Regarded as one of Pakistan’s brightest talents, the left-handed batsman Haris Sohail debuted for Pakistan in July 2013 on the tour of the West Indies. Whilst a promising international career beckoned for Haris, his march towards establishing a permanent place in Pakistan’s frail middle order was interrupted by a career-threatening knee injury.

He last played for Pakistan in the historic home-series against Zimbabwe in 2015 and has struggled since then to recover from his injury until recently when he has been given a chance to represent Pakistan in the Champions Trophy in England.

Whilst his recall to the Pakistan side was more of a side-effect of Umar Akmal’s fitness issues, 28-year-old Haris Sohail is relieved that he now has another chance to continue his international career as he stated to PakPassion.net.

“I'm delighted to be back in the international fold once again. It's been a tough two years and it's been a long and at times difficult road back to fitness. I worked at the National Cricket Academy, went to UAE for treatment, came to England and eventually I have made my way back to full fitness.”

To have been marked as one for the future and to have had a bright start to his international career would have been heartening for Haris but the devastation of facing up to an injury which could have destroyed his dreams did take a toll on his psyche, but he persevered as he explained, “Yes there were some dark days when I was unfit and there were times when you get frustrated. But I had faith in the Almighty that one day I would be back and that is what drove me on and spurred me on to keep working hard on regaining my levels of fitness and overcome the injury problems.”

Many concerns were raised about Haris’s ability to recover from his injury but thankfully he has put all that speculation to rest by passing fitness tests and is now ready for duty for his national side in the Champions Trophy campaign.

“There are no issues with my fitness now at all. I passed the fitness test in Lahore at the National Cricket Academy and then when I came to England I had a further fitness test which I also passed. So, there are no concerns or issues about my fitness at all which is a massive boost for me.”

The weight of expectations on players making comebacks seems to be unusually high as a well-meaning fan-base looks to players like Haris Sohail as the answer to a lot of Pakistan’s recent issues with the batting and the left-handed batsman, confident after a good domestic season, is not worried about this stress as he remarked, “Yes there is pressure on me as I am coming back to international cricket after two years but you have to take that challenge head on. I knew that one day I would come back to the international squad and I was counting the days for my return to the Pakistan team. I gained a lot of confidence from my return in domestic cricket. I was happy with my form there and to do so well after a gap of nearly 18 months in domestic cricket was a huge release of pressure and gave me a lot of confidence.”

Pakistan’s recent form in ODIs has shown some glimpses of hope but the 8th ranking in ICC’s ODIs is a matter for concern. In that context, Haris’s possible return to international cricket is a cause for hope amongst the die-hard fans. However, for the moment, all eyes seem to be only on one game and that is the upcoming marquis clash between arch rivals India and Pakistan at Edgbaston. For Haris, a much-awaited comeback to the national side could become even more special if he is picked to play in the final XI on June 4th.

“There is nothing quite like an India versus Pakistan clash and the atmosphere is bound to be brilliant. These are unique matches and to be a part of these matches is what cricket is all about. I hope that I am picked, but that is up to the team management so let’s see how this goes.”

So, what in Haris’s view can the world of cricket and especially the Pakistan fans expect from the Pakistan side in the iconic clash with India?

“Our preparations for the India clash have been excellent and whilst the Indian team is a strong one we are here to play cricket also and not just admire the opposition team and players. We will plan for Virat Kohli just the same as we will for the other Indian players. We are here to win the tournament and are not here to make the numbers up.”

Haris Sohail’s impending return to international cricket is indeed excellent news for Pakistan but more importantly, it is a great opportunity for the player to resume his career and continue his journey towards establishing himself in the national side. This is a task which will not be easy but Haris has no doubts in his ability to make this chance count, “Even though I was called up last-minute for the Champions Trophy, my preparations have been very good. I am confident, I am now fit and I am ready to score runs for Pakistan once again. I've lost 2 years of my career due to injury and I want to make up for lost time", he concluded.

