"I don't think we need to press the panic button" : Sarfaraz Ahmed

Its all well and good to chase a 270 odd in a bilateral game against the WI, but if you can't do that on a regular basis, then you will never be able to compete against the top teams, regardless of how good the bowling is

Whether Malik, Sarf or any other captain, we are factually poor chasers and that will not change overnight no matter who the captain is... can't fault the bowling line for tying the opposition in a semi final, every one dreams of a bowling performance in a semis like this

In the 3rd ODI against the NZ, Pakistan got NZ restricted to a 250 score, in reply we bundled out to a score of 75 with Trent boult wreaking havoc through our defence. The problems if you look at it are the same for what they have been for a while. A team lacking a culture of chasing runs professionally.

It is not about deflecting criticism. The simple question is have we progressed as a limited over team since Azhar Ali was captain or not? I think we have, but it is not as big as we were made out to be before the tournament started. We started off with the favorites tag... and having tied down the opposition for 240 you would think you had one leg in the final. Alas the pressure of chasing came down on us, the 240 became a 300 for us... like it has always been.. We are still weak chasers in 2018

Not sure what you're trying to get at. If we have been better without Azhar, that doesn't mean it is because of Sarfraz. It has not. It's other players who have done well.

There's this odd correlation with captaincy and success.

This is a fallacy.

Good teams win matches, captaincy is overrated.

Spot on brother. Today's cricket is all about everyone contributing. You can't make a case for a passenger player as captain.

It could be a fallacy, I have yet to see a team succeed that has 11 captains playing for them. Recipe for disaster. Seen that in the 90s. 1996 world cup was a prime example for us.

Wrong.

On two counts.

240 to 250 is a winning total in UAE 75 percent of the time.

They got 240 after being 12/3 which shows more about the captain than anyone else.

Both those things put Bangladesh in the driving seat.

Had it been 270 target, it would be 100 percent win for Bangladesh.

Yes!!! We are really doing well. As long as we are among 15 in ranking no need to worry about.

It was back in the 90s, not now, I haven't seen the stats, but in bilaterals we have seen 280s being scored and chased here.. Pakistan's highest run chase in Abu Dhabi was 289. Pakistan being a consistent team playing in the UAE for 10 years, and an annual PSL tournament cannot excuse ruling out chasing 240 when teams like Hong Kong can score 260 against an Indian bowling line while chasing 280...

Yeah, no need to panic now. Lets do it when we get our a$$ whooped in the initial games of the worldcup and fail to make it to the knockout stage.

Again, you kind of just made up what I was talking about.

Captaincy is overrated, talent wins you matches.

You think IK was the reason we won in 92 due to captaincy? It played a part, maybe, but we had a bunch of pretty much top 10-15 all time Pakistani players as well.

And the 96 captain was also the same 99 captain who ran into maybe the best cricket team that ever existed, so the captain clearly wasn't the issue. They just had a bad performance against India from top to bottom and were knocked out early. JM had one of the worst performances of his career. The bowling wasn't great, sure, but it was still an attainable total.

Having a good team is more important than captaincy. Captaincy has its role, but 9/10 I will take the talented team, over the one with the better on the field leader, and in the case of Sarfraz, he is neither good or a good leader.

I think Sarfarz is right in that we don't need to press the panic button. There's a lot about the way he does things (i.e. his weak press conferences & behavior on the field towards his teammates) that I don't like, but I do think he's working with the best of what Pakistani cricket has for talent.

It was a collective team failure and though it should not have happened, I can't help but feel that our team often is not mentally prepared for tournaments and puts pressure on itself by making statements they shouldn't be making. We seriously need a much better PR team that talks to these players to keep to themselves and their preparation. These same guys were batting pretty well this year and I have no doubt that they will fare better in the coming months. The bowling did lack zip and I am not really sure what the solution is. Do we try to unearth more bowlers?
