Namibia will be looking to continue their rise in world cricket when they lock horns with Sri Lanka in the opening match of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2022 in Geelong on Sunday 16 October.

The first of 45 matches at the tournament will see Round 1 get underway in style, with Group A favourites Sri Lankan taking on a Namibia side who have high hopes of progressing to the Super 12 stage.

Overview

This won't be the first time that the two sides are going to face off against each other at a major tournament. Namibia and Sri Lanka were placed in the same group in the last T20 World Cup where they also played their opening match of the campaign against each other. The contest didn't give Gerhard Erasmus and his men happy memories as Sri Lanka completely outclassed them - Namibia were bowled out for 96 and the Lankans chased the target down with seven wickets and more than six overs to spare.

But Namibia put on a spirited show in their remaining matches as they won against Ireland and Netherlands to qualify for the Super 12 and also went on to beat Scotland in that phase. The team has grown in confidence and experience since then and it was visible when they put on a clinical show to beat Ireland in the warm-up match ahead of the mega event earlier this week. Namibia will be hoping for an even better outing this time and they would like to start their journey with a win against the Lankans.

Sri Lanka, on the other hand, are coming into this tournament with a big reputation to protect as they emerged as the Champions of Asia recently by beating teams like India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh on their way to the Asia Cup title.

That win, which featured five consecutive victories, halted a worrying run of form since the last T20 World Cup campaign. Sri Lanka had lost nine out of their first 10 T20Is this year before turning things around completely with that Asia Cup triumph.

The Lankans have also carried their newly-found form to Australia, as they delivered an excellent performance in the warm-up match against Zimbabwe. Dasun Shanaka’s side won the match by 33 runs as the likes of Kusal Mendis and Wanindu Hasaranga fired with the bat. They will now look to carry this momentum forward to their match against Namibia.

Key Players

Wanindu Hasaranga: The spin-bowling all-rounder has emerged as Sri Lanka's most important player in the last few years. Hasaranga has played 44 T20 internationals so far and has claimed 71 wickets at a mean average and economy rate of 14.74 and 6.72 respectively.

He has also proven himself quite handy with the bat, scoring 448 runs, including a best of 71. The 25-year-old was once again seen at his best in the warm-up match against Zimbabwe as he smashed an unbeaten 37 from just 14 deliveries and also bowled an economical spell of 4-0-24-0.

David Wiese: The all-rounder made a huge impact with both bat and ball in Namibia's last T20 World Cup campaign.

Wiese finished as their highest run-getter in the mega event last year, with 227 runs at an average of 45.40. He picked up six wickets as well and maintained a good overall economy rate of 7.42 to go with that. And Wiese has an equally important role to play for Namibia in this edition.

David Wiese: Last year was a fantastic experience for us. To be able to qualify for the Super 12 stage was just amazing. We are back here again, we got to do it all over again. We've had 12 months to reflect on what we did last year. This time people aren't going to take us lightly like they did, so that adds a little bit of pressure on us. We've worked hard. Hopefully we can be successful again. We can compete in the international stage. Once you start playing against the bigger teams, that changes your mindset to being a world-class side. We had an opportunity to play against Zimbabwe and we were fortunate enough to get a positive result out of that. We are excited to be here. I have been playing different tournaments, you get exposure to different conditions and you get to play with different players and coaches.

Drinks break.

NAM 136/6 (18.1) CRR: 7.49

Another 20 runs or so and this could be interesting.

Robbie frylinck and jj smit have been very impressive.
They surely can hit big sixes.

Namibia have improved a lot . From 90/6 they managed a good score

This will be the template of this T20 world cup, Namibia has scored almost 70 runs in the last 5 overs. And all of a sudden the match has come alive. Chasing 160+ in icc t20 tournament, anything can happen.
Namibia has improved a lot recently. Wiese of Lahore Qalandars was unlucky today to be out on golden duck.

Namibia looks to be a competitive side probably better than Bangladesh and Zimbabwe. They way they were hitting Lankans bowlers in the last 5 overs were outstanding. Pakistan was clearly struggling against these Lankan bowlers and Namibian were hitting sixes for fun

All these small teams have got decent batting talent but they lack good bowlers especially fast bowlers.

OMG what in the world are Lankan batsmen doing? I can't believe this is the Asia cup winner just a month ago ...

The prediction is showing Lankan 1% and Namibia 99% to win the match... LOL

In big trouble Sri Lanka.

3 down, pressure on.

Good recovery by Lanka, They seems to be slow starter in any tournament play their worst in the 1st match

Will some clarify, If Lanka finish 2nd in their group they will head in Pakistan, india group ?

Yes, runners up of Srilanka's group will join Pakistan, India, South Africa and winner of this group will join Australia, England and New Zealand.

So if Sri Lanka finishes second they will qualify for Pakistan's group in the Super 12.

In the last couple of years in T20's in Australia, there seems to be a bat first bias. MCG is the only exception where it's 50:50

7 down... just saw Wiese in NAM XI, he was playing in IPL few seasons back, does he have dual citizenship, always thought he was a South African? :O

Ridiculous. Namibia made it one side affair . Guess lanka still busy celebrating Asia cup

That was a fluke. SL is not a great team in any format.

What in the world are you talking about? So by your logic, India, who was the favorite to win the Asia cup, was their loss a fluke? LOL bro relax. Not everything is a fluke. SL played their heart out to win the Asia cup. This is just one match that is going terribly wrong for them. Similar to what happened to PAK/IND in 2007 WC.

If you go by your logic, PAK/SL/IND/WI winning the wc at one stage or not was a fluke ...

Lol lanka wanted to finish second so they could face Pakistan and india

Both Windies and SL looks to be heading in our group that's a bad news

His father was born in Namibia, that's why due to his ancestry he was eligible to play International cricket for Namibia.

I am still surprised that Bangladesh isn't playing in the qualifier. How in the world did they manage to qualify automatically?

I am saying based on ability, will not call Pak/ Ind as fluke because they have ability, SL are very in consistent and not great in terms of skill, even AFG might win a 5 match T20 series against them.

I will not rate them much for their title in Dubai.

Their true worth is this, where they have to play qualifiers and losing even to NAMIBIA by a huge margin. Even Bdesh/ Afg would not lose this badly to Namibia

Does SL actually think that losing badly to lower teams in the opener is the way to win the competition eventually?

Fair point, I agree with this. Based on ability, they are minnow level. However, AFG is far better than both BD and SL in T20 skills. Their batsmen plays fearless cricket. When they click, its fun to watch. And they do have world class bowlers especially for T20 formats.

Bangladesh were among the Top 8 teams in rankings upon the direct qualifications cutoff date for this World Cup.

Sri Lanka were 9 and and West Indies 10.

SL in danger, run rate will be important if you're winning only two matches in four team group

SL is definitely out of this game. Best thing they could do is bat out the 20 overs and gather as much run as possible to help their RR

Netherlands have much greater chance to beat SL. Pathetic performance from SL not deserved to continue in WC

And then you have players like Rajapaska with the goal to being the Player of the tournament ... LOL. Cricinfo was pushing out that article and now hide it haha

Srilanka looks to be a very average side. At Asia Cup they play out of their skin to win but in these pitches they don't have much chances to advance to Semis. Barring 1-2 names i don't even know the names of their players. Hasaranga is their star player ans other lefti guy who played well against Pakistan. Rest of the side looks minnow level.

UAE's jersey looks nice this time around. Usually, they have an ugly grey jersey. This one is colorful and lively

How correct i was

There's a high chance now that Group B can consist of -
SA
PAK
IND
SRL
BAN
WI.

It could get very difficult for strong teams here to qualify.