Should bat at 4 in ODIs and Tests. Our second best ODI batsman after Babar. Hope he plays against India in place of azhar/shehzad

Would be unfair on Sohail to come back to international cricket after two years in a high pressure game against India. Should have atleast given a knock in the first warmup.

He will still be a better option than shehzad and azhar

Not sure what the buzz is about this guy, he can't hit big shots, the amount of times he gets out attempting big shots to break the shackles is staggering. It was good that he could bowl but i am not sure if he is a good fielder especially after his knee injury i believe he will be slow in the field.

My prediction is that he will be the subject of plenty of ridicule in the next few months should he fail to perform just like we have done with many other players.

Should bat at 4 in Odis. Can rotate the strike vs spin and pace, also can play through the offside and legside vs both pace and spin. Delighted he's back. Hopefully he stays healthy now.

He is the father of modern day batting for Pakistan.

To be honest I've seen him hit sixes in the middle of his innings so he'll hit them at a good pace. Don't really see much of a problem with him.

He is 5 times the batsman than the mediocre shehzad is who you obviously rate

I really like Haris, but I completely lost it at 'he is the father of modern day batting for Pakistan.' :)) :)) :))

I almost literally cringed.

Your team is shaping up well, as per the modern standards.

Sahibzada
Sharjeel
Babar
Haris
Sarfraz
Imad

That's a good top 6, with left and right combo.

Incorrect, Sharjeel is embroiled in a spot-fixing scandal and unlikely to be a part of the side for the next series or two at the very least. Sahibzada Farhan has only played and performed in ONE domestic tournament, no way in hell he is being inducted in the side right away. As per Inzi standard operating procedure he would be sent on a few A tours and if he performs there then will be inducted in the side.

Hafeez and Malik are also going no where for the next series or two at least. Hafeez might be in the firing line if he completely flops in the CT but remember we do play against SL and Prof will cash in on that. Malik has done enough over the past year or two to atleast have some breathing space. If he fails in CT and SL series after then he should be worried.

Sharjeel being back is inevitable.

Doesn't look like he will get a game at this tournament.

i am pretty sure, news will filter out after tournament is over that he is not match fit.

I wonder if he's now fully fit. Hope to see him as part of the playing XI against Sri Lanka, if so.

Why do people keep questioning his fitness? Surely Mickey wouldn't have him as part of the squad if he didn't think he was fully fit?

I guess I should rephrase that. I meant that I hope he is fit to play in a full Test match to the best of his capabilities i.e. full match-fitness. He hasn't played much FC cricket in the recent past which is why I'm doubtful of his match fitness.

You can be fully fit and still struggle over the course of a Test match, specially in sapping UAE conditions.

However, the management would be aware of this as well so perhaps this is all redundant! :)

I see, fair enough.

The fact he has been selected would suggest he is match-fit, but I suppose you never know until he gets on the field. Watching Woakes bowl in the second test vs Windies was a perfect reminder of this truism!

Like you, I hope he is match fit and part of the playing XI.

Mubarak to Haris Sohail for his debut today

So happy to see this- it's been too long. Can't wait to see him bat and prove all his haters wrong.

Lovely innings today for 79 - seems to have established himself in middle order. End of Fawad Alam's dreams?

Lovely player.

Eagerly waiting to see him score a hundred, that could come as early as this summer. If there's anyone besides Azhar and Sami who should be able to score runs in England, it's Haris.

His tendency to throw his wicket away after getting the 50 is bit irritating. Can't throw it away once you get in especially in these conditions.

Experience and mentoring will fix that.

Looks very confident so far - very smooth!

Man if this guy don't get a big daddy hundred tomorrow, I'll travel to Lord's and slap him right back to Pakistan..

That's how badly I want him and Babar to dominate the next era.

Perfect opportunity to put his money where his mouth is. Hope he pushes on tomorrow.

Has a technical flaw where the bat face turns in his hand the dropped catch was due to the same reason

Has a tendancy to play a loose shot and throw it away when well set. Tomorrow is a day for battling away all day and getting his name on honours board with a hundred hopefully.

