is a part and parcel of a players development, there are times when you would feel hard done by and u may want to give it all up but what defines you as a sportsman is how you deal with the tough times and come out better than before. No doubt Zeeshan Malik has really been hard done by and should have been one of the first picks in the emerginb category. Must be really hard on him but he must not lose focus and must continue to work hard, his time will come sooner or later. You just can not side line talent for too long.

His list A strike rate is 68.9

Jaahid Ali is a favourite of Rashid Latif........the rest as they say is history.

Saj bhai also send videos of Kamran Ghulam, Saif Badar, Hasan Mohsin to mickey arthur and other coaches to make them aware of these kids because they are performing in domestic and are real talent that should have been picked in any of the psl sides..

All sent to Mickey and plenty of others.

Sadly many of those working in Pakistan cricket including the PSL are only in it for themselves and to line their own pockets.

Good Saj bhai.. carry on your good work.. hopefully your efforts will bear some fruit and these kids will be in contention for psl and in national team.. Yes whole domestic and pcb needs a revamp and honest personalities are needed to take pakistan cricket to next level and hopefully one day we will get our wishes. Because immense talent is being wasted due to this corrupt system in domestic and pcb..

He needs to keep his head held high and try and carrying on performing in domestics. Someone could always get injured!

I can't make sense of his not selection. He is readymade product. At 20 he can deliver as a top order bat. You don't even have to invest time in him.

And its not like PSL has many Local top order superstars.

How do you know of him? Even Pakistanis barely know about him.

I would have selected him but that's really too much. He should put his head down and work. He is no star, just 20 years old.
Nothing to show in the 8 first class matches he has played, nothing to show in T20's.

Zeeshan has played 2 T20 and less than 10 one day matches. I agree Jahid selection is only because of Rashid Latif but Zeeshan Malik will get plenty of chances. He needs to get his head down and should concentrate on his career. Seems to be a cry baby if I am not being harsh.

So much of Pakistani culture is rotten. Forget performance or merit, are you in the good books of certain ex-players who'll lobby for you regardless of merit ? This has led to so many guys not getting a fair shot including these guy who has 3 hundreds in just LA matches.

This is a reality check for those who expect PSL to be a magic bullet for our domestic cricket - the selection process is still riddled with favouritism and incompetence.

Just watched videos of some of his innings and I feel he needs to improve his footwork.

Thought his selection was political.

Rashid Latif made sure of Jaahid's selection.

As for Zeeshan, he needs to concentrate on being friendly with experienced current players and former players who are involved in the PSL.

First of all PSL name should be replaced by CCL(Chacha's Cricket League).

Dear Zeeshan Malik, first you become chacha(35+) then only PSL franchisee will think about your selection.

He is heart broken too soon!! look at Fawad Alam man!!

Success is the result of perfection, hard work, learning from failure, loyalty, and persistence.

Good opportunity for him at the Emerging Cup. Let's see what he can do.

And the guy misses out on the playing xi for today's match against HongKong, as did Md Musa.

There are only two players in Pakistan domestic currently who have been the victim of injustice and they are Fawad alam and Sadaf hussain. They have years of consistent performances behind them and still get neglected.

He has only played 20 matches and he is dreaming of T20 franchises to run after him. He needs to keep his head down and perform consistently instead of crying of PSL snub. Make your name in domestic first and then cry.

He's in the KPK squad for the Pakistan Cup, but don't see him getting many games with Abid Ali and captain Salman Butt opening the batting.

I was looking for this thread. Omg wth I can't believe how thick some of the Franchise owners are. Picking TTFS and relu kattas and grandpa's over such a talent. And the circus continues.

Mystery continues!

Pathetic decision considering franchise have selected the likes of jaahid ali ,azam khan

Quaid azam trophy final is vital for him .he
needs to score hundred in one inning atleast

Why did everyone think he will get selected in the first place LOL! :))

This is Pakistan and it works hand in hand with nepotism and favoritism.

It is about who you know not how you know and nothing else.

Needed a relative as one of the PSL coaches.

He is very talented and this was a great chance for him to develop but alas its not what you know, its who you know.

Deserved a chance to be in PSL this season. Harsh to miss out considering some of players that were picked.

Can't expect anything good from this system, this feels like a show run by mafias and favoritism.
Genuine talent not getting thru, this is what these monster Akmals have eaten all these years and the mafias backing them.
Tehre is a whole list of playerts who are wonderful T20 performers but as they rely on their performances instead of powerful backers they only suffer.

Zeeshan Malik is too talented to be ignored, they'll be arm-twisted to get him in. He needs to keep performing. Abid Ali also unfortunately is ignored same with Mukhtar Ahmed.

He is the real miss as he could have added value in any T20 side, other names revolving around are nothing exceptional in T20s but Zeeshan could have been.

Salman Butt
Shan Masood
Awais Zia
Azam Khan
Jaahid Ali
Khurram Manzoor

How can anyone with an iota of cricket knowledge pick the above players ahead of Zeeshan

The reasons I can think of; Khurram and Azam Khan are of QGs Omar Associates club quota while Awais Zia was the highest scorer in the national T20 cup while Salman Butt and Jaahid Ali are their because of LQ's inherent insecurity about not being able to play 20 overs on most occasions. Shan isnt a T20 player however MS management might be looking at him captaining the side as he comes across as a well groomed individual.

Such a shame though.
