Kicking off the address, PM Imran said that people will have to mentally prepare themselves to "live with the virus".

"Lockdowns are meant to curb the spread of the virus but can they stop it?" he asked, adding that data from Wuhan, South Korea and Germany showed that cases spike again after restrictions are lifted.

"I have been saying this since day one that we cannot implement the same lockdown that has been enforced in developed countries [...] they don't have the same kind of poverty that we do."

The premier added that approximately 150 million daily wagers and workers have been affected by the lockdown. "How long can the government continue the Ehsaas programme and how long will Rs12,000 be sufficient for one family?" he asked.

"We know that the country's cases will increase, but we also know that if we don't start taking steps [to ease restrictions], people will start dying of hunger. As prime minister I have to think about these people.

"Others may be concerned with saving their economies, but I am only concerned about preventing my people from dying of hunger," he said.

The premier added that Pakistan's coronavirus situation has not proceeded according to initial projections. "We have not witnessed the same things that other countries have witnessed," he said.

He also urged the nation to follow the government's standard operating procedures (SOPs).

Addressing business owners, he said: "It is very important for you to follow SOPs. If cases rise in one particular area, such as a factory, we will be forced to lock that area down. It will cause you harm.

"The nation will have to take responsibility and show discipline so that we can curb the spread of the virus and help those that have been affected."

Touching upon the resumption of transport services, the premier said that a few provinces feared that the virus will spread if public transport is allowed to resume.

"We have not taken a decision [regarding this]. Whatever decision we take, we have to think about how we can help the vulnerable [because] public transport is for the poor. We will be making their lives more difficult."

The premier also announced that cash handouts under the Prime Minister's Coronavirus Relief Fund will begin from Monday. The main objective of the fund is to help those who have become unemployed due to the virus, he said.

Imran concluded the press conference by adding that Pakistan will emerge as a "stronger nation" from the current crisis.

"From here on out till the end of the year, make up your mind that you will have to live with corona [...] we will have to live with it until we have a vaccine," he reiterated.

Slow down testing?

It's not progressing as fast as it should have but the numbers are going up every day. 13,700 tests yesterday which is the highest single-day total so far.

Today 13,700 tests were conducted which is highest in a day. Please remember your level of posts and logic might work in patwari circles but here people are a little more informed and ready to present facts.

The reality is that it ain't going away. The badniyaati of Nooras and the PPP was that they were literally praying for the virus spread and kills 1000s , so that chaos ensues and they could claim to be the saviours. This was the reason that SS came back and this was the reason Billo and his band of crooks lockdown without even a basic plan. The virus will kill people but hunger will kill more.

I haven't come across any news report of people dying of hunger in Pakistan during this epidemic.

It's more likely to be malnutrition over a period of time. The poor can't magic money or food, they rely on the charity of relatives and neighbours for a while, but if the lockdown continues it will quite literally lead to hunger. The CV needs to be tackled in a sensible manner, no one can just lockdown until it goes away, especially a poor country. And without a vaccine it will come again. Educate the people to be aware of how it increases and then hope that they follow the advice.

ISLAMABAD: The three-day session of the National Assembly, which had been requisitioned to debate and review the coronavirus situation in Pakistan, concluded on Friday without any constructive outcome as the treasury and opposition kept trading barbs during the sitting.

The treasury benches accused the opposition of not supporting the government in the fight against coronavirus, while the opposition criticised the government for failing to have a clear “strategy” to effectively deal with the situation.

In an unusual happening, a lawmaker from Kurram district, Munir Khan Orakzai, fell to the floor and was immediately taken out of the house.

Briefing the house on the government measures to deal with the situation, Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiative Asad Umar said the sagacious ‘smart lockdown strategy’ of Prime Minister Imran Khan was being followed by many other countries. He said the number of Covid-19 cases would continue to surge.

Minister says PM’s ‘smart lockdown strategy’ is being followed by many countries

The minister, however, rejected the opposition’s claim that the government had lifted the lockdown when the cases of Covid-19 were going up. “Most of the speeches were not more political gimmickry during the session,” he said, adding that some opposition members said the disease could prolong for even six months and that the people should not live a fearful life. “We know that the pandemic will rise in the days to come and unfortunately more deaths will take place, but simultaneously we have to provide earning facilities to the poor and working class,” he added.

He said: “Data and modelling have not shown any evidence that the disease will spread so rapidly that the health system will collapse. Things are still under control.”

Economic implications

Endorsing the PM’s strategy to ease lockdown restrictions, Mr Umar said: “Prime Minister Imran Khan had foreseen the impact of a lockdown in the country on poor people two months ago while many countries are coming to the same realisation now.”

