South Africa and Australia have retained the top two positions on the MRF Tyres ICC ODI Team Rankings following the 1 May annual update, but eighth-ranked Pakistan has opened up a nine-point advantage over ninth-ranked the West Indies, which can prove decisive since England plus the next seven highest-ranked sides as on 30 September 2017 will qualify automatically for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019.

The annual update is carried out to ensure the table continues to reflect teams’ recent form with older results being discarded. As such, the table now reflects all matches from 1 May 2014, with matches played from 1 May 2016 carrying 100 per cent weighting.

Both Pakistan and ninth-ranked West Indies have dropped points following the update - Pakistan slipping from 90 points to 88 points and the West Indies sliding from 83 points to 79 points. However, Pakistan’s pre-update seven-point gap has extended to nine points.

Seventh-ranked Bangladesh and sixth-ranked Sri Lanka have also conceded points.

Bangladesh has surrendered one point and is now on 91 points, but its gap over eighth-ranked Pakistan has increased from two points to three. Sri Lanka, which was sitting pretty on 98 points prior to the annual update, has slid to 93 points to now lead Bangladesh by only two points. However, Sri Lanka leads the West Indies by 14 points.

Meanwhile, number-one ranked South Africa has gained four points following the annual update and is now on 123 points, while world champion and second-ranked Australia has stayed on 118 points.

India, which will defend the ICC Champions Trophy title in the UK in June, has swapped places with ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 finalist New Zealand. Both the sides have gained points following the update but India’s five-point gain against New Zealand’s increase of three means India is now ranked third on 117 points and New Zealand is fourth on 115 points.

England, which will host the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 and the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019, has retained its fifth ranking but has moved up one point to 109.

There is no change to 10th-ranked Afghanistan’s tally of 52 points, but 11th-ranked Zimbabwe has dropped two points and is now on 46 points. Ireland has gained one point and is on 43 points.

The small difference in points in the middle of the table adds a lot of context, entertainment and excitement to the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy and other matches up to 30 September since performances during this period could help sides to qualify directly for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 rather than having to progress through the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2018.

MRF Tyres ICC ODI Team Rankings (as on 1 May, following the annual update)

Rank Team Points
1. South Africa 123 (+4)
2. Australia 118 (-)

Good news for Pakistan in terms of the 2019 World Cup

Westindies will miss out most probably

So these were annual update in which certain fans were claiming there country will get big from pak and westindies lol -1

Can see easily see Pakistan going to 6 if we make it to the semis of the CT. We should win the ODI series against Sri Lanka in UAE later this year too.

Bangladesh will lose points because I frankly don't see them winning any games at the CT and if they lose even a single game to Ireland in the tri-series they're going to fall. But I think they can be very optimistic of their home ODI series against Australia in the summer. Aussies may very likely end up losing that series.

West Indies are pretty much out of World Cup qualification now. Their best chance was against Pakistan and they missed it twice, at UAE and at home.

Bangladesh has realists chance to go to 6. Will the be close to 5 if they win the tri series?

BD is the most improved side over the last few years followed by Afghanistan. They have a better batting line up in odis than Pakistan and SL. My only reservation is their bowling esp outside subcontinent

WI most likely to miss the direct qualification now.

They(WI) won't loose any point in CT for sure. It is PAK and bd who have very good chance to loose lots of points in CT, specially PAK as they will be playing those countries with less rating point where as bd is playing those countries having high rating points.

Opposite actually - think this way; PAK plays 6th, 3rd & 1st team, we play 5th, 4th & 2nd team. PAK will hardly loss any point if they don't lose against SRL; we'll if we lose all 3 matches. Critical for us is not to lose/tie any match against IRL, which almost certainly will pull us to 8th even before CT.

I knew that, after annual rounding, we, PAK & SRL will lose points, with losing most. That last ODI against SRL actually cost us 6th spot.

Congrats Pak fans, from 9th to the 8th spot. My piece of cake is due.

We did fairly ok in SRL, but got destroyed in all formats in NZ. We also shouldve won 1 ODI against NZ in NZ.

I was not talking about tri series.i know about that. I was talking about Ct only and about the scenario of pak and bd loosing all matches in CT. Pak will be much looser than bd in that scenario

Don't worry my friend. I have a feeling that this bd team will do much better than their Asian counterparts if they can play regularly in the coming years. You should realise that that nz series was their first away bilateral tour in more than SIX years may. Bd's inexperience and getting very little chance to play abroad was the main cause of that result in that series. Infact i call the series 'successfull' as bd had all those drawbacks .

Part of our disastrous 2014 is still being counted...0-5 vs India and WI but 5-0 vs ZIM.

We need to win every game in the Ireland tri series. I hope no results aren't counted in the rankings.

I think it is over. The new ODI ranking had made sure WI must go through qualifying rounds.

What two decades worth of failure does to you I guess. :91:
