ICC lifts suspension on Sri Lanka Cricket [Update in post #122]

I think ICC only does this when the board itself asks them to intervene.

Because with the political interference that exists in PCB or ACB, almost all of subcontinent teams membership should had been cancelled.

Like when Taliban took over, one of the Afghan domestic cricketers (retired now), decided to join the Taliban and got the selectors position later on. His name is Abdullah Mazari

BCCI is not a part of Indian government. It is a private society registered in Chennai. It is run according to its own rules and regulations and it is not answerable to Government for its day to day working. Of course, any organisation, whether government or private, need to follow the laws of the land.

Cricket boards of India, England, Australia, New Zealand are private organisations. So they are truly independent from Government interference. On the other hand, cricket boards of Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka are under the respective governments. For example PCB head is appointed by PM of Pakistan. Likewise cricket board heads of Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are appointed by their PM. So the board of these countries are actually susceptible to government interference as they report to their governments.

How did Jay Shah, the son of Amit Shah, become the Secretary of BCCI?

How did Jay Shah, the son of Amit Shah, become the Secretary of BCCI?
BCCI is run by successful businessmen. They know how to be in the good books of the government. That is how Jay Shah is a bigwig of BCCI.He was there in BCCI even before BJP had come into power, but as a BCCI official in Gujarat. Even opposition party members are BCCI officials. For example Rajeev Shukla of congress in there and he is seen looking so happy in the company of Jay Shah. In other words, BCCI know how to run their business and how to be in the good books of those that matter.

What happens to the World Test Championship fixtures involving Sri Lanka then? Hopefully some replacement games, and not just a forfeit. They’re meant to be touring England in August…

What a joke. Doesn't Indian government interfere in BCCI's decisions? I mean how can you justify BCCI's stance of not playing any bilateral series against Pakistan without involving Indian government lol? :inti

If BCCI is a private body then why do they depend on Indian government's decision to play bilateral series against Pakistan? Please explain. :inti

Government can make BCCI follow their rules. How can ICC censure Indian government if Indian government wants BCCI to follow rules made by them ? ICC writ runs on Boards, not on governments.

With BCCI not playing with Pakistan and SLC suspended and our relations with BCB are not ideal, Pakistan choices are further skimmed and it gives us another avenue to have quadrangle series with AFG IRE and NED this April May in Pakistan when there is IPL window

Going to another country is subject to the law of the land. If your country does not want you to go to another country, you cannot. Private bodies are not exempted in the matter.

Lol you can never justify the hypocritical stance of BCCI/Indian Govt. of selectively playing against Pakistan. They can easily play a series in UAE if they want to. There are no excuses.:inti

As mentioned earlier, these people are businessmen. They know whom to vote and elect.
Ofcourse. That's how Madhav Rao Scindia became President. That's how Sharad Pawar became President. That's how many politically connected people got BCCI posts.

Compare and contrast it with the way the cricket boards of other Asian countries are run. They have no clue how to run their boards to earn money for the board. Some people say that BCCI is rich because of Indian population. Seeing that Pakistan is the second most populous cricket playing nation, how come Pakistan is not the second richest cricket board ?

Sri Lanka Cricket Skipper Pleads For ICC Suspension To End

Sri Lanka skipper Kusal Mendis appealed Sunday for the governing International Cricket Council to lift its suspension of the country over alleged political interference in the local board.

"This is our profession and we can't be staying at home doing nothing," Mendis told reporters in the capital Colombo.

"We want to start practising as there are a few tours to happen next year."

The ICC said on Friday that Sri Lanka Cricket was "in serious breach" of its obligations as a member, highlighting "the requirement to manage its affairs autonomously and to ensure that there is no government interference".

The suspension came a day after Sri Lanka's parliament asked the board to resign over allegations by sports minister Roshan Ranasinghe that it had syphoned off millions of dollars.

"As players we had no control over that," Mendis said. "As the captain I only hope for its (the ban's) removal so that we can resume our game."

It was not immediately clear if the indefinite suspension would affect Sri Lanka hosting the Under-19 World Cup in January.

The crisis involving the cricket board -- the richest sporting organisation in the bankrupt island country -- came to a head after Sri Lanka's humiliating World Cup defeat by India earlier this month.

Team manager Mahinda Halangoda said Sri Lanka's players had been told to try and carry on as normal.

