NAB gets 10-day remand of Fawad

ISLAMABAD: An accountability court in Islamabad on Wednesday remanded former federal minister Fawad Chaudhry in the custody of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) for 10 days in a case related to the alleged irregularities in the Jhelum to Pind Dadan Khan dual carriageway project.

NAB officials presented Fawad before Judge Muhammad Bashir after acquiring his custody from Adiala Jail, where he was presently incarcerated.

The NAB prosecutor told the court that on November 10, 2023, the inquiry of the project was started, but Fawad refused to be included in the investigation.

He further said Fawad, as a federal minister, “misused his influence” to have the PC-1of the project prepared.

The prosecutor also accused Fawad of charging a commission from the contractor of the project.

He requested the court to grant the physical remand of Fawad to the anti-graft body for 14 days so that the inquiry should be completed.

However, the judge only approved 10 days.

He seems also one of those people who are likely to stay in Jail till the upcoming general election.

I think he is the main cause of what's happening with PTI right now.

He played a role of "Phuppo" within a party.
I disagree. Ch Fwd was excellent as spokesman and that's why the mafia are so desperate for him to turn against IK. So far he has resisted in any meaningful way but very few can withstand the torture

An accountability court on Saturday reserved its decision over NAB inquiry in road project misappropriation case against Fawad Chaudhry, ARY News reported.

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has sought 10 days’ physical remand from the court in case pertaining to misappropriation in land procurement for Pind Dadan Khan Jhelum Road construction.

NAB investigation officer told the court that in 10 days’ physical remand relevant record and statements were verified.

“Bank records have been summoned in which some transactions have been suspicious and required investigation with Fawad Chaudhry,” IO said.

Seeking physical remand of four more days he said with this remand inquiry will be completed. “Contractor and XEN have been summoned in NAB on January 02,” he said. “Eight of 16 kanal land procured has been transferred in the name of Fawad Chaudhry,” he added.

The Judge questioned Fawad Chaudhry about NAB’s behaviour, ” Seeing various behaviours in year but the NAB’s behaviour was okay,” former minister replied.

He said that the road project was approved by provincial and federal governments, NAB could not open inquiry against government. “The ECNEC had passed the road project, the NAB is not authorized to open feasibility of an approved project,” Fawad Chaudhry said. “It was a project of FWO, and no tenders were issued for the road project,” he said.

“NAB claiming that five million were distributed in my family, I request discharge of this case,” he said.

“Five million rupees were received from the contractor as federal minister with the promise of awarding contract to him,” investigation officer said.

Defence lawyer Faisal Chaudhry said that the contractor has been summoned on Jan 02 while 10 days remand has been requested to the court. “Ten days’ remand is unnecessary”.

Fawad Chaudhry has been arrested on the inquiry stage, it is a bid to keep him out of elections, Faisal Chaudhry said.

Approval for Fawad's nomination papers withdrawn

RAWALPINDI: The order approving Fawad Chaudhary's nomination papers was withdrawn on Saturday after his wife was declared ineligible to contest elections for 'hiding facts', Express News reported.

The election tribunal, after confirming objections against Hiba Chaudhary concerning three undisclosed foreign trips and nine bank accounts, disqualified her from contesting elections in the Jhelum provincial constituency.

The rejection came after Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) presented records of Hiba's foreign trips, whereas the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) provided details of the bank accounts.

In light of these findings, Fawad also came under scrutiny for not disclosing the information in his nomination papers either. This resulted in the acceptance order issued for the former PTI leader's nomination papers for NA-60 and NA-61 being withdrawn.

The tribunal, issuing notices to Fawad Chaudhry for January 9, questioned "why should the former information minister not be disqualified for hiding facts?"

With the withdrawal of the approval for the nomination papers, the threat of disqualification looms large on Fawad's head

'Impulsive rejections'

Separately, some PTI leaders and other candidates received relief as appeals against the decisions of returning officers start being accepted.

Justice Adnan-ul-Karim Memon, addressing the eligibility of returning officers, remarked, "No one can be prevented from participating in elections based solely on preliminary proceedings. Candidates are being unjustly hindered from contesting elections knowingly."

"It seems the returning officer rejected nomination papers impulsively," Justice Memon stated,

In the Sindh High Court, appeals against the decisions of returning officers were heard for PTI's Subhan Sahil from NA-243, Amjad Afridi from NA-242, Hassan Chohan from PS-113, Makhdoom Fazal from Hala.