The former finance minister explained that Russia, India and other countries, which were reaching the peak of the virus spread, were easing lockdowns because of the economic implications. Lockdown was not a permanent solution to the Covid-19 issue because reverse attack of the pandemic had been witnessed in some countries like in [Wuhan, the epicentre of the viral disease in China], North Korea and Singapore. “If a lockdown could have ended the virus, it would have been proven by at least one country,” he said.

Pakistan had pandemic experts, artificial intelligence specialists and data scientists on board and the government made decisions after consulting them, he said, adding that the government had identified more than 500 areas in the country as virus hotspots and action had been taken to put them under quarantine.

The minister said the country’s testing capacity had also been increased. “Initially, we had only two coronavirus testing labs in the country in the month of March but now we have 70 labs,” he said, adding that during the past 24 hours, more than 13,000 tests had been conducted.

Mr Umar’s views were supported by Dr Fehmida Mirza, who said the lockdown was imposed as a “breather” to improve the country’s health structure, social safety nets and economic indicators. “Now we are in a better position to combat Covid-19 with better health and social welfare facilities and economic strategies,” she added.

‘Cooperative federalism’

Ms Mirza highlighted the need for what she called cooperative federalism in which both the opposition and government could work together to face national disasters.

Earlier, former planning minister and lawmaker of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz Ahsan Iqbal criticised the government and the prime minister for presenting no “strategy” to combat Covid-19 and called the prime minister “incapable” to run the government. “If he is inexperienced, it is not a bad thing because inexperienced people can learn, but incapable people don’t,” he said.

“What is the strategy of this government and no policy has been presented before parliament even three months after the first case emerged in the country,” he said, criticising the government for not working with federating units.

Pakistan Peoples Party lawmaker Shazia Marri criticised the government for sending “mixed messages” about coronavirus and urged it to “build a clear narrative” so that people could take the virus seriously.

She said the government should act like a government and not a spectator.

Later, the session was prorogued.

Apart from that you have lower income and money for both small businesses and laid off workers, which leads to less ability to spend on medical procedures, be it biopsies or preventive surgeries

The government will have to seriously think about UBI scheme for every adult in Pakistan. Instead of needlessly building flyovers and such projects, the government needs to spend that money on people so they don’t die of hunger during a pandemic.

Prime Minister Imran Khan on Thursday reiterated that Covid-19 pandemic is a global problem that requires a global solution, urging the developed world to "put their minds together".

The premier was addressing a virtual United Nations event on Financing for Development in the Covid-19 era and Beyond. The event was hosted by the UN secretary general and the Canadian and Jamaican prime ministers.

Addressing the event via video link, Imran said that when Pakistan imposed lockdown measures to curb the spread of the virus, everything came to standstill, as it did in most economies of the world.

"When everything came to a standstill, the biggest issue for us was how to look after the most vulnerable section of our population, and the people affected in the non-formal sector of our economy.

"Out of a population of 220 million, almost 150 million are counted among the most vulnerable section [...] non-formal sector, daily wagers, weekly wagers, whose families are dependent on them earning money so that they could eat."

Talking about the Ehsaas programme, the premier said: "[Therefore] we started this cash handout programme, one of the biggest in Pakistan's history. We doled out $8 billion to stimulate our economy and to give cash to the most vulnerable section of our society.

"But the problem was and the problem is, that we have falling exports and remittances. We had big, ambitious plans to revive our tourism sector and all this took a nose dive."

He added that while these problems have been faced by most countries, the developing world has taken a larger hit.

"To put things into perspective, the total amount of stimulus we could afford to give to our economy — which was the biggest stimulus ever in our history — we managed to give $8 billion."

He maintained that when compared with the stimulus packages of other developed countries, the developing world has only given $7 trillion to stimulate their economies.

"We don't have the fiscal space to revive our economy, to look after the most vulnerable section of our society.

"In Pakistan's case, we have this huge, ambitious programme of fighting climate change by planting 10 billion trees. All this money [was] diverted into dealing with the effects of the coronavirus lockdown.

He added that when he spoke to the leaders of Ethiopia, Nigeria and Egypt, he was informed that the countries were facing problems similar to those being faced by Pakistan.

"Therefore, I really welcome the G20's initiative," Imran said, talking about the grouping's decision to include all countries under the World Bank’s International Development Association (IDA) to be eligible for debt relief.

"But bear in mind, this has to be thought through [...] I'm afraid it has to be much bigger than is so far being envisaged.

"You have the developed world with 1.5 billion people, but the developing world with a population of six billion people.

"Unless the problem is dealt with holistically as a global problem with global solutions, the world is not going to recover from this recession if the bigger part of the world's population is wallowing in poverty."

Concluding his address, the prime minister urged the UN secretary general and the Canadian and Jamaican prime ministers to "pursue these initiatives".

