Basseterre: India's senior-most speedster Ishant Sharma has done an honest introspection of his bowling and has come to a conclusion that he has not been upto the mark in limited overs cricket unlike longer version where he is the pace spearhead.

"You have to be honest to yourself and that makes it easier for you to accept things. I have to accept that I didn't do well in shorter formats. But I am doing well in Tests and so I know what my strengths are. It's important to know what your strengths are," Ishant told BCCI.TV a day after the two-day practice game.

Talking about strength, Ishant explained that it varies from player to player.

Bhuvi (Bhuvneshwar Kumar)'s strength is swing but he can't extract the bounce like I can do. Similarly, I can't get the ball to swing like Bhuvi, said Ishant, who has 201 wickets from 68 Test matches.

The lanky pacer stated that he is sharing his experiences with other pacers like Umesh Yadav, Bhuvneshwar, Shardul Thakur.

"I am sharing my experiences and hoping that what worked for me also work for them. But then they have to also identify their areas of strength."

Conditions in the Caribbean islands will be "challenging" as it will be "hot" and the "recovery" will be important for the pacers.

However Ishant said that flat pitches can't be an excuse for the pacers on just bowling right areas and depending on spinners.

"You have to have enough overs under your belt. You have to work hard enough even if conditions are not favourable. It is easy to give up and say there's nothing in the wicket so spinners will do the job and we will only try to hit the areas. It doesn't work like that. Specially for me, as I like to go flat out whether it is my second or third spell. I love to give my hundred percent."

It takes a great man to accept his flaws.

And a great piece of advice for all bowlers.

Learn from the master.

I hope WI pacers use this chance to pick Ishant's brain. His vast experience will help them develop better. I feel he is a generous guy who won't shy away from giving advice.

Everything he said in that article is true.

That is why I love Ishant.

Wins your heart on the field and off the field.

Honest talk from the great man.:wasim

On a serious note, he has improved massively in the past one or two years. Earlier Ishant used to be a spray gun bowling a lot of filth outside off stump or on the legs. But now he has learnt to control his line and doesn't give many runs nowadays even if he isn't picking wickets.

On honesty alone he is better than Wasim, Shoaib Akhtar, and Lillee.

Ishant is an impactful hard-working bowler who struggles to get enough wickets.

Averages 6 points less in ODI than Tests. Someone show him the numbers.

You wasn't good or you aren't good in shorter formats? :)

Though in Test, this dude is awesome.

What his average will be, if we remove that 30 runs off an over from his stat? Statsman

Lol. Won't make much difference.

In the last 2 years, he averages 27 in ODIs and 32 in tests which is not bad as per his standards.

He has been bowling well in tests in the last 3 or so years.. He's a big NO in shorter formats.. doesn't have the skills required. Always serves up length balls..

Dunno what game people watch sometimes. smh

It doesnt matter if his ODI average is few points better than his test average.

You actually see the impact. And he has a positive impact on the side in Tests in past couple years. He has found a niche which is serving him and india well

He would be branded as a world class test pacer if he played for us.

Though he is the equivalent of Shahadat Hossain in LOIs

Ishant has got more ODI wickets at a slightly better average than Wahab Riaz, both started round the same time :P

Somehow losing his massive inswing which he had as a weapon when he started has affected him as a bowler. Wish to see him to take wickets regularly and not go multiple innings , bowling well but with no wickets

LOL 115 wickets in 80 ODIs, average of 30.5, SR of 30 is equivalent of Shahadat Hossain?

I am not talking statistically here. Both are pretty much the same in shorter formats. Tall and bowls a plethora of length and short deliveries

He is useful in test matches and is the most reliable pacer right now in longer formats for us. Good that he knows his vulnerabilities in shorter formats, this way he can concentrate on a single format and end up surpassing Kapil Dev eventually!

Sharmaji had a very good two years preceding the ongoing one (by his standards).

At one point, he was leading the 5fers list for the pacers. But then Jimmy and Broad overtook the great man in this year:sree

continuing from where i left from in a different thread regarding SC names.

Sharma in Bangladesh is basically "Shorma" though written everywhere in English as "Sharma"

Sharma in bangla means a particular food item, where some stuffings are put into a roll made of paratha/nun. Yummy :shakib I love sharmas

The Man knows his stuff.

0/58
0/23
0/16
0/41

In his last 4 IPL games. And they keep picking him in the 11. wow!!!

The interview is pretty good he's seems like a down to earth honest guy.. People might make fun of him for being mediocre but atleast he is not like Shehzad or akmal who don't accept their flaws..

Too many Indians hate on him you know, quite surprised to see him play over 70+ Test matches, imagine he plays 100. I wonder how he declined.
