West Indies (137/5) secure a 5-wicket victory against Papua New Guinea (136/8) in a close encounter

The same guys hyping up the Windies before the WC here are those that criticise Pakistan day after day here.

Neither of them should be hyped, both have fallen a long way from the heady heights of dominating cricket in the 80's and 90's. They are on a quite similar path since then, struggling to keep pace with the modern game, and maintain interest in the game in their respective countries.

Hats off to Assad Vala. For marshalling his threadbare bowling resources and strangling the scariest batting lineup in this tournament

WI and Pakistan have 1 thing in common.

Both of them play right down to the level of their opposition.
Has been happening since 1990s. Even when we fielded our best team in 1999 WC we had problem beating the associate nations back then.

PNG look like they are being out muscled at the end.

But massive respect. They did very well.

That was a fatal misfield in the deep. Equation was tight for WI until then.

Shai Hope was gonna be WI's anchor but Chase now has that role.

I keep hearing that we were dominating cricket in 1990s. What cricket were we dominating? We lost 19996 WC, 1999 WC, 1998 CT. Lost home test series against Zimbabwe, Australia, Sri Lanka, drew against SAF at home. Lost away series against Australia, Sri Lanka. Our biggest achievement was wining against away series in England and Asian test championship and drawing an away series against SAF. We couldn’t even beat India in the world cups.

WI should have boosted their NRR in this match.... This NRR will play an important role in the qualification for the next round.

Match looks easy on paper.

But PNG were rocking.

One wicket and they had them.

Sides like PNG have not used DRS to the same extent as the top 10-12 sides.

Ultimately, their lack of experience in that regard probably cost them the match

Chase and Russell complete West Indies run chase against Papua New Guinea in T20 World Cup 2024 clash

Roston Chase and Andre Russell calmed West Indies' fears as they successfully chased down a target of 137, winning by five wickets against Papua New Guinea to give the co-hosts a winning start to their ICC Men's T20 World Cup campaign.

Papua New Guinea had set a reasonable target for them to chase, thanks mostly to Sese Bau who led the recovery after losing two early wickets to muster 136/8.

Bau came to the crease after Tony Ura was caught behind by Pooran off Romario Shepherd for 2, followed by Lega Siaka three balls later for 1 after a sizzling angled delivery from Akeal Hosein.

And he hit 50 - his fourth in the format for his country, including six fours and a six - before he was bowled by Alzarri Joseph with three and a half overs remaining.

Earlier, Andre Russell had taken the 50th wicket of his T20 international career when Charles Amini nicked behind on 12.

In the response, West Indies were perhaps not as assured as they would have liked.

Alei Nao had struck in the second over, removing Johnson Charles lbw for a duck - and could have had another had he opted to review another lbw shout three balls later, this one against Nicholas Pooran, which ball-tracking showed would have hit the stumps.

Brandon King made some in-roads, scoring 34 off 29 balls before his skied shot was caught by Lega Siaka off the bowling of captain Assad Vala.

Earlier, he had had able assistance from Nicholas Pooran, who had added a valuable 27 before his dismissal, caught by Tony Ura off a John Kariko delivery.

But West Indies found themselves on 97/5 with just four overs remaining after the loss of Rovman Powell and Sherfane Rutherford - and there were certainly some nerves in the camp.

It was left to Chase (42*) and Russell (15*) to complete the job.

"I'm very pleased. Starting the tournament with a win is always good. I needed to take it home for the team, and I did it," said Chase afterwards.

Papua New Guinea captain Assad Vala was obviously disappointed with the result but pleased with his team, saying: "We were very happy with the way we fought - we got wickets at key moments."
