"I thought we should have made at least 20 more runs (in the first ODI against WI)" : Mickey Arthur

Mickey Arthur speaking after Pakistan's loss in the first ODI against West Indies:

"We made quite a few mistakes in this game; I thought we should have made atleast 20 more runs than we did"

"Regardless of that, we should have been able to defend 308"

"I thought the WI played well and they put us under pressure"

"I will let the dust settle and then take some decisions tomorrow (regarding bowling)"

"I had no qualms with the pitch as it had 308 scored and then 309 made in 49 overs, so I thought it played really well"

"It was disappointing to see that we could not execute our plans and some of our main bowlers fell below the mark today"

"Our spinners did really well as they were able to control the game at point as well"

"Momentum from any victory counts for nothing as both teams start on 0/0 at the beginning of every game"

"We have some planning to do now and we will come back stronger"

Not a word on Mohammad Hafeez's shody batting then..

It's not even the amount of runs we scored that was the issue, it was the mindset that was clearly the problem. 308 isn't a bad score, but we were in a position to score 340 after the start we got, but then Shehzad and especially Hafeez, used that as an opportunity to build their individual scores rather than play to the team's needs.

I don't know how these guys are still getting away with it, you don't see this in any other team to this extent. The worst of it is, they both have the ability to hit the ball hard and score at 150 strike rate when they aren't playing for themselves.

This could be the match which decided who gets to play in the Champions Trophy. The Windies players certainly celebrated like they knew it. Hafeez and Shehzad were probably out last night celebrating their 50's.

Why did u drop junaid for wahab and sent hafeez at no.3 instead of babar. Now saying the usual talk we are 20 runs short. Why ur team always 20 runs short? How come you are world class coach if u keep dropping performers and then complain about the runs scored or wickets not taken after losing the match. U the one asked for hafeez in AUS and u the one promoted him ahead of babar and now complaining 20 runs short.

He's not going to go out there and say that the guy who made 88 and took a wicket should have done more.

I am pleased that he realised that the total was not ideal. And we only got there because of a Malik blitz. Better teams would have coasted to a superior total.

Anyone who analyses the innings will see where we fell behind - the Shehzad/Hafeez and Hafeez/Babar partnerships.

I wonder if cakes were cut.

The partnership between hafeez and babar was criminal , two down and you are scoring at less than 4 runs an over. Cant get any worse than that. Hafeez only played two good overs in the whole innings.

Why the hell wouldnt you play M Asghar instead of Wahab knowing WI is weak against good spin? Why on earth would you play so many accumulators on a decent wicket in modern day cricket?

Why oh why? These are pretty basic things and yet our team management isn't able to figure these things out.

He has said what needed right be said. Although we are lamenting that with our start we should have gotten 340, it's worth remembering that we got to 300 because of a rare performance. Luckily for us West Indies also put in a rare performance. Won't be seeing this tomorrow.
You should expect to see lots of pouting from Sarfaraz while observing the batting from the players dugout

I think Sarfraz went through the same thing as what Kohli went through; complacency after winning game after game. It's just a wake up call to do your work properly, hopefully we win tomorrow's game.

Game after game? I understand that we reallly want to hang our hat on the laughable t20 streak built predominantly at West Indies' expense, but this is taking it too far.
I expect us to beat West Indies in the next two matches, but I am realistic enough to know it will really us absolutely NOTHING about Sarfaraz's captaincy

Your top six comprised of Shehzad, Kami, Hafeez, Babar, Malik and Sarfaraz. Need I say more? Which one of these can consistently play at 150 SR? It was a one-off fluky innings from Malik that carried us to 300. Otherwise we were all set to 280-290 target.

When Inzi first came on the scene he said all the right things that he will induct youngsters in the side and get rid of non-performing oldies. Well where are the youngsters Inzi? You brought back Shehzad. You brought back Kami. You brought back Hafeez.

To compound our problems all three of them played "well" for themselves, raking up a fifty at pathetic SR and guys like Inzi would think wow well played.

Pakistan cricket is in complete shambles. I won't be surprised if we end up dead last in the CT and Inzi is kicked out, rightfully so. Worst selector ever. Atleast his predecessors did not adopt a holier than thou attitude. They picked TTFs and stood by it. This guy is picking TTFs while claiming he will induct youngsters.

Look at the squad he picked for the emerging cup. All batsmen are incapable of playing modern day ODIs. They are even too slow for test match cricket for God's sake.

Well said.

Also, Mickey Arthur has to be held responsible for playing these guys. If he DOES play them, he has to be tough and set a criteria that your strike rate must be above 95.

He's not doing anything right.

20 more wouldn't have tsopped Sarfraz running around like a headless chicken

LOOL well said too.

20 runs wouldn't have made a difference with such captaincy yesterday. :sarfi

Maybe, with 340 or 350 on the board, things could've been different.

he's right on all counts. the batting was poor, but 1. a few of the players are only just back so will obviously be finding their feet and paranoid about being dropped again 2. the players picked don't have the talent needed to hit big 3. theres very few players on the bench that are obvious shoe ins that are that much better, but most importantly, the game wasn't lost with the 20 runs shortage, as Mickey rightfully says, the 308 was defensible. the game was lost by the bowlers, and more specifically the so-called spearheads.

with the windies needing nearly ten an over in the last 16 overs with a) their top 9 players away at the ipl b) four wickets down c) because the part timers had bolted so well and so much, our crap spearheads had much of their overs, wahab had 6 of the last 16, amir had 4 of the last 16 - by far and away the biggest culprits were them d) the last West Indian batters at the crease had in terms of total career one day international runs (including this game): 229 - mohammed, 467 - carter, 81 - nurse, 638 - holder.

this loss was down to wahab and amir first and foremost way before considering blame on anyone else.

From what I saw, he was just chilling during the middle overs thinking we won this. Don't think he's gonna slip up again. We should win the next two games.

Pakistan is too steeped in its pathetic/insipid culture to wake up and smell the coffee; its so lame, lazy and uninspired that it defies belief ...and the same goes for the cricket team.

Everyone has been crying out since the debacle of 2015 to rebuild the team and to bring it into the 21st century....look at what England did?

But for Pakistan and the ultra conservative Inzi, its a job way beyond his ability...

For the past 2 years ive read comment after comment on this forum as to how best to go about it...eg. less of accumulators and more of hitters and look where we are?

Only Babar and Sarfaraz in top 6...rest should be the ones to 'give it a whack'...but we have?...we all know who we have?

Challo....

Basically this. Even Sarfraz wouldn't get into any settled modern LOI unit. However, he can play in Pak team for now, is a WK as well.
