The International Cricket Council (ICC) today confirmed the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia 2020 has been postponed due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic

Windows for next three ICC Men’s events agreed to support rescheduling of bilateral cricket
ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 moved to October – November 2023 to allow longer qualification period

At today’s meeting of the IBC Board (the commercial subsidiary of the ICC), windows for the next three ICC men’s events were also agreed to bring clarity to the calendar and give the sport the best possible opportunity over the next three years to recover from the disruption caused by COVID-19.

The windows for the Men’s events are:

ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 will be held October – November 2021 with the final on 14 November 2021

ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 will be held October – November 2022 with the final on 13 November 2022

ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 will be held in India October – November 2023 with the final on 26 November 2023

The IBC Board agreed to continue to monitor the rapidly changing situation and assess all the information available in order to make a considered decision on future hosts to ensure the sport is able to stage safe and successful global events in 2021 and 2022.

The IBC Board will also continue to evaluate the situation in relation to being able to stage the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2021 in New Zealand in February next year. In the meantime, planning for this event continues as scheduled.

ICC Chief Executive Manu Sawhney said: “We have undertaken a comprehensive and complex contingency planning exercise and through this process, our number one priority has been to protect the health and safety of everyone involved in the sport.

“The decision to postpone the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup was taken after careful consideration of all of the options available to us and gives us the best possible opportunity of delivering two safe and successful T20 World Cups for fans around the world.

“Our Members now have the clarity they need around event windows to enable them to reschedule lost bilateral and domestic cricket. Moving the Men’s Cricket World Cup to a later window is a critical element of this and gives us a better chance of maintaining the integrity of the qualification process. This additional time will be used to reschedule games that might be lost because of the pandemic ensuring qualification can be decided on the field of play.

“Throughout this process we have worked closely with our key stakeholders including governments, Members, broadcasters, partners and medical experts to enable us to reach a collective decision for the good of the game and our fans. I would like to thank everyone involved for their commitment to a safe return to cricket.”

Wasted BCCI's precious time which would have gone in to planning of IPL by delaying the inevitable postponement of WC. ICC needs to buck up and become professional.

Congratulations BCCI. Now you can host your flagship T20 tournament to save world cricket

ICC postpones T20 WC, paves way for BCCI to organise IPL 2020 in Sep-Nov

ICC on Monday postponed the Men’s T20 World Cup 2020, scheduled to take place in Australia from October 18 to November 11, in view of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. The decision was taken at the ICC’s board meeting, held via teleconference.

The global T20 event was scheduled to take place from October 18 to November 15 in Australia, but the country's cricket board had in May expressed its inability to host the tournament amid a second surge of Covid-19 cases in the state of Victoria.

The postponement of the T20 World Cup, meanwhile, has paved the way for the Board of Contrl for Cricket in India (BCCI) to organise the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2020) in the September-October window.

How can you host one tournament and not the other one?

3 consecutive years with ICC tournaments in the same months of the year and WC in India in Oct-Nov as well. :broad

Babar Azam has some captaincy commitments coming up. :misbah3

Not to forget two test championship finals are gonna take place as well in these three years. If only ICC can squeeze in a Champions Trophy as well somewhere then that would be perfect.

What if he wins 2/3 trophies?

Surely he’d become Pakistan’s best captain...

Pakistan should be awarded with more 60 TEST Championship points for the previous test series against Bangladesh as 2nd test of the is unlikely to happen now.
This will take Pakistan closer to 2nd place and eventually for test championship finals.

Congratulations to all Pyjama League Fans. You fought for it and deserve to watch 2 IPL's within next 8 months. Enjoy.

Greed 1 - Cricket 0 :inti

I'm flattered yet sad at the same time to see this level of clout the IPL has now that it supercedes a World T20.

Was really looking forward to World T20

The right decision. The IPL should only happen in India if covid19 cases have been reduced.

The right call. The logistics behind properly securing 16 teams + coaching staff in the limited amount of time, just wasn't feasible

Canceled the lesser important tournament T20 world cup to make way for the most important one , IPL, makes sense, sad.

Cricket's worst-kept secret and not a surprise at all.

IPL instead of the T20 World Cup?

Hopefully Malik and Hafeez are kicked out of the team after this

Great news for Pakistan

Cricket South Africa (CSA) has welcomed the decisions taken by the ICC Board today which provide clarity on the windows for the major ICC events to be played over the next few years.