The tribunal also accepted appeals for PPP's Rauf Ahmed and independent candidate Raffia Hassan from PS-126, independent candidates Jamal ud Din and Dildar Ali from NA-237, and Fazal Zeshan from NA-237.

The tribunal also criticised the election commission's chief, stating, "How can we proceed when returning officers cannot accurately identify the facts even with the use of modern technology?" Justice Memon engaging in a conversation with candidates and lawyers, remarked, "Go, prepare for the election battle."

It seems this acceptance and rejection of the nomination papers will keep on going till the last minute.

He further pointed out the unjust rejection of his nomination papers and the acceptance of his brother’s documents, leading to his unwarranted inclusion as a co-accused in a National Accountability Bureau (NAB) case.

Fawad also criticized the Election Commission, saying it failed to fulfill its duties. Given these circumstances, he declared a complete boycott of the upcoming elections by his group.

It is pertinent to mention that Fawad Chaudhry is currently in NAB custody, facing corruption allegations related to a housing project in Jhelum.

IHC rejects Fawad's speedy bail plea

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has turned down a request seeking directions for a trial court to expeditiously decide a bail application submitted by former minister Fawad Chaudhry.

IHC Chief Justice Aamer Farooq heard the application that stated that Islamabad Accountability Court-I judge was not hearing the bail application submitted by Chaudhry who is currently detained in connection with a corruption case.

The application requested the court to order the accountability court to hear the bail plea urgently.

Turning down the request, Justice Farooq noted that the accountability court judge, Muhammad Bashir, was ill and that a new judge, Nasir Javed Rana, has recently replaced him.

When Chaudhry’s lawyer requested the court to direct the newly appointed judge to address the application, the IHC chief justice noted that this would not be appropriate as Rana is a senior jurist.

“Wait till the next hearing of the case, If the trial court does not address the application, then we will issue directions,” he noted.

The court also ordered police to present the record of cases registered against Chaudhry at the next hearing.

Chaudhry is facing several cases including alleged corruption cases.

On April 6, the former PTI leader was released from Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi.

A division bench of the Islamabad High Court comprising Chief Justice Aamer Farooq and Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri granted bail to Fawad Chaudhry on April 1 in a National Accountability Bureau (NAB) case concerning land in Jhelum.

Fawad’s counsel Qasir Imam had earlier argued before the court that an allegation had been levelled against his client that he had taken Rs5 million bribe from a citizen.

He informed the court that while the interior secretary had submitted a list of twenty-six cases against Fawad in the IHC, the Punjab police had filed an additional ten cases in the Lahore High Court without disclosing them to the IHC.

This, he argued, amounted to deceit and fraudulence against the IHC.

After considering the preliminary arguments, the court issued notices to the interior secretary and other relevant parties. The hearing of the case has been adjourned indefinitely.

Extension granted in protective bail

In another development, the former federal minister was granted an extension in his protective bail concerning 36 cases.

The court decreed that once the decision on Fawad Chaudhry's video link application is made, the seven-day period of protective bail will commence.

PTI leadership responsible for Imran, Bushra’s sufferings, says Fawad

Former Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) leader Chaudhry Fawad Hussain on Tuesday said founder PTI chairman Imran Khan and his spouse, Bushra Bibi, have been facing incarceration for long due to poor strategy of the current PTI leadership.

He was talking to journalists at his residence in Ladhar near Dina, Mr Fawad Chaudhry said that the PTI leadership had badly failed to provide a political strategy due to which problems were exacerbating for the party despite enjoying massive public support.

“The real focus of the PTI should be on building an opposition alliance with Maulana Fazlur Rehman, Mahmood Khan Achakzai, Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA) and Jamaat-i-Islami,” Mr Chaudhry said, adding that “talks with the government cannot take place unless these political parties gather on one page”.

The minister said that the government would not agree on anything as it has already lost legal, political, and constitutional fight.

“How the government can seriously engage in dialogue when it has no fear of the consequences of its failure,” the former minister said while emphasising the importance of forging an opposition alliance.

While talking about the suspension of construction work at the 128-kilometre-long Lillah-Jhelum dual carriageway, he said that the cost of the project had soared to around Rs27-30 billion from Rs16 billion, when it was approved by the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf government in 2021.

He said the federal and Punjab governments approved Rs1.5 trillion and Rs824 billion respectively for development in their budgets.