"It is very important that the world that became insular when the pandemic hit, it's very important that the world now looks at this whole issue globally.

"If developed countries put their minds together and treat this as a global situation, I think we will all come out of it unscathed. Right now things look bleak, but if we treat it as a global issue the world will come out of it."

Nothing more annoying than when privileged middle and upper classes rant about how a stricter lockdown needs to be enforced and that everyone needs to stay at home, completely overlooking the millions of poorer families who rely on regular work just to feed their families.

Just glad IK is at least thinking of them.

Majority of them are daily wagers with large families where one is feeding a family of 8-10 people living in atrocious conditions.

The ones ranting are those who's businesses have been affected like many other countries worldwide which is again something that can't be reversed either.

People wither and either way won't be happy no matter what the government does.

I suppose a full lockdown like what India did originally could have been better because we all know the state of government hospitals in Pakistan which are over flowing right now with people being sent back without even getting checked.

He clearly mentioned individuals who violate social distancing sop

Everyone, including labourers, should get equal opportunities to work and earn. And everyone can adjust and re adjust work routines. No one should play a victim card for their laziness.

Everyone adjusted when work place environment specifications and subsequent requirements were introduced. No reason why this cant be done now. Re adjusted work routines will increase the over all costs but there is no excuse to violate social distancing.

Majority is right from both school of thoughts but few miscreants from both sides make it tough for majority to defend. No one should be denied to earn a livelihood but no one should be allowed to violate sop.

Try maintaining social distancing (hands with glove changes) at a construction site and than we'll talk

Bro I have been using PPE for almost 03 months and a medic's PPE is more extensive, heavier and limits mobility way more than a labourer's. It was unimaginable before but not a headache now. Construction bosses can do it for their employees but they don't want to spend on labour who unfortunately is a punching bag for both parties.

What you're seeing is people of privilege talking. Lockdown has been and will be an unmitigated disaster in third world countries.

Many people were saying this since Day 1 but were shouted down by upper middle class types (ones who can work from home on full salary), and wanted a Wuhan style lockdown in 3rd world countries. They themselves would tsk-tsk about the poor people dying on the roads and without work, and then post pics of how they are working from home, and lecturing in FB about "positives of lockdown", such as the "oh look, nature is taking back the roads, look at all these cute animals"

Its one thing when you are NZ, where you can have a lockdown after few cases, and can effectively root it out by locking down for a few weeks. And of course there is plenty of govt support for people

Its another thing if you are South Africa where you have the worlds toughest lockdown with even buying cigs and waking not allowed, and after few weeks of that, the president says the situation is now going to get much worse and lot more people are going to die after lifting the lockdown ...

If you had laws, that for every month in lockdown, govt workers, teachers, journalists, etc would all get huge salary cuts , you would suddenly see the media talk against such lockdowns

We can't afford to go back to another lockdown: PM Imran

Prime Minister Imran Khan said that the country cannot afford to go back towards a lockdown, urging the public to follow the government's standard operating procedures (SOPs) for curbing the spread of the virus.

"It is important for you to ensure that people follow SOPs because we can't go back to lockdown, this country cannot afford it," he said while addressing the volunteers of the Corona Relief Tiger Force.

"If we can slow down the [infection] curve because of SOPs, it will reduce pressure on hospitals."

He added that the country was already emerging from a difficult situation before the pandemic hit. "The purpose of reopening industries was to help the vulnerable. A lockdown for [the privileged] is not a problem, but it is a problem for the working class.

"How much more money can Ehsaas give? That is why important for you to ensure the implementation of SOPs," he said.

Pakistan has suffered Rs2.5tr loss because of Covid-19

Pakistan is estimated to have faced an economic loss of up to Rs2.5 trillion because of the Covid-19 pandemic in the current fiscal year.

This was the near-consensus reached by various international lending agencies and different arms of the government attending a meeting presided over by Adviser to the Prime Minister on Finance and Revenue Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh.

They also agreed that the pandemic would have a spillover impact in the next fiscal year.

Yes yes I know. If Pakistan would have dealt with this pandemic efficiently, it would have been down to the brilliant leadership of Imran Khan.

Now that Pakistan has suffered because of his blunders especially his incapability to control the mullahs, PTI cult-followers are deflecting all the blame on PMLN and PPP.

8.000 people die every day in Pakisan. The number of Covid-19 deaths are nothing compared to that.

Perhaps you should focus more on why and how 8.000 people die each day in Pakistan.

Or is that OK?

It is not okay. The main point is, COVID-19 is contagious, those who are infected, infect many others! As you would know, hunger is not contagious!

