Bangladesh and Papua New Guinea feature in their final match of the Group B first round, with an entry to Super 12 to play for.

Beaten by Scotland in their opening match and given a scare by Oman early in their second, Bangladesh's hopes of making it to the Super 12 round depend on putting together a comprehensive show against PNG at the Oman Cricket Academy Ground.

Bangladesh go into the match third on the four-team table with two points, behind Oman on run-rate. If they lose, they are out of the tournament. Even if they win on Thursday, given that a situation could arise with three teams on four points each, they will have an eye on the net run rate.

PNG for their part are taking inspiration from Scotland, as well as the fight they themselves showed in the previous game against the same opponents. Two days ago, they came back from 35/5 to nearly chase down 166.

The World Cup debutants aren't mathematically out of the competition yet. However, their priority is getting their first win at a World Cup and against a strong T20 side rather than going for a risky net run rate boost.

"It will be history in the making to win at least a game in the World Cup," said Charles Amini. "So that would be the first thing. Whatever happens after that is not in our control. We'll try to do our best. If there's an opportunity in us qualifying for the next stage with the net run rate, we'll obviously try to work towards that."

Fixture details
Match: Bangladesh v Papua New Guinea
Time: 14:00 local time on Thursday 21 October
Venue: Oman Cricket Academy Ground, Al Amerat

The Teams

Bangladesh have done well in patches, but are yet to put together a complete batting performance. They made a change at the top last game, but the openers are yet to click in tandem to maximise the Powerplay. The form of Shakib Al Hasan in the middle order is a positive, but they could use more hitting at the death. While they may not make changes to their XI, there may be a reshuffle in the batting order.

Probable Bangladesh XI: Mohammad Naim, Liton Das, Shakib Al Hasan, Nurul Hasan (wk), Afif Hossain, Mahmudullah (capt), Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahedi Hasan, Mohammad Saifuddin, Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman

PNG have suffered a string of losses this year and their top order have showed a tendency to collapse. Their batters will need to rediscover their touch and play with more game awareness if they are to compete against Bangladesh.

Probable PNG XI: Tony Ura, Lega Siaka, Assad Vala (capt), Charles Amini, Sese Bau, Simon Atai, Norman Vanua, Kiplin Doriga (wk), Chad Soper, Nosaina Pokana, Kabua Morea

Key Players

Mohammad Naim, Bangladesh's left-hand opener, made fifty in his first game of the tournament, striking four sixes and affording the team some stability at the top. Given the importance of maximising the Powerplay, Bangladesh will expect consistency from him.

Chad Soper, PNG's pace-bowling all-rounder, played his first game of the tournament and made an impact with both bat and ball. Bowling at the Powerplay and the death, he picked up three vital wickets. Then, coming in at No.9, he dug into his experience to clear the ropes and add valuable runs.

The Ladder Situation

What will a win mean for Bangladesh?

If Bangladesh win, they have a good chance of going into the Super 12. Depending on the other result, they could even progress as the top team in the group, having given their net run rate a boost.

What will a win mean for PNG?

Even a win may not be enough for PNG to continue their run in the tournament. They will have to win with a significant margin and have the result of the other match in the group go their way.

What they said

Charles Amini: "It's probably the biggest opportunity, as far as the games that we've had so far. This will be our first test as a team against one of the best T20 teams going. Although they lost their first game, they're still a good team, and we're really looking forward to this opportunity tomorrow. Scotland caused an upset in the first game, and we're pretty sure that we can also do the same thing."

Shakib Al Hasan: "I have to give a lot of credit to Associate countries for the way they manage to play cricket despite adversities. They played good cricket. There's a lot more expectations from us as a Test-playing country. We try to win but its not always possible. When we beat bigger teams, they probably feel this way. That's cricket for you."

History beckons for both Oman and Scotland as a place in Super 12 stage is up for grabs going into the last game of their group.

On the back of two impressive wins, Scotland will lock horns against home side Oman in the last Group B game before the Super 12 stage. Scotland will be aiming to keep their 100 per cent win record intact and subsequently storm into the next stage without the fuss of net run-rates.

Oman began their tournament with an imperious 10-wicket win against Papua New Guinea and showed valiant fight against Bangladesh on Tuesday before falling 26 short of the target. With more than a realistic chance of progressing further in the tournament, expect Oman to give their all.

Having played and trained in Muscat for more than five weeks in ICC Cricket World Cup League 2, Scotland will hope to bank on the familiarity of the conditions while Oman will have the backing of home support to rely on in a do-or-die contest.

