How important was Bob to Younis Khan's success?

How important was Bob to Younis Khan's success?

Very much so.

His fledging career turned on its head on the 2005 tour of India.

After his abject performance in the Mohali Test, the media was all over him.

However, Woolmer kept faith in him and the 147 in Kolkata followed by 267 in Bangalore gave birth to a new Younis Khan.

Not sure if people remember but Bob Woolmer was extremely hurt and dissapointed by Younis Khan's antics towards the end of his tenure especially after his resignation saga in 2006. He even commented to the media that he went out of his way to support and back Younis Khan and he was extremely dissapointed by his unprofessional and childish conduct and that Pakistan Cricket was never going to move forward if players continued to be unprofessional

In an AFP report Woolmer was quoted saying "I fought for him in the team and helped him fight for his place against all odds, but his decision left me sad and disappointed. It seemed he could not take the pressure of captaincy. I am a firm believer that things happen for the good but we must learn quickly because the people of Pakistan have high expectations of this team and the World Cup is getting nearer.

Woolmer's comments on Younis Khan in 2006

Had Younis Khan stopped his unnecessary antics and accepted captaincy after Inzi, a lot of instability wouldn't have happened. Younis was always a drama queen and I recall I hated that in him back then. He always pulled off one antics after another as a senior player that created problems within the senior PCB ranks.

Not only YK but also Inzy, Shoaib Malik, MoYo, Salman Butt, Kamran Akmal and even Shahid Afridi all enjoyed the best years of their careers under Woolmer.

A truly stellar coach!

Without a doubt Pakistan's best ever coach.

How we went from Bob Woolmer to Misbah epitomises how backwards Pakistan cricket has gone over the last 10-15 years.

Younis is solely responsible for the turmoil in Pakistan cricket between 2007 and 2010.

His decision to back out at the last moment proved to be very costly.

Unfair. Younis deserves alot of the blame. But the board under Ijaz Butt and certain players deserve the blame too. You may have forgotten but I haven't forgotten the days when our chairman was a laughing stock in the cricketing world...and he didn't know a damn thing about running a cricket board either.

Unquestionably Woolmer is the best coach we ever had. His role in the development of Younis is immense. Guys like Yousuf and Malik (to a far lesser extent) also came to the fore during his tenure. And for the first time in decades Pakistan seemed to have a stable and bankable middle-order, while for one of the few times in Pakistan's cricketing history there seemed to be a succession plan in-place.

It's a shame that Younis did not step-up as Inzamam's successor, while Yousuf faded away not long afterwards. Malik aswell did not go from being the rising young star to someone who could carry the team.

He is somewhat but make him solely responsible is totally unfair.

Sounds like younis khans career finally has some clarity

Never seen Woolmer bat but I'm sure yk resembled his commitment

Woolmer backed Younis Khan all the way.

The reality is that Younis needed Woolmer around for a few more years.

This.

Remember wanting Yk dropped before that Kolkata test

Perhaps YK could have learned to be a bit more level-headed when dealing with others from Woolmer.

Younis was a grown man. Woolmer did all he could for him, I predict even he would have grown tired with his mood swings and antics as he got in 2006

Amazing coach..But coincidentally coincided with Inzi's influence of religion in team..
Had manager or PCB chairman at that team understood this , things would have been little rosy for the team

The time Pakistan regression started from 2010 spot fixing saga, and our chairman became the laughing stock for the entire world..

Bob was very experienced coach (coached might South Africa of 1999 WC). PCB was lucky they were able to rope him in after Miandad's exit..There seemed to be overall improvement in the team, and at that time , I also thought we underachieved a lot..

This is very interesting and sad time for Pakistan where they invested a decade on one individual (First made him a captain till 2016 and then he became everything) Looks like some serious Pakistan Cricket secrets Misbah have, and he used it as a bargain chip..

Case is similar to Ravi Shastri with India with almost no success (He is in that BCCI setup for almost 3 decades , in some position or the other ) You can say they can be darling of the chairman, but regimes changed, but some individuals never gets changed

Wish Pujara can ever come close to a batsmen of Younis calibre and grit.

He is somewhat but make him solely responsible is totally unfair.

Actually Musharref and Naseem whats his face dentist are the ones responsible. They decided to impose their ideology onto the cricket team as Mushy thought he was some modern day attaturk. The cricket team needed to represent his ideology. Hence why the team was constantly briefed against as being too "religious" "fundo's " "Inzi a Mullah who slaps his young becharay secular children around"

Who can forget the way our team was treated when bob died? they practically accused Inzi of killing him because he was a big Mullah with a beard.

After Bob passed away the new secular attaturk regime wanted a young hip bollywood loving cuptaan in charge so they picked mr professional malik sahib. And who can forget the Malik mafia of Misbah, the akmals, Butt and Malik. This group proceeded to sabotage Pakistan cricket. from the rebellion against Younis to the fixing in australia and then the 2010 scandal.