The next two editions of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup will take place in the October-November window in 2021 and 2022 respectively, while the 2023 ICC Men’s World Cup will take place in October-November 2023. The 2021 ICC Women’s World Cup remains in New Zealand in February 2021 as originally scheduled.

“These decisions provide just the clarity we need not only to revise our own Future Tours Programme but to see that our Proteas Men and Momentum Proteas Women have the best possible preparation for in these important tournaments,” commented CSA Acting Chief Executive Dr. Jacques Faul.

“A number of series for both our Proteas Men and Women have had to be postponed because of the coronavirus and I would like to assure all our stakeholders that we are planning for an exciting future both at international and domestic level.”

Looks like its the most sensible decision considering the circumstances. World cup is a spectacle and a spectacle is not possible behind closed doors. IPL is a necessity now for the money factor.

Considering the situation we are in, necessity should be given preference over spectacle and ICC done exactly that.

Necessity for who?

Necessity for who?

BCCI, Sponsors, broadcaster, commentators, contracted players (both Indian and international), Emirates cricket board, groundstaff etc.

Ofcourse as a fan we would prefer World cup more but apart from fans (who has nothing at stake), everyone involved would want IPL over WT20.

ICC Says If Australia Hosts T20 World Cup In 2021, Tickets Bought Will Remain Valid

The tickets bought by the fans for the now-postponed ICC T20 World Cup will remain valid if Australia hosts the edition in 2021 instead of India. In case the event is shifted to 2022, all ticket holders will be entitled to full refund, the ICC stated in a FAQ on their website. The ICC has not yet announced which country will host which edition as there are operational issues which both cricket Boards need to sort out. The ICC had already opened ticket booking through their ticketing partners and a significant number of tickets have been already sold.

"Ticket holders are welcome to retain their tickets, noting, if Australia hosts in 2021, tickets will remain valid for fans who have already bought and will be automatically updated to reflect the new dates.

"If Australia hosts in 2022, for tickets already bought a full refund will be processed automatically," ICC stated in a series of FAQs. Fans can retain their tickets until a date has been confirmed for the event. Refund requests can be made up until 15 December 2020 and they will be processed within 30 days after online submission.

The hospitality package will also remain valid for the 2021 fixture.

All of these would cease to exist without IPL?

It is better to cancel all major events this year. COVID-19 cases are still quite high worldwide.

Fair decision. But my question is, how did the BCCI know this two months ago?

Will India host in 2021 and Australia in 2022? Are the groups that were made for the 2020 edition going to move on to the 2021 edition?

From Cricket Australia:

Cricket Australia accepts the decision of the International Cricket Council to postpone the Men’s Twenty20 World Cup in Australia.

The ICC reached the decision on Monday evening in response to the challenges presented by the global COVID-19 pandemic.

Australia was due to host the Men’s T20 World Cup this year, however that tournament will now be postponed with a new date to be announced in due course.

Australia and India remain hosts of the next two events, but which country hosts which year is still to be determined in order to allow the ICC to continue to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and increase the chance of staging two successful T20 World Cups.

Nick Hockley, the interim chief executive of Cricket Australia and chief executive of the ICC T20 World Cup 2020, expressed confidence that Australia would host an outstanding tournament when a revised date is set.

“The COVID-19 pandemic is impacting sporting tournaments across the globe and cricket is not immune,” Hockley said. “The complexities and risks around hosting a 16-team international event in October in the current environment ultimately proved sufficient for the ICC to postpone the event.

“A lot of hard work has gone into hosting the tournament in Australia this year and I would like to thank everyone involved for their passion and commitment. The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup earlier this year will forever be remembered as a groundbreaking moment in Australian sport, and I have no doubt the men’s edition will also be a spectacular event.

“We accept the ICC’s decision to postpone the T20 World Cup in Australia. It was a decision made with the safety and wellbeing of fans, players, officials and staff in mind.

“We are confident that with this decision, we will give ourselves the best chance to safely welcome fans into the outstanding venues across the country to enjoy watching the world’s best men’s cricketers compete in this major global event in either 2021 or 2022.

“Cricket Australia now looks forward to hosting a safe and successful summer of bi-lateral cricket.”

“It's been a challenging time for everyone. We would like to thank all the fans who purchased tickets and supported the T20 World Cup in 2020.

“We would like to thank our government partners and venues for their understanding. We will continue to work closely with them to use the same Host City and Venue footprint established for the 2020 tournament, to the fullest extent possible.”