Fixture details
Match: Oman v Scotland
Time: 18:00 local time on Tuesday 21 October
Venue: Oman Cricket Academy Ground, Al Amerat

The Teams
Oman’s batter Aaqib Ilyas hinted at the possibility of a pacer coming into the side and that could see a slot open up for Fayyaz Butt

Possible Oman XI: Zeeshan Maqsood (c), Aqib Ilyas, Jatinder Singh, Khawar Ali, Kashyap Prajapati, Naseem Khushi (wk), Mohammad Nadeem, Ayaan Khan, Fayyaz Butt, Kaleemullah, Bilal Khan

For Scotland, the team is likely to remain the same and they would be hoping there is no change in the results as well.

Possible Scotland playing XI: Kyle Coetzer (c), George Munsey, Matthew Cross, Richie Berrington, Calum MacLeod, Michael Leask, Chris Greaves, Mark Watt, Josh Davey, Safyaan Sharif, Brad Wheal

Key Players

After two quiet games, Callum MacLeod will be itching to get some runs under his name. With the experience of more than 50 T20I, MacLeod's ability to tackle the spinners is well known. The batters around him, like Matthew Cross, Richie Berrington and Chris Greaves, have all got runs in the tournament, helping lift the pressure off senior batter MacLeod. Nevertheless, he'll want to step up in this all-important match.

In the two innings he has batted, Jatinder Singh has look supremely comfortable in the middle, having scored 113 runs already. The opener doesn’t hold back with his shots and Oman will be hoping for him to continue his good run, laying down a platform for the team. He is in line to once again reclaim his lead as the highest run scorer in the tournament after Netherlands’ Max O’dwod went past him on Wednesday.

The Ladder Situation

Oman win

If Oman win, they will likely go straight to the top of the table on current NRR standings. However, if Bangladesh win by a big margin earlier in the day, Oman might finish second on the table but would be almost certain to qualify, with their 10-wicket victory against PNG having their NRR in good health.

Scotland win

If Scotland win, they will make it three in a row and the qualification will be a no-brainer then. However, different permutations and combinations open up if Scotland loses as it might find Oman, Bangladesh and Scotland all tied on four points and then the margins of wins and defeats will be the decisive factor as to which team progresses to the next stage.

What they Said

Aqib Ilyas, Oman star: "They have some good players on their side who are very aggressive. We have to look for them and we have to minimise our mistakes. If we minimise our mistakes we will win the match.

Shane Burger, Scotland head coach: “We've already created history in this tournament by winning two games. That's more than any Scottish team has done previously. We want to go one step further.”

Bangladesh will look to put all three phases of the game together and hit ‘full throttle’ when they face Papua New Guinea with a place in the Super 12 on the line, according to batting coach Ashwell Prince.

Bangladesh suffered a surprise six-run defeat to Scotland in their opening match at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 but overcame a wobble to rebound with a 26-run triumph over Oman.

Victory over PNG on Thursday would move them to four points and if Scotland beat Oman later the same day, then the Tigers would qualify for the Super 12 as runners-up in Group B and move into Group 1 as team B2.

However, if Bangladesh and Oman both win then three teams would be tied on four points, with net run-rate deciding who advances to the next stage.

And while Prince is keen to put as much pressure on the other teams as possible, he wants his side to firstly focus on producing a complete performance.

“We're not at full throttle yet,” said former South Africa international Prince. “We fancied ourselves in the first game to chase 140 against Scotland.

“They obviously came back well after being 53 for six, posted a competitive score and we were disappointed not to get that.

“We bounced back nicely yesterday (against Oman). It was a tough match. I think it was a lot of pressure in terms of playing against the home team and obviously going out of the competition if we lost the game.

“That was a big result for us but even so, there are still parts of our performance that we felt we could have done better at. Hopefully we will improve even tomorrow as we go into the final game.

“There is not much margin of difference in the run-rates of Scotland, Oman and Bangladesh but we have the equation within us, within the team and the players know exactly what to do.

“Unfortunately, we play the first game. We will have to do our bit and try and apply the pressure on to Scotland and Oman. But we have a fair idea of what we need to do.”

Bangladesh entered the tournament sixth in the MRF Tyres Men’s T20I Team Rankings and favourites to qualify for the Super 12 from Group B but Prince says nerves have played a part in the Tigers not producing their best cricket yet.

