ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2021 | Day 1 | 17 October, 2021 | Matches Discussion

Bangladesh - 109/5 after 18 overs (target: 141).

32 runs are needed from final 2 overs.

I can't believe this is same Bangladesh team that has recently beaten Australia and New Zealand .

Scotland has some very good cricketers. Can upset more teams.

The surprising thing is they are winning from 53/6.

Never underestimate an opponent - Bangladesh.

Well this is unexpected result honestly..would love to see them qualify though..World cup is incomplete without some Bangladesh drama..

I guess those pitches during the Aus/NZ didn’t help Bangladesh. Decent pitches could half given there team some better batting practice. Just tells you how terrible the management messed up by having dirt trackes at Home.

Mr Pappon will come up now with some rubbish talks. This team will be beaten by Nepal once the old 4 veterans retire

Many stupid fans were jumping up and down over some meaningless wins against Australia C team and NZ B team.

Serves them right.

What a match! Fantastic stuff Scotland. Deserved winners, had bangladesh on the choke since the start of the innings. Congratulations!

What a night for Greaves. Saved the match for Scotland. They were dead and burried when he came out to bat. Bowled economically and got Shakib and Mushy as well.

Scotland were 53/6..

How do you lose from there? Truly dreadful. Worse than when they lost a test to Afghanistan on home soil a while back.

Anyways, feel happy for Scotland.

Athar Ali Khan holding back tears :))

The guy literally said Bangladesh is some mighty piller and has beaten the likes of NzLand and Australia at home and i was like say what??? And then claimed scotland did an upset. Bro the fact that your team is playing the qualifiers speaks volumes about them being any “pillar”

I missed the last overs. Nonetheless, interesting start to the tournament on Day 1.

What an embarrassing defeat. This will hurt bad . Worst defeat for BD

Incredible comeback from Scotland. Not a surprise that Greaves has a South African accent

So here we go, the 2nd best Asian team :)) humbled by the Saltires. Tough night for the tigers. Maybe a group Nagin dance to lift up the spirits.

Oman have already beaten PNG by a huge margin..

If Scotland also beats PNG by a big margin and Oman beat Scotland, Bangladesh will find it hard to qualify even if they win their remaining two games.

:)) I actually laughed at that. Calling yourself mighty piller while you play in the qualifier rounds.

He was trying to boost his ego that oh we beat Australia and NZ. We all know how they beat Australia.

Bangladesh is the most undeserving team to play international cricket. Just because asian lobby of administrators needed an extra vote, so they got Bdesh test status on the basis of a shameful win, we all know how they won the 1999 match against Pakistan. Bangladesh deserves this humiliation tbh.

Yeah man, the guy is seriously deluded :uakmal

This just goes to show how much the associates have improved, any team that takes the associates lightly is gonna to get the shock of their lives.

Bangladesh are still a good team and should do well in this tournament, they've got a good team for these conditions. I would say let us not jump the gun after just one game. Let's see if they prove me right.

Couldn't agree more. Their domestic circuit is rife with allegations of corruption. Some of the players have an attitude bigger than Mt. Everest. Time to kick them out and have them compete with the affiliates for any major ICC tournament.

It actually goes to show how strong South Africa can be if they abolish their quota system.

What in the world, BD??

I do feel for them though. I hope they beat Oman and qualify

Bangladesh approach to chasing was pathetic. Shakib and Mishfiqur did not try anything in PP. Never tried to put the pressure on Scotland. Dot after dot. They scored 25 runs in PP. Even if they had lost 3-4 wickets in PP but scored 45-50 it would have been much better.

It cost them in the end.

Scotland beating Bangladesh is an anomaly, precisely why T20 is nothing but a joke. Yes scots have improved and have a good system but I’m sure results of a test match are more or less certain. Anyways I never liked Bangladeshi team.

Greaves is the only player in the Scottish team that was born in South Africa and moved away from there after the age of 18.

This is why BCCI needs to let cricket expand which of course they wont because their pie gets smaller in the short-term. They need to see the bigger picture.

Okay no need to get carried away now. Yes, they lost but it happens. They're the same team that played and gave India a tough time in the last 2 Asia cup finals.

I'm sure most Indians/Pakistanis would still prefer Scotland over Bangladesh in their group any day of the week.

