KARACHI: Pakistan middle-order batsman Asad Shafiq is enjoying playing under skipper Safraz Ahmed and believes that the entire team is reaping the rewards of his aggressive style.

“Not just me, but the entire Pakistan team has benefitted from playing under Sarfraz,” said Shafiq in an interview with Daily Express. “I have known Sarfraz from a very long time and I don’t find his attitude different in both domestic and international cricket. His aggressive intent brings positivity to the side and hopefully Pakistan will keep on doing well while he is captain.”

Shafiq — who has 11 hundreds and 20 half-centuries in Test matches — prefers to keep the team’s objectives ahead of his personal achievements, however, he did stress on the importance of improving his conversion rate.

“As a team we were able to achieve our goals but as a player I was not able to perform too well,” he said. “I haven’t set any specific targets as far as runs and matches are concerned because my only aim is to come up with good performances.”

“I wanted to, at least, score one century on the tour however, unfortunately, that did not happen. But as long as the team’s objectives are achieved, that is enough for me; my personal milestones are secondary in nature. I will try not to repeat mistake of throwing away my wickets once I get past the half-century mark,” he added.

When asked about filling the void left by veteran duo of Misbahul Haq and Younus Khan, Shafiq said that he, along with Azhar Ali, are trying their best to shoulder the massive responsibility.

“Azhar and I were not under pressure because we have to fill in the shoes of greats like Misbah and Younus, but we are doing our best we can to shoulder this responsibility and let’s hope it works out well,” he said.

The right-handed batsman has played the majority of domestic cricket batting higher up the order, but was not too concerned about his batting position when playing for Pakistan.

“I have always enjoyed batting at higher positions because that is where I batted in domestic cricket, but when you play for Pakistan, it is important to adapt and play according to the requirements of the team rather than doing what personally suits me.’

Didnt quite work out for Shafiq. Really needs to do better than this.

I don't get why Azhar and Shafiq's performances are being grouped together on this tour.

Shafiq was miles better with important 1st innings fifties at Malahide and Lord's.

Azhar failed in all innings bar an important fifty at Lord's.

For that to happen you need to not bat like a tailender

naa bhai tum se naa ho payga. He should have been dropped a long time ago but now too much investment in him and azhar. They are not going to be dropped now.

I cant be the only one who is saddened by this statement. After 8 seasons on investment in him in which he had gotten been almost guaranteed his spot in late middle order, he is letting us in on his thinking which is very self serving and tells us that his aim from a series is to score one century on a tour"

Because for almost a decade he has learned that and all he has to do is score in one inning and he will be rewarded for it and keep his spot for next tour by the captain and hierarchy. Such a shame.

I don't understand why he is hated so much. Yes, some criticism he gets is justified but people act as if he's an awful player and make him the scapegoat too much. Did he really have such an awful series? In the Test against England he only needed to bat first and scored a very good 59 - was only dismissed by a snorter. Against Ireland, in the 1st innings he came in at 13-2 and scored 62. In the Test we lost at Leeds, he was the 3rd top scorer in the 1st innings as well. 27 out of 174 all out. Has centuries in Australia, South Africa and England. Really don't understand this hate.

Maybe just maybe it’s cos he averages under 40 which in this day and age is poor for a frontline batsman who’s been been playing since 2010

This kind of shows his mentality as a batsman. He is always happy to score one hundred per series and this has kind of kept him in the side. A hungry batsman would want more than that. We need batsmen who don’t get satisfied by one hundred per tour. Time to replace him with someone more deserving.

Pakistan doesn't win and Asad doesn't score a fifty if Azhar doesn't play out the new ball at Lord's.