"The team management had a discussion with the players and asked them to focus on cricket," he said.

In response to the persistent and damaging defamatory statements made by the Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs Roshan Ranasinghe, Sri Lanka Cricket has taken a decisive step to protect its reputation and integrity. New Delhi: Arjuna Ranatunga, Sri Lanka’s World Cup-winning captain, has accused Jay Shah, the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), of both ‘running’ and ‘ruining’ Sri Lankan cricket.

Ranatunga, speaking on the YouTube channel ‘Truth with Chamuditha’ alleged that there was a connection between Sri Lanka Cricket , the country’s cricket board , officials and Jay Shah and said that BCCI believes that it can exert control over SLC’s affairs.Ranatunga also spoke on the alleged BCCI-SLC connection to the Sri Lankan newspaper Daily Mirror.

“Because of the connection between SLC officials and Jay Shah they (the BCCI) are under the impression that they can trample and control SLC…Jay Shah is running Sri Lanka Cricket. SLC is being ruined because of pressure from Jay Shah. One man in India is ruining Sri Lankan cricket. He is only powerful because of his father, who is India’s home minister,” he said.

Ranatunga’s allegations gain weight in the backdrop of the International Cricket Council (ICC) suspending SLC for its failure to ‘manage its affairs autonomously,’ a move that was preceded by a unanimous resolution in the Sri Lankan parliament calling for the ousting of the ‘allegedly corrupt’ SLC management.

This world cup, the 1996 champions managed to win only a single game out of the nine it played. Securing the ninth position on the points table, Sri Lanka finds itself ineligible for participation in the 2025 Champions Trophy. The past week has been tumultuous.

Sri Lanka Cricket Responds to Allegations by SJB Leadership and Clarifies ICC Reporting

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) strongly refutes the recent allegations made by the leadership of the SJB (Samagi Jana Balawegaya) in the parliament regarding the communication between SLC and the International Cricket Council (ICC). It is evident that there is a misapprehension and misinterpretation of the contents of the letter underreference, and the SLC is compelled to clarify its position on the said matter.

SLC, as a Full Member of the ICC, is duty-bound and obliged to adhere to the member obligations envisaged in the articles of association of the ICC. In doing so SLC is further obliged to keep the ICC informed of any difficulty and/or difficulties of adhering to such obligations.

With the appointment of Mr Roshan Ranasinghe as the Hon. Minister of Sports, SLC has been experiencing continuous undue interferences by the Hon. Ministerin its governance and operational matters.

SLC hereby draws attention to article 2.4(d) of the ICC Articles of Association which reads as follows;

2.4 (D) manage its affairs autonomously and ensure that there is no government (or other public or quasi-public body) interference in its governance, regulation and/or administration of Cricket in its Cricket Playing Country (including in operational matters, in the selection andmanage its day- to-day affairs as envisaged in the said article, Compelling the SLC to bring such interferences to the attention of ICC as SLC could not honourits obligations to comply with the said requirements envisaged in the article 2.4(D) of the ICC Articles.

SLC being the governing body of the sport of cricket in Sri Lanka, recognized by the ICC in terms of article 2.3 of the Articles of Association of the ICC is also entrusted with the administration, management and development of cricket in Sri Lanka.

In the backdrop ofrepeated interferences by Mr. Roshan Ranasinghe Hon. Minister of Sports and the said interferences being brought to the attention of the ICC by SLC, the ICC did take the following actions as stated below.

1. November 25, 2022: ICC issued the first warning letterto SLC regarding political interference by the Sports Minister.

2. April 2023: A 3-member committee, appointed by the ICC, to monitor and report back on the Political interferences of the Minister of Sports.

3. May 2023: ICC Deputy Chairman Mr. Imran Khawaja visited Sri Lanka to inform the relevant stakeholders of the importance of permitting SLC to function autonomously and the possible repercussions of not adhering to article 2.4(D) of the Articles of Association of ICC

The SLC wish to state despite the said warnings and the ICC Deputy Chairman Mr. Khawaja’s visit to Sri Lanka the Hon. Minister of Sports about interfering with the affairs of SLC.

2. October 2023: The Sports Minister circulated internal information and confidential documents to the ICC, condemning SLC operations despite ICC

3. November 2023: The Sports Minister arbitrarily appointed an Interim committee, leading to SLC obtaining a courtruling to suspend the Gazette notification and the interim Committee.