Scotland have chased a score above 350 against England in an odi
They are a good team that deserve more chances against test playing nations

Mate that's the job of the ICC, it is a joke that only 10 nations played the 50 over world cup last time and will do so again in 2023. This 1st round is also not fair to all associates as it is more of another Qualifier before the main round.

ICC only cares about money and money is to see the so called top teams play each other over and over again, associates do not have a larger audience and the ICC don't care.

If they keep beating the top teams though, it will eventually matter and ICC will be forced to give them more opportunities.

Playing in just his second international, 31-year-old Chris Greaves was the star of the show with the bat and ball as Scotland beat Bangladesh by six runs in the second game of Round 1 of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2021.

In their first game of the tournament, Scotland scripted an outstanding comeback to put two points on board in the Group B game against Bangladesh.

Scotland, who were 53/6 after 12 overs, fought back strongly to put up a challenging target of 141 for Bangladesh on the back of a 51-run stand between Chris Greaves and Mark Watt for the seventh wicket.

With the bat, Bangladesh were always behind the eight ball as Scotland bowled brilliantly to keep The Tigers at bay. In the end, the asking rate was too much for the lower-order batters as Scotland put two points on the board with a six-run win.

Early wickets peg Bangladesh back

Scotland needed early wickets if they were to stop Bangladesh from cruising in their chase. Soumya Sarkar was the first batter to make the long walk back after flicking the ball straight into the hands of deep mid-wicket. Two overs later, Liton Das tried to take the aerial route but once again found Munsey at mid-off.

The Scotland bowlers managed to keep a lid on the scoring as Bangladesh went without a boundary for six overs. Mushfiqur Rahim finally broke the shackles with two sixes in two balls off Leask as The Tigers went into the drinks break at 59/2.

Chris Greaves' day out

After bailing Scotland out of trouble with the bat, Greaves turned the game around with the ball in hand with two quick wickets.

With the required rate climbing, Shakib and Rahim had to up the scoring and in their bid to do so, lost their wickets at a crucial juncture.

Luck was on Greaves' side as a Shakib failed to put away a half-tracker and hit it to Calum MacLeod who completed a good running catch on the boundary. In his very next over, Greaves got his second as the experienced Rahim lost his wicket playing all around a pre-meditated ramp shot.

Shakib, Mahedi spin a web as Scotland's middle-order collapses

Earlier, Bangladesh won the toss and opted to field against Scotland in the second game of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2021.

Bangladesh's decision to go with an extra pacer reaped rewards right away. Mohammad Saifuddin struck early, after Taskin Ahmed and Mustafizur Rahman kept a leash on Scotland's scoring. Skipper Kyle Coetzer had no answer to Saifuddin's inch-perfect yorker and had to walk back without scoring.

George Munsey and Matthew Cross consolidated the innings and then made full use of the fielding restrictions, scoring 23 in the last overs of the Powerplay.

Scotland lost their set batters in quick succession as Mahedi Hasan made an immediate impact after being brought into the attack. He first trapped Cross in front of the stumps before knocking over Munsey with an arm-ball.

Two overs later, Shakib Al Hasan added yet another feather to his cap. He levelled Lasith Malinga for most wickets in Men's T20Is with the scalp of Richie Berrington before surpassing the Sri Lankan pacer two balls later with the wicket of Michael Leask.

Scotland slipped further after they lost Calum MacLeod, going from 45/1 to 53/6.

Greaves, Watt steer Scotland out of trouble

Scotland were staring down the barrel at the end of the 12th overs before Chris Greaves and Mark Watt bailed them out of trouble. Going at well below six runs per over, Greaves and Watt upped the ante and kept finding the boundaries.

After taking the team past the 100-run mark, they brought up the 50-run partnership in just 33 balls with a boundary. After Watt's dismissal, Greaves took the attack to Taskin Ahmed with two fours and a six off the next three balls.

Mustafizur Rahman got rid of Greaves and Josh Davey in the final over to ensure Scotland don't end their innings with a flourish as they finished on 140/9.

Scotland next face PNG on Tuesday, October 19, while Bangladesh take on co-hosts Oman in the second match of the same day.

Bangladesh let things slip at key times today.

Maybe it was over-confidence or the pressure got to them.

The match against Oman won't be easy and they need to up their game against a dangerous opponent.

I hope they do qualify for the Super 12s.