He said that the government should have allocated Rs10-12bn for the road project for its timely completion as people were undergoing agony on a daily basis.

Taking upon the elected Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) representatives from Jhelum district, he said that they had failed to approve funds for the project, and even Rs60 million for the trauma centre in Tobah town of Pind Dadan Khan which was also approved during the PTI government.

Fawad Chaudhry questions PTI leadership over Imran Khan's fate

In the midst of internal discord within the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), former federal minister Fawad Chaudhry has emphasised the unlikely prospect of party founder Imran Khan's release under the current PTI leadership.

Addressing the recent turmoil in a video posted on his official Facebook page, Chaudhry expressed discontent over the party's political strategy and its implications for its members.

He highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by imprisoned leaders, including Imran Khan, despite recent statements from PTI leaders suggesting a turnaround in the party's fortunes.

Criticism from PTI leadership regarding the loyalty of those who departed after the May 9 incidents, where violent protests erupted following Imran Khan's arrest, prompted a response from Chaudhry.

He underscored the continuing difficulties faced by PTI figures like Yasmin Rashid and Ejaz Chaudhry who remain incarcerated.

Furthermore, he questioned the efficacy of the current PTI leadership, particularly under Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, for their perceived lack of substantive action beyond commentary on legal verdicts affecting jailed PTI members.

The former federal minister advocated for a leadership change within PTI, suggesting figures like Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Pervaiz Elahi, and Asad Qaiser as potential replacements.

He urged the party leadership to abandon what he termed as unrealistic expectations regarding the imminent release of Imran Khan through legal battles.

The timing of Chaudhry's remarks coincided with reports of internal fragmentation within PTI, with 21 lawmakers allegedly exploring the formation of a forward bloc due to dissatisfaction with the current leadership's inability to secure Imran Khan's release.

Earlier resignations from key PTI positions, including that of Secretary-General Omar Ayub Khan, further underscored the growing discontent within the party's ranks.

Chaudhry's stance on these issues has not been well-received by PTI leadership, as evidenced by statements from Information Secretary Raoof Hasan, who expressed skepticism about the return of former party members who had left during challenging times.

As the situation evolves, the PTI faces significant challenges in managing internal dissent and maintaining its political cohesion amid ongoing legal and political pressures.

ECP asked to restore its prestige by giving 41 NA seats to PTI

Former Federal Minister Fawad Chaudhry on Wednesday asked the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to take meaningful actions to get its prestige restored.

Appearing before a four-member bench of the ECP, headed by Member from Sindh Nisar Ahmed Durrani, in contempt of ECP and Chief Election Commissioner against him and PTI founder Imran Khan, he said respect is drawn by actions and sought the ECP to notify 41 members of the National Assembly as PTI lawmakers.

At the outset of the proceedings, Mr Chaudhry yet again tendered an apology to the electoral watchdog, and was told by the commission to submit a written apology.

Mr Chaudhry was represented by his brother and lawyer Faisal Chaudhry. On the other hand, Shoaib Shaheen, counsel for Imran Khan, could not make it as he was busy at the high court.

Faisal Chaudhary also requested the commission to review the charge framed against Imran Khan and hold PTI founder’s open trial. He referred to a judgement recently pronounced by the Islamabad High Court holding that trial in contempt in jail does not constitute an open trial and it was in violation of Article 10-A of the Constitution.

When the bench pointed out that Imran Khan was not a party in the case, Faisal Chaudhary referred to Articles 4 and 25 of the Constitution and also cited that in Iqbal Niazi case the principle has been decided by the top court that the benefit of a judgement in one case will be applicable to the other case as well.

At a stage, a bench member told Fawad Chaudhry that it was not the job of politicians to abuse. “You were very emotional at that time. You should tender an apology.”

Mr Chaudhry’s lawyer told the court that the IHC order was related to the framing of charge in jail and suspension of jail trial, asking the commission members to carefully read the order. He requested that the commission postpone the case till further action. The ECP adjourned the hearing till Sept 4.

Fawad blames instability on 'rejected mandate'

Former federal minister Fawad Chaudhry has blamed the refusal to accept the public's electoral decision for the country's prevailing political instability.

He asserted that the ongoing protests nationwide are a direct consequence of this situation, stressing that the only solution lies in all political forces coming together for dialogue.

"Imran Khan's political stature cannot be acknowledged at gunpoint," he added.

Speaking in Jhelum, he advised the government to initiate talks with the grand opposition alliance to navigate the country out of the current crisis.

