Pacer Mohammad Abbas gets hero’s welcome on return to Sialkot

SIALKOT: Medium pacer Mohammad Abbas, who took his maiden ten-wicket haul in a match to fire Pakistan to a 373-run win over Australia in the second Test, returned to the country to a hero’s welcome on Saturday.

Speaking to the media at Sialkot airport, the 28-year-old who hails from Sambrial Tehsil, said, “I knew that one day God would reward me for my hard work.”

“My aim was that I perform in whatever condition there is,” he added. “I received a lot of opportunities but chose to focus on my cricket. I am not ashamed of the fact that I have worked as a welder before and done other odd jobs.”

Abbas, who was awarded the Man-of-the-Match as well as Man-of-the-Series, continued, “No one from my area has represented Pakistan in a Test match before.”

Thanking those who gathered at the airport to receive him, the medium pacer said, “I am always available for those seeking to play cricket.”

“I will continue to perform,” he further vowed.

It was Abbas, 28, who destroyed Australia with a haul of 17 wickets in the series — becoming the first Pakistani fast bowler to take ten wickets in a Test since Mohammad Asif did so against Sri Lanka at Kandy in 2006.

A decade ago, Abbas was working as an office boy in a court, registering documents for cases related to real estate. Before that, he was a welder and a factory worker.

Even Irfan worked in a factory before PP helped him out.

(I know word 'talent' spooks kids at PP but) it is brutal how many talented cricketers might still be under radar in Pakistan.

Makes one wonder.

Happy for Abbas. He is a champion bowler. In Sha Allah, he will keep on winning games for us :)

every where else, a young budding cricketer, starts a career young, is provided with facilities, training, support, pay, motivation.

then they come through become legends on world stage.

A kid in AUs, NZ, Eng or SA have amazing structures and support, to some extent India too. Pakistan ka aadha talent to ghar ko chalane mein aur paise kamane mein zaaya hojaata hai.

a potential talent ielsewhere is supported right through a young age, his fulld ay job is to train, on the other hand pakistan players, koi darzi hai (Yousuf), koi welder (Abbas) koi mechanic ka helper (Saqlain) aur saath phir first class bhi try karte rehna hai! despite this they breakthrough and provide a decent enough challenge to players who have focused solely on buildign their career in cricket

A welder become national team hero. Wow! Sialkot is the home of sporting dreams! Grats to him and Praise to Allah for making it happen.

“It is in the pind where the real tailunt resides.” - Bhaijaan

Like mentioned above the true treasure of both India and Pakistan resides purely in the small cities. India’s cricketing boom in last 15 years or so could also be attributed to them finding great athletes/work horses with far more hunger than those timid kids of English medium schools in tier-1 cities. They wanna do it for the luxury cars and Bollywood girlfriends but the paindoo will do it to get out of poverty and uplift his family/his village and he won’t stop at nothing.

Present Indian team is the most paindoo of all time and the results are there to be seen. 7/10 guys in Indian team cant speak English but they deliver when it matters unlike the soft players of the past.

With Pakistan actually it’s the opposite, they had a lot of paindoo in their team in past. Nowadays it’s mostly the kids from affluent schools/families and younsee the result it’s the most soft Pakistani team of 50 years.

If you wanna get ahead invest in Abbas’s type guys.

You shouldn't be. Abbas is an inspiration for many upcoming youngsters. Hope he stays grounded and success doesn't get to his head. He knows his limitations and thats the best thing about him.

What’s wrong with being s welder. Salary is quite high in western countries and it requires quite some skill to weld. Be proud of that job.

The desi people have quite the discrimination among different jobs. It is sad indeed.

I have worked as a helper in construction Ukraine just for some extra bucks during summer vacation. In India, you can't even think about it because your whole family will drive you nuts of you do.

"Do we have not enough food one the table that you have to work as helper?"

I was lucky because my father was supportive (he might not have liked it but didn't discouraged either). But many of my friends were scolded.
