The venue for ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 has been shifted to the United Arab Emirates and Oman, with the tournament set to run from 17 October to 14 November.

The tournament was originally set to be staged in India, but had to be shifted, given the consequences of the second wave of Covid-19 on the country.

The BCCI will remain the hosts of the event, which will now be held across four venues – Dubai International Stadium, the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi, the Sharjah Stadium, and the Oman Cricket Academy Ground.

The first round of the tournament, comprising the eight qualifying teams, will now be split between Oman and UAE. Four of these teams will then progress to the Super 12s round where they’ll join the eight automatic qualifiers.

The upcoming edition will be the first Men’s T20 World Cup played since 2016, when West Indies beat England in the final in India.

The eight teams competing in the preliminary stage are Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Ireland, Netherlands, Scotland, Namibia, Oman and Papua New Guinea, before the play-off stage and the Final on 14 November.

"Our priority is to deliver the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 safely, in full and in its current window," said acting ICC CEO Geoff Allardice. "Whilst we are incredibly disappointed not to be hosting the event in India, the decision gives us the certainty we need to stage the event in a country that is a proven international host of multi-team events in a bio-secure environment.

"We will work closely with the BCCI, the Emirates Cricket Board and Oman Cricket to ensure fans can enjoy a wonderful celebration of cricket.”

"The BCCI is looking forward to hosting the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 tournament in UAE and Oman," added BCCI President Sourav Ganguly. "We would have been happier hosting it in India but considering the uncertainty due to the Covid 19 situation and the importance of a world championship, the BCCI will now continue to host this tournament in UAE and Oman. The BCCI is looking forward to creating a spectacle."

The International Cricket Council (ICC) today confirmed that the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 will be staged in the UAE and Oman due to the ongoing COVID-19 situation in India. The BCCI will remain the hosts of the event, which will now be held in Dubai International Stadium, the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi, the Sharjah Stadium, and the Oman Cricket Academy Ground, from 17 October to 14 November 2021.

Acting ICC CEO Geoff Allardice said: “Our priority is to deliver the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 safely, in full and in its current window. Whilst we are incredibly disappointed not to be hosting the event in India, the decision gives us the certainty we need to stage the event in a country that is a proven international host of multi-team events in a bio-secure environment. We will work closely with the BCCI, the Emirates Cricket Board and Oman Cricket to ensure fans can enjoy a wonderful celebration of cricket.”

BCCI Secretary, Jay Shah, said: “The BCCI made every effort to stage the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in India and provide its passionate fans with a reason to cheer after a long period of gloom. However, the prevailing pandemic situation in the country meant that the health and safety of everyone concerned was fraught with risk should a tournament of this stature is held across the country. The BCCI will continue to host the tournament, which will now be held in the UAE and Oman and work closely with the ICC to make it a memorable event.”

President BCCI Sourav Ganguly said: “The BCCI is looking forward to hosting the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 tournament in UAE and Oman. We would have been happier hosting it in India but considering the uncertainty due to the Covid 19 situation and the importance of a world championship, the BCCI will now continue to host this tournament in UAE and Oman. The BCCI is looking forward to creating a spectacle.”

Vice President Emirates Cricket Board, Khalid Al Zarooni said: “Emirates Cricket Board is honoured that the BCCI (Board of Cricket Control India) and the ICC (International Cricket Council) have entrusted us with staging and delivering the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. The UAE’s reputation as being a safe country in which to host high-profile sporting events is a strong compliment to our government’s unwavering commitment to implementing and monitoring effective health practices during the pandemic. Having hosted a number of high-profile tournaments in recent months our team is well-prepared and ready to mobilise to ensure the success of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup.”

Oman Cricket Chairman, Pankaj Khimji said, “It is indeed a great moment for Oman Cricket to be selected as a venue/host of the forthcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. We shall leave no stone unturned to exceed the requirements of BCCI and ICC. Oman will certainly extend a very warm welcome to all the teams, officials and media in October.”

Oman has a proper Cricket stadium and seating capacity ? Interesting that now we have another country in the Gulf to host International Cricket.

Great chance for Pakistan to lift another ICC trophy. They have the team, style of play and conditions which suit them and their players have the most exposure to playing in UAE.

Pakistan's tournament to lose now, it will be a big upset if Pakistan don't win it in UAE .

Congratulations in advance to Pak Fans.

India stands as favourite to lift the trophy followed by Eng. India will be entering the tournament straight after playing IPL in same conditions which is another advantage. Also not to forget law of averages will have to come into play for India at some point of time as they have been getting to the knock out stages for sometime now but, haven’t lifted the trophy in those years.