We also had drug sagas with our very own born again future PCB chairman Akthar sahib and Asif. We also had the rise of the IPL and the banning of our players to please India by the stupid dentist. The BCCI played the pcb like a fiddle and this idiotic dentist lead us to ruin with his attaturk leader.

Finally the great rebellion against younis once Malik the incompetent had been ousted. lead by the one and only Misbah. why? because younis was too harsh on them..You know what younis said to yousuf when he asked him "yaar thora sa nurum ho jao in kay saath" he said "yaar Yousuf tum in logoan ko nahin janaantay. In kay saath aisay he deal kurna parahay ga"..

at the time Yusuf disagreed with hime but now he openly says younis was right and they are still friends..

The Malik mafia was the biggest calamity to hit Pakistan cricket..

he is absolutely right about woolmer's contribution to his career.
plenty of other threads to rightfully bash on his other deficiencies.

Woolmer would have kept him in-check and would have kept him away from controversies and a somewhat inflated ego.

Younis Khan's ego let him down big time. Solid player, test ATG but as a person seems like a pillock

Shoaib Akhtar's tribute to Woolmer:

"I am saddened till today by the way Bob Woolmer left us"

"Many things were said after Bob Woolmer's death concerning him being murdered etc but for me, I lost a friend and a father figure"

"Lot of people think that Woolmer and I did not get along but there is no truth in that"

"When Woolmer met for the first time, he said 'Shoaib I dont want trouble from you'; I said you are talking to the wrong guy; I said you will find trouble from many people, but not from me"

"It was most painful time for me when I heard the news [of Woolmer's death], I was calling people left, right and center to ask what had happened"

"Bob Woolmer gave his time to Yousuf, Younis, to youngsters, gate-keeper and other academy staff; He went out of his way to help people out and made sure he invested a lot in youngsters but sadly did not live to see the fruits of his work"

"Its sad to think about him but we cherish the memory we spent with Bob Woolmer, his contribution to Pakistan cricket has been amazing"

"We miss you Bob, you have done a lot for our country and we will never forget you"

What an unbelievable hypocrite.

Shoaib conveniently forgets that he was caught on camera shoving Bob Woolmer, a man with respiratory problems and was in his late 50s.

"Bob you'll get no trouble from me" - Shoaib maybe your 12 year old YouTube fans have amnesia but I distinctly remember you and your fellow druggie Mohammed Asif getting busted for nandrolone before the 2006 Champions Trophy.

You and your friend were such cowards you both faked injuries before the 2007 World Cup because you thought you still had drugs in your system, and didn't want to get busted again by ICC.

Woolmer was very influential in many players career. One of our best coaches of all time.

I'm eager to know who was behind Misbah's appointment. It wouldn't surprise me if it came from an entity with a higher authority than the PCB.

Ravi Shashtri may well be insufficiently qualified, but unlike his Pakistani counterpart he isn't some deluded soul like Misbah is.

The notable members of the anti-YK clan as usual using this opportunity to take shots at Younis Khan.

Pathetic really.

Akhtar probably gave Woolmer the most problems and issues to deal with. On and off-field dramas on a regular basis.

Both Shastri and Misbah were below average cricketers with few highlighted performances here and there. Both super YES man to their management, and that is why loved by their respective boards.
Both knows ins and outs of the happenings in their boards and holds bargain chip to blackmail..
Both when they talk they keep on speaking the same thing (Shastri as a cheerleader, and Misbah as the most defensive) May be Misbah makes sense sometimes, but the way he speaks can put anyone to sleep anyways..

I think we love rumors and misplaced narratives..
Its better going forward if someone is speaking on some stats/incidents (can attach some kind of context to it, would be lot helpful to know who are the good players )

The mysterious death of then Pakistan cricket team coach Bob Woolmer in 2007 came as a shocker for the entire cricketing world. Woolmer was found dead in his hotel room under mysterious circumstances just days after their shock defeat against Ireland in the ICC World Cup and it has been 13 years since that incident. Former Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar remembered Woolmer on his death anniversary on Thursday and in a video on his YouTube channel, he discussed his relationships with the late coach.

“People think we used to fight a lot but it was not like that. When he became the coach he came to me in Northampton and said that ‘Shoaib, I don’t want any trouble from you,’ and I said him that he was talking to the wrong person and he will not have any problem with me and then he said that others have indicated this to him,” the former tearaway Pakistan pacer said.

Akhtar also said that he and Woolmer did not talk much because of ‘ideological’ differences.

“I believed in match winning performances and that match can get over soon. Cricket is a game of match winners and a good spell or a good innings can win the match for the team but Bob used to think that cricket is a team sport.”