He should really try to play a big inning tomorrow. He's too good a batsman to get out on 30s/40s.

Needs to cash in on the chance he got and score a daddy hundred tomorrow. Announce his much delayed arrival. In my humble opinion he is the most talented bat who has debuted for us since 2010... Maybe Fakhar might be slightly ahead because of his flair and never say die attitude.

I feel like Fakhar is much more in the mould of a Younis Khan, not the most supremely talented player but just incredibly determined and gritty

Today was special by azhar and haris.
Let's face it it's our worst nightmare facing Anderson Broad with a new cherry when it is overcast and the lights are on.
Impressive start. Need to kick on tomorrow

Fakhar is a machine, his attitude, his hard work and his commitment is unparalleled. Fakhar is more like an Imran Khan with his diligence and work ethic and the desire to be good. Sharjeel Khan, I would say, was the most talented player we've had in the last decade with Sohail as perhaps the close second.

I feel so comfortable watching him bat. So talented. He is due a big innings, hopefully soon.

I hope he retires from playing meaningless T20i and T20 matches. Pakistans Test and Odi team needs a 100% fit Haris.
However if he does play the next PSL he should open.

I won’t mind that and his game is not suited to T20is anyway

Before yesterdays match i felt that although Haris had improved as a player recently he lacked aggression to become a top notch ODI player. After yesterdays innings, he showed more than enough that he could be a real player against the big boys under pressure.

I haven't bought into the Haris Sohail hype, but at this point he has clearly earned an extended run.
More than anything, his potential to play strokes in the middle overs is very appealing - Pak have totally lacked this in the last few years

Lets hope he starts bowling...we need a proper 6th bowler, not a filler like Malik or Fakhar.
Only his bowling would keep him un the side especially when Malik and Hafeez are gone
If he doesnt, he would never play again!

Haris is one of the best stroke-makers in the side. Has been ever since he debuted 4 years ago and someone who can keep the scoreboard ticking in the middle-overs with his rotation of strike. And quite frankly, I would rather have him in the side than someone like Asif Ali whose plan of going over midwicket usually ends up taking him back to the pavilion.

Haris Sohail's style of innings is so pivotal to our team. He was aggressive in the middle order, he accompanied Babar really well and proved he should be a consistent figure in our team. He can bowl and is a useful option at that too. If he keeps himself fit then I don't see why we can't play him in our middle order.

Above all else, he is a an excellent timer of the bowl and a great player of quick's. He should be a regular in our team and should have been from time back, since his debut.

The sooner this Asif Ali experiment ends, the better for Pakistan cricket...

In a line up of Imam, Fakhar, Babar, Malik, Sohail, Hafeez, Sarfraz, followed by bowlers I'm not finding a place for Asif Ali.
But Imam kills the momentum upfront putting too much pressure on the likes of Fakhar & Babar.

If Asif Ali is to be dropped I think he should be replaced with a similar type player.

Imam entry to home is not long he is failed every match against good team temperament against minnows is not every thing...

Amer yamin best hitter better than asif

Batting looked promising but frustrating to see him finish the job.

He gets starts but gives it away with poor shots. This has to change. It's not a very good trait for a batsmen who is 29 to have.

Wasnt that the same issue with Babar? Think he just needs to play more Tests and he will be fine.

Problem is we think of Haris as having been with us for a long time but that isnt really true.

It was painful to see him getting out in such a fashion. He does all the hard work then gives it away when he looks set for a big one, is it lapses in concentration or fitness issues with him only time will tell. I except him to over come this glitch in his batting the more he plays. One good about him is that he seems to work on his weaknesses, as he was always good against pace and has improved leaps and bounds against spin from the time when he started off.

Babar is still a young player. At 29 if you can't capitalise on starts and keep on getting out it's a worry.

He might learn, I am willing to give him a chance but I'm very worried by Haris inability to kick on.

Then please for the love of God stop getting out on full tosses.

He has the makings of a top player. An average of 50+ in FC shows he has the temperament to play big innings. Both Babar and Haris need to stamp themselves in this series.