IPL is cancer for World cricket. And Ganguly is acting like the new Srinivasan. Destroying World cricket to benefit one country and its rockstar players

Nobody cares about IPL.

Was really looking forward to WT20 with such little international cricket nowadays...

You would have point if there was no corona virus or bcci not moving ipl to uae .Icc is spineless but can hardly blame them

IPL can’t and won’t happen this year for same reasons why the World T20 Cup is being postponed.

On another note, are Indians really that crass to enjoy a stupid t20 domestic league over a tournament that involves international teams?

People really thought that the WC was going to happen this year that too ahead of the IPL like seriously :))

ICC got greedy and deciede to have two World T20's in consecutive years and posters had no issues with that. But BCCI wants IPL = epitome of greed :srini

Pak management need to take a tough call on Malik and Hafeez now. I really hope for sake of Pakistan cricket we use this window of opportunity and build a team that would compete in 3 world tournaments spanning over 3 years.

Inevitable decision. There's simply no way you could hold a World Cup without any spectators, or biosecure 16 teams flying in from around the world.

I've given up on Pakistan's selectors ever disposing of Malik and Hafeez themselves. The only way those two leave is when they retire.

It's astonishing that two utterly mediocre players are able to dictate terms of their exit, when they should've been booted out years ago.

IPL is almost and unofficially confirmed from 26 sept in UAE. So its definitely happening.

Cant speak for all Indians but in any other year I would prefer world cup over IPL. But the strange year we are in, IPL is need of the hour for the reasons I mentioned above.

Was expected to happen to be fair. Whether we like or not, T20 World Cup being postponed makes sense. What doesn't make sense is having two consecutive T20 World Cup in two years. One for 2021 no 2022.

With this being said, IPL being played is the clear obvious whether we like it or not. Its safer than the T20 World Cup. But with the constant rise Covid-19 in India, unlikely that fans will come and watch. Not gonna make it a spectacle to watch.

This delay in the tournament could be very useful for Pakistan cricket. We now have a window to develop our youngsters (a core group of 10 players) to ideally represent us across 3 world tournaments over 3 years. I hope Pakistan management is proactive in here rather than reactive.

I would say the reason that vast number of Indian fans gravitate towards IPL is because of the local aspect of it. It is completely catered for them. They will watch a lot more games night in night out because of Indian players involved.

The same likely cannot be said of WCT20. I would say that the a good majority would just watch India matches and maybe one or two other matches.

This is purely a guess on my part though.

Good luck taking away a T20 tournament from the ICC. They will stage as many as they can. Now if you want to take away the Test Championship final from them, they will gladly do that.

Only arrogant fans can enjoy IPL over WT20. :inti

ICC is the head of all boards whereas BCCI is an individual board. If ICC makes money it will be distributed among all boards. Learn to differentiate first before acting like yet another arrogant IPL fan. :inti

Good decision by ICC. There is no way hosts could have taken such a huge risk. Biosecuring 10+ teams from different countries is a huge risk.

ICC is not the head of any board. BCCi looks after its interests and is well within its rights to do so. If its a choice between World T20 and IPL, they would do anything in their power to have the IPL. Just because I think the BCCI is right about this doesn't make me an IPL fan. I barely watch the thing. The world is not neatly split between pro IPL and anti IPL fans. Don't spend so much time with :inti

Lol you clearly said ICC got greedy. ICC runs cricket and BCCI is their member which means whatever ICC do, they do it for all of them. BCCI on the other hand is looking after it's interest without caring about others. BCCI used to host IPL from Apr-June, but due to covid they have now decided to host it between Sep-Nov lol. When are we going to play international cricket then? Who is greedy here? ICC or BCCI? :inti

In December when we tour Downunder to retain the Border-Gavaskar trophy (subjected to toss). But no international cricket will be played before the all important IPL. As I said from first day, as and when cricket returns.....IPL is the 1st tournament Indian players will play. Other teams are free to organize international cricket at that time though :srini

In the post Covid world , everyone is going to struggle. BCCI should do whatever is in their financial interest. World t20 is not going to do jack for BCCI. IPL most probably will. i don't see what is so difficult to comprehend. They have already given clearance to the India-Australia tour so there you have international cricket.

Lol who isn't? All the boards are and ICC most certainly are considering they wanted a world tournament every year - making these tournamnts meaningless.

Right on. I agree with you there. The ICC is one of the worst. They do very little to no work and just kiss the rear end of the BCCI to keep the $$$ inflowing. Same goes for all boards about greed for $$.