In response to the action of the Hon Ministerthe ICC had explicitly and categorically stated that it would notrecognize any interim committees appointed by the Hon. Minister and The ICC would only recognize the duly elected office bearers of SLC as their point of contact as far as Sri Lanka is concerned.

Therefore the suspension of SLC was a result of continues interferences by the Hon. Minister despite numerous warnings resulting in SLC not being able to adhere to article 2.4D in violation of said article and as stated it is quite evident that it was not a result of SLC’s communication which was misquoted and/or misapprehended by the Leader of SJB in the Parliament.

SLC sympathizes with those who may not fully understand the intricacies of how sports associations affiliated with international bodies such as ICC function. We sincerely; request anyone who wants to be critical of SLC to diligently intelligently considerthe facts priorto disseminating baseless accusations and statements lacking merit.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) Board met today and confirmed the terms of the suspension of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC). After hearing representation from SLC, the ICC Board decided that Sri Lanka can continue to compete internationally both in bilateral cricket and ICC events after being suspended recently for breaching its obligations as a Member in particular the requirement to manage its affairs autonomously and without government interference.

However, funding to SLC will be controlled by the ICC and the ICC Board confirmed Sri Lanka will no longer host the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup 2024, which will now be held in South Africa.

Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to reiterate that Wanindu Hasaranga and Dushmantha Chameera were included in the 15-member squad selected by the Sri Lanka Cricket Selectors to take part in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.

The cricket selectors selected the initial squad, of which both of these players were included, during a selection meeting held on September 5, 2023, at the SLC headquarters.

This was done despite the fact that both players were still recovering from injuries.

Following the selection meeting, on the same day, Sri Lanka Cricket sent the squad seeking approval of the National Sports Selection Committee, which comes under the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs.

In response, the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs sent a letter to Sri Lanka Cricket on September 26, 2023, seeking medical clearance to approve the inclusion of Wanindu Hasaranga, Dushmantha Chameera, and Dilshan Madushanka.

Finally, Sri Lanka Cricket, despite its intention to send Hasaranga and Chameera to the World Cup with the plan to play them at some point in the tournament after the duo recover from injuries, did not succeed, as the sports ministry did not approve the sending of the two players without medical clearance.

Sri Lanka's sports minister Roshan Ranasinghe was sacked on Monday hours after he accused President Ranil Wickremesinghe of trying to assassinate him over his moves to clean up corruption at the cricket board. Officials said Roshan Ranasinghe was dismissed ahead of Monday's weekly cabinet meeting after he told parliament that Wickremesinghe should be held responsible if he was killed. "I fear I could be killed over my work to clean up the cricket board," Ranasinghe told parliament, escalating a confrontation with Wickremesinghe who had been at loggerheads with the minister over the running of Sri Lanka Cricket.

"If I am assassinated on the road, the president and his chief of staff will be responsible," Ranasinghe said.

There was no immediate reaction from Wickremesinghe except confirmation from his office that the minister was dismissed.

Ranasinghe sacked the elected cricket board earlier this month after accusing office-bearers of gross corruption, a charge they have denied and are challenging in court.

The cricket board is the richest sporting organisation in the otherwise bankrupt island country.

The International Cricket Council suspended Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) earlier this month, saying it had failed to ensure there was no government interference in its affairs, violating the world body's rules.

Ranasinghe has refused the president's calls to revoke the sacking of the board.

The parliament backed the sports minister by passing a non-binding resolution three weeks ago asking the cricket board to resign pending a forensic audit of its accounts.

Wickremesinghe has appointed a committee to investigate the ICC suspension.

The cash-strapped country defaulted on its $46 billion debt in April last year after running out of foreign exchange to finance imports of even the most essential commodities, making life a misery for the island's 22 million people.

At the peak of last year's crisis, months of civil unrest forced the ouster of then-president Gotabaya Rajapaksa when protesters stormed his residence.

There is total chaos in Sri Lanka cricket and its ministries. I hope they solve it soon and get back on track again.

It is a shame because they were a big heavyweight at one point.

SRI LANKA CRICKET FILES COMPLAINT WITH BRIBERY COMMISSION AGAINST MR. ROSHAN RANASINGHE MP FOR ALLEGED MISUSE OF FUNDS

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) wishes to inform that it has formally lodged a complaint with the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption in Sri Lanka against Mr. Roshan Ranasinghe MP over the alleged misuse of funds provided by SLC to the National Sports Fund for the development of various other sports in Sri Lanka.