“During the England tour after some initial hiccups I was selected in the team for my pace and I took wickets against a very high-spirited England team, who were coming after an Ashes win. We taught them a lesson and I took wickets in Multan, Faisalabad and then took a 5 wicket haul in the Lahore ODI. Woolmer was very happy then and he danced, later he told me that Shoaib you were right, individual acts do win matches,” he added.

In the video, Akhtar also got emotional while talking about his last meeting with Woolmer.

“I met him the night team was leaving for West Indies for the World Cup 2007. I told him to take care of himself and tell him not to worry much as it not the end of the world. When I was leaving he called me back and hugged my saying, ‘Shoaib I will miss you,’ I said to him I will miss you too. That was the last time we met.

“It was the most painful time for me. I was calling people left right and centre and trying to know what happened. It was a chaotic situation. The chairman ran away and PCB was facing humiliation. Finally the government took over and sent people for investigation,” he concluded.

March 17, 2007 Pakistan received a shocker from minnows Ireland as they lost the match by 3 wickets and their World Cup campaign was over. A day later, the entire cricketing and sporting world received a shocking news. Then-Pakistan coach Bob Woolmer was found dead in his hotel room under mysterious circumstances.

It's been 13 years since the death of the English coach and one his pupil Shoaib Akhtar heaped praises on his death anniversary.

Remembering his former coach, the world's fastest bowler Shoaib Akhtar said that Bob Woolmer was his very good friend and the mannerism in which he died makes him sad.

Remembering about his first meeting with late Woolmer Akhtar said that he interacted with him in Northampton.

"People think we used to fight a lot but it was not like that. When he became the coach he came to me in Northampton and said that 'Shoaib I don't want any trouble from you,' and I said him that he was talking to the wrong person and he will not have any problem with me and then he said that others have indicated this to him."

The former Pakistan pacer went on to say that he and Woolmer did not talk much for the next few years because of "ideological" differences.

"I believed in match winning performances and that match can get over soon. Cricket is a game of match winners and a good spell or a good innings can win the match for the team but Bob used to think that cricket is a team sport."

It was only during England's tour to Pakistan in 2005 that the two came close "as a friend".

"During the England tour after some initial hiccups I was selected in the team for my pace and I took wickets against a very high-spirited England team, who were coming after an Ashes win. We taught them a lesson and took wickets in Multan, Faisalabad and then took a 5 wicket haul in the Lahore ODI. Woolmer was very happy then and he danced, later he told me that Shoaib you were right, individual acts do win matches."

The 44-year-old said after that incident they became "great friends" and spent a lot of time together. It was during this time when Bob Woolmer would come into Shoaib's room during the night and discuss about the then-captain Inzamam-ul-Haq.

"He didn't have a good relationship with Inzamam-ul-Haq and the whole team knew it. I used to console him in the night when he used to come in my room, I would joke with him and also take him out for food."

An emotional Akhtar also talked about his last meeting with Bob Woolmer, on his YouTube channel.

"I met him the night team was leaving for West Indies for the World Cup 2007. I told him to take care of himself and tell him not to worry much as it not the end of the world. When I was leaving he called me back and hugged my saying, 'Shoaib I will miss you,' I said him I will miss you too. That was the last time we met.

Akhtar revealed that the night Woolmer died he was watching India and Pakistan getting "slaughtered" in the World Cup.

"It was the most painful time for me. I was calling people left right and centre and trying to know what happened. It was a chaotic situation. The chairman ran away and PCB was facing humiliation. Finally the governemnt took over and sent people for investigation."

The former speedster concluded by saying he lost father-like figure in Woolmer and it was sad that Woolmer could not see Younis Khan, whom he nurtured, become a legend.

"He had time for gatekeepers also. It is sad remebering him but we should cherish the good time," he concluded.

Former Pakistan captain Younis Khan said that if Bob Woolmer had been alive, the country’s cricket would have reached great heights:

“I have no doubt that if Woolmer had remained head coach, Pakistan cricket would have been very different today, and he would have taken it to great heights,”

“I was very close to Bob (Woolmer) and it was our daily routine to sit down together after a match or nets to discuss cricket. Unfortunately the night he passed away, we didn’t sit together as we had lost to Ireland. I was also out for a duck and was very upset with myself. So, I went to my room and locked myself in. Next day, I didn’t see him at breakfast and later we learnt about his death,”

“It was like a torture for us there. While I fully understand the responsibilities a player has to show as an ambassador of his country, it should be the other way round… authorities must also look after us,”

That whole day was nasty. We lost and then Pakistan lost and then Bob died. Dark day for us cricket fans.

Bob loved Pakistan and Pak cricket. If there was ever a foreigner who could become PCB chairman or Director of cricket it would be him. I still remember interacting with Bob through his website, he would actually reply to emails! We also pushed for Rao Ifthikar’s selection and Bob got him into the team, then when we complained about Rao he said “you were the one who wanted him in the team!” Absolute legend.
