"I probably haven't bowled this much in a stretch before but I'm OK, the body is going" : Yasir Shah

Pakistan legspinner Yasir Shah toiled hard for a second day in a row, taking his overs tally to 55.5 by the end of Pakistan's innings. While Yasir had six wickets to his name, the going had been tough for the spinner as the placid Dubai wicket made life easy for the Sri Lankan batsmen. Yasir bowled 29.3 overs on Day 1 - including two long spells of 13 and 11 overs respectively - and followed it up with 26.2 overs on Day 2 as Sri Lanka batted for more than five sessions for their first-innings score of 482. Yasir finished with figures of 6 for 184, becoming the first spinner to take five-fers in five successive Tests.

"This is what we have to do, to bowl. I always try when I play for the team," Yasir said on Saturday (October 7), before admitting that he hadn't bowled so many overs at once. "The wickets here are such - in Dubai, you don't get much support for spinners on the first day, so that's why I had to work a lot. So I just wanted to support the fast bowlers at one end."

Yasir's workload on Day 2 was split in three spells, with first two for seven overs each before the last stretched for 12. "On the second day there was more break, but the body was a little tired from so much bowling. But we'll try to make a comeback in the second innings. I probably haven't bowled this much in a stretch before but I'm ok, the body is going."

Despite Yasir's six-wicket haul, Sri Lanka ended Day 2 as the happier side, after having kept Pakistan in the field for a majority of it. Yasir managed to bowl just nine maidens in all and reckoned the presence of a second full-time spinner could've made a lot of difference. At times, Azhar Ali had to turn to part-timers Asad Shafiq (right-arm offbreak bowler) and Haris Sohail (left-arm spinner), but couldn't reap dividends. They were used for 25 overs of the 159.2 that Pakistan batted for, without any wickets to show for.

"Of course there is a difference [with another spinner for support]. There is support, he bowls with you, that makes a partnership which spinners do well in. I had three fast bowlers playing with me, but you know the wickets here are such that they don't support fast bowlers."

Pakistan made an encouraging start (51 for no loss) in reply to Sri Lanka's mammoth total, and will hope to make the most of the crucial Day 3 on Sunday, if they are to stand any chance of leveling the series.

Yasir firing shots at management to select a second spinner XI.

Like I imagined before, Yasir doesn't seem to have much faith in Sarfraz' tactics and strategies in Tests. He looked a completely different man under Misbah. A lot more confident and someone who looked really happy bowling out there.

joke of a captain sarfraz

this guy might end up injuring 2 bowlers in one match

Workhorse Yasir happy to anchor Pakistan’s attack

Not meeting the fitness standards set by the team management has been a problem for the stockily built Yasir Shah. It became such a hassle that he nearly missed selection for the Sri Lanka series.

He was overweight and failed to meet the Yo-Yo benchmark before the West Indies tour in April-May, and the same problem repeated before the ongoing Sri Lanka series. That started a debate whether skill should be preferred over fitness and if ‘match winners’, despite lacking fitness standards, should be automatic choices.

But despite the lack of fitness standards, Yasir has been the only bowler in the Pakistan attack who looks like taking wickets. On Saturday (October 7), the ever-smiling Yasir took his 13th five-wicket haul in his 28th Test to once again anchor the attack which, though the team management and skipper Sarfraz Ahmed would not accept, lacked a second spinner.

In the three innings Sri Lanka have played, Yasir has bowled 139.5 overs, 87 of those coming in the first Test in Abu Dhabi. In Dubai, he took 6 for 184 to become the first spinner in history to take five consecutive five-fors. The other three to have achieved the feat are all pacers: England’s Sydney Barnes (seven five-fors), Australia’s Charlie Turner and England’s Alec Bedser (six five-fors each).

But so busy in bowling overs after overs, Yasir was unaware of the record.

“Thank you for letting me know – I had no idea,” he said.

The workload is hectic, but Yasir acknowledged that on flat tracks of UAE, long spells are common.

“I probably haven’t bowled this much in a stretch before but I’m ok, the body is going (well),” said Yasir. “This is what we have to do, to bowl. I always try when I play for the team that I do well, that I bowl well. The wickets here are such – in Dubai, you don’t get much support for spinners on the first day, so that’s why I had to work a lot.”

Pakistan continued to play with three seamers and part-time spinners like Haris Sohail and Asad Shafiq, leaving the wicket-taking job to Yasir.

Even the pacers, except for hard-working Mohammad Abbas, were not supportive in sharing the burden of taking wickets.

“I just wanted to support the fast bowlers at one end,” said Yasir. “On the second day there was more break but the body was a little tired from so much bowling. But we’ll try to make a comeback in the second innings.”

Pakistan have been playing with two specialist spinners since being forced to play their ‘home’ games in UAE. They had Saeed Ajmal and Abdul Rehman until 2014 before the buck was passed to Yasir and Zulfiqar Babar.

Pakistan did have Bilal Asif, the offspinner, Mohammad Asghar, the fast-rising left-arm spinner, in the squad. But surprisingly, Azhar Mahmood, their bowling coach, declared them ‘of not high quality,’ raising questions on their selection in the first place.

But Yasir still toed the policy when asked whether he missed a support spinner.

“No, not really, Asad and Haris did bowl with me, supported me,” he said. “Fast bowlers bowled well, in one place. But the kind of support that you can get in England or other places wasn’t there (for pacers). The wickets help fast bowlers there. In the first two days, it doesn’t help spinners so much, it helps batting more.

“Of course there is a difference. There is support, he bowls with you and that makes a partnership which spinners do well in. I had three fast bowlers playing with me, but you know the wickets here are such that they don’t support fast bowlers.”

Yasir, though, admitted the motivation given by seniors like Misbah-ul-Haq and Younis Khan was missing.

“Yes, we have had issues,” he conceded. “Misbah left and Younis left as well, so, when senior players are with you, they motivate you a bit more. They have so much experience, they tell you how a certain batsman plays and how to bowl to him. But we will cover it slowly and we’ll be fine.”

Another where it's a case of a serious injury waiting to happen.

We seriously need a left-arm spinner, be it a off-spinner of a leg-spinner.

The need was high when the likes of Zulfi and Rehman were dropped. They helped Yasir perform even more with their partnerships.

The pacers have been nothing short of poor, barring one or two spells.

Is it the case that Mickey sees nothing in M. Asghar? Because Asghar has been good in Pak domestic cricket and Yasir needs a partner.

Insane bowling figures pf yasir shah. The way he's been bowming it is a matter of time before he is out for months. This is an injury waitingn to happen. Why take mohd asghar amd bilal asif when they were never part of the plans. I am a big advocate of mohd amir as well but i think its about time we replace him tests at least. The wonder boy has had more than enough chances to retain his place.