The decision to file this complaint stems from the concern that Mr. Roshan Ranasinghe MP has not appropriately disclosed the utilization of funds allocated by SLC for the intended purposes.

This move comes in the wake of discernible disparity between the information disclosed to the media by Mr. Ranasinghe MP and the response received by SLC under a Right to Information (RTI) application, outlining the specifics of the expenditures made.

SLC wishes to emphasize the importance of maintaining the integrity of financial transactions and ensuring that funds are utilized for their designated purposes and the said formal complaint filed with the Bribery Commission underscores SLC's dedication to upholding the highest standards of governance and ethics within the realm of sports administration.

SLC trusts that the Bribery Commission will conduct a thorough investigation into the matter to ascertain the facts and take appropriate action as necessary and Sri Lanka Cricket will continue to collaborate with relevant authorities to ensure a fair and just resolution to this issue, as part of its ongoing commitment to the promotion and advancement of sports in Sri Lanka.

I hope it leads to a fair resolution. Upholding high standards of governance and ethics is paramount in sports administration.

Minister revokes sacking of Sri Lanka cricket board in bid to lift International Cricket Council suspension

Sri Lanka's sports minister Harin Fernando has revoked the decision to sack the national cricket board (SLC) in the hope of ending its International Cricket Council (ICC) suspension.

The SLC was sacked last month following the team's poor World Cup run, where they finished ninth out 10 teams.

Although the decision was reversed by a court, the ICC suspended Sri Lanka due to government interference.

The country was also revoked as host of the 2024 Under-19 men's World Cup.

"I signed a gazette to revoke the decision appointing an interim committee for Sri Lanka Cricket, aiming to lift our ICC suspension," Fernando said on X, previously known as Twitter.

Fernando also asked the ICC for its "observations" on an audit report into alleged corruption by the SLC during last year's T20 World Cup in Australia.

Fernando's predecessor Roshan Ranasinghe made corruption allegations against the SLC in a statement to parliament last month and called for board members to resign.

Upul Tharanga is a legend for Sri Lanka. I really hope Sri Lanka Cricket will rise again under his tenure as Chairman of the Selection Committee. Ajanta Mendis is also back in business as a Member of the Selection Committee.

Sometimes I wonder which is the most corrupt nation in the sub continent. There are so many good contenders.

Suspended SLC Hopeful Of Reinstatement After ICC CEO Allardice's Visit

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) is hopeful that its international suspension will be revoked in March after ICC CEO Jeff Allardice recently held "constructive" discussions with the country's president Ranil Wickremesinghe and sports minister Harin Fernando. The ICC had suspended Sri Lanka in November last year citing political interference in its functioning, and subsequently the U-19 World Cup scheduled here was also shifted to South Africa. After his meeting with Allardice, Fernando posted on X (formerly Twitter) that he had a "constructive discussion and a way forward for SLC." Allardice will now submit his findings to the ICC board which is due to meet in March and the suspension of Sri Lanka is likely to be on the agenda among other things.

In fact, this was the second time an ICC official visited the island nation to ascertain the level of political intrusion into cricket administration in the country.

Imran Khwaja, the ICC Deputy Chair, had paid a visit to the country around June last year to study the turbulent cricketing scenario here.

In November last year, Fernando's predecessor Roshan Ranasinghe had wanted to replace the entire SLC board with an interim committee headed by former captain Arjuna Ranatunga.

However, the move was stayed by the country's court of appeal.

The ICC subsequently suspended SLC, a decision that had the support of some Lankan officials.

Ranasinghe was eventually removed from his position, which revived hopes of the suspension being revoked in the next ICC board meeting.

SRI LANKA CRICKET SUSPENSION LIFTED

The International Cricket Council (ICC) Board has today lifted the suspension of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) with immediate effect.

SLC was suspended in November for being in serious breach of its obligations as an ICC Member, in particular, the requirement to manage its affairs autonomously and ensure that there is no government interference in the governance, regulation and / or administration of cricket in Sri Lanka.

The Board have been monitoring the situation since the suspension and are now satisfied that SLC are no longer in breach of membership obligations.