A good example is the Eng vs WI series and the upcoming one with Pak. Only reason they are doing this is so they do not miss out on the $$$ from Sky.

India cares about the IPL, the rest of the world does not. It is irrelevant to the rest of world cricket.

Absolutely. Not just the IPL, but all these domestic T20 leagues are catered to a specific set of audience. Which is pretty much local to the country its played in.

I would say IPL and PSL are a bit different because they also appeal to a sizeable amount of expat audience in the UK, USA, Canada etc. I am sure a league like IPL make a very good amount of $$ selling broadcasting rights in these countries. Especially USA.

Yep, I'm sure Indians wouldn't be too happy about the WT20 being cancelled for the BBL or CPL.

Kohli wont be too happy either as he's going to be a year older come the next WT20 and when it is held in India he will be 34.

Shoaib Akhtar on the postponement of the T20 World Cup:

“Ultimately a powerful man, or a powerful cricket board they run the policy and they make sure they you suffer. T20 WC and Asia Cup could have been played this year, this was a chance for India and Pakistan to play against each other but they let it go. There are a lot of reasons behind this I don’t want to go into details.

“T20 WC could have been played but me and Rashid have said this repeatedly that they won’t let it happen, it won’t happen. IPL shouldn’t get damaged, the T20 World Cup can go to hell. India needs to save cricket immediately otherwise it won’t affect my era,” he said.

“The quality of cricket will decline but people will continue to make millions of dollars from the sport. Even the following will reduce just like it did in Pakistan after the 2017 Champions Trophy triumph,”

Quite hillarious from Shoaib tbh. WT20 postponement has got nothing to do with IPL.

How can it be irrelevant to rest of the world if all of them are participating in IPL and looking forward to it..

No one is looking forward to ipl except Indians and the foreign players playing in that league due to the money they will make that is it

LOL says who? No one outside India watches IPL. Only international players benefit from it and that's because they make millions for 6 weeks of meaningless cricket where the results are forgotten the next day.

I don't care if no one out of India watches IPL or not.All I care is IPL taking place with the best players from the world participating in it. I enjoy it immensely and look forward to it.

No one watches outside India yet Super sports paid more for IPL rights than it was willing to pay for now defunct GlobalT20 league of SA.

No one watches IPL thats why broadcasters from around the world lined up to bid for the rights.

You don't watch, thats fine. Doesn't mean others dont watch.

Again it's only Indians and just Indians who live in India but Indias who are all across the world USA South Africa Dubai etc but again only Indian people watch it, you can't compare to a world event only a foolish person would do that

IPL is mainly for the national rags and also all those around the world, it is for a niche ethnic group of people, they are just too many of them hence the tv deals etc however outside that ethnic group am pretty sure most would much rather see the World T20

The heads of BCCI and Cricket Australia will be connecting virtually to discuss the hosting of two T20 World Cups in the next two years when the ICC’s all-powerful board meets on Friday. The decision will also be impacted by the stand of the two boards on the next ICC chairman, the nomination process of which is yet to be announced formally. It is expected that BCCI president Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah along with CA’s Earl Eddings and Nick Hockley will reach a consensus on the hosting of 2021 and 2022 editions.

“The the main agenda of the meeting is scheduling of ICC tournaments including the women’s ODI World Cup in New Zealand early next year. It is expected that some decisions will be taken,” an ICC Board member told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

The ICC World T20 which was scheduled to be held in Australia from October 18 this year was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, making way for the cash rich Indian Premier League, to be held from September 19 in the United Arab Emirates.

It is expected that Cricket Australia will like to host the T20 World Cup in October 2021 as it had already started preparations and wouldn’t like to wait for two years but BCCI also doesn’t want to forego its right to host the tournament in 2021.

“The BCCI was originally scheduled to host the T20 World Cup in 2021 and they would like to go ahead. Another reason being, hosting a T20 World Cup in 2022 and then a 50 over global event within a gap of just one year. It would be an overkill,” another ICC board member said.

However for Cricket Australia, it also has a few points in its favour. “The ICC website states that those who have booked match tickets for Australia World T20 event should wait till further announcement. The reason being CA wants to host the event next year,” he said. It is also learnt that there is a good chance that the eight-team Women’s ODI World Cup in New Zealand in February-March 2021 will go ahead as per schedule.

“Yes, the qualification tournament is yet to be finished and since every country’s Covid situation is different, that is one headache that the ICC has. Going by health safety issues, New Zealand is one of the best performing nations globally,” he said.