Hong Kong has banned all Pakistanis from entering the city not because people are dying from hunger in Pakistani but because they are dying from COVID-19.

A COVID-19 patient impacts other people while a hungry patient has zero impact on others around him/her. It is pretty easy to understand!

I guess living in HK means you lost sight of the ground reality of Pakistan. For a country like Pakistan its impossible to go in lockdown mode for too long. It will and has already created huge issues. So far the number of deaths are really low. In order to fight this virus you need to have a certain basics covered, like clean water. Having access to clean water is not common for many many Pakistanis.

People sitting behind a laptop and coming with points is easy but the major part of Pakistanis is worried about getting food on the table every single evening.

Why is this guy concerned with Modi’s India?

In fact irony is that he is talking about smart lockdown but what is happening in India or rest of the world is called smart lockdown where they are gradually opening each industry one by one after strict guidelines.

It’s not the same as state governments panicking and trying to lockdown but since day 1 Imran has been against it. So it’s not like he asked for any lockdown since day 1.

Are we saying he figured something out that rest of the world didn’t?

Yes the migrant labor issue happened in India due to the lockdown and sure the government should have been more proactive. That’s a gap and they deserve criticism. However not a single person in even India is saying lockdown is a bad idea poor or not.

Why is this guy so obsessed?

He is brilliant leader best since the Quaid but can you explain how PK has suffered anymore than any others. The virus will spread because PK's will not listen, even if they closed the Mosques it would have eventually spread, Brazil and America don't have many mosques but it has spread even with lockdowns and without.

He is the most incompetent leader in Pakistan’s history. However, the establishment is grooming Shahid Afridi as their next puppet who will surpass Imran Khan in buffoonery since his IQ is even lower.

The notion that the virus will eventually spread anyway is embarrassing. By that logic, we should not have any sort of lockdown at all, so why have the so-called “smart” lockdown? Why not reopen schools, colleges and universities and have everything go back to the pre-COVID days since the virus will spread anyway?

A complete lockdown is the only effective solution to curbing the spread of this virus. However, it is true that heavily populated countries like Pakistan cannot afford a complete lockdown. But that by no means justifies not putting a ban on congregational prayers.

Pakistanis do not listen but that does not mean that you increase their chances of catching the virus by allowing them to go to mosques on Friday and Eid which are extremely, extremely high risk. There is a reason why Muslim countries around the globe have banned prayers - their leadership is not afraid of the mullahs who do not function as a state within the state.

The numbers have spiked in the last two weeks because of Imran Khan’s two major blunders: Lifting the smart (read: dumb) lockdown in the last week of Ramzan allowing people to go crazy with Eid shopping and his inability to control the mullahs and ban Eid prayer.

As far as the death rate in Pakistan is concerned, it is important to understand that as the numbers increase the ratio of deaths are also going to increase unless the government is able to convince the 32,000+ recovered patients to donate blood since plasma therapy is the most effective available treatment that results in the patient’s oxygen saturation level going up from below 60 to 90+ within 3-4 hours.

Imran Khan has badly failed and has proved to be one of the worst leaders during this pandemic.

Some very valid points here. I got few questions. Do you feel there is an actual plan in curbing the virus by Imran Khan? If current situation continues will there be a chance for the virus to peak at some point with less and less people being infected each day? Last question, how are the doctors holding up during these tried times? Like is the pressure of dealing with so many patients piling up?

Imran Khan is completely clueless and has no idea what he is doing. He has ignored the advice of doctors throughout the last few months and continues to shoot from the hip. The only thing that he has been right about so far is that a complete lockdown would collapse the country. However, he has been wrong about everything else.

Throughout the pandemic, he has spread false, ill-informed opinions that have completely contradicted the WHO recommendations. He lifted the dumb lockdown right before Eid knowing fully well that most of the eid shopping happens in the last week of Ramzan. Did he really think that easing restrictions at that point would not cause a spike?

He is still stuck in the 1992 World Cup mindset and created this Tigers Force gimmick who have achieved nothing so far, and now that he has run out of ideas, he has declared that everyone on his own and people have to take care of themselves. That is his plan to curb the virus after all this time.

Furthermore, very little is being done on the ground level to force the people to follow SOPs. I live in Peshawar and the vast majority of people walk around with no masks and do not care about social distancing yet the police take little notice.

The other day, I went to collect test results from Shaukat Khanum laboratory and the workers were sitting without masks. In fact, a lot of drug stores employees are not wearing masks either, so what can you expect from the general public who still think that this virus is a mere drama?

The only work that is being done at some level is by the district management (Additional Commissioners, Deputy Commissioners) who are largely operating at their discretion rather than clear, non-negotiable instructions of the government).