Pak’s batsmen don’t enjoy UAE that much and also T20 team isnt much settled, not to forget before the recent leg of PSL Pak last played in UAE more than two years ago.

So another trophy where India will start as favourites or atleast one of then in my opinion and most cricketing experts would agree as well.

It will be the usual for us. Reach the semis.. then crash out and heart break.
No one to mend our broken heart after that as well.

As much as I hope that they, I highly doubt Pakistan will win this, they aren't good enough.

India to start as favourites, they gave us an epic phainta last time they toured UAE.

Paks days in UAE are done, expect india to reach the final, west indies look very strong with their power hitters , spinners will come into play

Thank you Pakistani bretheren for keeping such high hopes from Indian team but we know deep down what the end result will be. A Heart Breaking loss in the Semis after playing well in the league matches.

No we dont have the team or style of play for these conditions. Our batters cannot muscle the ball an ability that is most desired on slow wickets. We dont have good spinners.

Not sure if ICC have bothered checking the COVID situation in Oman

Just 5% of population has been vaccinated - I don't see this tournament happening in Oman.

As per Insidesport sources, groupings of ICC T20 World Cup will be announced on Friday. Will India draw with arch-rivals Pakistan- or it will be some other country like Australia?

In the previous edition, India and Pakistan were in the same group (B) along with New Zealand, Australia, and Bangladesh. Fans would be hoping for a repeat owing to the massive following of India vs Pakistan in the two countries and worldwide. The two countries usually play in ICC events and the ongoing political tussle between the two countries has become a roadblock for bilateral series in India, Pakistan.

The announcement will be made by BCCI President Sourav Ganguly, secretary Jay Shah in presence of ICC officials at 3.30 PM according to the information available with InsideSport.co

As per ICC release, a total of 16 teams will take part in the tournament.

Firs Round Qualifiers (Outside top 8 teams)

Sri Lanka, Ireland, Papua New Guinea, Oman (Group A), Bangladesh, Scotland, Namibia and The Netherlands (Group B). (Top 4 will progress)

After the qualifiers, the Super 12 round will take place.

Super Eight Qualifiers

India, West Indies, England, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Pakistan, Afghanistan.

NOTE: The ICC T20 World Cup qualifiers and the full schedule might be released in next 48 hours.

^ excited to know about the groups ..Hope India Pakistan are not in the same group and meet in the knock out some if they prefer progress. Constantly grouping the arch rivals in same group is not a fair step.

Why india will refuse to get 2 free points by not playing against Pakistan?

I suspect 100 percent india and pakistan will be in the same group, ICC events after 2011 have had india and pakistan always play in same group, its the match that generates most Money, that is all ICC cares about it.

Oman leg is highly doubtful atleast for the spectators point of view.

India to play Pakistan after 2 years. Good news.

Kudos to BCCI for taking the tough decision to move to Gulf and getting things organised quickly. Maybe they should run the country as they appear to be really good at organising and running things!

The idiots in ICC have messed it up.How can England,Australia,West Indies and South Africa be in the same group?

Sorry it's not clear - have the groups been decided via some kind of draw?

Or has ICC basically plucked them out of thin air based on what generates the most revenue?

Yes, i remember what an amazing job they did with the IPL

I guess you are trying to be sarcastic but it is a bit too subtle. And whether you like it or not, IPL was pretty damn well organised against the backdrop of a pandemic.

Oman is set to host ‘minimum six matches’ in the T20 World Cup. With four teams - Oman, Bangladesh, Muscat and Papua New Guinea - set to be based in Muscat for the qualifying round matches, there are discussions on whether Oman Cricket could be awarded a few more fixtures.

“The schedule is yet to be finalised, but it will host a minimum of six matches - with three involving Oman and three from other teams in the same group,” ICC acting CEO Geoff Allardice said.

“The BCCI is still the host of the event, so the discussions around the schedule would be between the ICC and the BCCI when the time is right. We have not got into that level of details yet. There would be a minimum of six matches in Oman. It could be six or it could be more,” Allardice said, adding that the schedule is yet to be finalised.

On Friday, a BCCI delegation - comprising president Sourav Ganguly, secretary Jay Shah, vice-president Rajiv Shukla and treasurer Arun Dhumal - along with an ICC team, reached Oman to recce the grounds and other infrastructure. Sportstar understands the BCCI delegation will be in the Oman capital city till Saturday and is expected to finalise the tournament hosting contract and other details.