"The grand opposition alliance is in its final stages and will soon be presented before the public."

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Fawad Chaudhry slapped Barrister Shoaib Shaheen after a heated exchange sparked by derogatory remarks outside Adiala prison in Islamabad on Saturday (today).

After the fight, Chaudhry explained to the media that the altercation was triggered by Shaheen referring to him as a coward while falsely citing the PTI founder, Imran Khan.

Shaheen allegedly claimed that Imran Khan had called Fawad Chaudhry a ‘bhagora’ (Urdu for coward).

Chaudhry confirmed that he raised the issue with the PTI founder, who denied making such a statement.

He advised Shoaib not to make comments involving the founder’s name.

He confirmed that they reconciled on the instructions of the PTI founder, putting the matter to rest.

Witnesses stated that after being slapped, Shaheen fell to the ground and sustained an injury to his arm.

The confrontation took place at Gate Number Five of Adiala Jail, Rawalpindi.

During the incident, both leaders exchanged insults, prompting jail staff to intervene swiftly and separate them.

Following the altercation, Chaudhry entered the jail while Shaheen remained at the scene.

PTI condemns Fawad's attack on Shoaib Shaheen

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's (PTI) political committee has strongly condemned Fawad Chaudhry's physical assault on party leader Shoaib Shaheen outside Adiala Jail, calling it an "unprovoked and disgraceful act" that reflects a preference for brute force over reason and logic.

In a strongly worded statement, the party termed the attack an expression of "primal instincts over reason and logic".

It further asserted that this was not the first time Fawad had resorted to force and intimidation to settle scores, with several similar incidents linked to his past behaviour.

The statement also accused Fawad of frequently resorting to abusive language to undermine political opponents, calling it a reflection of his habitual vulgarity and lack of decorum.

It condemned his actions as "criminal" and a "slap on PTI's face," rather than just an act of aggression against Shaheen alone.

The committee went on to label Fawad a "coward, fugitive and political traitor" who had "stabbed PTI's political struggle for constitutional restoration, rule of law, and democracy in the back before sneaking away through the backdoor".

The statement also decried his continued "hypocrisy," calling it a defining trait of his character.

According to the party, Fawad's outburst was driven by frustration over PTI's decision to sever all ties with him at the instructions of party founder Imran Khan.

The leadership reiterated that Fawad had no authority to present himself as a PTI representative on any forum.

Taking serious notice of the incident, PTI's political committee denounced Chaudhry's "hateful conduct in the strongest possible terms." It commended Shoaib Shaheen for prioritising patience and restraint over retaliation, reaffirming the party's unwavering support for him.

Why did Dimmy take in guys like him and Sheikh Rasheed? Just a power hungry ego maniac don't you think
Why did NS and the Junta have with an alliance with now? The fact that both got smashed and had to rely on form 47 is humiliating for both you. And talking about pursuit of power. The Nooras locked up AZ and they locked up NS and 100s of cases( mostly real were) were registered. So explain this alliance. Are to we believe that wasn't in pursuit of power.
These guys reflect your beghairati like no other.

Fawad Chaudhry declared guilty in five May 9 cases

The Police on Friday declared former federal minister Fawad Chaudhry guilty in five cases related to May 9.

The Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) Lahore Judge Manzoor Ali Gill, heard the interim bail petitions of Chaudhry.

During the hearing, the police submitted their investigative report to the court, in which they declared former minister guilty in five cases related to May 9.

At this point, Chaudhry requested the court to adjourn the hearing due to the absence of his senior lawyer.

The court accepted Chaudhry's request and summoned the lawyers for arguments at the next hearing.

It is noteworthy that Fawad Chaudhry has secured interim bail in cases related to the arson at Rahat Bakery, the burning of Sher Pilau, and other incidents.

Speaking to the media outside the ATC, Chaudhry said that instead of bringing ease in Ramazan, fifty ministers have been appointed.

“The US government is reducing, but we are increasing. The government is not functioning, it's dragging along. The government has lost the election, and rigging is the chains on their feet. This government is being blackmailed by every class,” he added.

He said that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leadership was not taking advantage of the situation, and PTI has failed to form a grand alliance so far. Both Maulana Fazlur Rehman and PTI have street power, but they are trying to sideline Fazlur Rehman.

He also urged the Muslim League and PPP to end the culture of revenge, as this is the only way to lower the political temperature.