In fact, what do you expect from the illiterate public when your PM is walking around with a mask while everyone around him has the sense to wear one. After all this time, our PM still doesn’t realize that he might consider himself invincible to the virus, but by not wearing a mask, he is putting other people at risk. How does he expect people to listen to him when he doesn’t want to lead by example?

If current situation continues will there be a chance for the virus to peak at some point with less and less people being infected each day?

That is what the world is hoping for at this point and that will happen eventually because it is not possible to ‘break the chain’ without a complete lockdown. Eventually, when about ~70% are infected and herd immunity is developed, the virus will phase out. However, it will most likely take about 1-2 years and one can only imagine the amount of deaths and the overall damage that would happen by then.

Last question, how are the doctors holding up during these tried times? Like is the pressure of dealing with so many patients piling up?

Absolutely. For most doctors, this is the most challenging period of their careers so far because most of us are not trained and equipped on how to deal with a pandemic which will hopefully change in the post-COVID world. Like most jobs, doctors also develop a routine where a lot of things happen mechanically. Here, there is a lot of out of the box thinking and people are being pushed to the limits.

In Peshawar, doctors are divided into groups of 5 who are all present in the COVID isolation wards. In addition to looking after the patients, they also have to give real time feedback on WhatsApp to another doctor who records everything in the hospital database.

So you not only have to look after the patients, you also have to communicate on WhatsApp at the same time and make sure that you do not make any mistakes because the information that you provide is then used by the group of 5 who will take over from you and vice versa.

It is also very challenging because you often do not know what to do and what point and are taking arrows in the dark, knowing fully well that one mistake and you could cost someone his/her life, not to mention the fact that you are constantly exposed to something that could potentially kill you and your family.

Furthermore, there have been multiple instances of aggressive behavior from the patients who are under immense mental trauma since getting admitted for COVID is perceived by them as a death sentence.

Another challenge for the doctors is the decision to admit someone or send them home for self-isolation is down to the discretion of doctors who measure the symptoms of an individual on a scorecard. If you pass a certain number, you will be admitted. There is a good chance of misinterpreting symptoms and sending home someone who should ideally have been admitted, and with the number of cases rising rapidly and the hospitals running out of space, more and more critical patients are being sent home to die.

Having said that, there are also doctors who are unfortunately milking the pandemic. Doctors are getting attention for the first time and some are making sure that they fully capitalize on the pandemic. Writing long sympathy-seeking posts on social media and referring to themselves as “frontline warriors” is something that should be avoided and discouraged.

On leaders-Your the guy that told how good NS was until you realised he was a crook, then you moved to Maryam and realised she was also crooked and then you put faith in SS and then came the TTS and you changed to Billo and then came Billo and he was caught with his pants down over the omni group and his relationship with Diesel, so you telling us a what good leader is like trusting blind man with his description of the Mona Lisa.
For a start a lockdown works if you have the means to make it work and people following the instructions. We don't have either, PK is a poor country and doesn't have the resources, your friends in the PPP couldn't even feed the people for 2 weeks and when the SC came up, blatantly lied about the 8bn, suddenly when asked to show the receipts couldn't provide a single receipt and ended blatant lying and provided out of date rations.
It's the job of the govt to provide unbiased information to help the public to make informed decisions, it can't force people to act in certain ways if they don't want. For example it can force them to wear masks but if they don't wash hands and don't care about social distancing sooner or later we are back to virus spreading. I think that opening Mosques was a mistake but here in the UK the virus cases have still been high in some areas after 9 weeks of lockdown. That tells you that it comes down to the people and their attitude.

The death rate will sadly reach around 50,000 in PK, and I don't think outside a total lockdown for 3 months, that would have been any different.
Its so sad that you haven't changed with your bitterness even doing some great work. If IK has failed then so has everyone else.

Imran Khan is completely clueless and has no idea what he is doing. He has ignored the advice of doctors throughout the last few months and continues to shoot from the hip. The only thing that he has been right about so far is that a complete lockdown would collapse the country. However, he has been wrong about everything else.

This is also the case in the UK, mostly because there has been a severe shortage of medical grade masks available. The govt ministers are still appearing in public without masks over here same as workers and shop staff that you mentioned in Pakistan. In fact there is still a debate over here whether masks are helpful or hindrance depending on working environment so it isn't as simple as you make it seem.

Imran Khan is right. the country cant afford another lockdown.

The economy has already been damaged enough. You have to roll the dice and see what happens. Most likely the risk from reopening the country will be low. The virus has been greatly exaggerated.

We all know what the culture is like in pakistan.
My last visit to peshawar airport two years ago, at luggage claim it was a battle with pushing and shoving.

These are the people, that you think will follow SOPs?

It will take police with big dandas it would be the only way to enforce it.