Jayasuriya takes over as Interim Head Coach

Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to announce the appointment of Mr. Sanath Jayasuriya as the ‘Interim Head Coach’ of the National Team. He will function in the position until the completion of Sri Lanka’s tour of England in September 2024.

Jayasuriya is currently serving as the full-time ‘Cricket Consultant’ of Sri Lanka Cricket. His new appointment comes into immediate effect.

“Sanath with his wealth of international cricketing experience is well positioned to guide the national team, until we find a permanent solution,” said Mr. Ashley De Silva, CEO, Sri Lanka Cricket

Sri Lanka's Former U19 Captain, Dhammika Niroshana, Shot Dead: Report

A piece of tragic news comes in from Sri Lanka where the nation's former under-19 cricket team captain, Dhammika Niroshana, was allegedly shot dead at his home on Tuesday night. The incident is said to have taken place at the former cricketer's Kanda Mawatha residence in Ambalangoda. Several local media reports have suggested that Niroshana was with his wife and two children at home when the incident took place. The person who killed Niroshana reportedly used a 12-bore firearm. After coming to know of the matter, the police rushed to the spot and have sent the body for autopsy. No further information is yet available.

Niroshana was seen as one of the finest pace bowling all-rounders to have come out of Sri Lanka's youth system. During age-group cricket, he said to have led the likes of Farvez Maharoof, Angelo Mathews, Upul Tharanga, etc. He quit the sport at the age of 20.

Niroshana played a total of 12 first-class games and 8 List A matches for the Galle Cricket Club between 2001 and 2004. A fine all-rounder, who could deliver with both the bat and the ball, Niroshana scored more than 300 runs and picked up 19 wickets during his active career.

He made his debut for the Sri Lanka's U19 side in 2000 and also featured in a handful of under-19 Tests and ODI for two years.

Will we see another leadership change in Sri Lanka after series with India?

SL have been very disorganized after likes of Sanga, Mahela, Dilshan, Herath, Malinga etc. retired.

There used to be a stability in the team. That is not present anymore.

Lankan cricket was on its knees, and they comeback like this, one of the best ODI series win ever, also the manner in which they’ve won so comfortably against the WC runners up 👀

Sanath has bought them back from the dead bah gawd almighty

SL board shouldn't have been banned in the first place.

It is hypocritical to ban SLCB while giving a free pass to BCCI (which is just as political if not more).

Sri Lanka Cricket appointed former England batsman Ian Bell as the ‘Batting Coach’ of the national team for the ongoing tour.

He will start working with the team on August 16th and remain until the conclusion of the three-test match series.

The former England batsman has played in 118 test matches and scored 7727 runs at an average of 42.69.

He has 22 test centuries under his belt.

“We appointed Ian to bring in a person with local knowledge to help the players with key insights on the conditions there. Ian has a lot of experience playing in England, and we believe his inputs will help our team in this crucial tour,” said Mr. Ashley De Silva, CEO, Sri Lanka Cricket

Sri Lanka fielding coach Anton Roux steps down

Sri Lanka national team's fielding coach Anton Roux on Wednesday announced his resignation. Roux was appointed as Lanka fielding coach on March 7, 2022.

Born in USA, Roux played domestic cricket in South Africa. Though he never played for South Africa national side, but he featured in four first-class matches and as many List-A games. After retirement as a player, he coached the Netherlands cricket team from 2013 to 2016 and had also served as the assistant fielding coach of Nottinghamshire county. He also served as an assistant coach of Otago in New Zealand domestic cricket.

Speaking about his decision to quit as Sri Lanka fielding coach, Roux said he decided to step down on August 14, 2024 and the current week will be his last with Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC).

His decision to quit from his post indicated that the third and final Test at the Oval, where Sri Lanka beat England by eight wickets was his last international game with Sri Lanka team. Lanka claimed their maiden Test win over hosts England in a decade.

Sharing his memory in Sri Lanka, he revealed the incredible series win against Australia on home soil was a great moment. Reaching two Asia Cup finals and winning the Asia Cup in 2022 was very satisfying too.

He also lauded Sri Lanka women's team for winning their maiden Asia Cup recently. He informed that his second son Aiden was born during his stay in Sri Lanka, which he termed as a beautiful country.

Roux thanked Sri Lanka Cricket, players, former cricketers and people of the island nation for their love and adulation during his stay. Sri Lanka will always be a nice memory for him, Roux summed up.