“I am particularly delighted to be in Oman. As a major force in world cricket, the BCCI has always endeavoured to promote and assist Associate Nations. In my capacity as Asian Cricket Council President, my vision is to take cricket far and deep into Asia. Co-hosting the World Cup will put Oman Cricket on the global stage. They are also playing the Qualifiers and it will be an icing on the cake if they make it to the Super 12s,” BCCI secretary Shah said.

Oman was chosen as one of the venues as it would not be possible to host the entire tournament across just three centres - Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah.

“The BCCI delegation is quite impressed with the facilities in Muscat and we will consider all the factors on whether more matches could be awarded to the venue before finalising the schedule. Since it is an ICC event, they will have to take a final decision on how many matches the country will host. For now, six games are definitely confirmed,” a source in the BCCI told this publication.

A lot, however, would depend on the travel restrictions and the protocols. The ICC chief executive stated that they are in touch with the Emirates and the Oman governments about the protocols before finalising the schedule. The ICC also plans to allow spectators for the games, however, a decision will be taken after consulting the governments.

The tournament will be played between October 17 and November 14.

New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in its Apex Council meeting on Monday informed the members that the board has transferred its ticketing rights to the Emirates Cricket Board and Oman Cricket (OC) for the ICC T20 World Cup.

All revenues generated out of sale of match tickets will be retained by ECB and OC.

"BCCI is paying ECB a fixed fee of USD 1.5 million (from hosting fee of USD 13.5 million) and operational costs of USD 5.5 million which will be covered by ICC.

Total fee payable is USD 7 million. BCCI has transferred its ticketing rights to the ECB and all revenues generated out of the sale of match tickets will be retained by the ECB.

A Local Organising Committee (LOC) for delivery of this event has been constituted which mainly include staff from BCCI and a few staff from ECB.

"The BCCI is hosting 6 matches in Muscat. BCCI is paying OC a fixed fee of USD 400,000. BCCI has transferred its ticketing rights to the OC and all revenues generated out of sale of match tickets will be retained by the OC. The BCCI has deployed a team from its LOC in Muscat to oversee the preparation for the event," a BCCI official said.

While BCCI has the hosting right for the showpiece event, it has been moved to UAE and Oman with an eye on COVID-19. India and Pakistan will be locking horns on October 24 in a group-stage encounter. The tournament will get underway from October 17, with the final to be played in Dubai on November 14.

The tournament will begin with the Round 1 Group B encounter between hosts Oman and Papua New Guinea on October 17, with Scotland and Bangladesh, the other teams in Group B, clashing in the evening match.

Ireland, Netherlands, Sri Lanka, and Namibia -- making up Group A -- will be in action in Abu Dhabi the next day, with Round 1 matches running till October 22. The top two teams in each group will proceed to the Super 12 stage of the tournament, beginning on October 23.

The second round of the tournament -- the Super12 stage -- will get underway in Abu Dhabi on October 23, with the Group 1 contest between Australia and South Africa. This will be followed up with an evening clash between England and West Indies in Dubai. Old rivals England and Australia will lock horns in Dubai on October 30. It will conclude on November 6 with matches between Australia and West Indies in Abu Dhabi, and England and South Africa in Sharjah.

Group 2 will commence with a heavyweight clash between India and Pakistan in Dubai on October 24. Pakistan then take on New Zealand in Sharjah on October 26, in a tough start for the 2009 champions. Afghanistan begin their campaign on October 25 at Sharjah, taking on the winners of Group B from the first round. It will conclude on November 8, with India taking on the second-placed Round 1 qualifier from Group A.

The first semi-final will be held in Abu Dhabi on November 10. The second semi-final will be hosted by Dubai on November 11. Both semi-finals have reserve days. The marquee clash of the tournament will take place in Dubai on November 14, Sunday, with Monday acting as the reserve day for the final.

Oman Cricket Stadium Floodlight issue

I am surprised that this is an ICC approved ground for a world cup.

The flood lights are designed as such that it has made catching under lights very difficult according to the commentators. 3-4 catches dropped today due to the floodlights directly on the eyes.

Did ICC messed up by choosing Oman as a ground just like they did in the 2007 world cup final?

This is really unfair for many of these teams

yes, very difficult for fielders to keep their eye on the skiers.. those floodlights should have been more diffused and spread around, looks almost like a point light and you could actually see the lightrays in the arc.
Lovely ground but more suited for a day match