Extended lockdown in a country with tens of millions that are poverty stricken.

There would be riots.

Here in canada, we are under lockdown in name only, most businesses are operating even if mostly online or with certain restrictions. The thing is, people here will actually follow SOPs.

Many countries are opening up again, as they are all thinking the same way that covid19 is here to stay and cant shut countries down for a year until vaccine comes out (which may not even happen).

The effectiveness of masks cannot be gauged for certain. However, what is 100% certain is that even the lowest quality masks provide better protection than not wearing any type of masks. That is why it is imperative that every person who has access to masks should wear them, and it is utterly idiotic to see the PM and other ministers not wear one.

As far as the availability of masks are concerned, I don’t know about the UK, but in Peshawar, simple medical masks are easily available in any pharmacy/drugstore and they usually have more than 50 pcs on hand at any given time. These masks cost only Rs. 20/- so there is no excuse for people who strut around not wearing one.

Wearing masks is particularly important in highly populated countries like Pakistan where it is rarely possible to maintain social distancing.

Marriyum Aurangzeb says PM Imran 'needs to come out of smart lockdown, elite lockdown arguments'

PML-N leader and spokeswoman Marriyum Aurangzeb has said that Prime Minister Imran Khan needs to come out of "arguments on smart lockdown, elite lockdown and curfew".

In a statement, she said: "Imran Khan should not put the blame for his own incapability and inefficiency on the coronavirus pandemic. [Imran Khan's] attempt to hide his own confusion by talking about lockdown in different sectors could prove dangerous for the country."

She criticised the premier for his response to the pandemic, saying that his "denial of the virus was proving dangerous for the nation and the country".

Prime Minister Imran Khan on Thursday warned that strict action will now be taken against those found to be violating the government's standard operating procedures (SOPs) for curbing the spread of the coronavirus, adding that he will be monitoring the situation from the Prime Minister's Office.

Pakistan currently ranks among the top 10 countries in the world reporting the highest number of new cases of Covid-19, according to the World Health Organisation. The international body has advised the government to enhance daily testing capacity to 50,000 to assess the actual prevalence of coronavirus across the country.

In his address to the nation about the country's coronavirus situation, the premier detailed the steps the government will now take to address the growing number of cases.

The premier said that he will now begin receiving daily reports from the provinces regarding the implementation of SOPs.

"Today I have a report from Punjab and Sindh regarding the implementation of SOPs. These reports detail the steps taken by mosques, courts, public offices, public parks, industries, shopping malls, local and private transport.

"I will get these reports daily and on the basis of these, the administration and the Corona Relief Tiger Force will take action. When we will be informed of violations, we will close them down. The purpose of a 'smart lockdown' is to shut down areas where the virus spreads."

The premier issued a warning that whether it be a shop, a mall or a factory, if they are caught flouting rules they will be closed down.

"We didn't enforce this strictly before because we were still gathering data. But now that it is in our hands, we will take action."

He also announced that the government is in the process of preparing a special package for healthcare workers.

"To my doctors, nurses and paramedical staff, I want to say that we know it is a difficult time, but you are doing God's work."

Prime Minister Imran acknowledged that the fatalities will increase but added that the death rate in Pakistan from the virus was among the world's lowest. "Less than one per cent of patients [...] these are those that are aged or have underlying conditions such as blood pressure or diabetes.

"Other than that, I want to say to my health workers that think of this as a jihad. The government is ready to extend all the necessary facilities to you and will introduce a special package."

Further, the government will also deploy data managers at all hospitals in the country to give continuous feedback, he said. "We can't take the right steps until the data or the information we are receiving is incorrect."

The premier urged the public to strictly follow SOPs. "By doing this, the country can be saved from the danger of cases increasing exponentially [...] we will be able to cope.

"I say this with a heavy heart that the public is showing a lot of carelessness [...] this way of thinking is dangerous."

The premier reiterated that the government expects cases to peak in July, adding that the public must now consider taking precautionary measures their "duty".

"On behalf of my team and health workers, I urge you to think of SOPs as a duty which can save the lives of others. The lives of people suffering from blood pressure, diabetes and the elderly will be in peril if we don't take precautionary measures.

"I will monitor this, and I am hopeful that if we begin taking precautionary measures from here on out, we can avoid a difficult situation."

He lauded his team for its handling of the coronavirus outbreak, saying he was proud of how the situation was tackled.

PM lashes out at opposition

At the onset, the prime minister lashed out at the opposition, saying it appeared they "wanted more Covid-19 deaths and the economy to fail" so that they could have a reason to criticise the government.

"The country was facing difficult times, but I felt as though they wanted to cash in on that. As coronavirus deaths are increasing, they are saying that the government's policies are incorrect, it is confused and doesn't know what to do."