“Definitely in the first two fixtures there would have been nerves around,” he added. “Obviously we try and speak to the guys before the game to prepare them as much as possible.

“Bangladesh coming into this group as the Test-playing nation, you sort of have a target on your back, with the other teams coming after you. We realise that.

“Obviously Scotland put in a disciplined bowling and fielding performance but fortunately yesterday (against Oman) we got things going, and I think we're getting stronger at the moment.”

Despite defeats to Oman and Scotland so far, Papua New Guinea can still mathematically qualify for the next stage if they beat Bangladesh and Oman lose, although there would also need to be a huge turnaround in net run-rate.

PNG’s focus is simply on earning an historic win on their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup debut and experienced batter Charles Amini claims they are taking inspiration from Scotland.

“It's probably the biggest opportunity, I guess, as far as the games that we've had so far,” he said. “This will be our first test as a team against one of the best T20 teams going.

“Although they lost their first game, they're still a good team, and we're really looking forward to this opportunity.

“We're really proud of our efforts of making a World Cup. This is our first time at a World Cup and we've lost the first two games, but we still have a chance.

“Scotland caused an upset in the first game and we're pretty sure that we can also do the same thing.

“It will be history in the making to win at least a game in the World Cup. So that would be the first thing – whatever happens after that is not in our control.

“If there's an opportunity in us qualifying for the next stage with the net run rate, we'll obviously try to work towards that and winning in that way but we're just looking forward to trying to get a win for PNG.”

Bangladesh have won the toss and have opted to bat

Papua New Guinea (Playing XI): Lega Siaka, Assad Vala(c), Charles Amini, Sese Bau, Simon Atai, Hiri Hiri, Norman Vanua, Kiplin Doriga(w), Chad Soper, Kabua Morea, Damien Ravu

Bangladesh (Playing XI): Mohammad Naim, Liton Das, Mahedi Hasan, Shakib Al Hasan, Nurul Hasan(w), Afif Hossain, Mahmudullah(c), Mushfiqur Rahim, Mohammad Saifuddin, Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman

No team can take anything for granted, imagine Scotland can still get knocked out today should they lose to Oman and if Bangladesh beat PNG.

OMAN'S NRR is still good to ensure them a place should they beat Scotland today.

BAN 54/2 (8) CRR: 6.75
Bangladesh opt to bat

loving this fielding effort from PNG, they have been bang on the whole game, minus 1 missfield which didnt cost any extra run.

PNG's bowling got hammered by Oman and Scotland. But, Bangladesh are struggling.

It shows issue is with Bangladeshi batting. Mirpur pitches probably ruined their batting.

This game shows Bangladesh are still reliant on veterans (Mahmudullah and Shakib).

Youngsters are not stepping up. That is a concerning sign.

Bangladesh have to win by 3 runs or more to confirm their qualification to next round.

PNG's fielding is awesome. They field better than many Test players.

Bangladesh - 161/7 after 19 overs.

Bangladesh may end up with Sri Lanka, West Indies, England, Australia, and South Africa.

I don't know why Bangladesh are playing Taskin here. Spinner Nasum is a better option for this type of pitch.

What is scenario to Bangladesh top the table?

If Scotland beat Oman, Scotland top the group regardless of NRR.

If Oman beat Scotland, BD can top the group if they have a better NRR than Oman and Scotland (which is now possible).

PNG - 13/2 after 3.2 overs (target: 182).

PNG lose their 2nd wicket. Great catch from keeper Nurul.

Correct.

Bangladesh finished 2nd is more realistic.

As I said even after Bangladesh's first loss that they are still a good team and should in turn beat some of the top nations in super 12.

Anyways that hasn't happened yet, but at least Bangla boys have easily qualified.

PNG batted better against Scotland and Oman.

They are looking very ordinary today.

Beating PNG doesn't mean you are good and beat top teams in WC. I see bangladesh loosing all matches in super 12 ( if they reached).

Yeah. I also think they may end up losing all Super 12 games. But, I hope they will win one or two at least.

On a slow track, they may trouble West Indies or South Africa.

BD will probably get a big win here. Good NRR boost.

So, if Oman beat Scotland by a small or moderate margin, BD should top the group.

First boundary for PNG. Came in 10th over of their innings.

PNG - 28/6 after 10 overs (target: 182).

Hiri Hiri. That's the name of one PNG player.

I have never seen such a name before. Both first name and last name are same.

PNG are unlikely to play another World Cup anytime soon. So, this was a good exposure for them.
