Former great Waqar Younis says Pakistan will not fear Steve Smith's team and that this summer is his country's best chance to record a historic series victory in Australia.

Pakistan have traditionally struggled on these shores with just four wins from 32 Tests, and none in the past 21 years, but meet an Australian side that has undergone massive change.

Misbah-ul-Haq's side is far more settled but arrived in Australia this week after a loss in a dead rubber to the West Indies and a 2-0 series defeat in New Zealand.

The defeats have dampened expectations for Pakistani success in the coming weeks but their form previously was good enough to suggest they should be more than competitive.

Pakistan climbed to the top of the Test rankings in August after a 2-2 result in England, where Australia had failed 12 months prior, but have slipped to fourth. Their failed campaign in New Zealand ended a run of seven unbeaten series but, Waqar believes, will serve as a "wake-up call".

Australia also have their share of problems, though eased somewhat by a face-saving victory against South Africa in the third Test. It is arguably the weakest Australian side to have faced Pakistan on home soil since the teams led by Graham Yallop and Kim Hughes in the aftermath of World Series in 1979.

"Fair enough they won against South Africa but there's definitely loopholes they can look into," former coach Waqar, who will be a guest commentator for Channel Nine during the series, said.

"Pakistan has been a very settled side the last couple of years, they've been playing really good cricket but they have to play to their potential.

"It's never easy in Australia on these bouncy pitches. I feel this is their best chance to beat Australia.

"In the past we always feared Australia are the better side playing in Australia - but not at the moment.

"I don't know what will happen in a couple of years, the Aussies always know how to bounce back but yes at the moment Pakistan stands a good chance."

Pakistan's strength is their attack, led by left-armer Mohammad Amir, who burst onto the world stage as a teenager before being convicted of spot fixing and jailed. Wahab Riaz showed his capabilities with his thrilling spell against Shane Watson in last year's World Cup but has been inconsistent in Tests.

Their star is leg-spinner Yasir Shah, who was rated the world's best Test bowler this year but was dropped in New Zealand due to the seam-friendly conditions.

"It's a new side and if Pakistan play to their potential and bowl well they've got a fair chance of picking up 20 wickets," Waqar said.

Pakistan crushed Australia 2-0 in 2014 in the Middle East but it will be a totally different game away from the dead tracks of their adopted home. Their poor effort with the bat in New Zealand has done little to inspire hope for their batting.

Asked who their key batsman was, Waqar quipped: "At the moment after what they've done in NZ it's hard to pick anyone."

Younis Khan, Pakistan's leading all time run-scorer, shapes as the key wicket but is coming off scores of two, one, two and 11.

"The NZ series is a big wake up call for them, being the No.1 team then losing like this I don't think it will sit well with them.

"That was a good preparation, there was some bounce and seam movement at Hamilton. I think they'll have learnt their lesson. There's still two weeks before the first Test so they should have enough time to get used to this bounce."

Play to their potential

How many times will we hear this?

He is Damn Right, We can beat this Australian team, if we play good cricket and batsmen put good totals. I seriously feel we can win this series.

Aus we'll be able to beat.

NZ was the toughest challenge for us in years because of green pitches.

It is a chance, but Australia won't be rollovers.

Waqar is not wrong here, but Pakistan needs to play good cricket to exploit Aus weakness of unsettled team. Pakistan themselves have lost the last 3 tests which included one in UAE against a team like WI. Pakistan almost lost another test against WI as well. In the last 2 series , Pakistan has been poor as well.

Pakistan has ruined the momentum gain last summer against England... WI series was not taken as seriously, they lost one match and almost lost another one against WI, we keep on insisting playing Nawaz for no reason, that was careless selection. In this series again, YK and Shafiq has been too poor, you cannot have two 50+ test Cap, main batsmen keep getting out in l0-15 balls in every innings...Both of them had more bad than good matches in last 3 series, youngsters(Sami and Babar) have performed far better than management trust them. YK was clearly out of depth in most of overseas matches, we will see more of that in AUS as well. Openers are doing their job, but middle order is collapsing even when they come to crease at 30 over mark, that is not acceptable.

Bowling is even bigger problem, which we could sense in England as well, Yasir gave us two some what unexpected wins, fast bowlers have to standup at some point, they are not there ATM. If you compare to Hazelwood and Strac, there is no match... Pakistan will find it hard to fetch wickets... SA won because Rabada put his heart out, plus main reason was SA conditions are very similar to AUS, its like playing at home, there bowlers knew what length to bowl at, there batsmen knew how to deal with bounce... Pakistani batsmen don't know how to deal with bounce, nobody plays pull/cut, they had hard time against Wagner, who only bowls at 135, Auses are 10 clicks faster then him...

I dont think personnel are the issue. I just get the feeling that the players have been a little to happy with themselves after the England tour. They were good enough to hold on against a resurgent windies, but paid the price for that complacency against New Zealand. Somehow the crown of favorites only makes us fail, rather than succeed. We go to Australia a little humbled, and I think this will help our results there.

Pakistan have always had their chances but they blew them up themselves and it won't be surprising at all if that happened again. The Aussie new boys Renshaw, Handscombe, Maddinson etc; would be licking their lips after watching the debuts Pakistan gave to Raval and Grandehomme.

We need to hold onto all of our catches and especially slip catches.

Ya Allah, Amir ka qasoor maaf karday, ameen.

Pakistan has a good chance to at least draw this series if Sami does not field in the slips.

Won't be easy at all. Australia knows they haven't performed well in the last couple of months. And they don't know when will they win their next away series. They will give it their all. Pakistan have a tough series ahead.

That is something I noticed a lot with test team (not so much in other formats) against WI, they were little too proud and thought that we can win just by been on the field, some of terror of our no 1 rank will scare WI

In NZ, as we saw in England, there are too many collapses in the middle...YK, Shafiq just get out too many times cheaply, not one off thing, that has to do with technique as much, they both are very vulnerable in the start and on testing conditions or under pressure, they will loose more often and Pakistan cannot afford that. Only hope is that wickets in AUS will not be that green (not sure about the D/N at GABBA though), that will help middle order, but bounce will cause problem with YK...Shafiq maybe able to thrive.

Aus do have a very weak side right now, but even if they didn't have Warner, Smith, Starc and Hazlewood, I don't think we could beat them.

i think we can give them a game. i woukd rather we didnt have a pink ball test though

No way pak going to win in Australia. .for that matter any Asian team..no Asian team has ever won a test series in Australia and this record will continue unabated

This is not a prediction thread

I don't rate warner at all. Hazelwood will be a big factor.

Win is not a big issue if Pakistan plays at its full capability and fearless cricket.
