What about the 2016 Australia series when Misbah and YK were batting like tailenders and Azhar was almost singlehandedly holding the batting line-up together?
 
If Pakistan goes on to win this series, this is due to Yasir Shah and Azhar Ali, the experience duo.

He has played well but the problem is he doesn't step that enough. Mostly gets a 50 on inconsistent basis when someone at top scores big or when he scores a hundred, they are hopeless runs in a losing cause.

What did Harris do outside that hundred? And Babar scored a soft hundred as well. Yasir and Azhar were two major men and then the rest.
 
Good knock, however he isn't ruthless enough. A set YK destroyed opposition mentally and scored big runs. One of Azhar and Shafiq should have gone on to score a big ton, to bat NZ out of the game.

yup. A YK and Misbah combo would have netted about: 160+ for YK and 100 - 110 for Misbah
 
im a big fan of azhar. But he played a really lazy silly shot today and he knows it. If he had stayed for another hour we would have gotten a massive lead..Truth is Haris and babar need to step up even more because time is running out for them. Azhar wont be here for ever..

He played ok. Needed to score 150+.

Yeah. As the senior most batsman in the team, he needs to start imposing himself on the opposition. Don't mind the SR, as long as he scores big runs and grinds the opposition into the ground.

Shafiq will be Shafiq. Will never be prolific.
 
Perhaps I should compile a list of the number of useless, match losing knocks he has played. When your main batsman is incapable of batting at a healthy strike and completely covers against the new ball, you can expect such results.

In today's era, a 40 strike rate player will never be the front man in any quality team. Never.
 
He needs to show up against South Africa in this game.

There are two types of match-losing knocks: (type a) when you lose the game because of the failures of others and (type b) when you yourself are directly responsible of helping the opposition win.

Azhar has played very few (type a) knocks in career and quite a few (type b) knocks.
 
We just need him to bat here and hold his end. Anybody saying anything else is talking nonsense

He cannot be all that bad given some of the innings he has played.
 
Don't see him getting there. Have a feeling he will be moved on earlier than expected
 
Azhar Ali not battling to keep the ball off his face from Steyn - his technique seems gone on such pitches.

I have a feeling he will not reach 100 Tests. He may get dropped before that. Nonetheless, I expect him to reach 8,000 Test runs.
 
Runs or not domestically hes not good enough at international level any more and needs to be dropped. Time to move forward.

Also, when Azhar Ali reached 31 today, he completed 12,000 first-class runs in his 192nd match.

If he does play in the Karachi Test - and captain Babar Azam was unwilling to confirm that he would - he will finish three Tests short of 100 Tests (becoming only the sixth Pakistan player to that landmark). But he will finish either way in fifth on their all-time runs-scoring charts, an immense achievement for a player who started out as a legspinner.

There is no point picking him now. He will also not gain anything by playing an extra test match as he is not going to be able to play a hundred test matches anyways. He is not good enough anymore and the team is desperately trying to avoid being whitewashed at home and cannot afford to carry a passenger.
 
Could make a decent batting coach I reckon.

I'm sure youngsters would listen to him and learn from him.