He said he was glad that his government didn't succumb to the pressure, adding that the country was "saved because a complete and extended lockdown" was not enforced.

how many people are we now testing per day on average?

Prime Minister Imran Khan has rejected a proposal regarding imposing a complete lockdown in Punjab, reiterating it will disproportionately affect the poor.

PM Imran was addressing media in Lahore on Saturday, after chairing a meeting regarding the coronavirus measures taken in the province.

The government decided in the meeting against the imposition of a complete lockdown and agreed to ensure a strict implementation of the SOPs whereby masks will be mandatory for everyone and strict action will be taken if complaints of violations of safety protocols are received..

The premier said there was a prevailing impression that a complete lockdown is being imposed in Lahore and rejected any possibility of such a measure.

“Imposing a lockdown means shutting down the economy,” he said.

The prime minister said that a "smart lockdown" will be imposed instead, under which hotspots will be identified and closed off.

PM Imran said that the Corona Relief Tiger Force will recruit more volunteers and assist the government in ensuring the rules are being followed.

The premier said that a "smart lockdown" is the only option for the country, and that if Pakistan were a rich country then imposing a lockdown would have been an option.

“New York’s mayor, the city which wealthiest in the world, is saying that it is going bankrupt,” said the prime minister, adding that if such a disastrous situation is prevailing in the US city, "then what could happen in Pakistan?"

He regretted that people were not taking the outbreak seriously.

"I am sorry to say that people are just not following SOPs. They think that there is no such thing as coronavirus and they don't know anyone who contracted the disease. People think nothing will happen to them," he said.

The prime minster warned that if the SOPs are not followed, the country will undergo a very tough phase.

“If we are permitting you to resume activities then it is your responsibility to follow the guidelines,” he said.

Declaring facemasks mandatory for everyone, the premier warned that strict action against those flouting the rules will be taken.

The prime minister said that the government is expecting July to be a difficult month.

“I will also visit the other provinces. From now onward, I will be personally monitoring the situation and checking for compliance on the SOPs from the PM Office,” said the premier, adding that he will also take input from the Tiger Force regarding the situation on the ground.

Overview of Punjab's situation
Presenting an overview of the situation in Punjab, provincial health minister Dr Yasmin Rashid said that about 40% capacity is available across the province.

About 10,000 beds are available which have been set aside for coronavirus patients, she said. She also said 502 high dependency bed units are available.

Around 3,055 people are currently under treatment for COVID-19, of which 215 are critical and 193 are on ventilators.

She said a total of 540 ventilators had been set aside for COVID-19 patients, so the remaining are still available.

"We should be okay for the next week or ten days if people exercise caution," she said.

She said that the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) will arrange an extra 1,000 beds equipped with oxygen supply.

Speaking about ventilator availability in Lahore, says that a total of 197 ventilators were allotted for COVID-19 patients in public hospitals and 104 in private facilities.

Currently, 63 are available in public hospitals and 72 in private hospitals, she said.

The minister also spoke about the drug Actemra for which trials will be carried out. She said that earlier the drug could only be imported from Japan, but now the drug regulatory authority has allowed for it to be imported from the US as well.

She said the prime minister had approved an initial trial of 1,000 doses.

Rashid also warned against the black market sale of the drug — mentioning that reports of such sales had been received — and cautioned against self-prescribing it as may prove lethal for patients, especially who have septicaemia or tuberclosis.

She said that the government will take action against those hoarding the drug to sell it at higher rates.

So if he is going to impose a ‘smart’ lockdown again, what was the point of getting rid of the ‘smart’ lockdown in the last week of Ramzan and allowing the virus to spread like wildfire?

What a weak and incompetent leader.

‘We need to be strict now,’ Imran Khan.

This is so funny that it is not funny anymore. The country has become a joke!

If he cares so much about the poor then why are normal 3 filter surgical masks being sold at varied prices ranging from Rs 30 to Rs 50 per mask? When the same masks used to be 3 rupees per mask back in the day?

Why is the government allowing export of masks, PPE and sanitizers when they have been priced upwards of 1000% of what they used to be?

What is his govt doing about people selling plasmas, and selling life saving medicines and injections in Lakhs?

People are resorting to no masks or cloth based mask because they cannot afford buying 30 rupees mask daily. Why not give out masks?

I have been reusing the same mask i have had since 3 months ago. I wash it handsoap and sanitize it every week. No need to buy masks frequently.

Wildfire?

Please doc let us know if the total covid 19 deaths in all these months are more then 8.000 deaths per day in Pakistan?

I’m talking about the spread of the virus and not deaths. Please check the rate at which the number of positive cases have increased after Imran’s genius plan of lifting the lockdown before Eid.

I have been reusing the same mask i have had since 3 months ago. I wash it handsoap and sanitize it every week. No need to buy masks frequently.

3 months is excessive. You should change masks every 3 weeks.

Also, disinfect it by dipping it in diluted dettol for about half an hour and dry it in the sun which is a natural disinfectant.

Don’t ask tough questions. You will be reminded about the current account deficit and the corruption of PMLN and PPP.

So after the smart lockdown flop show, our PM has come up with a new type of lockdown called selective lockdown.

So what are the differences between a smart lockdown and a selective lockdown?

Also, on a scale of 1-10, how clueless is Imran right now?

[MENTION=1269]Bewal Express[/MENTION] [MENTION=138254]Syed1[/MENTION]

So what is the difference between a smart lockdown and a selective one? How many types of lockdowns does our genius PM have up his sleeve?

Estimated 30-40 per cent of hospitals vacant across Punjab: Yasmin Rashid

Punjab Health Minister Dr Yasmin Rashid, meanwhile, said that an estimated 30-40 per cent of hospital facilities across Punjab were currently vacant.

Another day, another lie by Yasmin Rashid. The incompetence and clueless of the government has reached a point where the PM and the Health Ministers have no choice but to resort to lies and fabrications.

It does work to an extent because cult-followers will believe anything that comes out of their mouth.

As long people don't accept that they are responsible for following the advice the virus will spread.. Bar you a supporter of the corrupt and evil PPP and Nooras no one else cares for words. It means the same things with a maybe a slight difference on some things.

Smart lockdown would have been more effective if the awam were smart enough to follow the SOPs. Lockdown had to be eased for late Ramadhan, as many traders rely heavily on the late Ramdhan sales due to Eid festival. It is easy for us to say lockdown should have never been removed, as we have spare income to survive without income for many months.

Yes Imran Khan has not been smart in a lot of decisions and trust you me, his followers are his biggest critics.

What do you think a Nawaz Shareef or a Zardari would have done? (Please also provide previous genius achievements as examples of these leaders just so that i can gauge their intelligence levels when comparing to Imran Khan).

I don’t know what they would have done, but I do know that if they would have done the exact same as Imran, the PTI supporters who are now praising/defending Imran would have criticized them.

Agreed. The only thing different is here is that PTI supporters (at least majority of them) do not blindly support Imran Khan. May we find solace and get a leader who all of us can mutually back.

Would be nice though if you occasionally also post in threads which criticise PPP and PMNL :)

Actually that is not true. Majority of PTI supporters (especially the ones who live outside Pakistan) are brainwashed cult-followers who would believe Imran if he told them that the earth is flat.

I know it's given you a drum to beat but the reality is that PK people find it impossible to listen unless they see it with their own eyes. The rise was inevitable and just like here in the UK and elsewhere more will die. IK warned people over and over again since March that if you follow the advice it won't spread, but I remember talking to people in Ramadan in PK, and they told me it was a scam, so people have to own their actions.

SS and NS has been in power for at 20 +years of the last 30 years in Punjab, where were the questions on health and beds then. If there is a bed shortage look at your friends that preferred to steal with TTS and flats then build up health infrastructure.

Nah that aint true. I am a Pakistani living in England and I and most of my friends have been PTI supporters. Nowadays all we do is exchange criticism on Imran Khan in our whatapp messages. After all there is no-one else left to criticise and we have had enough of Imran Khan’s U turns.

For someone that has defended every single action of the evil PPP and Nooras, calling anyone a cult follower is not just pathetic, it shows a total lack of morals and awareness.

Then I must congratulate you and your friends because it is not easy to be an overseas PTI supporter and still retain your ability to think.

The blunder of easing restrictions in the last week of Eid is entirely on Imran. That idiotic decision has spread the virus like wildfire over the last 3 weeks and there is no point in deflecting the blame onto the public.

Yes the people of Pakistan are careless and a lot of them still do not appreciate the existence of COVID, but Imran was fully aware of this but he still went ahead and eased restrictions in the busiest week of the year.

As i said and you avoided the question every time. Who is a bigger cult member you or us. You support 2 parties that have killed opponents, killed journalists that oppose them and have stolen trillions. We support someone that is a patriot, tell us who fits the definition of a cult member.

And I don't accept that, the spread was inevitable because people do not listen. If people listen and don't turn everything into conspiracy theory there would be a slower spread. But even then it would just spread later as the lockdown is impossible. People have to own their actions.

Of course you don’t accept that. You would believe Imran if he told you that he has been sent from the heavens.

The CM told us that the Sindh lockdown would continue as was his right under the 18th Amendment, so unless you have comparative figures showing one worked and the other the didn't , you are again talking rubbish again.
